Like every production company, Jumpcut wants to discover new talent. As a data-driven startup, it leans on machine-learning algorithms to analyze content on YouTube and Reddit — everything from production value to the emotional response of commenters — and spits out a list of prospective content creators.
Jumpstart founder Kartik Hosanagar, who holds down a day job as the John C. Hower Professor of Operations, Information and Decisions at the Wharton School, said the algorithm frequently strikes gold. It found YouTube shorts created by actor Anna Hopkins, who’s appeared in Freeform’s “Shadowhunters” and “The Expanse” but was unknown — and unrepresented — in the industry as a writer.
“We called her and she said, ‘How did you guys find me, did somebody from NBC send you?,'” Hosanagar recalled. “‘We said no, no, no. An algorithm found you.'”

Woody Harrelson is reteaming with director Oren Moverman to star in the fact-based WWII thriller “The Man With the Miraculous Hands,” which Moverman is writing and directing.
The film is a feature adaptation of a biography by Joseph Kessler about the private doctor of the Nazi officer Heinrich Himmler, “The Man with the Miraculous Hands: The Fantastic Story of Felix Kersten, Himmler’s Private Doctor.”
Jerico Films, a division of the Vendome Group production banner, is producing the film. The movie is a reunion of Harrelson and the Israeli-American writer/director Moverman, who previously worked together on “Rampart” and “The Messenger,” which earned Harrelson an Oscar nomination.
“The Man With the Miraculous Hands” depicts Kersten’s life as a physician whose therapies helped to relieve Himmler’s debilitating abdominal pain, thereby giving him extraordinary influence over one of the main architects of the Holocaust. With clever manipulations, and a flair...

While Hollywood and Wall Street have been bracing for more than two years for a slew of competing streaming services, a new survey has some revelations about the marketplace these platforms will soon enter.
Conducted in September by viewer tracking service TV Time and UTA Iq, the survey, “Beyond the Big Three,” says a considerable 70% of those asked feel there will be too many streamers to choose from.
The sentiment comes only a week after WarnerMedia held its roadshow for HBO Max, the pricey over-the-top service that will offer original series and films along with the storied Warner Bros. Entertainment content library. Come May 2020, HBO Max will join existing giants Netflix, Amazon and Hulu, as well as heavyweight upstarts Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus.
Less than half of consumers surveyed, or 42%, said they intended to add a new streaming service for household viewing. Only 20% said they would add two,...
