Warning: contains spoilers for Endeavour Series 1 – 9, Episode 2.
Few would have foreseen the poignant turn DS Jakes’ story took in Endeavour. Jack Laskey’s Detective Sergeant character started out in Series 1 as a foil to Morse – the cynical, streetwise cad to Endeavour’s principled and bright-eyed scholar. He wasn’t an antagonist, more a buzzing fly in Morse’s periphery, and not a man to trust. By the time Jakes exited the drama in Series 3 though, everybody was rightly rooting for him, Morse included.
The turning point came in the Series 2 finale, when DS Peter Jakes was revealed to have once been Little Pete, the youngest of a group of “wayward” boys raised at Blenheim Vale residential home. In the 1940s and 1950s, Blenheim Vale was the site of a brutal paedophilia ring. So-called pillars of the community including a police officer, a local politician, a philanthropic business owner and the home’s doctor,...

3.2 Arcadia
With Morse back at work after the dramatic events of the series three opener, it’s business as usual for Oxford’s sharpest detective. When artist Simon Hallward is killed in a terrible fire at his flat, the police initially assume that his death is nothing more than an accident. However, Morse’s attention is drawn to a Teasmaid next to the dead man’s bed that appears to have been the seat of the fire. Further investigation reveals that Hallward was responsible for poisoning food supplied to local supermarket, Richardson’s. This turns out to have been the cause of a mysterious recent ‘tummy bug’ which caused the death of a local woman. Hallward’s links with a nearby commune run...

Oxford's finest, DC Morse, is back where he belongs in Endeavour's solid series 3 opening episode...
This review contains spoilers.
3.1 Ride
Endeavour’s second series ended its run back in April 2014, leaving us desperate to find out how the events of its final episode would be resolved. We last saw the young Endeavour Morse in prison, falsely accused of the murder of Chief Constable Standish. His mentor, Detective Inspector Fred Thursday, was at death’s door after his shooting by the real killer, corrupt Assistant Chief Constable Deare. Would Morse be freed, and would Thursday survive the attack? The first of those questions wasn’t too hard to answer for long-time fans of the future Inspector Morse, but the second was considerably more troubling.
Ride begins in summer 1967, a year after the events of series two. It’s a relief to find Thursday alive and back on duty,...

Last year, the London Film Festival was bookended by a pair of Tom Hanks movies. This year, the fest is going in a different direction with opening- and closing-night films set during World War II. The event will open with The Imitation Game on October 8 and now has set David Ayer’s Fury as the capper on October 19. The pic stars Brad Pitt, Shia Labeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peña, and Jon Bernthal. Pitt and Ayer are confirmed to attend the closing-night festivities in Leicester Square with screenings to be simulcast to cinemas across the UK. The film is set in April 1945 as the Allies make their final push in the European Theater. A battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy (Pitt) commands a five-man Sherman tank crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines where they face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany. Endeavour Neverland PBS Masterpiece
Endeavour season two wrapped up tonight with Neverland — arguably the darkest story of the saga thus far. If the title makes you think of allegations related to a recently deceased pop star then you’re on the right lines as Neverland was a tale about child abuse, corruption and polite society’s aversion to ruffling feathers.
It all began with the murder of Eric Patterson, a local hack who’d recently been involved in a brawl with a local councilor. Initially, the investigation focused on controversial plans to redevelop a shuttered boys’ correctional school. Things got murkier when connections emerged between prominent figures and various men that had once attended the school. All of them, DS Pete Jakes (Jack Laskey) included, eventually came forward with stories of institutional abuse.
While this was going on, a young boy was kidnapped — he was unfortunate enough to have witnessed the killing of Patterson.

★★☆☆☆Based on the 1909 short story by Heart of Darkness scribe Joseph Conrad, Peter Fudakowski's debut feature film Secret Sharer (2014) is a handsomely made romantic drama which is ultimately sunk by its own clichés. Jack Laskey plays Konrad (a nod to the Polish author here) a young seaman, driven by his own ambition to take on the task of captaining a derelict old merchant ship in the South China Sea for the mysterious shady character known simply as 'The Boss' (Song Bin Zhu). Finding everything less than ship shape with a drunken ill-disciplined crew, a hanging garden installed in the gangway and his own doubts plaguing him, Konrad attempts to impose some authority to no real effect.

The new series of Endeavour maintains the tricky balance between satisfying Morse fans and drawing in new viewers...
This review contains spoilers.
2.1 Trove
Behind each of the cases solved by the young Endeavour Morse in 1960s Oxford lies a bigger mystery, one that taxes the audience’s puzzle-solving skills even as the detective remains blissfully unaware of the need to crack it. It is, of course, the enigma of Morse himself. John Thaw’s iconic portrayal of Colin Dexter’s dour, embittered yet thoroughly decent detective needs no real introduction, but Morse’s past exists for us only in outline: a broken engagement, a difficult Oxford career, an abiding resentment of the top brass who obstructed him at every turn.
Endeavour’s first series established Shaun Evans as a fine Morse, well able to capture the character’s established idiosyncrasies while making the role his own.

Shaun Evans (The Last Weekend) resumes his role as the title character while Roger Allam (Ashes to Ashes) plays his mentor. John Thaw’s real-life daughter Abigail will make several guest appearances as Dorothea Frazil while Anton Lesser (Casualty 1909) and Jack Laskey (Sherlock Holmes) have also signed on to appear in the show. Lewis creator Russell Lewis wrote the scripts for Endeavour and the series will be broadcast during 2013 on both on ITV and PBS.

As you might imagine (or at least, hope), being that the show is airing on History, the strength of the series comes from its commitment to accuracy. It’s hard to find fault...
