HBO Max is continuing to build up its original programming slate with three new projects.
Variety has learned that the nascent streamer has given pilot orders to the half-hour dramedy “Generation” and the hour-long drama “Red Bird Lane,” as well as a pilot production commitment for the one-hour drama “Rules of Magic.” All three projects hail from Warner Bros. Television.
“Rules of Magic” is based on the novels “Rules of Magic” and “Practical Magic” by Alice Hoffman. “Practical Magic” was previously adapted into a film in 1998 starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
Set in 1960s New York City, the series follows three troubled siblings — Franny, Jet and Vincent Owens — who wrestle with “abnormalities” that have kept them isolated. But the tumultuous times unearth the extraordinary discovery that they are, in fact, descendants of a bloodline of witches. The HBO Max streaming service has announced with a trio of pilot orders that it is going into business with Melissa Rosenberg (Jessica Jones), John Wells (ER, The West Wing) and Lena Dunham (Girls).
Rosenberg is among the executive producers and writers for Rules of Magic, an “epic, generational family drama set in 1960s New York City” and in which three siblings — Franny, Jet and Vincent Owens — wrestle with “abnormalities” that have kept them isolated. Descended from a bloodline of witches, the three will deal with grief, war, bigotry and dark magic, not to mention a centuries-old curse designed to keep them away from love.

The film is based on a novel of the same name by Sara Gran, and the story follows a “young architect who may be the victim of demonic possession or simply may be losing her mind.” It sounds like it will make for an interesting horror movie and here are some additional details thanks to the book description:

Amanda—a successful architect in a happy marriage—finds her life going off kilter by degrees. She starts smoking again, and one night for no reason, without even the knowledge that she's doing it, she burns her husband with a cigarette. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth director, Guillermo del Toro, has signed on to develop a TV series based on Corinne May Botz’s book, The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death, at HBO. Del Toro will be joined by Southland writer Sara Gran on the project.
The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death series will follow grandmother, dollhouse-maker, and master criminal investigator, Frances Glessner Lee as she becomes obsessed with solving brutal crimes, and even creating elaborate dollhouse replicas of real crime scenes to aid in investigations.
No word on whether the series will try to take on true-life crime stories in the same way The Newsroom has tackled real-life news stories, but I think doing something like that would add a new and interesting layer to the show.

The running joke with Guillermo del Toro over the past few years is that he has so many projects in development that he'll never actually get to 90% of them. Between producing and directing movies, writing novels and even co-developing video games, it's a wonder that the guy has time to sleep, much less add even more projects to his plate. Now it appears that he is starting to dip his feet into television as well. A couple of years ago it was announced that he would executive produce a new Incredible Hulk series on ABC. While that project is still in development, he is also about to make the jump to HBO with a new show called Nutshell Studies. According to THR, HBO has optioned the series, which is based on the book The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death by Corinne May Botz. She also created an art exhibition based...

No, it’s not squirrel porn: Botz’s 2004 non-fiction tome permits a glimpse into the mind of a master criminal investigator. In this case, one Frances Glessner Lee, a wealthy grandmother. But far from just dabbling in crime solving a la Jessica Fletcher, this real-life ‘tec founded the Department of Legal Medicine at Harvard in 1936 (despite being denied entry to the college because of her gender when she was younger) and was made an honorary captain of the New Hampshire Police.Lee became even more famous for her “Nutshell Studies” in the 1940s and 50s,...

HBO has optioned the rights to Corinne May Botz' 2004 book "The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death" for Sara Gran to adapt and exec produce with Guillermo del Toro, who will direct. Yes, Del Toro is prepping the epic monsters vs. robots "Pacific Rim" for release next July, in addition to developing a live-action Hulk series at ABC. For her part Gran is busy writing TNT's "Southland" and has a series of detective novels, "Claire Dewitt," set to be adapted by Warner Horizon. -"Arbitrage" writer-director Nicholas Jarecki is already looking ahead, as the film is scoring in a limited release and on VOD. In an interview with ThePlaylist, Jarecki says his sophomore feature (which he's taking his time writing) will owe some debts to "Chinatown" and "The Conversation." He states: "It's a detective story set in Los Angeles that deals with a young man who's a surveillance expert, who...

You know what Guillermo del Toro needs? More projects, man! If we didn't know any better, we'd swear the guy has a secret factory somewhere that does nothing but pop out clones to help him juggle multiple projects.

Guillermo del Toro is currently prepping Pacific Rim, developing a live-action Hulk series, working on updates of Pinocchio and Beauty And The Beast, maybe working on Hellboy 3, and also running his own production company, but even this typically busy workload cannot preclude del Toro from putting his name on something for HBO. The network has just optioned a 1950s-set drama, executive produced by del Toro and novelist Sara Gran, telling the true story of Frances Glessner Lee, a millionaire heiress who became a pioneer of modern forensics in her fifties by creating elaborately detailed dollhouse dioramas of crime scenes ...

On Tuesday, HBO made two announcements in the realm of acquisitions. The network said it would be producing "True Detective," a crime series based on the hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana starring Matthew McConnaughey and Woody Harrelson. It also confirmed reports it was passing on the pilot for Jonathan Franzen and Noah Baumbach's adaptation of Franzen's novel "The Corrections," which starred Ewan McGregor and Maggie Gyllenhaal and was being produced by Scott Rudin.
It's tempting to interpret the twin announcements as evidence of HBO's broader plans. A sign, perhaps, that the smash success of its two highest-performing shows, "True Blood" and "Game of Thrones," has convinced the network that the path to success is the lurid, fantastical one favored by hormonal young men.
Time will tell. But for now, there's no reason to ring the alarm bells, cancel your subscriptions and sign up for Showtime in anticipation...

Michael Chabon's "The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" could be coming to a screen near you.
According to Collider, director Stephen Daldry wants to turn the novel into a miniseries for HBO.
"I would love to do something for TV," he said. "I wanna do Kavalier & Clay on HBO as an eight-parter. It'll be so much better as a series, honestly."
There's just one catch -- Daldry doesn't have the rights to the book. Paramount does -- though Daldry himself was signed on at one point to direct a film version, the project has continued to languish.
"I spent a year working on it with Michael Chabon, so we're pretty close," Daldry told Collider. "And the rights, good question. Will Paramount give them to me? I don't know. It'll be a really good one. It'd go great with 'Boardwalk Empire.'"

In what would likely be a marriage made not far from heaven, Julianne Moore is considering joining director Todd Haynes for Dope, an HBO miniseries based on the wonderful thriller by Sara Gran.
Dope is the story of Josephine Flannigan, a small-time crook and ex-junkie who agrees to find a rich couple's runaway daughter. Joe finds herself drawn into a mystery whose sordid stakes soon become higher than she'd thought possible when she first took the job. Set in 1950 New York, Dope is an evocative slice of pulp fiction, colored by the era's jazzy ambiance and filled with noir's distinctive hard-boiled language.
Teaming with HBO for a period piece has been a rewarding choice for Haynes in the past. His recent remake of Mildred Pierce for HBO received 21 Emmy nominations, so shooting Dope seems like a no-brainer — especially were it to feature Julianne Moore, who previously ventured with Haynes into...

Julianne Moore will be playing Sarah Palin in HBO's adaptation of Game Change, based on the Mark Halperin and John Heilemann book that details the 2008 Us presidential election. Deadline is reporting that Moore could be extending her time at HBO as it appears that a new Todd Haynes project could land Moore as the lead.
The project in question is Dope; a novel written by Sara Gran that tells the story of Josephine "Joe" Flannigan, a heroin addict who decides to get clean and turns to private eye work to get by. Set in 1950s New York the streets are full of dope (as the title of the novel suggests) making this decision to work in a business surrounded by drugs all the more precarious.

One of the best films of the past year was Todd Haynes' new version of Mildred Pierce for HBO. It's actually a mini-series, but what the hell: the boundaries between film and TV are dropping like the Berlin Wall, so let's call Mildred Pierce a movie. It's a great one that continues Haynes' unblemished run of ambitious, interesting films. (Even when I'm not an unabashed fan of one of his films, as is the case with Velvet Goldmine, I can't deny that the film is worth watching.) And now Todd Haynes is getting set to make another film for HBO: an adaptation of Sara Gran's novel Dope. Circling the lead role is Julianne Moore. If this works out it'll be the fourth project for the pair, who have previously worked together on Safe, Far From Heaven and I'm Not There. Deadline [1] has the news, saying that Mildred Pierce...
