A selection of UK film funders will take to the stage at the UK pavilion at Cannes tomorrow (Sunday May 19) to explore their national and international ambitions, how they are working to empower emerging talent in a new media landscape, and their approach to creativity and risk.
Taking part is Mia Bays, director, BFI National Lottery Filmmaking Fund; Isabel Davis, executive director, Screen Scotland; Ursula Devine, development executive, Northern Ireland Screen’ Shanida Scotland, co-director and global head of film at Doc Society; Lee Walters, chief executive, Ffilm Cymru Wales; and Denitsa Yordanova, Head of UK Global Screen Fund and International Funds.

The British Film Institute (BFI) has unveiled the line-up of speakers and events taking place at the Cannes UK Pavilion, including talent talks with Santosh filmmaker Sandhya Suri and Birds and Kinds Of Kindness director of photography Robbie Ryan, as well as panel discussions on the historic UK independent tax credit and a conversation with representatives from UK film funders from across the nations and regions.
Suri will be joined by UK producer Mike Goodridge from Good Chaos and Eva Yates, director of BBC Film, to share the journey behind Suri’s narrative director debut, which plays in Un Certain Regard.

Exclusive: Principal photography has wrapped in Northern Ireland on the coming-of-age comedy-drama The Wise Guy from local production outfit Out of Orbit, starring Darrell D’Silva (Wrath Of Man).
The Wise Guy is the debut feature from writer-director Sam O’Mahony and tells the story of Francis Burns, a lonely boy (and devout atheist) who desperate for guidance and protection, finds an unconventional mentor hiding in the nearby woods; an American Gangster.
The screenplay was developed through Northern Ireland Screen’s New Writer Focus scheme, with production funding coming from Northern Ireland Screen’s New Talent Focus Fund supported by Invest Ni and from post-production house Yellow Moon.
Previous feature films to come through Northern Ireland Screen’s New Talent Focus scheme include Out of Orbit’s The Dig, A Bump Along the Way by Shelly Love, Bad Day for the Cut by Chris Baugh, and The Devil’s Doorway by Aislinn Clarke.

Exclusive: Irish actress and model Nadia Forde has created Dublin-set comedy The Lido for Ireland’s national broadcaster RTÉ.
Based on Forde’s own family history, the series centers on an Italian-run Fish and Chip shop in 1980s Dublin, as well as family relationships and rivalries in the Italian-Irish community. Dealing with themes including immigration, equality, and family loyalty, it is described as heartwarming and charming.
Rioghnach Ni Ghrioghair (Neon) has been attached as the lead writer, while Eamann Westland is also part of the writers’ room. The Lido is a co-production between Stephen McCormack’s Reflektor Media and Matt Scott’s Play Human, and will be made in collaboration with Northern Ireland Screen.
McCormack and Scott produce. Justin Healy, an executive producer for comedy commissioning at RTÉ, is the executive producer. Ursula Devine represents Northern Ireland Screen on the project.

Breaking Through The Lens, an initiative launched three years ago to promote emerging female directors, has unveiled the shortlist of projects vying to participate in the 3rd edition of its pitching platform set to take place during the Cannes Film Festival.
The selected projects, which will be pitched to over 100 financiers and key industry people during Cannes, were announced during the European Film Market on Feb. 25.
Spanning 13 countries, this year’s shortlist of 20 titles includes Tamika Guishard’s African dance-driven feature “Rhythm in Blues;” Daresha Kyi’s U.S. documentary “Mama Bears” which follows conservative Christian mothers whose lives are transformed as they accept their Lgbtq children; Ahd Kamel’s Saudi Arabian feature “My Driver and I” set in 80s and 90s and centering on an unlikely friendship between a privileged Saudi girl and her Nubian driver; and Laura Moss’ feature debut “Birth/Rebirth,” a female-driven Frankenstein adaptation.
