Released in 2018 the Australian alien invasion film Occupation caught a lot of people off guard with the amount of action and the quality of the effects it produced on a low budget. Now the sequel Occupation: Rainfall is here, the success of the original allowing it the luxury of a $25,000,000 dollar budget. That’s about one-tenth of the Hollywood blockbusters it’s competing with. Can it hold its own against the competition, or is resistance to the Disney Empire futile?

Questlove’s Summer of Soul is up to 753 theaters as the doc about the 1969 ‘Black Woodstock’ concert in Harlem that debuted in two locations last weekend crossed into arthouse, commercial and urban venues.
Not that it was easy, said Frank Rodriguez, SVP General Sales Manager, Searchlight Pictures. “Exhibitors are eager to get back on track,” he said. “We had to push very hard in a crowded marketplace” that includes The Boss Baby: Family Business, The Forever Purge and week two of the first true post-Covid blockbuster, F9.
Rodriguez cited notable performances in Brooklyn, San Francisco and Georgetown in D.C. after what was basically an extended promo in NY and LA. Deadline is hearing from industry estimates that Thursday night came in north of $78K.

A hapless romantic learns about the dangers of procrastination while attempting to save his crumbling marriage in “Long Story Short,” Australian actor Josh Lawson’s harmless, heart-filled follow-up to his 2014 directorial debut, “The Little Death.” Though the high-concept relationship movie frequently trips over its own well-meaning sentiments, the sweet, earnest performances and sharp technical craftsmanship deliver a blissful feeling when the material comes up short.
Teddy (Rafe Spall) is perpetually late to everything important. His poor time-management skills have led him to arrive at a New Year’s Eve party in the final seconds of the countdown to midnight, only to swoop in and lay a big smooch on … Leanne (Zahra Newman), a total stranger he mistakes for his flighty girlfriend, Becka (Dena Kaplan). Making matters worse, he goes into anaphylactic shock right after their kiss because she’d been eating almonds. Haphazard though their introduction may have been, the couple hit it off,...

"I don't think you get how time travel works." Saban Films has released the official trailer for a romantic comedy titled Long Story Short, made by actor / filmmaker Josh Lawson. This actually premiered at the Luxembourg City Film Festival last month, and lands on VOD this July. Teddy wakes up the morning after his wedding to discover that every few minutes he's jumping forward to the next year of his life. "Watching his future flash before his eyes, Teddy must make every second count if he is to win back the woman he loves in this feel good comedy about second chances." Rafe Spall stars as Teddy, with Zahra Newman as his love interest Leanne, joined by Ronny Chieng, Josh Lawson, Dena Kaplan, and Noni Hazlehurst. This reminds me of About Time, both use time as the narrative conceit to talk more about the power of love. Here's the official...

"Something big is coming..." Saban Films has debuted a new official US trailer for an Australian sci-fi action thriller titled Occupation: Rainfall, from filmmaker Luke Sparke. This is a completely different trailer than the UK trailer we posted last week. Two years after aliens land on Earth, survivors from Sydney, Aus., fight in a desperate war as the number of casualties continue to grow. It's described as "Avatar meets Star Wars meets Independence Day," and I'll be damned if it doesn't have that kind of feeling in these trailers. From the VFX team behind The Last Jedi and Blade Runner 2049, Sparke's Occupation: Rainfall is a new "sci-fi action epic with an all star cast." Temuera Morrison co-stars with Ken Jeong, Jet Tranter, Dan Ewing, Lawrence Makoare, Daniel Gillies, Dena Kaplan, and Jason Isaacs. Bring on the rain! I just hope this is as kick ass as it looks! It could go either way,...

"Bring the rain." Signature Entertainment in the UK has unveiled the official UK trailer for an Australian sci-fi action thriller titled Occupation: Rainfall, from filmmaker Luke Sparke. Two years after aliens land on Earth, survivors from Sydney, Australia, fight in a desperate war as the number of casualties continue to grow. It's described as "Avatar meets Star Wars meets Independence Day," which is a hell of a marketing pitch for a film that definitely won't live up to any of those (sorry not sorry). This does have some massive VFX sequences, which is quite impressive, but the mash-up of unoriginal sci-fi ideas seems to be its biggest drawback.

Trystan Go and Dan Ewing in Occupation: Rainfall.
Writer-director Luke Sparke always intended to shoot Occupation: Rainfall, the sequel to his 2018 sci-fi thriller Occupation, in three blocks.
However lengthy delays in the second and third blocks resulted in fresh additions to the cast in Jet Tranter, Mark Coles Smith, David Roberts and Dena Kaplan.
Tranter (Tidelands) took over from Stephanie Jacobson as a key leader on the human resistance who tries to end the war with aliens.
Coles Smith is a commando with Roberts as another resistance leader and Kaplan as a fighter pilot.
They joined the previously announced cast of Dan Ewing, Temuera Morrison, Ken Jeong, Daniel Gillies, Lawrence Makoare, Vince Colosimo, Trystan Go, Zac Garred, Kat Risteska, Ben Chisholm, Erin Conner, Izzy Stevens and John Reynolds.

Summertime is an unusual time of year for television. Major networks have shunned it for decades using it to rerun their top TV shows or to burn-off less successful TV shows. But as more and more cable networks began to prove that summer runs and launches of TV shows could carve out a nice chuck of the advertising revenue, the competition during summer months began to heat up. CBS had a big summer with the Stephen King series “Under The Dome” (well, that is until the infamous CBS/Time Warner fee dispute blew up). NBC dabbled with new summer shows with “Crossing Lines” and “Camp.” ABC already cracked into the summer season a few years back with “Rookie Blue” and debuted its latest Canadian series “Motive” this summer as well. Yet while the big 5 networks were still hesitant to jump in full-throttle with new original scripted programming, the cable networks...

NBC’s summer series Camp has turned on the sizzle with the romance between Robbie (Tim Pocock) and Sarah (Dena Kaplan), childhood sweethearts considering their future together beyond their carefree summer days. In a recent exclusive interview, star Tim Pocock shared what he loves about this fun series and playing the ultimate good-guy who may get his heart-broken.
So what drew you to Camp and the role of Robbie Matthews?
Tim: I got the script back in January and I was originally going to audition for the role of Cole. I liked the script, as it was really funny and well-written. But when I told my agents, “I really like this Robbie guy,” they were like, “Well, let’s just wait and see what age range they are going to be looking at.” Luckily enough, the stars aligned and I got the role.
What do you most admire about Robbie?...

NBC’s new dramedy Camp — not to be confused with USA’s reality series Summer Camp, which premieres tonight, even though the conflicting promos certainly do their best — debuted Wednesday. I love Rachel Griffiths and therefore want to love this, but I’m not quite sold, not yet. The show seemed to want to project a “freakish outdoorsy cult mentality,” but I mostly saw people sitting around fabulously lit-from-all-sides bonfires and kids interrupting their parents during somewhat juicy sex talk. (Wait, they’re at a “family camp”? What is this, Dirty Dancing? Ooh, I wish.)

Chicago – Here are a few words that adequately describe NBC’s “Camp,” a Summer series premiering this Wednesday, July 10, 2013 — “Likable,” “Amiable,” “Cute,” “Fun.” It’s not designed to challenge your dramatic expectations and delivers exactly what you’d expect it to deliver but the cast has some notable stand-outs and the whole thing has the feel of a long weekend away in the Summer — fun while it lasts if not overly memorable.
Television Rating: 3.0/5.0
At its best, “Camp” is reminiscent of the best shows of ABC Family. It’s a program designed to engage both teens and adults. In fact, it’s closer to a soap opera than viewers may first expect with its counselors in training looking for some action and its camp manager who can’t figure out her own love life. Star Rachel Griffiths has become such a veteran at this kind of thing after hits like...

When Camp premieres in the Us on NBC next Wednesday at 10pm, few if any viewers will know the series set in a Us summer camp was shot in Australia with an Aussie cast.
Just how many Americans tune in, and how they respond, will be fascinating to see.
Executives from the Australian networks who saw the pilot episode at the La Screenings say the show has a flawed premise and has little or no hope of drawing an audience, at least in Australia.
Created by Liz Heldens (Friday Night Lights) and Peter Elkoff (Gossip Girl), it stars Rachel Griffiths as Mack Granger, the newly-divorced camp director/owner who is looking for a fresh start.
Rodger Corser plays Aussie Roger Shepard (all the other characters are American) who owns an upscale camp across the lake. He offers to buy her out and a love-hate relationship ensues. In the pilot there...

There's a fun new show coming to NBC this summer -- "Camp," starring Rachel Griffiths as Mackenzie Granger, the owner and director of Little Otter Family Camp, "where Mother Nature and human nature collide."
The show description from the network has us seriously excited about this summer romp:
Still reeling from her recent divorce, Mackenzie is ready for a fresh start. She is running things on her own for the first time and scrambling to keep the cash-strapped Little Otter from going under. She considers a buyout offer from Roger Shepard (Rodger Corser, "Underbelly"), the arrogant but sexy owner of the upscale camp across the lake. Despite her better judgment, their love-hate relationship quickly escalates. Meanwhile, she begins to realize that her charming but much younger handyman, Cole (Nikolai Nikolaeff, "Sea Patrol"), might be interested in more than just a professional relationship.
In the midst of all this, Mackenzie is...

"How I Met Your Mother" has always been a little nostalgic (to say the least), so it's no surprise that the CBS comedy is inviting a number of familiar faces as the show gets closer to its Season 9 climax.
According to TVLine, "Glee's" Jayma Mays, who last appeared in the Season 1 episode "Okay Awesome," where she had a brief flirtation with Ted in the nightclub where she worked as the coat check girl will return. Could she be the mother? Mays will reportedly return in the March 18 episode.
Becki Newton is also returning to "How I Met Your Mother," Entertainment Weekly reports. The actress' character Quinn, who broke off her engagement to Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) earlier in the show's current eighth season, will return in the episode airing on April 15.
