Truth may be stranger than fiction, but it’s often scarier as well. After all, it’s not unusual for real life mysteries and deaths to leave Hollywood in the dust when it comes to producing genuine fear. With that in mind, we’ve previously published a couple of lists celebrating some of the scariest documentaries ever made.
However, there’s no shortage of authentic scares when it comes to filmmaking, and that’s why we’re back with another list recommending six more scary documentaries that horror fans might enjoy. After all, whether you’re into true crime or paranormal investigations, there’s something for everyone when it comes to non-fiction thrills.
As usual, we’ll be abiding by a couple of rules when selecting our movies. First of all, no docs that have been previously featured on any of our lists. Second, we’ll be excluding mockumentaries like...

Stars: Daniel Lutz, Laura Didio, Neme Alperstein | Directed by Eric Walter
For most people, “The Amityville Horror” was just a movie, but for Daniel Lutz, who lived at the infamous house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York, it was real life. In 1975, when Daniel was 10, his family lived there for just 28 days before fleeing in terror, the victims of widespread supernatural happenings that pushed them to the brink of madness and had them fearing for their lives. A media circus began that never fully ended.
Up until their recent deaths, his parents George and Kathy Lutz, never went back on a single claim. In the 35 years since the ordeal, Daniel has never spoken on the record about his experiences. This is his story, in his words. For the first time in 35 years, child eyewitness Daniel Lutz recounts his version of the infamous Amityville haunting that terrified his family in...

My Amityville Horror is a documentary making the rounds on the VOD circuit, and is out in limited release around the country. You can find our review of the film here, but recently we had the opportunity to talk with director Eric Walter about the project.
Before we got started, Eric Walter made it clear that he was a huge Famous Monsters fan, that he’s been one ever since he was a kid, and his dad collected the magazine. Perhaps he still does. Now, he’s come full circle, talking with us about his first feature film, a documentary entitled My Amityville Horror, that delves into the infamous hauntings that took place at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, NY that tore the Lutz family apart and made them household names for decades, as the specter of what did or didn’t happen loomed over the rest of their lives, including one Daniel Lutz,...

To watch The Amityville Horror and be terrified is one thing, but what about hearing the actual ghost story that inspired Jay Anson’s original book? Yes, the movie is all based on stories recalled by the Lutz family while living in one of the most fabled houses in Long Island history, although there’s much controversy over the actual details – and that’s where documentary filmmaker Eric Walter comes in with his brand new film My Amityville Horror. Yup, this young truth-seeker was able to have George and Kathy Lutz’s son Daniel open up about the experiences he had in the house, unleashing all the horrifying details in an attempt to let viewers decide what to believe.

Title: My Amityville Horror Director: Eric Walter Over the past three-and-a-half decades, the paranormal events at a house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, a suburban tract along the south shore of Long Island, New York, have inspired all kinds of books — most notably Jay Anson’s 1977 bestseller — and 10 movies. Make that 11, now. Director Eric Walter’s new film, however, is a bit different. “My Amityville Horror” is a documentary look at the events that terrified young Daniel Lutz and his family in late 1975, as told from the perspective and recollection of Lutz himself. In December of ’75, young Daniel, part of a newly blended family, moved into the [ Read More ]

Perhaps you've seen one of the many film adaptations of "The Amityville Horror," the book which is based on true (very gruesome) events that took place on Long Island in 1974.
In the latest development, Danny Lutz, a member of the family that moves in after the series of mass murders take place, is telling his side in a new documentary, "My Amityville Horror."
Lutz recalls his time at the house, which apparently included seeing hundreds upon hundreds of flies, slamming doors and other very dark occurrences. Needless to say, the family left 28 days later. The movie explores newly-revealed elements to the story that most may not know about, as well as glimpses into the infamous house at 112 Ocean Avenue.
Check out the trailer for "My Amityville Horror," which is being release by IFC Film and hits theaters this Friday.

Dysfunction Junction: Walter Revisits Source of Classic Horror Film with Mixed Results
Thanks to Stuart Rosenberg’s 1979 film adaptation of Jay Anson’s infamous novel, “The Amityville Horror”, along with its various sequels, not to mention that high profile 2005 remake with Ryan Reynolds, the spooky tale of a family plagued by a series of chilling paranormal activities has long been cemented in the pop cultural psyche. For his documentary debut, filmmaker Eric Walter revisits this notorious case with My Amityville Horror, scoring an exclusive interview with Daniel Lutz, the eldest child of the Amityville family, given the chance to share his side of the story nearly thirty-five years later. The resulting documentary is, at times, unnerving, but more often a subjective exercise that reveals one of America’s most famous hauntings to be an overblown façade, and Daniel Lutz to be an intriguing case study as a victim of psychological (and not preternatural) abuse.

Written/directed by: Eric Walter
Featuring: Daniel Lutz, Laura Didio
Survival is a common theme in horror films. The notion of outwitting the bad guy in any given film is the motor of a standard plot. But what if the events in question are supposedly real and someone who lived through it decides to come forward and give their side of the story decades later? The audience would be expecting something groundbreaking and chilling. Unfortunately, in the case of director Eric Walter's My Amityville Horror, the titular story comes off as a tepid and unsubstantial vision of something that is potentially much darker.
The storyteller for the majority of the film is Daniel Lutz, Kathy Lutz's oldest son and the adopted child of George Lutz. He maintains throughout the film that he must tell this story as he lived it, but he is also terrified to do so.

Hitting VOD and digital download March 15 (from IFC), My Amityville Horror finds Daniel Lutz, son of Kathy and stepson of George and one of the central figures of the original Amityville Haunting recount his version of events. What transpires is an often sad, sometimes weirdly hilarious portrait of a then-kid wrapped in the middle of media phenomenon, supernatural intrigue and coming-of-age in a disastrous family, and all the trauma it's left behind. Director Eric Walter chronicles Lutz's confessional, as well as meetings with psychiatrists and even paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren. Throughout, Lutz alternates between open, defensive, aggressive, ridiculous and belligerent. It's a gripping watch that also features, considering the talk that comes directly before it, the best onscreen guitar solo going.

The Imposter
Directed by Bart Layton
Your mind play tricks on you all the time. You’re presented with a clear-cut fact, something that is immutably true, and you doubt it. You wake up in the middle of the night, but your mind convinces you that you’ve had a full night’s sleep or it’s actually mid-morning and you’re running late. Someone you care about hasn’t answered your call, so your mind tells you something terrible—a car accident, maybe—has happened to them, even if the real answer is they just didn’t pick up their phone. Why does anyone—and we all do it–play these games on their psyches? What compels us to believe a convenient lie as opposed to accepting the cold, harsh truth? Such heady questions are at the center of The Imposter, a high-intensity and thrilling new documentary… (read the...

Okay, don't roll your eyes quite yet. My Amityville Horror is not another silly Amityville sequel. It is actually a documentary on one of the family members that lived in the real Amityville house.
The film follows Daniel Lutz as he recounts his memories of living in the notorious Amityville house in the early 1970s. His family became famous at the time going around the country recounting the haunting events that were supposed to have taken place in that simple upper-middle-class home. Their story inspired a best-selling novel and then a blockbuster film (plus many forgettable sequels).
Daniel, who was just a young boy at the time, had never really talked publicly about the events until he agreed to do this documentary. Regardless of whether the hauntings took place or not, his stepfather was the...

My Amityville Horror
Directed by Eric Walter
USA, 2012
It’s been said that truth is stranger than fiction, but for over 35 years, Daniel Lutz made the claim that it was much more sinister; especially since a slew of horror movies were based on his story. In 1974, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. shot and killed his family of two brothers, two sisters, and two parents while they were sleeping in their home on 112 Ocean Avenue, Amityville, New York. Autopsies would discover no traces of drugs or inebriates used, which was strange considering how the bodies were found: in their beds, apparently unmoved. Without the use of a silencer or intoxicants, many believed that supernatural elements were involved.
A year later, Daniel Lutz and his family moved into the home, which was marked at a discount price. They packed up and left 28 days later, claiming that they were terrorized by paranormal activity. In My Amityville Horror,...

Day Six of Toronto After Dark 2012 has officially wrapped. This was a great evening of films, with one good feature, one great feature, and what was probably my favorite pub night of the festival so far (more on that later).
Things kicked off with a Canadian short called Eviction, which features a priest’s video journal of what I would describe as his attempt at self-exorcism. Aside from The Exorcist, I’ve never been too huge a fan of possession-related films; probably due to the whole religious aspect. This one is worth a watch, though, as it is subtle and features an interesting performance from its lead (and only) actor, who essentially does the entire thing in one take.
That short was a perfect lead-in to the first feature of the night, My Amityville Horror, which is a documentary that focuses on Daniel Lutz, one of the now-reclusive children of...

There's been a lot of complete fiction published about what went on in the Amityville house made famous in the book and movie of the the 1970s, but here's what we know for sure: in 1974, a young man killed his entire family in their Long Island home, and then a year later a family by the name of Lutz moved into the house. By all reports, the Lutz family vacated their new home in less than a month. Forget haunted houses, glowing red eyes, and creepy voices that grumble "get out." That's all fiction. The facts that are tied, very loosely, to The Amityville Horror are shocking, sobering, and tragic -- so it only makes sense that someone would eventually want to produce a documentary about the actual truth behind one of America's most "beloved" haunted houses. Unfortunately the new documentary entitled My Amityville Horror provides only one small fragment of the Lutz story,...

It’s hard to believe that in a month and two days that Michael & I, along with two other writers from St. Louis, will be making our annual 14 hour drive to Austin, Texas for one of our favorite things/times of the year, Fantastic Fest. Fantastic Fest is truly a unique event. There’s plenty of room for arthouse films and, on some occasions, the big awards players, but one theater that hosts There Will Be Blood might, the next night, see the premiere of something you’d catch on a weird cable station at 3 A.M. You don’t get that at Venice.
Such a programming mentality is reflected in the second set of titles: We have Leos Carax‘s acclaimed Holy Motors, Rian Johnson‘s Looper, horror anthology The ABCs of Death (as if it could premiere anywhere else), Sinister, and a whole batch of films I’d never heard of up until now. It’s wonderfully eclectic, and it only makes me wish I could be there come late September.
See the lineup below:

There's already a couple of Amityville Horror movie projects being produced these days. Both of them are found footage style films based on the infamous haunted house. Then today I came across a couple of teaser trailers for a interesting looking documentary called My Amityville Horror in which Daniel Lutz recounts his version of what went on during the Amityville haunting when he was a kid that caused his family to move out after living there for only 28 days, and how it screwed him up.
Here's the Synopsis:
For the first time in 35 years, Daniel Lutz recounts his version of the infamous Amityville haunting that terrified his family in 1975. George and Kathleen Lutz’s story went on to inspire a best-selling novel and the subsequent films have continued to fascinate audiences today. Why He's On Our Radar: Eric Walter makes his directorial debut with the intensely creepy documentary "My Amityville Horror," which recently world premiered at the just wrapped Fantasia Fest in Montreal. The film presents a first-person account by Daniel Lutz, the eldest son of the family behind the allegedly true story of the "Amityville Horror." For the first time, Daniel Lutz offers his take on his experiences living at 112 Ocean Avenue, the house his parents publicly claimed was haunted by paranormal activity when they lived there in 1975. What's Next: "I'm currently developing several original film projects apart from 'Amityville,'" Walter told Indiewire, though he wouldn't specify. "In many ways, I've also been haunted by the Amityville story for years now, so I'm actually looking forward to the opportunity to explore a variety of different subjects in the future and expanding my palette of work."...
