Remember the glory days of 2018 moviegoing? Those with MoviePass can now relive the rise and fall of the company that offered customers a subscription service to watch one movie a day for the price of just $9.95 a month with a new documentary. MoviePass, MovieCrash, which premiered at SXSW, now has its first trailer ahead of an HBO and Max debut at the end of the month.
Company co-founder Stacy Spikes was interviewed by John Fink for The Film Stage on the subject of the company’s relaunch after their business model proved unsustainable, the state of the movie industry today, and his memoir Black Founder. In his review of MoviePass, MovieCrash, Fink recommends Spikes’ book as an alternative to the film, which he calls “a detailed overview that is at times a little too dry to find the irony and injustice at the core of this story.”

When Quentin Dupieux’s comedy about an ill-fated film set, “The Second Act,” opened the Cannes Film Festival May 14, it will be just one of several movies about filmmaking and filmmakers to touch down on the Croisette. After all, directors Christophe Honoré, Paul Schrader and Josh Mond are among the other prominent filmmakers who are ready to premiere semi-autobiographical stories.
Honoré’s in-competition comedy, “Marcello Mio,” casts Chiara Mastroianni as a version of herself who — after a director compares her to her late father, Marcello Mastroianni — dresses in drag and takes on his identity. Schrader’s in-competition drama, “Oh, Canada,” focuses on a documentary filmmaker (Richard Gere) telling his life story in a doc. Mond’s drama “It Doesn’t Matter” follows two friends chronicling their lives on video. Leos Carax’s 40-minute “C’est pas moi” is partly a self-portrait, with footage from his films and life.

DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot will now go on Sept. 27 instead of Sept. 20.
The move comes in the wake of Paramount’s animated Transformers One parking on Sept. 20 (instead of Sept. 13) as the studio needed to get a foothold on Imax auditoriums.
We heard that Transformers One was moved to get further away from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice as that Warner Bros Tim Burton directed, Michael Keaton starring sequel is expected to scare up a ton of September cash; that movie opening on Sept. 6.
The Wild Robot will now square off against Lionsgate’s Alexandre Aja directed horror Halle Berry thriller, Never Let Go as well as the tenth anniversary Imax re-release of Paramount/Warner Bros’ Christopher Nolan sci-fi movie, Interstellar.

DreamWorks Animation film “The Wild Robot,” based on Peter Brown’s YA novels of the same name, has a primo September 20, 2024 release date. Oscar winner Nyong’o voices the title character, Rozzum unit 7134 — aka Roz.
In the film as in the novel trilogy, Roz the robot becomes shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling (Kit Connor). Among Roz’s friends are fox Fink (Pascal), opossum Pinktail (Catherine O’Hara), and goose Longneck (Bill Nighy). But when Roz crosses paths with another robot, Vontra (Stephanie Hsu), things go a bit haywire.
The film’s tagline reads: “Sometimes to survive, we must become more than we were programmed to be.

Peter Brown’s 2016 bestseller The Wild Robot transforms into a beautifully animated film featuring the voice of Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o as the titular robot, Roz. The two-and-a-half-minute trailer features “What a Wonderful World,” performed by Nyong’o, and only one line of dialogue: “Sometimes, to survive, we must become more than we were programmed to be.”
The voice cast also includes Emmy nominee Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) as fox Fink, Emmy winner Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek) as opossum Pinktail, Oscar nominee Bill Nighy (Living) as goose Longneck, Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as gosling Brightbill, and Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) as Vontra, a robot that will intersect with Roz’s life on the island. Emmy winner Mark Hamill (Star Wars franchise), Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows), and Emmy nominee Ving Rhames (Mission: Impossible) also lend their voices to the 2024 animated adaptation.

Man, humans are the worst. There's probably a good reason why we keep gravitating towards stories and myths that explore what life would be like with minimal involvement by us pesky people -- or even go so far as to remove us from the equation altogether. Animated classics like "The Iron Giant" and "Wall-e" took the basic ideas of robots attempting to understand the natural world and spun those respective concerns into two of the very best movies of the last 25 years. Now, "The Wild Robot" looks set to tackle very similar concerns in what sure looks like another win for the medium of animation.

"Sometimes to survive we must become more than we were programmed to be." Universal + DreamWorks Animation have unveiled the first official trailer for The Wild Robot, their next big animated movie. It's arriving in theaters in September later this year, but with Kung Fu Panda 4 opening this week, the trailer is out to play in front of that. After a shipwreck, an intelligent robot called Roz is stranded on an uninhabited island. To survive the harsh environment, Roz bonds with the island's animals and cares for an orphaned baby goose. A powerful story (based on the books) about the discovery of self, a thrilling examination of the bridge between technology and nature and a moving exploration of what it means to be alive and connected to all living things, The Wild Robot is written & directed by three-time Oscar nominee Chris Sanders—of How to Train Your Dragon, The Croods,...

In an entirely objective and deeply serious critique, filmmaker Joel Coen has reviewed his brother’s new movie Drive-Away Dolls without being mean and petty even once.
If you want a masterclass in writing a professional film review, look no further than filmmaker Joel Coen’s measured, thoughtful critique of Drive-Away Dolls, the new thriller which just happens to be directed by Joel’s brother, Ethan.
“Mr Coen’s apparent goal – aside from making Tommy Wiseau look like Ingmar Bergman – was to replicate a 90s B comedy,” Joel Coen writes on Substack. “That he failed to clear even that subterranean bar is the only interesting thing about the film. It is truly stunning to watch a man set out to make the spiritual descendant of Mannequin 2 and then fail…”
The review then descends into a maelstrom of name-calling, childhood bitterness and score-settling that we won’t repeat here. In fact,...

Quick, name a superhero with a more cynical perspective than Batman. Okay, sure there’s Spawn, but I meant in mainstream comics. Yeah, Punisher, but how about in DC Comics? Sure, there’s John Constantine. But I mean a character less suitable for Christmas stories. What’s that you say? Constantine once crushed the bones of St. Nicolas and snorted them into a powder? And Lobo murdered Santa?
Okay, the point is that Batman doesn’t seem like the type of guy who would make for a good Christmas story. Spider-Man can deliver presents while swinging across New York City and Superman has carried Santa’s slay more than once, but Mr. Vengeance doesn’t even like leaving Gotham. Why would he bother with the North Pole?
And yet, Batman has been at the center of several Christmas stories over the year, and some of them are pretty great. Here...

As the special-effects makeup chief for “Saturday Night Live,” Louie Zakarian often has interesting demands put on his time. He once transformed Kate McKinnon into an offbeat mermaid. And he worked with Kyle Mooney to create the Baby Yoda character who made frequent appearances on “Weekend Update.”
These days, Zakarian gets even more outlandish asks, thanks to Sarah Sherman, the “SNL” cast member who might, during one week, ask him to devise a fake seagull that can be impaled in her torso while moving its legs, and, in another, order up a costume so she can dress as the oddball Six Flags mascot, but still get back to normal for a subsequent sketch 10 minutes later.

This is Day 96 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Zachary Quinto, Sarah Paulson and Jessica Lange joined a SAG-AFTRA picket Tuesday in New York City as members of their union paid tribute to the strike captains who have run the picket lines at multiple locations in Manhattan during the past 96 days, including the week since talks between striking actors and the studios collapsed.
With them at the morning rally in front of NBCUniversal headquarters at Rockefeller Plaza was another union crew: members and staff of Broadway’s theatrical Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (Sdc).
“What you are fighting for — fair wages, participation in success and the stewarding of your craft — are all things the members of Sdc understand,” the union’s executive director, Laura Penn, told picketers.

The Idol, the most controversial show of the year, or one could argue, of the past few years, has come to an end with a fizzle rather than a bang. In terms of substance, we can surely say the last two episodes of The Idol have more than the rest of the show put together. Although that’s not saying much, considering the show was cut down to just 5 episodes. There’s one major loophole in the series, and that’s about Tedros’ character and how he goes from pimp to wimp in a matter of days. The problem also arises because we don’t really know the timeline of the show until it’s mentioned, which happens very briefly in the last episode. Let’s get straight into everything that happens in the last episode of The Idol.

The Idol Season 1 was supposed to have six episodes in total, but it was revealed that creative differences had taken the show in a slightly new direction. As a result, the season would be one episode less.
Even without knowing about the behind-the-scenes happening with the production, anyone who watched The Idol Season 1 Episode 5 could feel a massive shift in the show's tone as everything felt unfocused and rushed.
The first half of the episode saw Jocelyn go all out to try and reign in her life and career that'd been falling apart.
To do that, she needed to get from under Tedros' influence and then put on a showcase for The Suits, who made sure the cogs in the machine that is her career rotated were well greased, and no teeth were missing.
That whole scene at the house must have been the only thing that felt true to the show.

“The Idol” — or at least its first season — came to a conclusion after five episodes on Sunday night, but not without the usual dose of darkly sexual ups and downs for its jewel-eyed, rat-tailed stars.
Titled “Jocelyn Forever,” the episode begins with Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) at her home, working on a song with prolific hip-hop producer Mike Dean (played by himself). As she sings lyrics Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye) prompted her to write — “My kinda love / Force me, choke me ’till I pass out” — it becomes clear that the ex-pimp’s coke habit has caught up to him. Sweating, with his hair beginning to fall out of his famous rat-tail, he interrupts the jam session to give some notes. Jocelyn lets him know he isn’t welcome to do that anymore.
“You’re gonna kick out your only source of inspiration?” Tedros jeers. Jocelyn shoots back, “I...

As ahead-of-the-curve as Prince was with music, he was behind in his discovery of one of the most famous bands in the world — The Beatles. He also missed all of their early discography. The first song by The Beatles that Prince really listened to was “Good Morning Good Morning.” Here’s the moment The Purple One first discovered The Beatles, as told by his band.

“He’d never really heard the Beatles until Matt and I played him Sgt. Pepper,” Drummer Bobby Z. told Billboard in 2016.
In an interview with Diffuser in 2017, Bobby looked back at the moment of discovery.

With nearly 34 complete seasons and just under 750 episodes, The Simpsons holds the record for being the longest-running animated series, scripted primetime series and sitcom. And, as it goes, it is showing no signs of slowing down, with one of the show’s most prolific talents, Hank Azaria, saying The Simpsons has its sights set on season 40.
“I wonder about that, too,” Hank Azaria told People of The Simpsons’ run. “You know, we’re doing season 35 and 36. I would guess that it would probably go to 40. It seems to be doing well.” While Azaria specifically cites season 40, there’s a feeling he means it will go to at least 40. “Whatever the standards are now, we seem to be doing well. People still enjoy making it. They seem to want the show. So I imagine we keep going. The voices don’t really age. So we can keep doing it. And the animation doesn’t age.

Michael Stipe, Chvrches, and Coldplay are just a few of over 60 artists who’ve contributed to the 2023 iteration of EarthPercent’s annual Earth Day compilation album. Proceeds will benefit the Brian Eno-founded charity’s grant giving program, which directly benefits organizations fighting the ongoing climate crisis.
Stipe — a frequent eco-advocate — contributes the track “Give Me a Hand,” a moody art-pop number featuring guest vocals from folk singer and disability advocate Gaelynn Lea. Meanwhile, Chvrches reunite with their pal Robert Smith of The Cure for a rendition of their song “How Not to Drown,” recorded live at the Brixton Academy. Coldplay tap H.E.R. for another live track, this one being their ballad “Let Somebody Go” at the River Plate.
Also featured on the compilation are Eno, Dry Cleaning, dodie, Bring Me the Horizon, Julia Holter, Mystery Jets, and many more. Stream the album via Bandcamp below.

The U.S. Army will run ads this Saturday during the NCAA Final Four Tournament using existing footage from older commercials and unused material from the new Be All You Can Be campaign instead of featuring actor Jonathan Majors.
A day after the Creed III actor was arrested last weekend for allegedly assaulting a woman in New York, the Army announced that it would be pulling ads from its new campaign aimed at enlisting Gen Z. Majors’ rep has said he is “completely innocent.”
Although other ads from the Majors-led campaign will be postponed, the repurposed ads will help ensure the Army avoids losses in its planned $70 million advertising buy.
“We are absolutely able to utilize a majority of what we have invested,” Maj. Gen. Alex Fink, head of Army Enterprise Marketing, said in an interview with the Associated Press. “We think that we’ll have some brand new creative...

Jonathan Majors’ ad campaign for the U.S. Army, pulled after his Saturday arrest for allegedly assaulting a woman during a domestic dispute and since scrubbed from the organization’s official channels, was no ordinary sequence of commercials. The two spots, filmed in the Southern California area in January, were crucial components of a much larger ongoing rebranding effort for the military force as it pivots its recruitment message for Gen Z in the years following the Afghanistan drawdown.
In the days prior to Majors’ arrest (in a statement the Army said it was “deeply concerned by the allegations”), The Hollywood Reporter had spoken with the campaign’s architects about its rollout: Major General Alex Fink, head of Army Enterprise Marketing — equivalent to a corporate chief marketing officer — as well as John Carstens, executive creator director of Team Ddb, its ad firm. Both discussed why Majors, whose criminal defense attorney has announced he’s “completely innocent,...

“Five Days at Memorial” was developed by John Ridley and Carlton Cuse, but production designer Matthew Davies considers someone else to be the anchor: Pulitzer Prize winner Sheri Fink, who wrote the non-fiction book, “Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital,” on which the show is based.
The Apple TV+ limited series follows the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina at Memorial Medical Center in New Orleans. As conditions deteriorated over the course of five days, between the loss of power and flooding, doctors and caregivers had to take drastic measures to care for patients while attempting to bring them to safety one by one. Opening this year’s International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), “All You See” explores what it feels like to no longer be seen, but stared at. Told through four parallel stories of immigrants in the Netherlands, the film investigates what it feels like to be a foreigner in the country. It is a deeply personal project for director Niki Padidar, who makes her feature debut after taking home the IDFA Best Children’s Documentary Award for her short film “Ninoc” in 2015.
Nominated for the IDFA Award for Best Dutch Film and the IDFA Award for Best First Feature, “All You See” is produced by director Menna Laura Meijer. English musician Fink pens both the film’s score and original song, “Beforever Like a Curse.”

As a disabled person for whom going to the hospital is already a terrifying experience, “Five Days at Memorial” triggered me. It took several weeks to get over watching all eight episodes of the Apple TV+ limited series, an adaptation of Sheri Fink’s nonfiction investigation “Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital.” The book and the TV show focus on the doctors and patients stranded at Memorial Medical Center during Hurricane Katrina. When the floodwaters receded in 2005, 45 dead bodies were discovered in the hospital’s basement, with allegations that at least two patients were euthanized.
“Five Days” is based on a book about doctors’ experiences, but those experiences hinge on questions surrounding euthanasia and the disabled. Presenting disabled people in emergencies as nameless characters stuck in some kind of moral gray area tells us that if you’re disabled, “first do no harm” does not apply.

July saw many adapted stories head to screens both large and small, sourced from novels, comic books and more, and August is no different with a bevy of book adaptations on the horizon.
Last month gave us adaptations of Delia Owens’ wildly popular novel “Where the Crawdads Sing” , Mark Greaney’s spy thriller “The Gray Man” and in series form “Paper Girls” on Prime Video starring Ali Wong and Jason Mantzoukas.
August also has a slate of book adaptations landing in theaters and on streamers. Two of them came from graphic novels, and one might sound familiar to fans of George R. R. Martin and “Game of Thrones.” For kids, there is the final season of “Locke & Key” as well as “Lost Ollie” which comes from “Ollie’s Odyssey.”

This Friday, Five Days at Memorial premieres on Apple TV+ with three episodes.
Based on the bestselling non-fiction book of the same name by Sherri Fink, it's a harrowing, thought-provoking, and sometimes gruesome look at five days at Memorial Hospital in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
It's a massive undertaking, but co-creators and executive producers Carlton Cuse and John Ridley have a firm grasp of the material.
Cuse and Ridley not only wrote the series but, between them, directed the first five episodes. Those are the episodes that will stick with you long after the show's conclusion.
You'll be dropped right into the commotion at Memorial on Friday with the three-episode premiere.
Hurricane Katrina elicits thoughts on the nature of the storm, but it was when the levees broke that New Orleans was left unprepared and unable to, quite literally, weather the storm.

Apple TV+'s new miniseries, "Five Days at Memorial" - out Aug. 12 - traces five harrowing days at a New Orleans hospital in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Pairing archival and news footage with the fictionalized scenes, the show reminds viewers that the chaotic time period that followed the natural disaster really happened not even 20 years ago. How much of the fictional onscreen story is based in reality? Quite a lot, as it turns out.
What Really Happened at Memorial Medical Center?
"Five Days at Memorial" is based on a nonfiction book by the same name, "Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital" by Sheri Fink. The book, in turn, expands on an article that won Fink the Pulitzer Prize, "The Deadly Choices at Memorial," published as a joint project by ProPublica and The New York Times in 2009.
