William Jackson Harper has never set out to be the leading man. But that’s exactly what he is in Season 2 of HBO Max’s romantic dramedy Love Life.
Instead, Harper says, he took the role of book editor-turned-author Marcus Watkins because he’s a complicated character.

Sony Pictures Classics releases Telluride-darling documentary Julia with a national TV push, culinary events and virtual screenings through November hosted by famous chefs from Alice Waters (San Francisco) and Johnny Spero (Boston) to Jamie Bissonnette (Houston) and luminaries from New York, LA, Philly and Miami.
Directors Betsy West and Julie Cohen talked up the film on one Today show segment, followed by another, where food stylist Susan Spungen made Child’s recipe for pear and almond tarts. Chef Marcus Samuelsson – who appears in the film — cooked Julia Child’s classic roasted chicken and glazed carrots on Rachel Ray. A Nightline interview with West and Cohen airs next week.
Marketing and outreach is key in the current tepid specialty market.
“Every city is new event. It’s a real grassroots campaign,” said Sony Pictures Classic co-president Tom Bernard. That includes ads in food sections of newspapers, on cooking podcasts and YouTube.

Mature content means something different when it comes to Eleanor Coppola’s narrative features. “Love Is Love Is Love” — opening Friday theatrically — is the director’s second narrative film. And as with her 2017 debut, “Paris Can Wait,” Coppola writes and shoots what she knows: the lives of women of a certain age — but also of a rather rarefied status.
Coppola has gathered a fine ensemble of actors, many of whom likely share in her concerns about the paucity of big-screen stories for — and featuring — grown women. The three vignettes in this at times tender, occasionally amusing adventure in romance, marriage and friendship provide a number of textured moments for their female performers. Johanna Whalley nails marital knowingness in “Two for Dinner.” Kathy Baker proves to be the adult in the room — er, on deck — in “Sailing Lesson.” The dinner table in “Late Lunch” is ringed with welcome guests who underscore...

As Season 2 of HBO Max’s Love Life got underway, Marcus Watkins comfortably navigated the world projecting the facade of a cool, laid-back dude. And then a funny thing happened. He got to know a woman named Mia, and suddenly his mask fell away.
But life’s gonna life. And at the time Marcus (played by The Good Place‘s William Jackson Harper) met Mia (2 Dope Queens‘ Jessica Williams), he was married to Emily (Utopia‘s Maya Kazan), making those sparks he shared with the attractive woman from the wedding they attended — the one who wasn’t his wife — super complicated.

When “Love Life” premiered in May 2020, America had an orange-haired cartoon for a president, seemingly every citizen wanted a vaccine, and HBO Max was launching to direct competition from a one-month-old streamer called Quibi. All that has since changed, and Season 2 of Sam Boyd’s anthology series has, too. The creator is joined by new co-showrunners Bridget Bedard (“Transparent”) and Rachelle Williams (“Survivor’s Remorse”), who welcome William Jackson Harper as the season’s new lead. The pandemic only lingers around the periphery of his years-spanning search for a partner. And there’s no pressure on the season to prop up HBO Max as a worthwhile streaming investment, since a) everyone has already subscribed to keep up with Season 3 of “Succession,” and b) the mighty Quibi has been vanquished.

HBO Max has released the trailer and key art for “Love Life,” slated to return for its sophomore season on Oct. 28. Emmy nominee and executive producer William Jackson Harper, best known for his role as Chidi Anagonye on NBC’s “The Good Place,” will lead the anthology series, which had previously focused on the character of Darby Carter, played by Anna Kendrick.
Season 2, which hails from Lionsgate Television and Feigco Entertainment, follows Marcus Watkins (Harper) after his marriage unexpectedly implodes. He is forced to rebuild his life brick by brick, hoping to find a love that will last, once and for all. "You've change, you know?" "Thank you for noticing." Blue Fox Ent. has released an official trailer for an indie romantic drama titled Love Is Love Is Love, the latest film from filmmaker Eleanor Coppola (also director of Paris Can Wait), who also so happens to be Francis Ford Coppola's wife for many years. A woven tale of three stories that explore love, commitment, and loyalty between couples and friends. An anthology of stories about love, with various events that provide "surprising revelations." Throughout all three stories, Coppola uses a light touch and naturalistic ease to find the heart of the deepest friendships and romances. The ensemble cast features Joanna Whalley, Chris Messina, Kathy Baker, Marshall Bell, Maya Kazan, Cybill Shepherd, Rosanna Arquette, and Rita Wilson. This looks quite wholesome and life-affirming, just a charming series of stories about the ups and downs of life and love. It's worth a quick look.

Anna Kendrick’s Darby Carter found her person, Grant (Kingsley Ben-Adir), at the end of “Love Life” Season 1. And in the teaser for the second season of the HBO Max anthology series, the wedding gown-wearing Darby literally steps out of focus while celebrating her just-married status at a bar with her friends, and the show’s next protagonist enters the frame: Marcus Watkins, played by “The Good Place” alum William Jackson Harper.
Per HBO Max, the second season of “Love Life” focuses on Marcus as he comes out of a years-long relationship with the woman he thought was going to be his person. After the rug is pulled out from under him, he is plunged back into the search for the romantic fulfillment he thought he’d already found.

An understated, graphic-novel-esque take on desire and connection is threaded through with humour
An affecting – and apparently real – home-birth sequence comprises the last 15 minutes of Egyptian film-maker Sam Abbas’s otherwise fictional short feature. The sudden onrush of biological imperative gives this footage a gripping undeniability and focus that this loosely collaged account of a foundering Brooklyn relationship has been searching for – or perhaps that its characters are dodging.
It’s not the film’s central couple, though, who are having a child. Present in the apartment is Jamie (Poorna Jagannathan), who with Jenna (Maya Kazan) appears to be acting as a doula, a kind of spiritual guide, to the parents-to-be. Jenna strongly resembles Tess (Nikohl Boosheri), the partner with whom we see Jenna sharing her life in the film’s initial section. They take pottery classes, traipse through an exhibition, order antidepressants; all activities grasping for completeness but undertaken with an undertow of disquiet.

Steven Soderbergh has revealed a sequel to The Knick is in the works centered on André Holland’s Dr. Algernon C. Edwards character. The original series ended after two seasons on Cinemax in 2015, but was not officially canceled until two years later, in 2017. There had long been speculation about a possible new installment. Clive Owen, who headlined the first two seasons of the medical drama, had said that he was done at the end of the second season, though the network had left the door slightly open for a new season with a new lead actor. (Owen’s character died at the end of Season 2.)
Now in an interview with The Playlist, Soderbergh confirmed a pilot script has been written by The Knick creators Jack Amiel and Michael Begler, with input from The Knick co-star Holland, who would reprise his role, and filmmaker Barry Jenkins.

"A party crasher that is out of this world." Quiver Distr. has released an official trailer for an indie horror comedy titled Useless Humans, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Stephen Ohl. This sounds and looks like one of those extra wacky, shoestring budget indie films that is ambitious but actually impressively entertaining. A 30th birthday -- and the survival of mankind -- are left hanging in the balance after a mysterious alien creature crashes the party, forcing four childhood friends to save the night. Starring Josh Zuckerman, Rushi Kota, Davida Williams, Luke Youngblood, Edy Ganem, Maya Kazan, Joey Kern, and Iqbal Theba. This surprisingly looks like some good, stupid fun with a terrible man-in-suit monster and more shenanigans. Might actually be a good time, I want to watch this. Check it out below. Michael Angarano is an underrated actor. Performances in films like The Art of Getting By, Ceremony, In a Relationship, and Red State showcase this. A few years ago, he also wrote and directed a project which he also starred in. That project, Avenues, played a film festival or two, but never came out. This week, it finally does, and it is well worth the wait. Angarano gives one of his best performances to date, while also showcasing some admirable filmmaking chops. It all builds to a low key little gem of a movie. You’ll have to search this one out, but it’s well worth the trouble. Angarano has got the goods. The movie is a dramedy taking place over more or less a single day. The day is the birthday of Max (Angarano), an underachieving writer dealing, or more aptly, not dealing, with the recent suicide of his brother.

If you don’t know what a “unicorn” is in the parlance of the bedroom, the title of this film may come as a bit of a surprise for you. A romantic comedy through and through, it explores a cute and fairly commonplace cinematic relationship, with the added bonus of throwing in something new. Despite the sexy title, which is code for a person who wants to engage in an encounter with a couple, just know that if you’re bemoaning the lack of rom coms in the marketplace these days, this movie is a tonic. It’s here to make the strong case that the genre has some life left in it. A fun little independent flick, it offers more than its fair share of smiles. The film is a romantic comedy about a couple who inadvertently learns that they need to spice up their relationship. Caleb (Nick Rutherford...

The film, from The Orchard, stars Nick Rutherford and Lauren Lapkus as a newly engaged (if not newly involved – they’ve been together four years) couple whose eyes are opened when they visit Malory’s free-spirited parents on the occasion of the latter’s 25th anniversary.
The secret to a long marriage, it turns out, is a unicorn. More bluntly, a third sex partner.
The logline: When an engaged couple, Caleb and Malory is forced to visit Palm Springs for a weekend to celebrate Malory’s parents’ 25th wedding vow renewal, they discover the apparent secret to their happy marriage. Determined to properly celebrate their own ‘re-engagement,’ they set out on a wild night, but this fun and innocent new experience takes an intense turn,...

Exclusive: The Orchard has taken the North American distribution rights to Robert Schwartzman’s romantic comedy The Unicorn with an eye on a theatrical and digital release during early 2019.
Nick Rutherford and Lauren Lapkus star as engaged couple, Caleb and Malory who after spending a weekend in Palm Springs with the latter’s parents learn what the secret is to the elders’ 25 years of marriage: Threesomes. Looking to solidify their own relationship, Caleb and Malory go about finding their own “unicorn” or third sex partner for the bedroom. Schwartzman directs, and produced with Russell Wayne Groves. Pic also stars Lucy Hale, Beck Bennett, Dree Hemingway, Beverly D’Angelo, John Kapelos, Maya Kazan, Darrell Britt-Gibson, and Kyle Mooney.
The deal for The Unicorn was negotiated between The Orchard’s Danielle Digiacomo and ICM Partners & Submarine Entertainment on behalf of the filmmakers. The pic made its world premiere at SXSW back in March.

HBO introduced Big Little Lies as mini-series last year, but it was so popular, they eventually renewed it for a second season. Now, here comes the Mosaic TV show. Like Big Little Lies it has a pretty big star taking the lead. What's more, Steven Soderbergh directed it, and alternative view points of the series are available via a new, interactive iOS/Android mobile app. That seems like a pretty big investment for a six-episode series. Could it be the next anthology? Will Mosaic be cancelled or renewed for season two? Stay tuned. An HBO murder mystery Mosaic stars Sharon Stone, Garrett Hedlund, Frederick Weller, Jennifer Ferrin, Beau Bridges, Paul Reubens, Devin Ratray, Maya Kazan, James Ransone, Jeremy Bobb, Zandy Hartig, Michael Cerveris, Bridey Elliott, Brandon Ray Olive, Trey Burvant, Peter D’Alessio, Jacob Vargas, Loudon Wainwright III, and Allison Tolman.

HBO has revealed the release date and a new trailer for Steven Soderbergh's innovative, multi-platform murder series...
'Innovation' is a word that gets tossed around rather lightly in the hyperbolic TV-writing world. Steven Soderbergh's upcoming murder mystery series for HBO, however, seems like it will be truly worthy of the title.
Mosaic will be a seemingly straight-forward murder mystery in which small town cops must solve the murder of children's book illustrator Olivia Lake (Sharon Stone). But veteran film director Soderbergh is going to add an interesting wrinkle for the next step in his burgeoning TV career (Soderbergh recently produced quality shows like The Girlfriend Experience and The Knick).
The catch is that many viewers will have already seen Mosaic before it debuts - from many different perspectives. The Mosaic app has been available on Apple and Google stores for a month now and it allows...

Two years removed from “The Knick,” Steven Soderbergh is once again behind the director’s chair for a TV series. This time it’s the outré-sounding “Mosaic,” a murder mystery told from several different characters’ perspectives premiering on HBO later this month. Sharon Stone, Paul Reubens, and Garrett Hedlund star in the show, which was first released as an interactive smartphone app. Watch the new trailer below.

HBO has released a new trailer for Steven Soderbergh's upcoming film Mosaic, which allows its viewers to choose the direction of the story. It's an experimental form of filmmaking it looks like it will be a fun, entertaining, and innovative experience! It's like a live-action "Choose Your Own Adventure" book. I'm sure you all remember those.
When talking about the technology that allows this more immersive movie experience to exist, Soderbergh said:
“It’s a branching narrative piece. Branching narratives have been around forever, but technology now allows, I hope, for a more elegant, intuitive form of engagement than used to be possible. We spent a lot of time on how you touch this thing. I wanted to make sure that it was beautiful and simple, so that when the opportunity arises for you to decide whose perspective you want to follow, it feels organic and not like an...

I love it when writer and director Steven Soderbergh experiments and takes risks with his projects. The guy is an innovator and he's got a new project coming out from HBO that looks and sounds like it could be a ton of fun.
This is a film project is called Mosaic and what makes it so cool and innovative is that fact that it's a "choose your own adventure" experience! Yeah, these types of stories have been around for a long time, but with the technology we have now, it's more immersive. Soderbergh says:

With a title that sounds a like a rehab facility, Michael Angarano’s Avenues is a spirited, micro-budget indie that recalls the New York City-based work of early Woody Allen with notes of John Cassavetes, Whit Stillman, and the Safdie brothers thrown in for good measure. These are excellent influences to aspire to, although the film’s narrative clutter and occasional missteps allow the scrappiness to show. Filmed quickly in a few days on the go, Avenues tells the story of Max (Angarano) as he mourns his bother Jack (who is never seen on screen) while passing time with his best friend Peter (Nicholas Braun), a sex therapist who has arrived in New York City for winter break. Peter is also about to break-up with his long-distance girlfriend who he’s en route to visit in Montreal.
