Netflix has been on a roll with its movie programming lately. Though Covid-19 lockdowns are beginning to ease in many countries, they continue to provide countless hours of much-needed entertainment for people unable to enjoy a typical summer and here’s the best of what arrived this week.
Top of the list is Spike Lee’s new joint Da 5 Bloods. This war drama finds a group of Vietnam veterans returning to the jungle in order to track down some treasure they buried long ago. Lee’s on a hot streak after the Oscar-winning BlacKkKlansman and critics and audiences alike are calling this one of his best movies ever. Now that I’ve seen it, I can finally agree with everyone tipping star Delroy Lindo for awards season success next year.
Also added this week was 2018 Japanese animated movie Okko’s Inn, which walks in the footsteps of Studio Ghibli classics like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.

It’s very rare to find an in-production movie on which virtually nothing is written or known, but that seems to be the case with the horror film Ninety, an Oxymoron Entertainment production that sounds like a cross between Se7en and Natural Born Killers. Director Darren Lynn Bousman says there will be a fun, camp element at play in the film as well.
Who is Darren Lynn Bousman? You ask.
Bousman helmed three installments (II, III, and IV) of the Saw series, which basically created the gore horror genre–or at least the newest generation of gore–and arguably comprises the biggest horror franchise of this century. Only the Final Destination series holds a candle as far as box office and number of sequels. If there’s anyone who understands the trends behind commercially successful horror films–and jaw-droppingly gruesome death scenes–it is Bousman.
It’s hard to find much information about Ninety.

Middle Men
Stars: Luke WIlson, Giovanni Ribisi, Gabriel Macht, James Caan, Kevin Pollak | Written by George Gallo, Andy Weiss | Directed by George Gallo
Essentially Boogie Nights for the internet generation, Middle Men is based on the true story of Christopher Mallick, who here serves as a producer on the film. Taking a very Scorsese-esque slant, the film follows Jack Harris, played by Luke Wilson, who has made a name for himself in more comedic roles in recent years, but here he returns to the more dramatic role and is all the better for it – Wilson should really take more serious roles like this in future. Harris is a family man with a successful career and an idyllic life, who through a series of friend-of-a-friend favours manages to get involved with two would-be geniuses, Buck Dolby (what a name!) and Wayne Beering, played by Macht and Ribisi respectively, who, in a moment of financial frustration,...

Luke Wilson's portrait of a sleazy web-porn hustler was trounced by The Social Network's cleaner moral fibre. Surely there was room for both?
The continual drizzle of pre-release hype and pre-release publicity can be a confusing business for a film critic. Two years ago, there was an awful lot of buzz around a forthcoming film called Middle Men, starring Luke Wilson, about the wild-west world of 1990s internet pornography, when mavericks, sleazeballs and computer geeks figured out how to become seriously filthy rich overnight with web-based smut.
It was based on the not-especially-reliable reminiscences of the movie's own producer, Christopher Mallick, former chief of a digital company called Paycom, a "middleman" internet supplier that hooked up porn producers with porn consumers without, theoretically, sullying its dainty hands with the porn business itself. I remember receiving a lot of advance publicity for this movie in Cannes in 2009, and reading...

Middle Men, Paramount's based on a true story tale about how ePassporte's Christopher Mallick got rich by making it possible to pay for online pornography with your credit card, bombed when it opened last month. Turns out, that wasn't even the bad news.
Visa has now suspended transactions with the virtual payment system -- a move not often seen in the industry. The end result? A lot of people tried to pay for their Internet porn with their prepaid ePassporte accounts only to learn that they no longer had access to their funds. Translation: this would be like logging in to your PayPal account and finding all the funds frozen. Yikes. One customer claims that he's been blocked from accessing nearly a quarter of a million dollars in his account -- which is arguably a good thing. Hasn't anyone told this guy that the Internet is full of free porn?...

If you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing Middle Men yet (check out my review here) then you’re missing out on one of the more original and exciting films to come out this year. For those who have seen the film, you would know that its based on a true story, but what you might not know is that its based on one of the films producers Christopher Mallick.
Mallick is a maverick in every sense of the word, emerging victorious from the Wild West of the burgeoning Internet culture and commerce. He is now using his success to follow his dream of making movies. He’s also got a great mentality about the process, trying to remain true the way it was done when films were truly great and only producing original content. I was fortunate enough to have a lengthy one-on-one interview with Chris where he...

Paramount has released a series of new clips for Middle Men, the "true story" of "the guys who brought XXX to the www." Inspired by producer Christopher Mallick's life, the movie follows businessman Jack Harris (played by Luke Wilson), a stable family man who goes into business with Wayne Beering and Buck Dolby (Giovanni Ribisi and Gabriel Macht), two troubled geniuses who invented the way that pornography is sold over the Internet. While navigating his way through porn stars, Russian mobsters, and the FBI, Harris' new venture makes him one of the wealthiest entrepreneurs of all time, proving that "business is a lot like sex: getting in is easy, pulling out is hard.

Title: Middle Men Directed by: George Gallo Nudity, drugs and several big-name stars in a film “inspired by true events.” While normally these three things are the perfect combination for a big summer hit movie, the new film ‘Middle Men,’ starring Luke Wilson, Giovanni Ribisi, James Caan and Kevin Pollak, falls short on its promises to deliver box office success. Even though marketed as being based on the experiences of producer Christopher Mallick, potential audiences weren’t told much else about the limited-release movie in advance, and will likely forget about as quickly as they forget his name. ‘Middle Man’ follows a mid-1990s businessman, Jack Harris (played by Wilson), who agrees to help a [...]...

Putting porn on the Internet was a no-brainer: Masturbating millions wanted the stuff and were eager to pay for their solitary pleasures. The problem was how to separate these lonely souls from their money digitally.
According to "Middle Men," a new movie "inspired by a true story," this problem was solved by Wayne Beering (Giovanni Ribisi) and Buck Dolby (Gabriel Macht), two over-wound young L.A. hustlers who in 1997 created a computer program to enable online credit-card payments, and then, in a further refinement, hatched the idea of anonymous billing, so that instead of your wife or whoever coming across a credit-card charge from, say, "Milf Wagon Productions," all she would see would be a payment to, say, "24/7 Billing Company." This allowed Wayne and Buck to operate, not as actual pornographers, but...

Photo: Paramount Pictures Talk about Filmmaking 101; Middle Men is a would-be interesting story saddled with cliched trailer music and obnoxious voice over describing everything you see on screen as if you didn't have eyes and a brain of your own. This is a film where the straight men play it straight and everyone else plays it way over the top, and it's all too bad because this is a story that really could have turned a few heads had it been handled differently.
Producer Christopher Mallick, of whom the story is loosely based, describes the film in the press notes as something of a Wall Street-like feature only instead of having to do with the stock market it's dealing with the porn industry. Of course, as he points out, it's not about porn. He likes to say it's about greed, which it is for some parties involved,...

If you.ve been reading my interviews with the cast of Middle Men, you should have an idea who Christopher Mallick is. Without him, the movie wouldn.t exist, and I don.t just mean because he is the film.s producer. Mallick is, in fact, the man that the film is about, Luke Wilson playing Mallick under the name Jack Harris. If you.re doing your math correctly (and I sure hope you are), you.ve figured out that Mallick is also the man responsible for the birth of internet porn. Feel free to leave your thank yous in the comments section. Sitting down with George Gallo, perhaps best known for writing both Midnight Run and Bad Boys, the pair discussed developing the story as a feature film, avoiding the .porn movie. label and an incident where Giovanni Ribisi gets body slammed. It.s all waiting for you below.

HollywoodNews.com: Not many producer-financiers make movies about themselves, especially early in their career.
However, Christopher Mallick, whose film “Middle Men” opens tomorrow, has lived such a topsy-turvy life filled with mobsters and X-rated actresses, he can only wish it was fictitious.
Mallick, a Texas entrepreneur, was at the forefront of the adult entertainment industry’s explosion on the internet, minting millions as a billing middle party. Leaving his seedy past behind, Mallick divulged his story to “Bad Boys” scribe George Gallo.
“Middle Men” tells the story of two Los Angeles-based loose cannons played by Giovanni Ribisi and Gabriel Macht who hatch the idea of launching the internet’s first adult entertainment website. The million-dollar venture becomes too unwieldy for them to handle and a straight-laced businessman played by Luke Wilson steps in to shepherd the operation, ultimately making the website a billing party to several portals.

Middle Men is a film that harkens back to the days when cinema was truly original. It’s a gritty story full of witty dialogue, fast camera work and compelling characters while examining a subject that is both taboo and universal: Internet pornography.
The story is based on the real life story of producer Christopher Mallick, who became entwined in the burgeoning Internet culture and the commerce possibilities that spawned from it in the late ’90s. Directed with the confidence of an established auteur, George Gallo (Trapped in Paradise, Midnight Run) mixes humor and action with a distinctive style and an impressive ensemble cast. To draw the inevitable comparison, Middle Men is the Boogie Nights of internet porn — and that’s a good thing.

In the movie Middle Men, Luke Wilson plays a character thrust into a bizarre story with even more bizarre characters, but the end result is the birth of not only internet porn, but online commerce as we know it today. Based on the life in times of producer Christopher Mallick in the mid-1990s, Wilson.s character is forced to juggle not only the two drug addicts that invented the system, but the Russian mafia, the FBI, and a massively corrupt lawyer all while trying to maintain a family life back in Texas. Not exactly the easiest of jobs. I had the opportunity to sit down with Wilson and discuss the film, including potential hesitancy over the film.s subject matter, the atmosphere on set, and what it.s like playing a character based on a man that is standing no more than 20 feet away from you. Beau Bridges has rounded out the principal cast of "Columbus Circle," an indie thriller directed and co-written by George Gallo.
"Circle" centers on reclusive heiress Abigail (Selma Blair), who hasn't left her upscale Manhattan apartment building in nearly two decades. She's in contact with only two people: her building's concierge, Klandermann (Kevin Pollak), with whom she communicates via notes, and Dr. Raymond Fontaine (Bridges), a longtime family friend and her sole confidant for most of her life.
Abigail is brought face-to-face with her fears when a detective (Giovanni Ribisi) shows up to investigate a homicide next door and a new couple (Amy Smart and Jason Lee) moves in to that apartment.
Principal photography on the movie, co-written by Gallo and Pollak, has started in Los Angeles.
Oxymoron Entertainment's Christopher Mallick and Blue Star Entertainment's William Sherak and Jason Shuman are producing.

On a recent episode of his newly launched internet talk show, comedian/actor Kevin Pollak interviewed Christopher Mallick, a man whose life story has since been made into the upcoming flick Middle Men. In the mid 90s Mallick was brought in to help two inexperienced business men who were about to change the porn industry and the internet forever. On his journey he wrestles with his morals and struggles not to drown in a sea of conmen, mobsters, drug addicts, and porn stars. In the interview Mallick, now a film producer, also briefly talks about the defunct Korean remake 10A-10B he was working on that has since become Columbus Circle. Middle Men stars Luke Wilson, Giovanni Ribisi, Gabriel Macht, Kevin Pollak, James Caan, Laura Ramsey, Jacinda Barrett, Robert Forster, Christopher McDonald, Terry Crews, Rade Serbedzija and Kelsey Grammer. It is still without a release date, but during the interview...

To be filmed in Los Angeles, Columbus Circle is actually a Manhattan apt. set project which focuses on a reclusive heiress (Blair) in an upscale Manhattan apartment building who is brought face-to-face with her fears when a detective (Ribisi) shows up to investigate a homicide next door and a new couple (Smart and Lee) moves in to that apartment. I haven't seen Chul-soo Park's 1995 original feature 301/302, but the premise sounds a little silly as Marisa Tomei and Liv Tyler have signed on to star in the director's attempt to bring his South Korean original to America with an English adaptation that goes wild with the title -- 10A/10B. The film is described as a psychological thriller that will explore the relationship and consequences that result when a culinary perfectionist, portrayed by Tyler, and an actress with a failing career, played by Tomei, become neighbors in a loft apartment building. I'm not sure if how close it will stick to the original when it comes to the differences between the two neighbors, but the Netflix plot description gave me a laugh when it says, "Song-Hee likes to cook, and Yun-hee hates food. And so begins a strange friendship that attracts scrutiny when one of them disappears." I just...
