Whether through their heartbreaking backstories, unique abilities, or charismatic personalities not bound by “main-character tropes,” these are the side characters that have left a lasting impact on audiences and stepped out from under the shadow of their lead.

10 Shonen Anime Romances Where The Guy Falls First
Image
There is no shortage of romance anime dynamics in any genre. However, shonen romances have often shown relationships getting their start when the male protagonist has feelings first. While it doesn’t always happen this way, many male main characters begin their crushes before the female leads. This has remained a popular trope that continues to have its fans to this day.

The best shonen romances where the guy falls first typically feature underdog main characters who see their love interests as too out of their league. The male protagonists are shy initially but grow to have more confidence in the end. This trope is fairly prevalent in romance anime, but these shonen stories are among the best.

He is Goku's best friend and is typically depicted as a comic relief character, but he has played a crucial role in protecting Earth on numerous occasions. Krillin is a master martial artist, and he now can destroy planets with powerful Ki blasts. Krillin may not be strong enough to beat many of Dragon Ball's notable villains, but he can easily defeat villains from other anime series.

Most of these anime villains possess supernatural abilities, but Krillin's Ki can easily overpower these abilities. Many of these villains are human fighters, and Krillin can evade most of their attacks with his superhuman reflexes, and his superhuman strength would enable him to knock several of them out with just one or two punches.

10 Anime Characters Voiced by Kenpachi Zaraki’s English Va in Bleach
Image
Kenpachi Zaraki is one of the most popular characters in Bleach because he is a brutal warrior who loves fighting strong opponents. He is the Captain of Squad 11, making him one of the strongest Soul Reapers in Bleach. David Lodge voiced Kenpachi in the English dub from 2006 to 2012, and Patrick Seitz has been voicing him ever since. Over the course of their careers, both David and Patrick have provided voices for several notable anime characters.

Many of these characters, like Kenpachi, are strong fighters, but most of them possess significantly different personalities and motivations. Patrick has voiced more anime characters than David, but David has voiced a beloved character from an iconic anime, as well as a villainous marionette.

Hunter x Hunter Sparks Debate Following Its Recent Australian Ban
Image
Hunter x Hunter's new fighting game, Nen x Impact has been banned in Australia due to suggestions of sexual violence against minors according to a recent report. Though Hunter x Hunter is a believed series among anime fans, one of the series' main antagonists, Hisoka, remains a controversial aspect. It seems that controversy has now boiled over, with Hisoka's disquieting antics meaning that Bushiroad and Eighting's Hunter x Hunter: Nen x Impact won't receive classification in Australia, effectively banning the game.

In a report by Automaton Media, the Australian Classification board specifically said that it wouldn't classify the new game with its rating system due to "sexual violence against characters under the age of 18 by an adult male character." While the board doesn't clarify, anyone familiar with the series will know that the likely culprit is Hisoka. While this is obviously disappointing for Australian fans of Hunter x Hunter...

10 Classic Shojo Anime That Are Still Worth The Hype
Image
Audiences don't love classic shojo just because of the nostalgia factor. While that definitely plays into why some more notorious or madcap titles become cult classics, like Vampire Knight, there are many other shojo classics that still hold up to today. Newer anime audiences and viewers who only watched shonen anime could start these titles and enjoy everything they have to offer.

Classic shojo titles tell diverse stories, from enchanted, intergalactic magical girl journeys to contemporary coming-of-age stories about love and artistry. Some titles, like The Rose of Versailles, set the genre standards for historical anime. Others pushed at the boundaries of gender convention, and still have progressive storytelling merit today.

25 Sad Anime Series Guaranteed To Make You Cry
Image
Sad anime series tell some of the stories that stick with fans the longest, as few emotions are felt as intensely as sadness. It is easy to laugh at a brief joke or feel joy over a character's achievements and victories, but such feelings are often short-lived. On the other hand, bringing viewers to tears requires a genuine connection to be formed, as the characters need to feel real and relatable.

There are plenty of series that make their viewers cry on occasion. Especially when it comes to longer-running ones, certain moments are bound to be especially sad, such as One Piece's Going Merry's tragic ending. However, few shows go out of their way to attempt to build up a real connection with viewers, focusing on their emotions above all and leading to some of the greatest sad anime series.

Was Adult Swim's 'Uzumaki' Really a Failure?
Image
When the anime adaptation of Junji Ito's Uzumaki premiered its first episode on September 29th, 2024 on Adult Swim's Toonami, it was hailed by critics and fans alike as a triumph. The premiere, which faced numerous delays on its road to completion, received raves for its detailed animation, bringing Ito's disturbing manga imagery to life. Fans were happy to conclude that the series had broken the so-called Junji Ito curse, succeeding where other anime adaptations of his manga had failed.

But when episode two dropped, a curious thing happened. Fans began to notice a distinct difference in animation quality between the first two episodes, and took to social media to express their confusion and disappointment. Where the first episode had seemed lovingly and carefully crafted down to the finest detail, fans felt that episode two was cutting corners, with a stiffer, more obviously digital feel in contrast to the handmade vibe of the premiere.

The Most Overrated Anime of 2024, So Far
Image
The year 2024 has seen several major anime released, with these being adaptations of manga and light novels, sequel seasons and completely original works. Many of these have received fantastic reviews among fans and critics, with some being considered the best of the year. Of course, some of this positive reception isn't completely founded, resulting in a few of these works being praised a bit more than they deserve.

There are a plethora of overrated 2024 anime, with some of them being the biggest hits of the year. Some simply aren't as great as they're made out to be, while others are complete letdowns whose reception defies all logical. Worst of all, one season of an unexpectedly great series turned out to be a big disappointment, making its place in that show particularly surprising.

10 Anime with Endless Halloween Costume Ideas
Image
Halloween is coming up and now is the time to find inspiration for a costume and finalize online orders. Thanks to anime's ever-growing popularity, many retailers stock pre-fabricated Naruto and Demon Slayer costumes that are as easy as click-and-collect. Some people will get creative and make a low-effort costume or go all-out like Heidi Klum and invest in an over-the-top outfit. Luckily, anime provides endless references to draw from, especially for couple and group costumes, theme parties, or just showing off pop-culture literacy.

The easiest anime references are the iconic school uniforms, which are not only required attire at Japanese schools but are a symbol of youth and one's formative years. Sailor Moon, Dan Da Dan, and Neon Genesis Evangelion all feature fairly basic uniforms that can be made with plaid skirts, white button-downs, and a tie or bow. Other anime characters can be captured simply with a cool suit,...

10 Best Slice-of-Life Shojo Anime, Ranked
Image
Shojo manga and anime are marketed towards a young girl audience. Shojo stories tend to revolve around personal growth, friendship dynamics, and falling in love. Though shojo anime tends to have a certain set of tropes and themes, the stories are still quite varied.

Likewise, slice-of-life anime spans across many subgenres and demographics; it explores the daily lives of interesting characters who are often entering a new world or phase of life. Shojo combined with slice-of-life makes for a great story. Series like Ouran High School Host Club explore the school life and romances of elite students, and stories like My Happy Marriage tell the incremental story of a woman who enters an arranged marriage, slowly recovers from trauma, and falls in love for the first time.

‘Western Producers Are Trash’: One Piece Animator Henry Thurlow Points Out Why Uzumaki Anime’s Quality Could Have Dipped
Hiroaki Hirata, Kazuya Nakai, Akemi Okamura, Mayumi Tanaka, and Kappei Yamaguchi in One Piece (1999)
Animator Henry Thurlow who is popular for his work on One Piece, Boruto and other anime, recently put out a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) shedding light on what possibly could have gone wrong with the Uzumaki adaptation.

The anime has gone through an alarming downward spiral when it came to its animation quality, leaving everyone quite disheartened.

While Thurlow admitted that he was not fully aware of what happened behind the scenes of Uzumaki’s production, he lashed out at western producers for probably having ruined the show.

He pointed out that some producer from the anime, in a bid to just get done with production and release it, might have involved some subpar studio to work on the it.

“As for the Uzumaki production, at the end of the day it’s almost certainly *some* western producer’s fault. ‘This is taking too long so force...

A Complete Cast and Character Guide for Hunter x Hunter
Image
Quick Links Gon's Group Defines Hunter x Hunter Hunter x Hunter Features Some of the Best Anime Villains Hunter x Hunter's Supporting Cast Fleshes Out the World

Like many long-running shonen anime, Hunter x Hunter has an absolutely massive cast. These characters range from being world-famous, like Gon and Killua, to somewhat more obscure, like Chrollo and Meruem, to the extremely minor, like Tonpa and Zepile. One of the core themes of the series is about how everyone's journey matters, and so nearly every character, no matter how unimportant, receives some degree of development.

Because HxH has been adapted into two anime series with different casts, there are even more voice actors connected to the series than there are characters, and nearly every performer succeeds in perfectly bringing their character to life. Hunter x Hunter is among the most iconic shonen anime, and its success is largely owed to...

The Most Unrealistic Anime Romances
Image
Anime isn’t always about depicting real-life situations and dynamics — especially romances. Anime romantic stories are sometimes too farfetched and idealistic to work in real life. Although romance tales like Horimiya, Tamako Love Story, Wotakoi, Tomo-Chan is a Girl!, and more have somewhat relatable premises, many have themes that feel exaggerated. Romance anime — especially high school dramas and romcoms — are known to take it up a notch and portray characters and scenarios that may never work in real life.

One of the traits of classic romance anime was traditional idealism and outlandishness, but modern anime has swiftly shifted to portraying stories that are more or less relatable and connective. From timeless classics like Ouran High School Host Club to over-the-top harems, some anime romances are simply not meant for the real world.
