‘A Woman Scorned’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Megan Purvis, Hannah Pauley, Aaron-Jon North, Georgia Wood, Chelsea Greenwood | Written by Anya Vallentin | Directed by Becca Hirani, Michael Hoad

Some movies want to be deep. A Woman Scorned just wants to watch Megan Purvis beat the living hell out of people, and honestly, it’s all the better for it.

Directed by Becca Hirani and Michael Hoad, A Woman Scorned starts off with a simple setup: two sisters, Jas (Purvis) and Laura (Hannah Pauley), escape to the English countryside for a quiet, healing weekend. Unfortunately, they run into a pack of greasy, sinister men led by Randy (a magnificently slimy Aaron-Jon North). What begins as a tense brush-off quickly escalates into home invasion, murder, and, very, very messy revenge.

It’s a straightforward premise, but that’s what makes it sing. Once things kick off, A Woman Scorned becomes a full-throttle, blood-soaked tale of survival and payback, and...

Gothic Horror Film 'The Monster Beneath Us' Trailer with Becca Hirani
Image
"There is no one in the basement!" Or is there? An official trailer has debuted for an indie horror film from the UK called The Monster Beneath Us, the latest from filmmaker Sophie Osbourne. This first premiered at FrightFest in the UK a few months ago, and will be out on VOD in the US to watch in January 2025. This gothic horror is set in Yorkshire, 1898. A grieving woman and her son move back to the unoccupied house of her ex husband, recently found dead, but they discover that they are not alone inside the house. Her young son mentions he has a new friend who lives in the basement of their sprawling country estate. However, as the boy spends more time in the dark, cold space under the house, her concern begins to turn in to fear... Starring Becca Hirani, Marshall Hawkes, and Nicola Wright. Ohh yeah there's definitely...

Frightfest 2024: ‘The Monster Beneath Us’ Review
Image
Stars: Jack Forsyth-Noble, Nicola Wright, Becca Hirani, Marshall Hawkes, Jennifer Lim, Sue Kelly, Karl Hughes, Alice Mukunku, Tom Ryan | Written and Directed by Sophie Osbourne

Set in Yorkshire in 1898, The Monster Beneath Us begins by showing a man in distress. Residing in his country house, Lord James Abbington (Jack Forsyth-Noble) is worrying housekeeper Mrs. Gray (Nicola Wright) about how unwell he appears. What is the cause for his erratic behaviour? That is uncertain, as he soon becomes unnerved at the sight of a shadowed figure emerging before him, and the situation ends with James using a gun to take his own life.

The story then takes a calmer approach, as James’ grieving wife, Lady Grace Abbington (Becca Hirani), arrives by carriage with her young son, Charles (Marshall Hawkes). They move into the manor intent on settling affairs, a decision intended to be temporary, as mounting debts amassed by her ex-husband...

A submarine vanishing prompts a rescue operation that comes face to face with the cause -The Loch Ness Monster. Here we are again, with yet another film in the seemingly never-ending inter-connected world of British low-budget horror filmmaking. ‘Medusa’s Venom’ VOD Review (Amazon Prime)
Image
Stars: Becca Hirani, Sarah T. Cohen, Connor Powles, May Kelly, Rita Di Tuccio, Ella Starbuck, Katiris Cooper, Asian Dixon, Keith Myles, Kate Sandison | Written by Craig McLearie | Directed by Chase Martins

I was a big fan of 2021’s Medusa, aka Medusa: Queen of Serpents, mainly down to the brilliant performance from Megan Purvis in the lead role of Carly and Sarah T.Cohen as her friend… and the fact the film was unlike anything producer Scott Jeffrey had been involved with at the time. For Medusa was a topical drama, wrapped up in the skin (pun intended) of a horror film; like the best of the genre the film was much more than skin deep (pun intended again), offering a layered tale about how women are treated in society. The film was all the more remarkable as it felt like one of the smallest productions Jeffrey and co. had put together.

Bradley Cooper in Burnt (2015)
"So we did it - actually moved in together... Scary, isn't it?" "Terrifying." Indeed it is... Strain Pictures has debuted this "fun little horror short film" titled Burnt, both written and directed by British actor Danny Morgan. A young couple move into a new home and find a little gift leftover by the previous tenants. But this old toaster isn't the warm welcome they thought it might be. Starring Scott Chambers and Becca Hirani. This is another great simple but clever horror short that takes a wacky idea and makes it believable. At least for 10 mins. Now I don't want toast. Tip via Danny: "Set video quality to HD and play loud!" Enjoy. Thanks to Twitter for the tip on this one. Very brief description from YouTube: "Just when you thought it was safe to go into the kitchen..." Burnt is both written and directed by the British actor...

The folks at Proportion Productions are back with Another genre film, The Final Scream – headlined, once again, by actress Kate Lister. This time round Scott Jeffrey, co-writer of Mummy Reborn, steps behind the camera for his second feature which tells the story of Kia (Lister), an actress recently dumped by her agent for being too old, who is invited to a final re-call for a role in a horror film, also called The Final Scream. Of course not all is as it seems and the casting call is much more than just another screen test; and her director Tim (Marc Ozall) has an “interesting” way of getting the emotional range he requires from his cast… and her audition workshop that weekend, filmed as...

An Evil Mummy Wreaks Havoc in Trailer For The Mummy Reborn
While Universal Pictures is looking at rebooting their classic movie monster franchises, High Octane Pictures is releasing their own Mummy monster movie called The Mummy Reborn. While this is more of a low budget movie with a bunch of actors that you’ve never heard of, it looks a lot more entertaining than Tom Cruise’s Mummy movie!

The Mummy Reborn tells of a group of teens in financial ruin that decide to rob the local antique store of an ancient amulet. But what they don't realize is that this tomb is cursed, and when the amulet is separated from it's master he will do anything to get it back. Our burglars must save the day and return the Mummy to it's tomb before it is too late to save the world.

The movie was directed by Dan Allen from a script he wrote with Scott Jeffrey. It stars Becca Hirani...

‘Don’t Blink’ DVD Review
Stars: Becca Hirani, Kate Lister, Julia Eringer, Klariza Clayton, Scott Chambers, Alex Sawyer, Therica Wilson-Read, Richard Summers-Calvert, Georgina Dugdale, Charlene Cooper, Carey Thring, Shelley Lankovits | Written by Scott Jeffrey | Directed by Jamie Weston

[Note: With the film finally released on DVD here in the UK (the Us release was over a year ago), here’s a reposting of our review of Fox Trap, now retitled Don’t Blink for its UK debut]

After a cruel prank goes wrong on prom night leaving a young girl disabled, the group go their separate ways and try to leave the incident in the past. Eight years later the group are invited to a country side manor for a reunion. Things may seem strange at first, but as the night goes on they realise they can’t escape the past and find themselves at the mercy of a masked killer out for revenge.

Don’t Blink manages to recreate the classic slasher genre for a modern audience, although it still maintains the characterises and formula which made the revenge slashers films of the 80’s so popular.

Review: House on Elm Lake (2017)
I don’t think there is ever a good time to buy a house on a lake. I mean, why would you? Yeah it might be “pretty” or have a lovely view but the main problem is you’re out in the middle of nowhere. You may have one neighbour but they are all but guaranteed to be a nut-job. The rest is miles of trees and lake. If you ever get in trouble, you’re basically screwed. But I get it, people do buy these houses. But explain this to me. Why would you buy a house on a lake where recently someone murdered their entire family and then committed suicide (Hmm, sounds familiar) I honestly do not see the logic in it, at all. It’s basically horror 101 and you’re going to die. Or maybe not. Who knows?

House on Elm Lake follows Hayley (Becky Fletcher), Eric...

‘House On Elm Lake’ Review
Stars: Becca Hirani, Andrew Hollingworth, Faye Goodwin, Lorena Andrea, Tara MacGowran, Oliver Ebsworth, Tony Manders, Kate Lush | Written by Shannon Holiday | Directed by James Klass

House on Elm Lake opens with a terrified mother and young son bound and gagged while their knife-wielding patriarch paces and rants. The terror and confusion beams across loud and clear. Whatever is wrong with the husband, no amount of pleading from his wife or his child will change their fate. The scene is tense, the scene is harrowing, and because this is a horror movie, the scene is full of stabbing. Cut to years later and a new family, Haley, Eric, and their daughter Penny, movie into the quaint, lakeside home.

What the script lacks in originality, it certainly makes up for in competent scares. The haunted house genre may be well-worn territory, but it’s been a horror staple over several decades for a good reason.

Interview: Becky Fletcher talks ‘Darker Shades of Elise’ and more!
With the recent release of the erotic thriller Darker Shades of Elise, I got a chance to talk to Becky Fletcher about her feature films coming out 2017, the challenges of acting and her morbidly unique acting bucket list. Check out the interview, in full, below:

How did you first get into acting?

I have done it my whole life. I started off doing stage at school and progress my studies to A level university. I didn’t come into screen acting until I moved to London, it’s one of the things I came here for, I wanted to do more film and stuff behind the camera. I didn’t really start training in that discipline until I moved here a couple of years ago, but it’s kind of been an ongoing thing since then.

You are currently working with Proportion Productions who are releasing five films this year...

Review: Unhinged (2017)
Melissa (Kate Lister) and her three friends have come from America and are travelling along the back roads of England on route to her wedding. When Melissa is attacked, her sister Lisa (Lucy-Jane Quinlan) accidentally kills the attacker when trying to save her. Concerned as to how this would look, they decide to hide the body in the boot of the car with the intention of burying the body later.

After continuing their journey, they run out of petrol in the middle of the Essex countryside. With nothing around for several miles, they seek help from a nearby cottage, where the solo occupier Miss Perkins (Michelle Archer) offers them somewhere to stay until the local gardener returns to help. No phones, no help and a dead body in the car. Things may seem bad now, but they don’t realise it’s going to get worse.

In the horror genre...

Review: Fox Trap (2016)
Slasher movies have always flooded the Dtv marketplace as they are quick to make and cheap to produce and ultimately the go to sub-genre for student filmmakers. With this easy access, the vast majority of these films are bound to be either completely unwatchable or so devoid of talent that you end up wondering why you bothered. I’d be lying if I told you Fox Trap breaks new ground or plays outside the box, it doesn’t, but what it does well is emulate the best aspects of past slasher favourites and provides a thriller that will surely please genre fans.

Keeping with tradition, Fox Trap opens with a prologue. It’s prom night and a group of friends prank one of their fellow classmates, naturally the stunt goes horribly wrong. Fast forward eight years later, and the same group of friends have all received invitations to a reunion...

Review: Darker Shades of Elise (2017)
The bored housewife embarking on an affair has always been a staple of erotic thrillers from Dtv classics such as Animal Instincts (1992) and Secret Games (1992) to more mainstream fare like Unfaithful (2002) – these sexually frustrated women, tired of being ignored by their workaholic husbands decide to go out and have some fun. Not merely being erotic films, the thriller element kicked in when the leading ladies found themselves out of their depth and their fooling around came back to bite them.

Taking inspiration from such predecessors, 2017’s British production, Darker Shades of Elise finds Becky Fletcher’s title character beginning a torrid affair with a photographer, Felix (Arron Blake), after she strongly suspects that her husband (Tommy Vilés) is also cheating. What begins as a kinky fling beginning with simple transgressions such as making love whilst Elise’s husband is in the next room, spirals out of control as Felix starts...

Unhinged stars a bevy of British talent, including Kate Lister, Lucy Jane-Quinlan, Becky Fletcher, Louisa Warren – may of whom have appeared in other Proportion Productions output.

First look at video nasty remake ‘Unhinged’
Unhinged was one of many movies in the early 80s to find itself tangled up in the video nasties scandal here in the UK… However, unlike a lot of its “nasty” brethren, the film was less controversial, actualy playing more ike a traditional slasher movie than a gore-filled monstrosity. Which is why the film has since been re-released, without cuts; as most recently as 2014, when then-burgeoning UK distributor 88 Films put out the film on DVD.

Now I mention 88 Films as they, along with ITN Distribution have picked up a Remake, yes remake, of the former video nasty for a release on DVD and VOD this year. But wait, I hear you ask, who’s behind this remake? Well…
