Warning: This article contains a massive spoiler for "Abigail."
Taste is obviously subjective, but for my money, "Abigail" is one of the best horror movies of 2024. It's been a few years since we've had a truly great vampire movie, and this part-crime thriller, part-comedy, part-gothic horror, part-gorefest has set the bar for vampire films in the 2020s. A group of criminals — Melissa Barrera as Joey, Dan Stevens as Frank, Kathryn Newton as Sammy, William Catlett as Rickles, Kevin Durand as Peter, and Angus Cloud as Dean — are tasked with kidnapping Abigail (Alisha Weir) and holding her for ransom, believing her rich father will happily trade funds for the safekeeping of his baby girl. Unfortunately for the group, Abigail is a vampire, and this kidnapping plot is a trap to allow her some fun before devouring them all in a gigantic feast.
Throughout "Abigail," the kidnappers and the titular vamp herself often reference her wealthy,...

This weeks 20 Questions on Deadline guest is Dan Stevens. Of course we all remember his first major foray onto our screens as Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey, and the untimely death of his character that had fans raging for his return.
But Hollywood called, and since then, Stevens has accrued a long list of credits, including Beauty and the Beast, I’m Your Man, Love, Death and Robots, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities and Welcome to Chippendales. Recently he voiced a character in the Oscar-winning The Boy and the Heron, and next up, his new film Godzilla x Kong: the New Empire will be in theaters March 29th.
In this episode, Stevens digs into his reasons for needing a Taylor Swift collab, why Elvis is top of his list of dream roles, and how shooting Godzilla x Kong in Australia came with plenty of real-live snakes and killer trees.

When you look at the sprawling ensemble that is "Downton Abbey," it can be easy to lose track of all of these characters, especially when you're having to alternate between the aristocratic Crawley family and their downstairs staff. But series creator/writer Julian Fellowes ("The Gilded Age") has done a great job of giving both clusters equal attention, as the show hops from one character's plotline to the next. Of course, the breadth of a television show with six seasons allows ample time to make sure no one gets lost in the shuffle.
As the PBS series made the transition to the big screen in 2019 with "Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture," and again this year with "Downton Abbey: A New Era," I wondered if Fellowes would be able to give as much attention to Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess, while also allowing characters like Rob James-Collier's Thomas Barrow enough...

The captivating melodrama of "Downton Abbey" would be but window dressing without its spectacular ensemble to bring these characters to life. Even when some favorites ended up leaving the show, series creator/writer Julian Fellowes ("The Gilded Age") always had someone interesting to add to the roster. For every Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) or Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay), there was an Andy (Michael Fox) or Lady Rose (Lily James) to round out the cast. Even if you look the upstairs and downstairs crew within their own groups, in each you'll find a wealth of...

With "Downton Abbey: A New Era" set to open in theaters nationwide soon, fans of the British television series-turned-films are excited to see the tremendous ensemble back on the screen. When you have a cast this talented, people are likely to form attachments with some of their favorite characters, and in the world of "Downton Abbey," there's plenty to choose from. There's certainly a huge following for characters like Dan Stevens' Matthew Crawley or Jim Carter's Mr. Carson. I'm partial to the kindhearted Mr. Molesley, played by the ever-charming Kevin Doyle, but for my money, which Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) would happily take...

Exclusive: Marking the first major role to be cast in the upcoming sequel, Dan Stevens is set to lead the next installment of Legendary’s Monsterverse film franchise, a follow-up to last year’s Godzilla vs. Kong. Adam Wingard, who helmed the first film, is returning to direct, with production is slated to begin this summer in Australia.
Per usual, plot details are being kept under wraps, other than following the film’s larger-than-life monsters and then preparing for their next battle against each other. Godzilla vs. Kong helped get audiences back in theaters as it became the second film of the Covid era to cross the 100 million mark at the domestic box office en route to 468 million globally. The number is impressive as it also bowed day-and-date on HBO Max.

Dan Stevens decided not to sit down with John Dean, Republican lawyer in the Watergate era turned news pundit and circuit speaker, ahead of playing him in the Starz drama Gaslit.
Stevens has told the British press that he was initially keen to sit down with Dean, who still polarises opinion for his role in the Nixon-period scandal, but the actor changed his mind once word got out of the planned meeting.
“I was keen to sit down with him,” Stevens told the Guardian. “Then I was told I’d have to speak with Universal’s lawyers in advance, which I didn’t want to do; I didn’t think it would make the meal taste particularly nice.”

Saying goodbye to your favorite TV character is always bittersweet. On one hand, it can be heartbreaking to see a beloved character leave. On the other, a TV star's departure can be one of the best moments in a series, with the writers building tension as a character prepares to bid a final farewell. Exits often mean that change and fresh stories are coming to a show. Case in point (major Downton Abbey spoilers ahead but also why haven't you watched yet?): Dan Stevens' character, Matthew Crawley, died in a fiery car crash just hours after Mary (Michelle Dockery) gave birth to a son on Downton Abbey. Though it was a truly devastating end to their love story,...

Back in 1964, CBS premiered the sci-fi rom com “My Living Doll” in which a bachelor psychiatrist (Bob Cummings) is asked to take care of a beautiful prototype android (Julie Newmar) because her creator doesn’t want the robot to fall in the hands of the Army. The shrink decides to teach his stunning but naïve charge how to be the perfect woman: a pre-women’s lib female does what she is told and never talks back to him. That premise wouldn’t fly these days especially in the wake of the #MeToo era. Even then the series only lasted one season. The tables are turned in the sophisticated, thought-provoking rom-com “I’m Your Man,” Germany’s official entry for Best International Feature at the Oscars.

A diabolically clever script by actor-turned-director Dave Franco and mumblecore pioneer Joe Swanberg, The Rental has a simple premise: Take two couples with volatile sexual dynamics, have them rent an AirBNB for a weekend on the rugged Oregon coast, mix in secret cameras and the presence of a peeping psycho, and spike the steadily-building suspense with psychological insights. Yes, this is well-covered territory — see the recent You Should Have Left, which didn’t work at all. Yet Franco’s behind-the-cameras debut is sure to strike a chord for Covid-trapped audiences.

Downton Abbey fans were shocked when Dan Stevens announced he was leaving the hit period drama after just two seasons, with his character Matthew Crawley being killed off – via a shock car crash – in a Christmas special. Some wondered at the time if Stevens was making the right move in leaving the show that made his career, but the actor has proved that he definitely did as he’s since found success in Hollywood.

What’s Downton Abbey without the effortlessly charming Matthew Crawley?
Brought to life by Legion actor Dan Stevens, we had reason to believe last year that Mr. Crawley was headed back to the manor to prepare for the upcoming movie adaptation, which was said to have most, if not all, of the mainline cast returning.
We know that Dame Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery and Hugh Bonneville, among many others, are already on the docket, with series creator Julian Fellowes on script duties. The latter will also co-produce this one-off period drama alongside Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge, but it seems that Stevens won’t be joining them after all.
An Instagram post (see below) from last year had fans thinking the actor would be involved in the project, but catching up with him this week, Deadline has now confirmed that unfortunately, the Downton Abbey movie will be without Mr. Crawley.

Just weeks after news broke that a Downton Abbey movie is officially in the works, a few cast members of the hit show had a fun reunion on Sunday, Aug. 12 and fans can't get enough of the new photos. First, actress Michelle Dockery — who famously played Lady Mary Crawley on all six Downton seasons — took to Instagram to post a black and white snapshot of herself posing with actors Dan Stevens and Allen Leech. "Dorks," the 36-year-old star captioned the image. Reunion time!
One month after it was announced that the Downton Abbey movie is officially happening, stars Dan Stevens, Michelle Dockery and Allen Leech shared photographs from a recent hangout session in Los Angeles.
“Dorks,” Dockery, 36, wrote alongside a black-and-white image of the trio smiling together on Sunday.
Stevens, who played Matthew Crawley in the acclaimed television series before his character’s (spoiler alert!) untimely demise, seemed to jokingly tease his own involvement in the film, which is set to start production this summer.
“Should Matthew have a mustache for the #DowntonAbbeyMovie…?” the 35-year-old actor wrote alongside the same image.

British actress Michelle Dockery, who receives the Variety Icon Award at TV drama festival Canneseries in Cannes, Southern France on Saturday, spoke at a masterclass earlier in the day about her career and roles in TV series like “Downton Abbey,” “Good Behavior” and “Godless.”
Dockery said that even when she was a child she was a performer – impersonating politicians and other famous people for her parents’ amusement. Her training at Guildhall drama school gave her a classical training best suited to a career on the stage. It also ingrained in her the idea that she should see herself as part of an ensemble, she said.
When she was “stressing out” about whether she was “intelligent” or “educated” enough to be an actor she was reassured by her acting teacher that acting is “more about instincts and intuition than anything – it doesn’t matter how many books you have read or...

Dan Stevens has starred as a cross-dressing stay-at-home dad in an episode of High Maintenance.
The latest instalment of the web series, which was created by Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair, sees the former Downton Abbey actor play struggling writer Colin.
Living in New York with his wife and young son, Colin is finding it difficult to produce work of any substance.
Feeling emasculated by his wife's successful career, Colin spends most of his time smoking weed and walking around their flat in women's clothing.
Earlier this year, Stevens revealed that he plans to watch the Us transmission of Downton Abbey's fourth series.
Stevens quit the ITV drama in 2012, with his character Matthew Crawley killed off in that year's Christmas special.

Killing off a main character in a television show is a risky move: You're upending the show's world (and putting a coworker out of a job) in the hope that the shake-up will lead to something greater down the line. And guess what? Despite the ministrations of fans, who claim that they will never watch their favorite show without [insert character name here], it often works!

Tonight, as the plush velvet curtain draws to a close on the latest season of Downton Abbey, it’s worth taking a look ahead to what comes next for the Crawley clan. I’m not talking about whether Lady Mary will finally give the green light to one of her tweedy, stammering suitors. Or if Edith will be able to keep her secret, scarlet-letter shame under wraps in Switzerland amongst all the chocolate shops and cuckoo clocks. Or if the increasingly dim and blowhard-y Earl of Grantham will gamble away his wife’s fortune at the card table. I mean...

Just as Lady Mary seemed to be moving past her grief for Matthew Crawley on "Downton Abbey," the repercussions of the horrific crime Anna Bates was a victim of in last week's episode seeped throughout the estate.
In Season 4's Episode 2, as the residents of "Downton" enjoyed some opera, Anna (Joanne Froggat) was violently raped by Green, the valet of the visiting Lord Gillingham, and from Sunday's opening scene (Episode 3) the series spotlighted the harsh realities of a rape survivor in the 1920s.
