I’ve reviewed a lot of European TV series when they start streaming on our side of the Atlantic in the last several years. Among the light-hearted ones, France’s “Captain Marleau” and “Sharif” have been my favorites. Italy has also come up with some amusing forays into the genre. “Vincenzo Malconico: Italian Lawyer” is the most farcical of them all, as the eponymous attorney (Massimiliano Gallo) is a flustered guy with a marginal practice, besieged by hassles from all directions – family, friends, neighbors and clients –and usually more than one at a time. It’s eight episodes of fast-paced mayhem, so one needs to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy it. Murders occur, but the emphasis is far more on character comedy than the whodunnit component.
Much about Vincenzo’s appearance screams loser,...

"I don't like reality anymore. Reality is lousy." Netflix has debuted the full official trailer for The Hand of God, the latest film made by acclaimed Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino. This premiered at the 2021 Venice Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize Silver Lion and the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor. Sorrentino is telling his own story of growing up in Naples, as his desire to be a filmmaker grows. He shot this in Naples last year and it looks absolutely magical, showing the true power of cinema. The story of a boy in the tumultuous Naples of the 1980s. Sorrentino's most personal film yet is a tale of fate and family, sports and cinema, love and loss. Starring Filippo Scotti, with Toni Servillo, Teresa Saponangelo, Marlon Joubert, Luisa Ranieri, Renato Carpentieri, and Massimiliano Gallo. While I didn't end up loving this film ...

Massimiliano Gallo, Margherita Buy and Marina Confalone lead the cast of this Paco Cinematografica and Amazon Prime Video production, co-produced by Poland. A chaotic, dysfunctional family with all its conflicts, misunderstandings and silences forms the basis of Alessandro Gassmann’s latest feature film Il silenzio grande, on which shooting wrapped this Friday. Following on from Razzabastarda and The Prize, the well-known actor is once again stepping behind the camera, this time with a screenplay based on the homonymous stage production by Maurizio De Giovanni, which has been adapted for the big screen by the very same De Giovanni, together with Andrea Ozza and Gassmann. The story is as follows: once a luxurious home and now a creaking old mansion straight out of the pages of a ghost story, Villa Primic has been put up for sale. It was a painful decision, made by Signora Primic (Rose) and supported by Massimiliano and.

"Who are you...?" "Pinocchio!" Yes, of course. We all know who he is... Roadside Attractions in the US has unveiled one final US trailer for their upcoming release of the Italian update on Pinocchio, from director Matteo Garrone. This originally premiered at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year after opening in Italy on Christmas last year. This new take on the story from Carlo Collodi's novel of the same name is staying true to that book, telling a more grounded story with fantastical elements. Roberto Benigni (who previously directed his own Pinocchio film in 2002) stars as Geppetto, Federico Ielapi plays Pinocchio, with a main cast including Marine Vacth, Marcello Fonte, Gigi Proietti, Davide Marotta, Massimiliano Gallo, Rocco Papaleo, and Massimo Ceccherini. This version has been dubbed into English - the same as the UK version we've teased before. This honestly looks so pretty bad, and I'm not sure...

Acclaimed Italian filmmaker Matteo Garrone has released the new trailer for his upcoming live-action adaptation of the classic children’s story, Pinocchio, which is set to open in theaters on December 25th.
The film stars Oscar-winning actor Roberto Benigni as Geppetto, the woodcarver whose puppet magically comes to life and dreams of being a real boy. Nine-year-old Federico Ielapi plays Pinocchio, with some CGI assistance giving him a wooden frame and, of course, allowing his nose to grow exponentially whenever he lies.

Though hardly a household name outside his native land, Italian dramatist Eduardo De Filippo is one of the country’s most important creative voices of the 20th century, best remembered offshore for two classic cinema adaptations, “Marriage Italian Style” and “Ghosts – Italian Style.” Renowned at home for capturing the essence of Neapolitan life through a unique mix of comedy and drama drawing from realism and surrealism with clear ties to the style of the commedia dell’arte, De Filippo’s plays, rich in dialect, are difficult to translate not just into other languages but other cultures. Mario Martone’s decision to maintain the theatricality of his 2017 stage adaptation for Nest (Napoli Est Teatro) of “The Mayor of Rione Sanità” certainly won’t coax newcomers into the playwright’s world, nor is it likely to entice many Italians apart from De Filippo cognoscenti.

Italian filmmaker Mario Martone is set for a Venice return later this month with some familiar material: a new feature film based on the classic play “The Mayor of Rione Sanità” by Eduardo De Filippo, the kind of story that combines Martone’s love of complex Neapolitan crime stories with the age-old battle between good and evil. Martone is a frequent player at Venice, and has previously screened films like “Noi credevamo,” “Leopardi,” and “Capri-Revolution” at the annual festival.
The competition entry is inspired by the De Filippo play of the same name, though the playwright’s work is best known to movie lovers for another adaptation it inspired: Vittorio De Sica’s 1964 Sophia Loren-starring “Marriage Italian Style,” which was based on the play “Filumena Marturano.” The material is a natural fit for Martone, who has often crafted films about the people of his native Naples forced to deal with issues regarding crime,...

The wooden boy returns again. From the director of Roman Summer, Gomorrah, Reality, Tale of Tales, and Dogman comes a new take on... Pinocchio. Wait - for real? Yep. Garrone is finishing up a new Pinocchio movie that is scheduled for release on December 25th, Christmas Day, this year in Italy - but has no other release dates set yet. This new take on the story originally published in Carlo Collodi's novel of the same name is staying true to that book, telling a more grounded story rather than going all out with fantastical elements. Roberto Benigni (who previously directed his own Pinocchio film in 2002) stars as Geppetto, Federico Ielapi as Pinocchio, with a cast including Marine Vacth, Marcello Fonte, Gigi Proietti, Davide Marotta, Massimiliano Gallo, Rocco Papaleo, and Massimo Ceccherini. The Italian director puts his name to a remake of French comedy The Players, this time starring Valerio Mastandrea and Riccardo Scamarcio, who is also producing the movie. Filming has wrapped on Gli infedeli, the new film by Stefano Mordini and a remake of the homonymous French film (The Players), which took the box office by storm in 2014, earning itself a grand total of 2.3 million euros. Starring Valerio Mastandrea, Riccardo Scamarcio, Laura Chiatti, Valentina Cervi, Marina Foïs, Massimiliano Gallo and Euridice Axen, Gli Infedeli is an episodic film in the tradition of the Italian-style comedies popularised between the 1950s and the 80s. Through five short stories, we are told of the amorous misadventures of five men, each of them grappling with wives, girlfriends and lovers. It’s an irreverent and amusing though somewhat bitter look at love. Based upon an idea put forward by the actor-director Jean Dujardin, the...

★★☆☆☆ Following a Malickian break between films - his debut Round the Moons Between Earth and Sea was released in 1997 - Giuseppe M. Gaudino tells with For Your Love (2015), the final entry to compete for the Golden Lion at the 72nd Venice Film Festival, a tale of ordinary madness told in an extraordinary but often scattergun way. The woman on the verge of as nervous breakdown is Anna Ruotolo Scaglione, played by Italian actor and director Valeria Golino. A long musical introduction Neapolitan dialect introduces us to Anna as a "capascaqua" or "featherbrain" as the subtitles would have it. However, right from the start Gaudino suggests that Anna is suffering from a quite severe mental illness.
Anna's general unhappiness is already evident from her face, but as if that wasn't enough For Your Love is mostly played out in an ill-conceived monochrome palette reminiscent of those adverts for Calvin Klein's Obsession.

This is the Pure Movies trailer for Loose Cannons, directed by Ferzan Ozpetek and starring Riccardo Scamarcio, Nicole Grimaudo, Alessandro Preziosi, Ennio Fantastichini, Lunetta Savino, Ilaria Occhini, Elena Sofia Ricci, Bianca Nappi, Massimiliano Gallo, Paola Minaccioni and Crescenza Guarnieri. Celebrated award-winning director Ferzan Özpetek’s outrageous family comedy lifts the lid on a multi-generational household coming to terms with a rapidly modernising world, and the broadening social acceptance that comes with it. No other nationality respects their food and family gatherings with the fervour and zest of the Italians, but when it comes to the Cantone family, some things are better left well away from the dinner table and in the closet!
