Filmmaker Theo Love is directing “Treasure Hunters,” a documentary feature based on the New York Magazine article “The Great 21st-Century Treasure Hunt.”
Netflix will distribute the documentary, with Vox Media Studios and Nomadica Films set to produce.
Benjamin Wallace wrote the article that inspired the non-fiction film, which was published in November of 2020. The lengthy read captures an epic 10-year “sometimes maddening, occasionally deadly, brainscrambling” search for gold in the Rockies.
The documentary’s official logline reads: “‘Treasure Hunters’ follows the true story of Forrest Fenn, an art collector, who buried a $2 million treasure in 2010 filled with rare gold coins in an unknown location with 24 cryptic verses offering the only hint to its whereabouts. More than 400,000 searched for it, including five people who died. Finally, this past June, a former journalist named Jack Stuef came forward claiming to have found it. So why does no one believe him? Is the treasure still out there somewhere?...

That was one lightweight episode.
The message of NCIS Season 18 Episode 3 was that "Family is most important."
Ok. That's definitely appropriate during this Covid era, which has separated too many families.
Still, there wasn't a whole lot there.
It was a good thing that Fornell kept popping up about once a segment.
It was purely coincidence that this episode aired only two days after the name of the man who located Forrest Fenn's million-dollar buried treasure was revealed.
But it did highlight how treasure-hunting, long the stuff of children's adventure tales, remains vital in this day of electronic entertainment.
It's the get-rich-quick scheme that has transcended the ages.
Having the victim be a Navy recruiter who was also a devoted treasure hunter was a well-thought-out way to get NCIS into that world, at least tangentially.
And a rather gruesome death it was too, by NCIS standards, a disemboweling on a fire escape.

Santa Fe author Forrest Fenn, known for his 2010 book Thrill of the Chase which inspired a popular treasure hunt in the Rocky Mountains, died on Monday. He was 90.
Fenn died of natural causes in his Santa Fe home.
The writer and former U.S. Air Force pilot rose to notoriety after a poem in his memoir The Thrill of the Chase hinted at the location of a hidden cache of about $2 million in jewels and gold. His poem not only inspired treasure hunters to embark on their treacherous quest for his treasure but encouraged them to document their own experiences on the hunt.
Earlier this year the popular hunt made headlines as a Colorado woman, whose husband died searching for Fenn’s secret treasure, claimed that the Santa Fe writer never hid anything. Despite the woman’s claims, Fenn announced that another hunter following his clues supposedly found the treasure. The author,...

Studio 8 has hired Jake Szymanski to direct an action comedy based on journalist Hudson Morgan’s misadventures in search of buried treasure in the Rocky Mountains.
In 2010, Forrest Fenn, an art dealer in New Mexico, announced he had buried a cache of gold and jewels in the Rocky Mountains — setting off a treasure hunt that attracted thousands. Last month, Fenn announced that a man who wished to remain anonymous had discovered the chest.
Morgan, a journalist turned comedy writer, will write the screenplay roughly based on his own experience in which a group of millennials set out after the treasure after their best friend disappears. That led to shouting matches, natural hazards, close calls with grizzlies, leaving the group with new appreciation for life, friendship and bear spray.
Studio 8’s Jeff Robinov, Guy Danella and John Graham will produce the film. The project is described as “The Goonies” meets “The Hangover.

The Ledge producer Michael Mailer has teamed with Hank Blumenthal to produce an inspired-by-true-events period drama, The Walk, with Daniel Adams attached to direct from a script he co-wrote with George Powell. The screenplay was originated by Powell, a former drug dealer whom Adams discovered while he was incarcerated. Upon his release, Powell turned to screenwriting and The Walk will mark his first produced script.
The story centers on Boston Irish cop Bill Coughlin as he is faced with his own suppressed racist attitude and fierce social pressure after being assigned to protect black high school students as they are bused into all-white South Boston High during the court-ordered forced integration of the Boston School System in 1974, which resulted in brutal violence and city-wide protests.
