Swat is returning for an eighth season in the fall, but the upcoming season finale was written as a series finale. Star Shemar Moore says that the episode can also be treated as a new beginning for the series.
Starring Moore, Jay Harrington, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Rochelle Aytes, and Anna Enger Ritch, the CBS series follows Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson (Moore) as he leads the Special Weapons And Tactics unit (S.W.A.T.) of the LAPD.

S.W.A.T. is getting another season after all. After previously announcing that the now-airing seventh season would be the show’s last, CBS has had a change of heart and picked up S.W.A.T. Season 8.
The renewal is the latest twist in the S.W.A.T. saga. The show was first canceled back in May 2023 after six seasons. CBS then reversed course and ordered season 7, which was billed as the last for the show. The series finale was set to air May 17. That episode will now serve as the season 7 finale, with an unconfirmed number of episodes to air in the 2024-25 broadcast season.

After months of promoting the final season of S.W.A.T., CBS reversed course Thursday afternoon with the following announcement:
S.W.A.T. has been renewed for Season 8!
The news comes midway through what was previously teased as the seventh and final season.
As you’ll recall, S.W.A.T. was canceled a year ago, before the network walked it back a few days later with a renewal.
The latest twist comes as the hit Shemar Moore drama has been (carefully) wrapping up the storylines of some of the drama’s most beloved characters.
Kenny Johnson’s Luca was written out earlier this month. The character retired after revealing he wasn’t too keen on the idea of desk duty after an injury rendered him unfit to go out in the field with his team.
S.W.A.T. Season 7 is currently delivering huge ratings

Miracles do happen.
We’ve just witnessed one with the renewal of S.W.A.T, which was previously canceled by CBS.
Yes, that’s right, CBS announced today that it has renewed the hit drama series S.W.A.T. for the 2024-2025 season. The series will return for its eighth year on the Network.
Who had this on their bingo cards?
We’ve been riding for so long on the cancellation of popular shows on other networks — even after they’re renewed — that this news hits us like a shower of warm rose petals.
It’s concerning that during S.W.A.T. Season 7, many beloved characters have already said their goodbyes, so either they’ll be looking to walk that back or introduce us to a new team.
That’s a risky move for a series that had already been on the chopping block (and lost its head) once. Well, twice if you consider the original...

S.W.A.T. is not ending after all. Beating the odds a second time, the action drama has been renewed for the 2024-25 season, with Shemar Moore set to continue as star and executive producer. I hear Season 8 will consist of 22 episodes.
The news comes a year after S.W.A.T. was canceled before the decision was dramatically reversed a couple of days later with a renewal for a seventh and final season. This time, the network is not boxing itself in and is leaving the door open to more by not branding 8 as the series’ final season.
The surprise renewal, which sources said came down pretty quickly over the last couple of days, also comes as S.W.A.T is wrapping production on its seventh season. Moore hinted at the drama not necessarily ending by posting set photos on his Ig story yesterday with the caption “Season 7 finale will be [fire emoji],” not referring to the episode as series finale.

Turns out reports of “S.W.A.T’s” cancellation have been greatly exaggerated. CBS has renewed the cop drama for Season 8 despite announcing its seventh season would be its last nearly a year ago.
The latest drama marks the second time “S.W.A.T” has technically escaped cancellation, with CBS initially axing the show before announcing it would return for one last run. The original decision to cancel “S.W.A.T” came down to licensing fees. After Sony and CBS were unable to come to terms in 2023, the show was canceled, but they eventually worked out the deal for a final season with a reduced episode count.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for S.W.A.T. Season 7 Episode 2 “Peace Talks.”] S.W.A.T. is temporarily down two of its members in its final season, with original cast members Kenny Johnson (Dominique Luca) and Alex Russell (Jim Street) no longer series regulars and now recurring. They were noticeably missing from the opening credits in the premiere, but with that episode focused on Hondo (Shemar Moore), Hicks (Patrick St. Esprit), and Powell (Anna Enger Ritch) in Mexico. The second episode, however, brings in two more members of the team, and gives us some answers. When Tan (David Lim) gets to work, he tells Deacon (Jay Harrington) that Luca blending his morning smoothie is his alarm clock, and with him away, he overslept. “Long Beach S.W.A.T. have given Street the nickname Hollywood, but he says he’s whipping them into shape,” he adds. “And Luca’s loving London, sounds like he’s enjoying the...

The good news: Powell (Anna Enger Ritch) is alive on S.W.A.T. The bad news? Well, there’s a lot of it, in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the February 23 episode. The premiere ended with the team realizing that in securing stolen weapons, a very dangerous bomb was still out there—and Powell discovered that the person who has it is Gabriel Bautista (Rick Mancia), the local cop with whom she was about to grab dinner. He attacked and strangled her, but we knew she wasn’t dead since Ritch was made a series regular for the show’s final season. Now, in our clip, Hondo (Shemar Moore) and Hicks (Patrick St. Esprit) are in her hotel room looking for her before their flight home. “None of her stuff’s here, but I just found her phone on the floor by the curtain,” Hondo reveals. Hicks...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the S.W.A.T. Season 7 premiere, “The Promise.”] S.W.A.T. may want us to think that one of its own just died at the end of its final season premiere, but we know better. That doesn’t mean we’re not worried, though! “The Promise” sees Hondo (Shemar Moore), Hicks (Patrick St. Esprit), and Powell (Anna Enger Ritch) head down to Mexico City to escort a fugitive who escaped Hondo’s custody 10 years earlier back to the States. But while doing so, that fugitive escapes, and by the time they track him down, he and his crew are selling some military-grade stolen weapons, including a thermobaric vacuum bomb that could kill thousands. The fugitive is killed in the ensuing gunfight, but the bomb is missing from the weapons they recover. As the episode ends, Powell’s getting ...

When it comes to CBS’ S.W.A.T. somehow staying liquid beyond this final season, “everybody holds out hope,” says showrunner Andrew Dettmann. But if this is in fact the cop show’s swan song, the EP is planning a “wonderful farewell” for Hondo & Co.

Some big changes will be in store when S.W.A.T. returns for its seventh and final season later this month.
With the show preparing to end the storylines of all the characters we’ve grown to love over the years, some won’t even make it to the series finale.
TV Line reports that original cast members Kenneth “Kenny” Johnson (who plays Dominique Luca) and Alex Russell (Jim Street) have been demoted to recurring players for S.W.A.T. Season 7.
While the decision is a shocker because they’ve both been with the show since its 2017 launch, there is a reason for them getting pre-series finale departures.
Series showrunner Andrew Dettmann told the outlet that he decided that due to the truncated 13-episode order. It allowed the creatives to give them episodes “focused on their characters and the evolution of their storylines.”

Dennis Quaid leads a cast that includes Heather Graham, Jesse Metcalfe, Brett Rice and Rocky Myers through a “story of faith and survival” far less extraordinary than the filmmakers would have you believe, at least when working from a script by Brian Egeston that feels as mechanical as an aircraft instruction manual. Meanwhile, McNamara, best known for directing 2011 faith-based sleeper hit “Soul Surfer,” leans so heavily on the virtue of starting from the truth that he fails to recognize the abundance of elements that make his movie ring false.
