Simon Racioppa first got the idea for “The Boys Presents: Diabolical” while chatting with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who had helped to develop the Amazon Prime Video live-action series. “They wanted to make a show that exists in “The Boys” universe, but they wanted to make something really fast that could come out in time before season three and they had this idea of doing an animated anthology series,” he reveals to Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). When reaching out to people to try and get them to write episodes for the anthology, having someone like Rogen ended up being invaluable. “It kind of helps when you have Seth Rogen making these calls for you. We only had eight slots but when we made lists, we just started calling people up and saying we’ve heard you’re a fan of ‘The Boys.

Turning a comic book into a live-action TV series is not a revolutionary idea in the current TV landscape — but turning a comic book into a live-action TV series that is then itself turned into an animated series set in the same universe is not a pitch studio and network execs get every day.
That’s what “The Boys” executive producers Seth Rogen, Eric Kripke and Evan Goldberg set out to do when they came up with the idea for the very adult cartoon shorts “The Boys Presents: Diabolical,” while they were simultaneously working on the upcoming third season of the mothership Amazon Prime Video series and its recently ordered untitled superhero-college spinoff.
“We were deep in the pandemic and we were looking to get something from what we’re calling the Vcu on the air go before Season 3,” “The Boys” showrunner Eric Kripke told Variety, citing the show’s Vought Cinematic Universe.

“The Boys Presents: Diabolical” proudly gives heroes a bad name.
The bloody fun-size superhero anthology isn’t for the squeamish, with eight short stories inspired by The New York Times–bestselling comic “The Boys,” created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The was developed by executive producer and showrunner Eric Kripke for Prime Video’s live action series.
“From the wonderfully damaged minds” of writers Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen, Justin Roiland and Ben Bayouth, Garth Ennis, Awkwafina, Eliot Glazer and Ilana Glazer, Andy Samberg, Aisha Tyler, and Simon Racioppa come “The Boys”-centric stories — including an origin story for Homelander that even further parallels Marvel’s Captain America by way of a handsome transformation.
Homelander, insecure? Now it all makes sense.
All eight “Diabolical” episodes will premiere March 4 exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. Each episode runs between 12 and 14 minutes, featuring a unique animation style.

Seth Rogen pulls double duty in this bittersweet fish-out-of-water comedy based on an acclaimed short story by comic writer Simon Rich. It’s an entertaining, oddly touching picture that finds Rogen on top form, twice.
Opening in the fictional Polish shtetl of Schlupsk, An American Pickle centres on lowly, bearded ditch-digger Herschel Greenbaum (Rogen), who moves to America with his pregnant wife Sarah (Succession‘s Sarah Snook) after one too many attacks by Jew-hating Cossacks. Herschel gets a job as a rat-basher in a pickle factory, but accidentally falls into a vat of pickles, just as the factory is closed down.
100 years later, Herschel wakes up, the pickle brine having miraculously kept him alive. He is dismayed to discover that his only living relative is his great-grandson Ben Greenbaum...

There’s a charming weirdness at the core of An American Pickle, the latest Seth Rogen star vehicle. It’s a movie that sounds like it could be either amazing or terrible, depending on the execution. Luckily, Rogen and company give it a steady hand, as well as a singular identity, making the comedy a really enjoyable one. By leaning into the premise and its various possibilities, as opposed to getting bogged down in one specific aspect and solely going for laughs there, it’s a fuller meal, if you’ll pardon the expression. As the first HBO Max cinematic release, it’s a good get for the company. Out now, it’s quite entertaining. The film is a comedy, one with a high concept, to boot. 100 years ago, Hershel Greenbaum (Rogen) is a simple gravedigger, one whose dreams of luxury include getting to taste seltzer water. When he meets...

With Thursday’s debut of “House Hunters: Comedians on Couches,” Hgtv is officially in the business of making fun of itself. In the quarantine-tv show, hosts Dan Levy, Natasha Leggero, and a revolving door of their stand-up comedian friends watch-party a classic episode of “House Hunters” and then take turns taking the home buyers down a peg or two.
“We have been making fun of these shows for so long,” Levy, who has performed stage shows mocking random Zillow listings, told TheWrap.

Ciao, Broad City. After a brilliant and gut-busting run, Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson are heading into the final season of their groundbreaking Comedy Central show about two twentysomething BFFs living large in NYC, helping each other explore the worlds of pegging, Fomo and going to Whole Foods on drugs. Before it kicks off on January 24, the co-creators and stars singled out a few of their personal favorite episodes for Rolling Stone. Asked for five of their greatest hits, the broads chose eight. As Glazer explains, “I hope I lot...

Maya Erskine (co-creator/co-star of the upcoming Hulu series Pen15), Sarah Snook, Eliot Glazer, Kalen Allen (The Ellen DeGeneres Show), Molly Evensen, and Kevin O’Rourke (The Irishman) are set to appear alongside Seth Rogen in the yet-to-be-titled Pickled comedy which is set up at Sony Pictures. Brandon Trost, who was the director of photography for Neighbors and The Disaster Artist, is marking his feature directorial debut.
Simon Rich penned the screenplay which is based on his own story which was detailed in his novella from The New Yorker. Rogen will star Herschel Greenbaum, a struggling laborer, who immigrates to America in 1918 with dreams of building a better life for his beloved family. One day, while working at his factory job, he falls into a vat of pickles and is brined for 100 years.
The brine preserves him perfectly and when he emerges in present day Brooklyn, he finds that he hasn’t aged a day.

Perhaps you’re already aware, but the main pair of best friends on “Broad City” sure do run a lot. In announcing the release date for the start of Season 5 early next year, Comedy Central whipped up a montage of Abbi and Ilana jogging, sprinting, and otherwise hitching on the back of moving vehicles across New York over the course of the show’s first 40 episodes.
Even though it cuts off right before the greatest poultry kick in television history, it’s still a solid overview of the energy that’s run through what became a cornerstone show for the network. To help commemorate the occasion, Abbi Jacobson, Ilana Glazer, and assorted fan favorites from the show’s ensemble took to Instagram to help deliver the news that the show’s final season will be arriving in the new year on January 24.

“Broad City” will end after its fifth season next year, Comedy Central said Thursday.
The network also announced a first-look deal with the comedy’s creators, Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, both together and independently. The deal extends to Comedy Central’s parent company Viacom’s television networks. There are three projects currently in development under this deal: “Mall Town USA,” “Platinum Status,” and “Young Professionals.”
“‘Broad City’s Abbi and Ilana may appear to be aimless and full of hair-brained schemes, but Abbi and Ilana Irl have proven to be stellar creator/writer/performer/director/producers,” said Comedy Central’s president Kent Alterman. “Their supreme focus on telling new stories, in new worlds, with new talent is nearly scary.”

“‘Broad City’ has been our baby and first love for almost ten years, since we started as a web series. It’s been a phenomenal experience, and we’ve put ourselves into it completely,” said Glazer and Jacobson. “‘Broad City’s always had a spontaneous pace and feeling, and ending after season five honors that spirit. We are very excited to bring new voices and points of view to Comedy Central and continue our collaboration together in new ways.”
See Comedy Central’s description of the three new projects below.
Mall Town USA: Mall Town USA is an animated comedy that follows the afterschool misadventures of a 13-year-old girl navigating the complexities of life in the classic microcosm of American culture that is The Mall. Mall Town USA is written and created by Gabe Liedman (Broad City, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and executive produced by Jacobson and Glazer.

Platinum Status: Set in the hipster-heavy east side of Los Angeles, Platinum Status tells the story of professional back-up singer Noah (Eliot Glazer), a gay guy who’s always felt left out of the “community.” And after he’s dumped by his boyfriend of ten years, Noah rebounds in the least likely way: by hooking up with a girl. With help from his friends Kevin and Mimi and guidance from his kinda-sorta-girlfriend Alexa, Noah tries to evolve both in the bedroom and the recording studio. Eliot Glazer will write and executive produce and Ilana Glazer will also executive produce along with Principato Young’s Peter Principato and Brian Steinberg and Electric Avenue’s Will Arnett and Marc Forman.
Young Professionals: At age twenty-four, David Litt became one of the youngest White House speechwriters in history. Described as the “comic muse for the president,” Litt served as the lead writer for many of President Obama’s most memorable comedic moments, and his recent memoir, Thanks, Obama, is a New York Times best seller. Inspired by Litt’s coming-of-age in our nation’s capital, Young Professionals follows five housemates growing up – personally, politically, and professionally – in the hopelessly absurd world of Washington, D.C. Young Professionals is written by and executive produced by Litt, with Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer also serving as executive producers.

Comedy Central confirmed Broad City season 5 and an overall deal for its stars.
Broad City is going out on its own terms. Comedy Central confirmed Broad City season 5 will be the final season of the sitcom. Creators and stars Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson won’t be leaving the network for greener pastures, however. The comedy duo inked a first-look deal with Comedy Central’s parent company Viacom, meaning we could soon be seeing more projects from Glazer and Jacobson on Viacom-owned networks.
In a post-Jon Stewart world (relax he’s still alive) where Comedy Central has hemorrhaged talent, Broad City has been a saving grace for the network. The show has been a critical darling and a ratings success for most of its run and a star-making vehicle for Glazer and Jacobson.

One of Comedy Central’s signature comedy series, Broad City, will be coming to an end after its upcoming fifth season, set to air in early 2019.
Comedy Central is staying in business with Broad City creators, showrunners, directors and stars Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson who have signed a development deal with the network. Under the pact, Comedy Central will have a first look at all content created and/or developed for television by Glazer and Jacobson, both together and independently. The deal also extends across all of parent company Viacom’s television networks.
Glazer and Jacobson have three projects already in development at Comedy Central under the new pact — Mall Town USA, Platinum Status, and Young Professionals.
“Broad City’s Abbi and Ilana may appear to be aimless and full of hair-brained schemes, but Abbi and Ilana Irl have proven to be stellar creator/writer/performer/director/producers. Their...

Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson are packing up and moving on from “Broad City.” But first — yaaaassssss, queen, they still have one more season of the critically acclaimed Comedy Central series left. “Broad City” will be back in early 2019 for its fifth and final season, the network announced on Thursday.
But that’s not the end of Glazer’s and Jacobson’s relationship with Comedy Central. The channel has signed a new first-look development deal with both stars, which means they’ll continue to create and develop programming for Comedy Central. The deal actually covers all of Viacom’s networks, which means Glazer and Jacobson could wind up developing and producing for other outlets like MTV and Paramount Network as well.
Under the deal, Glazer and Jacobson will create and develop projects both together and separately for Comedy Central and Viacom. They already have three projects in the works at the channel: “Mall Town USA,...

Fans of the Broad City TV show don't have to worry about the series being cancelled too soon. Comedy Central renewed it through season five, back in January of 2016. Will their faith be rewarded, or will the ratings drop and make them regret the renewal? Stay tuned. A scripted comedy, Broad City follows two best friends -- Ilana (Ilana Glazer) and Abbi (Abbi Jacobson) -- as they navigate their twenties in New York City. In the fourth season, Comedy Central says, "Abbi and Ilana will experience NYC in a whole new way: the dead of winter." They'll also get new jobs, mark their "Friendiversary," experiment with mushrooms, explore being witches, and take a trip to Florida. Hannibal Buress, John Gemberling, Stephen Schneider, Arturo Castro, Paul W. Downs, Chris Gethard, Eliot Glazer, Susie Essman, Bob Balaban, and Nicole Drespel recur on the series.

If you’re coming out and you want the world to know, the flashiest way to do it (short of a show tune soliloquy) is to make a movie. Or, more realistically, a web series.
National Coming Out Day is observed on October 11th, the anniversary of the second March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, often referred to as “The Great March.” It is a celebration of what its founders called the most basic form of activism; standing up and being counted. On this day in 1991, “Bewitched” actor Dick Sargent came out on “The Geraldo Rivera Show.” This year, Kristen Stewart, Aubrey Plaza, Lilly Wachowski, Robin Lord Taylor and Holland Taylor all came out as some iteration of Lgbtq.

The best way to get a TV deal for your web series? Don’t try. At least, according to Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfeld that works, and they would know.
Sinclair and Blichfeld are the creators of “High Maintenance,” a brilliantly crafted, wholly original comedy that began its six-episode run on HBO last month. Sinclair also appears in the series, playing a weed delivery guy referred to simply as “the Guy,” who bikes to the homes of a parade of eccentric New Yorkers. The Guy has a kind of omniscient passport into the inner lives of the lonely, yearning, lost and downright looney people every New Yorker will recognize; if not from the subway, then from the mirror.

Comedy Central’s Broad City doesn’t return until January but that didn’t stop the show’s two stars, Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, from attending New York Comic Con over the weekend. Both funny ladies were on hand for their very first panel and talked to VH1 exclusively about that millennial label, working with family, and making fans gasp in season two.
It’s not easy launching a new series but Glazer and Jacobson struck ratings gold with their sitcom that found an audience with millennials and had critics raving about their brand of slacker comedy. “Season one we were meeting the audience and being like, ‘can we do this? Can we get together?’ ” Glazer says. And with season one behind them, the writing and acting pair are more confident than ever.
