The 2025 Ace Eddie Award nominations are here, recognizing outstanding editing in 14 categories across film, TV, and documentaries. The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at UCLA’s Royce Hall.

Among the nominees are buzzy titles including “Emilia Pérez,” “Anora,” “Wicked,” and “the Substance,” while TV faves including “Baby Reindeer,” “Nobody Wants This,” and “The Bear” also made the cut.

As previously announced, the Ace Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award will go to “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu for distinguished achievement in the art and business of film, while career achievement awards go to film editors Maysie Hoy, Ace, and Paul Hirsch, Ace.

Oppenheimer continues its winning ways, adding the Ace Eddie Awards’ Best Edited Feature Film award to its lengthy list of honors. The 74th Annual Ace Eddie Awards, held on March 3, 2024, named The Holdovers as the Best Edited Feature Film winner, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse took home the Best Edited Animated Feature Film prize.

Presented by American Cinema Editors, this year’s Ace Eddie Awards was held at UCLA’s Royce Hall and hosted by Nina West. In addition to announcing winners in the competitive categories, the 2024 Ace Eddie Awards presented John Waters with the Ace Golden Eddie Award. Kate Amend and Walter Murch were recognized with Career Achievement Awards, and Stephen Lovejoy was honored with the Ace Heritage Award.

Eddie Hamilton, Ace, edited Maverick, a film that earned Tom Cruise the Producer’s Guild’s David O. Selznick award at last week’s PGA Awards. The Los Angeles Film Critics Association stretches back to 1975, a very great year in cinema history with one of Oscar's all time best Best Picture lineups (Dog Day Afternoon, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Nashville, Barry Lyndon, and Jaws). They gave four of those pictures awards in their first year, ignoring only Jaws. Though we normally despair that all film critics awards seem to be viewed through the prism of Oscar influence or prediction (critics groups should have their own identity / agenda or else what good are they?) in the Lafca's case it's difficult to avoid. Los Angeles is an industry town and these are their local critics. So go crazy when you're looking at this list and want to think of it in terms of Oscar; It's easy to argue that its the single critics list that Oscar voters take most seriously since the bulk of the membership lives there.

The Board of Governors from AMPAS have finally announced their selections for this year's Honorary Oscars. This year they're not giving out the Thalberg (for Producing) or the Hersholt (for Huminatarian efforts) but just the regular ol' Honorary Oscars. If such a thing can be deemed "regular" since they're so hard to come by. Consider that James Ivory still doesn't have one despite being a masterful oft imitated but never duplicated director behind three major Best Picture contenders (and many other beautiful films) and never having won an an Oscar and being 88 years old. Nathaniel wept. Oscar remains remarkably stingy with the gays but at least they've noticed the need for diversity in other ways.

We're about one month away from the announcement of this year's Honorary Oscar recipients. They're usuallly announced at the end of August for a November Governor's Awards ceremony. This year's ceremony will be on November 12th. Last year rumors circled that it was Doris Day's turn but that didn't turn out to be accurate. For the past two years, The Film Experience has tried to make up for the dearth of movie site reporting about the Oscar Honorary careers (beyond the sharing of press releases / YouTube videos of their speeches) with mini-retrospectives so we're always hoping they'll choose well to give us wonderful careers to discuss right here. 

Let's reprint a list of worthies we shared a year or so ago, with a few adjustments, in case any of the elites in the Academy are undecided about who to put forth or get behind for these coveted honors.

On the opening episode of the second season of Oxygen's "The Face," airing Wednesday, March 5, aspiring contestants strut down a catwalk in Bryant Park wearing black bras and panties while model coaches -- Naomi Campbell, Lydia Hearst and Anne V -- select hopefuls for their teams.

"There is a lot that you try to teach these girls in a very limited amount of time," Hearst tells Zap2it. "I want them to understand it is a very difficult and fickle industry, and you have to be willing to grow and challenge yourself and step outside your comfort zone. Nothing is truly personal. You have to have thick skin. You have to be willing to change your hair color."
