Since the airing of its first season in 2009, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has charted a new course for queer visibility and representation on television, amassing a staggering 19 Emmy wins from 39 total nominations. Now, on the heels of a game-changing 14th season, the hit reality competition program proves through the spirit and mentorship of its host and judges, the artistry and creativity of its crew, and the talents and storytelling of its cast of queens just how deep of an impact the series continues to have on television. Using the show’s iconic “fuzzy pink box” as a stand-in moderator, 11-time Emmy-winning host and producer RuPaul Charles leads a 2022 Emmys FYC panel alongside series judges Michelle Visage, Carson Kressley and Ross Mathews, including insight from season 14 winner Willow Pill and cast mates Kerri Colby, Bosco and Angeria Paris VanMichaels, as well as members of the crew from a variety of departments. RuPaul has taken home his sixth straight Emmy win for Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Competition Program.
It puts him in the same position as Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who broke the Emmy record by winning the best actress in a comedy award six times in a row for her role in Veep.
The win also sees RuPaul Charles tie the record for the most Emmy wins by a person of color with cinematographer Donald A. Morgan. If RuPaul wins at next week’s Emmys for Outstanding Competition Program for Drag Race, he will break the record.
The host of VH1’s RuPaul’s Drag Race thanked all of the people in the business who have been “kind” in his acceptance speech, recalling his role hosting The American Music Show, which started in 1981.
“I started in television 40 years ago on a public access station in Atlanta, Georgia. A little show called The American Music Show.

Reality casting is both an art and a science: It’s a bid to select compelling personalities who make great television, yet who aren’t so dramatic that they might bring negative publicity to the show. The fate of a reality show, after all, relies on its cast being engaging year after year. And in these challenging times, when audiences needed to escape more than ever before, the 2021 Emmy nominees for reality casting (who all also received series noms in their respective categories) — “Queer Eye,” “Top Chef,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” “Shark Tank” and “The Voice” — have delivered.
Goloka Bolte, the casting director for “Drag Race,” who with Ethan Petersen won the Emmy in the category last year, says the VH1 competition show “has a really unique casting process, in that we ask all the queens to make a videotape” that shows why they’re “quintuple threats.” Even if the producers...

‘Drag Race,’ ‘Love Is Blind,’ ‘Queer Eye’ Casting Directors on Finding Honest and Open Personalities
Those who cast unscripted series often have thousands of audition tapes to pore through. Since the medium requires a diversity of perspective and personality, but not always special skills, what often catches the eye and helps one rise to the top of the pile is being an “open book,” says Goloka Bolte, co-founder of the Casting Firm, who casts “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” This willingness to share one’s true self can help make stars — or at least social-media sensations. Therefore, honesty and authenticity were two key traits for which all of this year’s Emmy-nominees in the reality program casting looked.

Ethan Petersen and Goloka Bolte, co-founders of the Casting Firm, are the keepers of the first door that drag queens have to sashay through to a land a spot on “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
The duo, who have been casting the hit reality competition show for the last six of the show’s 10 seasons (and the upcoming 11th season), receive up to 3,000 applications from drag queens each season hoping to be crowned America’s next drag superstar. From there, 1,000 send in their audition tapes. By the time Petersen and Bolte are ready to present their choices to RuPaul and World of Wonder, they’ve dwindled the list down to just a few more than the 14 contestants who will get the chance to contour, death drop, and lip sync for their lives.
“To get this nomination for a show that represents the Lgbt community, it’s huge for us,” Petersen says.
