Dave Grohl has unleashed the only live performance of his epic 23-minute, instrumental “Play,” which extends the song to a whopping 36 minutes.
Recorded during Warren Haynes’ 30th Annual Christmas Jam in 2018, the live version expands the breadth of the instrumental as Grohl is accompanied by Greg Kurstin on keyboards, Chris Chaney on bass, Drew Hester on percussion, and guitarists Jason Falkner, Alain Johannes, and Barrett Jones. However, it’s Asheville-based busker Abby the Spoon Lady who really steals the show. Watch the performance below.
“Play” was originally composed and performed entirely with Grohl on every instrument. The process of its recording was captured in a two-part documentary of the same name, released in 2018.
The track will appear on The Benefit Concert Volume 20, a collection of performances recorded on December 7th and 8th, 2018 in Asheville, North Carolina. Other featured artists include Eric Church, Joe Bonamassa, Gov’t Mule, Mike Gordon, Marco Benevento,...

Following the reveal of a spring tour run, Gov’t Mule has now announced a 12-date summer amphitheater tour. The Dark Side of the Mule Tour, produced by Live Nation, features the return of the Grammy-nominated band’s renowned and extremely rare Pink Floyd tribute performance which will follow a full Mule set and very special guest Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening opening. Gov’t Mule first debuted Dark Side of the Mule on Halloween 2008 at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston, which was recorded and later released as a live album in 2014. Years after, the band brought back the acclaimed set, a favorite with fans and critics alike, for a handful of shows, performing it only 10 times in total. With 2023 marking the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, Gov’t Mule is joining in on the celebration of the legendary album and bringing back Dark...

With Pink Floyd unlikely to reunite ever again, Gov’t Mule will fill the void this summer by embarking on “The Dark Side of the Mule Tour.”
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Dark Side of the Moon, Gov’t Mule will perform Pink Floyd covers on a newly announced amphitheater tour. Each show will also feature a separate set of Gov’t Mule originals, as well as special guest opener Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening.
According to frontman Warren Haynes, the upcoming tour will mark the final “Dark Side of the Mule” performances. “This all started so organically with what we thought would be a one-time Halloween performance [in 2018]. Since then, ‘Dark Side of the Mule’ has grown into something else. It’s a blast to perform this material but our intent is to do it for one final tour in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Dark Side.

Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins fronted the surviving members of the Doors for a bluesy performance of “Love Me Two Times” in 2016. The performance is part of The Doors: Break on Thru, an upcoming concert documentary honoring the late keyboardist Ray Manzarek, who died from cancer in 2013.
In the clip, Hawkins takes Jim Morrison’s lead vocals on the 1967 song, backed by Doors guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore. They’re joined by Stone Temple Pilots bassist Robert DeLeo as well as Foo Fighters keyboardist Rami Jaffee, who plays Manzarek’s iconic parts.

The annual pilgrimage to the Beacon Theatre became a winter event that my friends and I relished each and every March, something to brighten up the dull blues of winter. The Allman Brothers Band were more than just a "jam" band. And while they defined the Southern Rock ethos and kick-started the whole jam band movement, they were more than that. Yes, they were improvisational monsters, but they also wrote and played highly melodic music, music that stands the test of time; and they owned the covers they performed as well. Only The Grateful Dead could rival them as a live act with staying power, albeit cast in a different Americana psychedlic haze.
Yes, they had weathered the storm of plenty of internal band drama during the '70s, '80s and most of the '90s. They lost their lead guitarist guru Brother Duane Allman in a motorcycle accident...

Bridgeport, Conn. — The Gathering of the Vibes festival raises some challenging aesthetic questions: Among them, is it possible for a 1960s veteran with a long ponytail to wear tie-dyed shirt, shorts and socks without looking slightly silly, particularly if suffering from varicose veins?
And where else but a summer festival devoted in part to the legacy of the Grateful Dead would the practice of dancing in a bikini top and a long flowing skirt while keeping a hula hoop rotating on your hips catch on?
The festival, which concluded Sunday, draws roughly 20,000 exuberant celebrants to this faded industrial city on the Long Island Sound. It's held at Seaside Park, a beautiful 370-acre site, part of which was donated to the city by circus promoter P.T. Barnum, once a Bridgeport mayor.

Captain Kirk is headed back to space.

Shatner has had a storied music career, producing confusing, parodied yet somehow enlightening song covers and original bits over the past 40+ years. His first album, The Transformed Man, raised eyebrows with its bizarre covers, which, in what would become his trademark style, boasted dramatic readings of lyrics over music. Legendary guitarist gets small at New York's Iridium club.

Jeff Beck performs in New York on Wednesday
Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images
New York — How rare an event was the small-club show Jeff Beck played here on Wednesday night? Well, Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett flew in from his home in Hawaii to catch it. And he wasn't the only weighty player in attendance. Also crowding into the packed-out Iridium, a Broadway jazz club, were E Street Band (and "Sopranos") veteran Steven Van Zandt; onetime Stray Cat Brian Setzer; psychedelic-blues virtuoso Warren Haynes, of Gov't Mule; and such notable Beck buddies as Letterman bandleader Paul Shaffer.
They were all on hand to catch the great guitarist in an uncommon context. Beck's fiery, soaring style — which has been unendingly influential ever since he emerged as Eric Clapton's replacement in the Yardbirds in 1965 — makes glorious use of maximum volume.
