Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament took a hiatus during the pandemic as movie theaters closed for the majority of 2020-2021 and theatrical day-and-date titles on both the big screen and studios’ respective streaming platforms became more prevalent. Coming back from that brink, the studios have largely returned to their theatrical release models and the downstream monies they can bring. Not to mention their power in launching IPs around the world with big global marketing campaigns. When it comes to evaluating the financial performance of top movies, it isn’t about what a film grosses at the box office. The true tale is told when production budgets, P&a, talent participations and other costs collide with box office grosses, and ancillary revenues from VOD to DVD and TV. To get close to that mysterious end of the equation, Deadline is repeating our Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament for 2022, using data culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

We have a very eclectic mix of Blu-rays for you in this latest Blu-ray column. In fact, I can't remember a time when I've rounded up such an odd assortment of films. Not only do we have the new 4K release of "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," but we also have the animated "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," the beautiful drama "The Remains of the Day," and Dario Argento's "Phenomena" just to cap things off. Like I said: eclectic.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre 4K
Often copied, never duplicated, there will never be anything like "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" again. Even after all these years, Tobe Hooper's tale of some travelers who run afoul of a cannibal family is terrifying. Why? Because it feels like something we shouldn't be seeing. The rough, raw style makes the entire movie feel like a documentary; like someone created a...

This weekend, it’s estimated Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will surpass Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and Uncharted to become the No. 9 biggest studio release of 2022 worldwide.
The Antonio Banderas/Salma Hayek sequel went out early overseas and built with great word of mouth and soft drops.

This story about “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” first appeared in the Awards Preview issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
DreamWorks Animation’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” is, ostensibly, part of the “Shrek” universe. It’s a sequel to 2011’s “Puss in Boots,” which itself was a spin-off of a character who was first introduced in “Shrek 2” and subsequently appeared in “Shrek the Third” and “Shrek Forever After.” And as such, there’s a certain vibe you expect from the film.
But the movie handily discards that expectation early on, when Puss (voiced once again by Antonio Banderas) finds himself in a bar. He’s just learned that of his nine lives, he’s used all but one, and so he’s facing down his own mortality. The mood is desperate, funereal. And then a giant evil wolf (Wagner Moura), a bounty hunter later revealed to be the personification of Death,...

Welcome to one of the last “Best Movies of 2022” lists. And while other lists try to give you a complete picture in 10 movies, or maybe one specific genre, we here at Heat Vision try to tackle the best of the genres we love, from comic book adaptations to horror to fantasy. And we love the animation medium. The only Tár you’ll find around here is talk of how sTar Wars series Andor is so smart and interesting, and the only Banshees of Inisherin we want to see is X-Men hero Sean Cassidy flying to save Jenny the donkey.
All kidding aside, 2022 was a pretty good movie year for most of the genres we love. The big one, however, the comic book movie space, hit a rough patch. At times, seeing them became a chore and we sincerely hope that changes next year.

There’s a lot of talk about how 2022 was a ‘flop’ year for film. The quality of the movies was constantly called into question without considering that many of these films were shot during the height of the pandemic where money, space, and resources were limited. Regardless of what anyone thinks, this year produced some phenomenal cinema, with even better performances. My best of 2022 list is meant to highlight some of the titles that left an impression on me. The choices range across genres from action, drama, documentary, and animation.

Coming into a franchise as storied as the Shrek series, director Joel Crawford was thrilled at the opportunity to show a new side of the iconic Puss in Boots. A sequel to the 2011 Puss in Boots film, DreamWorks Animation’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish takes place after Shrek Forever After, when Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) is accidentally killed by a bell and discovers he is down to his ninth, and final, life. After a brush with a mysterious wolf who is determined to take his last life, Puss decides to live the rest of his life in hiding. However, he soon learns about a wishing star that could help them get his lives back. Crawford wanted to take the story of Puss in Boots into a darker direction than the other films in the Shrek franchise, using inspiration from Grimm’s Fairy Tales.

Chicago – The Shrek franchise, which had been showing signs of creative exhaustion dating all the way back to “Shrek The Third,” gets an unexpected dose of new life with this belated – and better than it has any right to be – sequel “Puss In Boots: The Last Wish,” focusing on the swashbuckling feline (voice of Antonio Banderas).

The cat is basically Zorro with fur, and it’s perfectly suited to Banderas’ Latin purr. This film finds the adventurer unexpectedly down to his last life after wasting eight of his nine lives on exploits both heroic, and stupid. Plot: Puss in Boots is back, and this time he is nearly out of his nine lives. Thankfully he may have an answer. With the legend of a lost star that can grant a single wish, he and his pals seek out this magical item in hopes to prolong his kitty lives.
Review: The cat is back. Over a decade after the first cat-centric adventure, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish makes a swashbuckling return to the big screen. Antonio Banderas is back as Puss, along with his on-and-off romantic interest, Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek). This time, the cast includes a good-hearted undercover puppy played by by the scene-stealer Harvey Guillén. Florence Pugh as Goldilocks, and her three bears are all terrific. Made a decade after 2011’s Oscar-nominated Puss in Boots, the sequel that debuts Dec. 21 takes a darker turn as the eponymous feline, voiced by Antonio Banderas, is forced to confront his mortality. “He’s burned through eight of his nine lives, and he’s on his last,” director Joel Crawford says, explaining that while a cat’s nine lives make for a fun premise, the filmmakers used it to talk about a more serious subject. “You have one life, how are you going to live it? That’s such a powerful theme that’s relevant for everybody.”
He adds that Dreamworks Animation’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish aims to deliver “what everyone was expecting: the swashbuckling fun of a Puss in Boots, but also expand the world, even in the look.” The story begins with a song and playful action sequence.

Now, what would make this most “magical time of the year” more magical? How about a return visit from several of our favorite fairy tale friends? Oh, but hold up, this new release isn’t another animated romp with those two green lovebirds and their donkey Bff. But you’re close as its focus is another pal of theirs. It’s not his first solo outing, rather it’s a long-awaited (eleven years) follow-up. And talk about magic, it’s the big goal of him and all the other characters in Puss In Boots: The Last Wish. En Garde, kitty-cat…

Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Puss In Boots: The Last Wish has secured a China release date on December 23, two days after its North American bow. Apart from Avatar: The Way of Water, this currently appears to be the only other Hollywood title dated through the end of the year in the Prc.

Domestic is dated for December 21 with other key overseas markets including Spain, Germany, Mexico, Australia, Korea and Brazil on deck throughout the Christmas and New Year holidays.
The 2011 original spin-off grossed 555M globally (unadjusted). It did not release in China. While the market has been depressed this year, Universal titles have seen fairly steady influx including Jurassic World Dominion, Minions: The Rise of Gru and The Bad Guys.

In the wake of Illumination’s Nintendo movie Mario moving off of Wednesday, Dec. 21, Dreamworks Animation’s sequel Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will now take over that slot, moving back from its Sept. 23 release date.
Universal brought families back during the pandemic this past Christmas with Illumination’s Sing 2 which made 162.6M, and played wide into early April; a great hold for a family movie.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is the sequel to the 2011 Shrek spinoff Puss in Boots which made 149.2M domestic, close to 555M WW.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish moves in the wake of 20th Century Studios’ Avatar 2 and Shazam! Fury of the Gods on Dec. 16, and is also opening on the same day as Sony’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody. On Christmas Day, Paramount as Damien Chazelle’s Babylon while Sony has Tom Hanks’ A Man Called Otto.
