YouTube‘s first video is more than 18 years old, but it recently received an update that brought it in line with contemporary digital content trends. Jawed Karim, the YouTube Co-Founder who turned a herd of elephants into a piece of history, uploaded a new thumbnail for “me at the zoo” earlier this year.
In 2005, Karim kicked off the YouTube era with a 17-second clip set at the San Diego Zoo. Recently, some viewers who searched for “me at the zoo” received a surprise: A new thumbnail that shows Karim with glowing eyes and a herd of elephants to his right. It’s a change that seems at least partially inspired by MrBeast, who has ushered in a new era of thumbnail design by pairing funny faces with eye-grabbing details.

TikTok has introduced a new deck of cards, but you can’t use it to play Go Fish or Solitaire. It’s a pack of Creative Cards that offer video ideas for business owners who want to capture viewers during the holiday season.
As seen in the image above, TikTok is advertising its Creative Cards as “365 examples, tips, and tricks” — a year’s worth of ideas. That line is slightly misleading, since the deck actually includes “more than 100 digital cards” spread across five categories. There are color-coded idea groups related to community, edutainment, creator tools, trends, and storytelling. Creative Card users can focus on one specific category or draw a random suggestion from the deck.

Streaming today is a free-for-all, with major companies jockeying for position as they try to catch up with Netflix. In the early days of the online video revolution, though, one pioneer was not a solo act but instead a collective: Hulu. In their new book, Binge Times, which will be published Tuesday, Deadline business editor Dade Hayes and Reuters correspondent Dawn Chmielewski explore the current race but they also trace the origins and path of Hulu. The joint venture has many ties to today’s landscape and offers many lessons 15 years after its launch. As the existential threat of YouTube loomed, this was one case when rivals at the box office and in the Nielsen ratings tried to work together to defend their turf against Big Tech. Here is their story.

When YouTube arrived in 2005 and immediately upended traditional entertainment, media companies responded the best way they knew how: They tried to buy it.

“YouTube at 15” is our package of stories to celebrate the streaming site’s anniversary. It’s hard to imagine, but there really was a time before makeup tutorials, conspiracy explainers, on-demand music videos — really, viral videos at large. Since it’s become such a ubiquitous part of culture, we set out to look at how it’s changed our world. To kick things off, contributing editor Rob Sheffield investigated its surprising origins.
Everybody knows the story of Nipplegate. Janet Jackson. Justin Timberlake. The 2004 Super Bowl halftime show. A wardrobe malfunction.

YouTube founder Chad Hurley is readying his next act, after selling the video platform to Google for $1.65 billion in 2006.
Hurley, who co-founded YouTube with fellow then-PayPal employees Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, is building a new fan-centered mobile game startup for sports lovers dubbed GreenPark Sports. Techcrunch reports that the startup will launch in beta this spring, and will seek to serve as a reimagining of the fantasy sports space -- a way for fans to play along with live sports (both traditional sports and esports) and cheer for their favorite athletes.
“There is an absence of compelling, inclusive ways for large masses of sports fans to compete together,” Hurley told Techcrunch. “The idea of a ‘sports fan’ has evolved -- it is now more a social behavior than ever before. We’re looking at a much bigger, inclusive way for all fans of sports and esports teams to play.

Chad Hurley and Steven Shih Chen, two former PayPal colleagues who co-founded YouTube in 2005, were once so reviled in traditional-media circles that their company elicited a billion-dollar lawsuit by Viacom.
Today, they were named as recipients of Emmy Awards for Lifetime Achievement.
The entrepreneurs, who founded the company with Jawed Karim, will collect their statuettes at next month’s Nab Show. The annual confab has traditionally centered on broadcast television but increasingly showcases technology, drawing a crowd of attendees whose size is exceeded only by CES.
The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said Hurley and Chen will be honored at the 70th annual Technology & Engineering Emmys in Las Vegas. When Google bought the initially money-losing site in 2006, it was known for user-generated content and most Wall Street analysts and industry observers questioned its long-term profit potential. First things first: The shooting at YouTube’s headquarters speaks to a familiar problem that has nothing to do with the site of the disaster — America’s ubiquitous issues with gun control, and by extension, the ongoing inability to flag dangerous behavior before it reaches a breaking point. Nevertheless, the shooter’s rage reportedly stemmed from a distinct sense of entitlement that has emerged with the rise of YouTube, Facebook, and the many other platforms that depend on user-generated content to drive their businesses. The brutal truth in the age of democratized content is it never actually existed.
In November 2005, nine months after YouTube launched and changed online video forever, co-founder Chad Hurley positioned the platform as a new form of television for the internet age. “We’re the ultimate reality TV, giving you a glimpse into other people’s lives,” he told USA Today. “People have a lot of different experiences out there,...

In November 2005, shortly after its founding that February, then-nascent YouTube landed its first ever funding round: $3.5 million from the Menlo Park, Calif.-based venture capital firm Sequoia Capital. And in order to raise this capital, Attach -- a startup that enables users to share documents online -- has uncovered the original pitch deck that YouTube’s founders utilized to woo potential investors.
The 10-slide deck (below) lays out the reasons that former PayPal execs Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim founded YouTube. It describes how they sought to fill a white space by converting and serving videos that had been heretofore too large to host and share. “We are already moving eight terabytes of data per day through the YouTube community -- the equivalent of moving one Blockbuster store a day over the Internet,” Hurley stated rather presciently in a press release at the time.

A legal feud Kim Kardashian and Kanye West launched against one of the co-founders of YouTube has been settled. Chad Hurley, who in 2013 was accused of unlawfully filming KimYe’s engagement and uploading it to video site MixBit, has agreed to pay the power couple $440,000, according to TMZ.
Hurley, who co-founded YouTube in 2005 with Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, managed to snag an invite to KimYe’s 2013 engagement ceremony, which took place at At&T Park in San Francisco. At the time, he was looking to drum up support for MixBit, a Vine-like online video service he and Chen had launched earlier that year. From his seat, Hurley shot footage of the ceremony and uploaded it to MixBit, where it quickly amassed several hundred thousand views.
The video’s existence did not sit well with the happy couple, who alleged Hurley had broken a confidentiality agreement he had previously signed.

When Jawed Karim, a Bangladeshi-German Internet entrepreneur, uploaded an 18-second video called “Me at the Zoo” to his new site called YouTube in April of 2005, he had no idea he was about to make history. A fresh-faced 25-year-old Karim can be seen talking to the camera about how elephants “have really, really, really long, um, trunks.” As the company celebrates its 10-year anniversary, that elephant video has been viewed more than 22 million times. Karim — and fellow YouTube founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen — quickly proved just how remarkable their little idea was: the video streaming site, acquired by Google in 2006 for $1.65 billion,...

Let’s look at the bright side!
Some rituals help keep us focused throughout the year. This marks the 4th time I have looked back at all the good things that occurred in the film biz and listed them out for all of us. Tracking them through year, keeps me from abandoning hope. Sometimes they may just be the silver lining in the storm cloud, but nonetheless they keep me going, keep me convinced that in fact we truly are: building it better together. I hope they do something close to that for you. It’s been a good year, and I have thirty two morsels to tempt you with. And of course the year’s not through yet, so perhaps you have some to add to this too.
If you’ve encountered elements of this list earlier on my postings in Film Comment and on Keyframe, pay careful attention...

Rather than lounging on a private beach, renowned tech innovators Chris DeWolfe and Chad Hurley shared TheGrill stage at TheWrap‘s fifth annual Media Leadership Conference on Tuesday at the Montage in Beverly Hills. MySpace co-founder DeWolfe explained that a partnership between his site and YouTube, co-founded by Hurley, led to a spike in their initial success. “MySpace was all about self expression,” DeWolfe told moderator Jon Erlichman. “YouTube came along and they made this super easy video platform that actually worked. And as people would put videos on MySpace, people would click back to YouTube.” See photos: The Scene at TheGrill 2014: TheWrap's Media.

Two of the UK's most prominent multi-channel networks (MCNs) have come together in a multi-million dollar deal. Rightster, which operates a YouTube network consisting of more than 800 channels, has acquired Base79, whose partners include more than 300 brands. As reported by The Guardian, the deal is worth a base price of £25 million, which equals close to $42.7 million. If Base79 hits certain performance incentives within one year, the price tag will double to £50 million (~$85.4 million). In order to raise money for this acquisition, Rightster--which is a publicly traded company--has brought some new shareholders on board. That group of new investors includes Chad Hurley, the YouTube co-founder, who recently parted ways with longtime business partner Steve Chen. Both Rightster and Base79 specialize in rights management, and they both manage the YouTube channels of top international brands. Rightster recently bolstered its network through a partnership with Scripps, while Base79 is allied with The Jim...

The duo that formed two-thirds of YouTube's founding team have decided to split up. Steve Chen and Chad Hurley, who co-founded Avos Systems four years after selling YouTube to Google, are going their separate ways, with Chen leaving the company to join the Google Ventures team. Hurley and Chen have worked together for the past 15 years. They met while both working at PayPal before creating YouTube in 2005 (alongside third co-founder Jawed Karim). At Avos, Hurley and Chen worked on a number of different projects until February 2014, when Avos laid off most of its employees in order to focus entirely on MixBit, the video capture app founded by Hurley and Chen in August 2013. According to TechCrunch, Chen is leaving Avos in order to avoid "getting in the way of MixBit and the team." MixBit was Hurley's baby all along, so Chen has decided to go pursue other opportunities with the Google Ventures team.

It may be April Fools Day, but this story is no joke: Homestar Runner is back. The humor/animation website has released its first new video since December 2010. Mike and Matt Chapman's creation was one of the first great web series, scoring millions of views back when YouTube was nothing more than a gleam in Chad Hurley's eye. Fans fell in love with the dim-witted-but-loveable Homestar Runner, the nefarious Strong Bad, and the rest of the characters in Homestar's colorful, goofy world. Homestar Runner has maintained a strong fan base since its last update, with viewers reliving their favorite 'toons and Strong Bad E-mails through the site's old video portal (It also has an established YouTube presence.) Despite continued adoration, it seemed as if Homestar would never run again. That changed on April 1st, when visitors to the Homestar Runner website were greeted by the titular character. They...

According to multiple sources, YouTube has a new boss. As first reported by The Information, Google Svp of Advertising Susan Wojcicki will replace Salar Kamangar as the head of YouTube. Wojcicki has been with Google since 1998, and was the 16th employee hired by the tech giant. Her apparently imminent appointment to YouTube's top spot confirms frequent rumors that Kamangar (himself the ninth Google employee) plans to step down from his position. Kamangar previously became the second YouTube CEO in 2010 when he replaced the site's founder, Chad Hurley, and he is expected to remain at Google in a new position once he leaves YouTube Upon arriving at her new position, Wojcicki will attempt to use her experience in Google's ad department to solve YouTube's fundamental problem: How can the site stem the tide of dwindling CPMs, which at their current rates make it difficult for creators to make money on YouTube?...

In a predictable turn of events, Chad Hurley, Youtube co-founder, and the man responsible for leaking footage of Kanye West's proposal to Kim Kardashian, fought back against a lawsuit the couple filed against him.
According to Kim and Kanye, Hurley was not even invited to the party, and that he shared "Images he knew were the exclusive property rights of someone else."
However, Hurley insisted that he was never told he was prohibited from filming the proposal, or distributing it. However, he also said that he was asked to sign a waiver afterward, stating that the family could use his image in a TV special.
Hurley claimed he signed the document without reading it, and after being photographed holding it, he argued that it should have been invalid, as he claimed to be misled about its purpose.
