Christopher Nolan pretty much ended his involvement with the Batman franchise with last summer’s release of The Dark Knight Rises, but that hasn’t stopped some industrious fans trying to continue the story of Nolan’s Gotham City in a new film. Director Brett Register has crafted his own continuation of the series with The Dark Knight Legacy – a seven-minute short film that he hopes will be the first installment in a much larger series. In it, Batman is gone – presumed dead – and John Blake has taken up the mantle of Gotham protector as Nightwing. When a new villain named the Red Hood slaughters Gotham’s gang bosses (including the Penguin), it’s up to Nightwing to figure out why and stop Gotham’s various crime factions from...

Here's a cool Batman fan film that is supposed to be set in Christopher Nolan's universe. The film is called The Dark Knight Legacy, and it's set one year after the Dark Knight Rises ends. It follows John Blake, a.k.a. Robin, and his "heroic journey to protect the symbol of Batman from the lethal, relentless attacks of a masked vigilante known only as the Red Hood." The short was directed by Brett Register, and it's done really well.
The plan is to turn this into a web-series, so this would be considered the first episode. There's an Indie GoGo page that was set up to try to get the funding to continue their story. Watch the short for yourself, and if you like it, let the filmmakers know!

(Cbr) Devotees of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy — particularly those who hoped a follow-up might center on Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s John Blake — may find a lot to enjoy in "The Dark Knight Legacy", a seven-minute fan film that debuted this morning on Machinima. Directed by Brett Register from a script by Woody Tondorf and Chris Landa, the short picks up a year after the events of The Dark Knight Rises, as Blake (as Nightwing) tries to “protect the symbol of Batman from the lethal, relentless attacks of a masked vigilante known only as the Red Hood.” (Fan-favorite character Stephanie Brown also...

So what happens after Batman either blows up or retires with Catwoman (depending on your interpretation of Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises”)? Either way, Batman is no longer around, so who is left to protect Gotham City? Director Brett Register got together to make “The Dark Knight Legacy” that explores that question, and I have to say, unlike a lot of comic book-inspired fan film, this one looks pretty darn snazzy. I really like the gunplay, very gritty stuff. I have on idea who the old man is supposed to be, though. Kinda old to be crimelordin’, but maybe that’s just me being ageist. Dark Knight Legacy is a fan film set one year after the Dark Knight Rises, following “Robin” John Blake’s heroic journey to protect the symbol of Batman from the lethal, relentless attacks of a masked vigilante known only as the Red Hood.

When you’re a video game developer and one of your titles has attracted such a massive fan base that its latest iteration drew over 10 million downloads within three days after its launch, it makes sense for you to leverage that popularity and expand that title into things other than video games. That’s why Rovio created a fuzzy line of Angry Birds plush toys and other branded, kid-friendly accoutrements, is developing a feature-length Angry Birds film with the help of former Marvel Entertainment exec David Maisel, and just recently announced plans to create a 52-episode, weekly, animated series based on the strategy puzzle game featuring some ominous pigs and a variety of birds who can’t fly without slingshot propulsion. Rovio Head of Animation, Nick Dorra told attendees at Miptv in Cannes earlier this month about the company’s intent to expand upon its wildly popular in-game and special...

Ask A Ninja co-creator Kent Nichols spoke this past Monday at the monthly TransmediaLA event. He shared his knowledge about cultivating a core audience of true fans as well as changing modes of distribution by drawing on his knowledge gained from both creating a hit web show and working for Partner Outreach at Blip.tv. Consistency. A key piece of advice that Kent stressed over the course of the evening was that in order to become a success and grow a large audience there is a need for a consistent and constant flow of content. “If you are not producing at least 20 episodes of your narrative show that is probably not going to be enough. You need a certain mass of content to find that audience, and that needs to be put out there,” Kent said. “And that is just narrative content … you need bonus content, reward content that will...

A cocktail party so crazy you have to sign a waiver just to get in? I was intrigued. Intrigued enough to hop on the freeway a few miles up to a dark corner of North Hollywood to find the undisclosed home base of the web’s latest live-streaming reality show. Walking up to the three-story loft building it became clear this wasn’t going to be my run-of-the-mill Saturday night drinks at a friend’s place. Before entering the ControlTV loft, I’m hustled into a back room filled with producers and burly Pa types ushering me through a waiver and some ground rules. “Try to keep this PG-13,” said one of the younger producers on duty that night. “Just basically don’t drop the f-bomb too much.” She mentions the 30-second delay on the live stream they’ve set up just in case we get out of hand. And...

Unskippable is Mystery Science Theater 3000 for the Xbox generation. In each installment of this weekly web series, the comedy crew at Loading Ready Run riff on bad video game cinematics as animated action sequences unfold on screen. Just like MST300 doesn't only appeal to B movie buffs, Unskippable's allure transcends the gamer crowd. You don't have have to own a PS3 to be entertained by people making fun of visually engaging video game vignettes with poorly constructed storylines. Since it's debut in January 2009, Unskippable has been one of the most successful web series for the online gaming destination, The Escapist. Russ Pitts, Editor-in-Chief at The Escapist, told me over e-mail the success of the series led to the launch of another Loading Ready Run program with The Escpaist, Daily Drop. The series also helped the crew at Loading Ready Run transition from working "part-time jobs and making videos on...

When we look back years from now, Ask A Ninja will no doubt be part of that “greatest generation” of web shows—one of the early pioneering YouTube channels that created something so bizarre, delightfully interactive and inherently original that it stuck out of the onslaught of would-be video stars becoming a (digital) household name in the process. Kent Nichols and Doug Sarine are the creative duo behind the series, which has charted the ever-changing waters of online video to carve out a not-so-shabby business for themselves that bring in revenue not only from ad revenues on their videos, but merchandising, touring and even a book and an iPhone game. On October 4—just a month before the show’s five year anniversary— the Ninja is returning with new episodes five times a week. That by the way, is no easy feat, and Nichols and Sarine are veteran enough not to...

On the heaviest day of Comic-Con, one might think that having a major off-site event, to be held in the midst of some heavy hitting panels, might not be the strongest plan ever conceived. Showing up early to the event at the Bristol Hotel, I watched as some of the finishing touches were applied to the set-up. This was not the last-minute, throw-something-together-in-four-days event from this past April. Nor was it the end-all, be-all of panels. This was simply the next logical step for the web series industry, in a long road to having an entire section of the convention marked out for us. Run by Jenni Powell, Taryn O'Neill and Stephanie Thorpe, Celebrate the Web 2 came together with a different tone from the previous outing. Where the original event did so out of a need to heal some wounds, this time around the tone was stronger: “We’re here to stay,...

Tuesday marked the launch of indie drama Alpha Planet, a science fiction web series taking place on a post-apocalyptic earth 250 years in the future. With the entire human civilization living on a refugee ship for 200 years, supplies are running short. Four explorers (Michael Sweeney, Don Jeanes, Jd Mendonca, and Jen Sweeney) are sent back to Earth in search for signs of new life. The series logline, “They know the risks, but not the truth,” suggests a high-stakes conspiracy that involves the fate of humanity itself. Executive produced by Mike Darling, head of Rena’sance Robot, an independent production company that produces low-budget short films, sketches and web series, Alpha Planet looks like a cross between Brett Register’s The Crew and After Judgment, with a dash of Battlestar Galactica. The smart ones did. If you are serious about creating online entertainment there is absolutely no reason that attending SXSW Interactive (SXSWi) shouldn't be on your must-go list. The five day conference, which just wrapped up Tuesday night drew 12,000 of social media and web junkies for a non-stop, bleary-eyed bender of business cards, panels, free BBQ and new connections. It was like camp for internet people. And that's my point. If you're making any kind entertainment on the web, you are internet people. Meeting other internet people is part of your job. The apps and tools that are emerging out of the developers at SXSW matter to your web series. Entertainment on the internet spent the past 5 years learning how to go from crawling to standing up and making its first wobbly steps. Now it's 2010 and mainstream eyes are gooing over this clever toddler of a medium. The really interesting...

If there was any ever doubt that a web series—without any moonlighting Hollywood celebrities or TV network backing—could galvanize throngs of faithful fans into a live rock concert adoration, well, it ended last night at SXSW. Before a sold out crowd of over 2,200 at Stubbs BBQ one of Austin's legendary outdoor concert stages, Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht took a page out of the rock star playbook at the live Diggnation taping Saturday night. The spiked hair and fire breathing magic skills of Scam School's Brian Brushwood primed the crowd, in an opening act that probably could have its own Vegas offshoot some day. Then there was the #OMGConan hoax, an organized prank led by Rev3 co-founder David Prager that generated 426 tweets from the audience blasting out that Conan O'Brien is joining Revision3. This was of course full-circle to the web network's credulous offer back in January for...

After their pilot episode snagged the Grand Prize at the 2009 Escapist Film Festival, creator Brett Register and his producing team of Rick Rey and Paula Rhodes knew they were on to something. At that point the show was called Dorian's Quest, but after a name change to A Good Knight's Quest, the team set out to shoot a 24-episode gamer comedy web series that would run on The Escapist Magazine's site in weekly installments. "I'm a huge fan of the Escapist, I have been for years, ever since I was in college," said Register. "I always wanted to do an 80's style show, like my own Masters of the Universe web series—the bad movie not the cartoon TV show." To launch the series, the team hosted a well-attended La premiere at the Capitol City Hollywood on Monday night. When a video game princess crosses over into the real world,...

The nominees for the 2010 Streamys were announced today. The Streamys celebrate online television programming and this year they have a fantastic line up of nominees. Last year was the Streamys debut year and the winners included high profile shows such as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the exceptional Battlestar Galactica web series The Face of the Enemy.
This year there is even more competition with some really interesting content now being released on the web rather than through more traditional media routes. Two of my favourites from this year’s nominee list are the excellent Interview Project which is presented by davidlynch.com and the slightly flawed but thoroughly enjoyable Angel of Death, created by Ed Brubaker and starring Zoe Bell, which also received a DVD release last year.
The awards ceremony takes place on April 11th 2010 and the full list of nominees is listed below with handy links...

We knew we hadn't seen the last of the engine room on the Us Azureas when things left in a black hole cliffhanger this past spring. Sci-fi comedy web series The Crew is coming back for a second season next week after singing an exclusive deal with online video site Babelgum. For creator Brett Register, who had been using the hiatus from the show to roll out a number of short experimental web series like Craig and the Werewolf, he said he is excited to be able to pay his talent and crew this time around. "We were indeed able to pay everyone who worked on the show this season, which was amazing as the tagline when producing season one was, 'don't worry about money, we'll all get paid in season two,'" quipped Register. "Who knew that'd turn out to be true!" While it's not exactly TV-level money going around,...

If there’s one thing to be said about Craig & the Werewolf, it’s that it doesn’t beat around the bush with its premise. Three seconds into the first episode, we see Craig’s roommate gnawing on a bloody, severed hand. Five seconds later, Craig enters the apartment, freaks out, and demands to know what’s going on. Six seconds after that, we get the quasi-apologetic answer: “Sorry, I totally forgot to tell you! I’m a werewolf.” As with many other web series out there (Real Life with Married People, for instance), Absolute Disaster’s Craig & the Werewolf relies upon brevity of content to create a tight, fluff-free product. However, again as with many other web series out there, this show is also frequently a victim of its own attempts at streamlining. Here’s what makes Craig & the Werewolf fun to watch: it takes the classic “frustrating roommate” scenario and puts a bizarre,...

This wasn't initially intended as a Q&A interview, as we don't usually do that about a web series that hasn't even been fully shot yet and doesn't even have any major distribution lined up. But sometimes you have to break the rules to get to the good stuff. Zack Finfrock makes a great case study of an indie web series creator starting where a whole host of other would-be web stars are too—with an idea, a teaser trailer, limited resources, oh and some unusually talented friends. Finfrock's series, Emerson Wild, centers around a young man (Emerson) who's taken it upon himself to hunt monsters, trudging his way up the ranks of the monster hunting community. We've seen similar stabs at this casual, everyman play on superhero bureaucracy, most recently with Captain Alpha Male and The Junior League of Superheroes. As of now only a (long) trailer is out,...

For web series creator Brett Register and his newly formed creative team Absolute Disaster, the web is their playground. A mix of actors, writers and talented cinematographer, the 5-person outfit has been busy this summer, conjuring up one bizarre comedy after another. It's a formidable crew (no pun intended) that includes Register, The Crew's Craig Frank, Tim Riese as Dp, and Prom Queen stars Katy Stoll and Haley Mancini. Freed from the self-inflicted pressures of having to launch the pitch-perfect PR strategy, or secure a brand name sponsorship, the Absolute Disaster crew are just having fun. "We are really trying to play with experimenting on every level—length, releasing schedule, format," said Register. Summer hiatus. To some people these two words mean kicking back, slowing down and catching up on long lost sleep. To others, it means it's time to get busy.
