The Mean Street for this Martin Scorsese picture is Wall Street. His show pushes the hard- R rating to depict the wild life and times of a stock-selling pirate who bilks investors for millions that fuel a ten-year spree of obscene consumption, Bad Boy decadence and absurd levels of sex and drug abuse. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Jordan Belfort beautifully, surrounded by a corps of terrific players (including Margot Robbie) given clear characters by Terence Winter and superb direction by Scorsese. The surprise is that the show is not a facile take-down of the American Dream. Screaming greed is the lure and the joke’s on us. Co-starring Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Kyle Chandler, Rob Reiner, Jon Bernthal, Jon Favreau, Jean Dujardin and Joanna Lumley.

IFC presents Mia Hansen-Løve’s Cannes entry Bergman Island, Film Movement brings Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy to the arthouse this weekend, as A24’s surprise hit Lamb and Greenwich Entertainment’s The Rescue go wider week two after a strong open. It’s early days but a nascent specialty revival may be in the works ahead of a stream of potential hits from The French Dispatch to Spencer to Belfast.
Icelandic horror folktale Lamb moves from 500 to over 800 screens after viewers – can we say flocked? – to the Ari Aster-ish genre pic (Hereditary in 2018 was also from A24). Adventure documentary The Rescue, by the directors of Free Solo, where intrepid divers save a Thai boys soccer club trapped in a remote flooded cave, expands from five screens to 552.

The first 40 minutes of “Hard Luck Love Song” are so aggressively off-putting, even the unluckiest of audiences may be tempted to to walk out of the theater or turn off the TV. The arrantly contrived last 20 minutes are equally patience-testing — and borderline loony to boot. Everything in between is bearable, if only by comparison, but not particularly worth the bother.
Director Justin Corsbie and co-writer Ugoretz devote an inordinate amount of time to an interminable slog of a set-up, introducing their protagonist, Jesse (Michael Dorman of Apple TV’s “For All Mankind”), as a struggling country music singer-songwriter who, judging from what we hear of his songs, might do well to give up the struggle. When it comes to making money, he’s more successful as a pool hustler. But not always. When we first see him rolling into an unnamed small city in his battered Chevy Nova, he has his hand in a cast.

"It'll be just like old times." "That's scary..." Roadside Attractions has revealed the full official trailer for an indie romantic drama titled Hard Luck Love Song, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Justin Corsbie. This premiered at last year's Austin Film Festival, the perfect place for this kind of musician romance tale of ups and downs, and good and bad. At its core, the film is a modern day love story wrapped in a gritty, compelling character study. A love story about a charismatic but down-on-his-luck troubadour living out of cheap motels and making bad decisions. The film is actually based on the song "Just Like Old Times" by Todd Snider. This stars Michael Dorman and Sophia Bush as the two lovers, plus Dermot Mulroney, Eric Roberts, Brian Sacca, Melora Walters, & RZA. So this is a "haunting" love story and a neo-noir western? Well okay, sure why not. Looks...

“Just Like Old Times,” a fan favorite from singer-songwriter Todd Snider’s critically acclaimed 2006 album The Devil You Know, is not the most likely Hollywood source material.
But that’s exactly what happened with Hard Luck Love Song, the upcoming feature film starring Michael Dorman, Sophia Bush, RZA, Brian Sacca, Toni Robison-May, and Dermot Mulroney. The film features a script based on the Snider fan favorite.
Directed by Justin Corsbie, the film, which is distributed by Roadside Attractions (Manchester By the Sea, The Peanut Butter Falcon) will be released in theaters on October 15th.

Oscilloscope Laboratories is teaming with Mailchimp once again for #SupportTheShorts, a free streaming event featuring a selection of short films from the SXSW Film Festival on the global streaming platform Mailchimp Presents.
#SupportTheShorts launched last year when SXSW was canceled due to Covid-19 and hundreds of short filmmakers lost the opportunity for their work to be seen. To remedy this, Mailchimp partnered with Oscilloscope to give these short films and their creators a digital home where their work could be enjoyed from anywhere.
This year’s online edition of SXSW brings back the platform for filmmakers to showcase their art at the festival and to a broader audience. We all have our cultural blind spots. Some of us have never seen “Citizen Kane,” while others just learned who Lil Nas X is. And some of us do not understand the comedic minutiae of life in Buffalo, New York. Buffalo native Brian Sacca is not a member of the latter group, something he makes immediately and abundantly apparent on every page of his first feature-length screenplay, “Buffaloed.” The result, directed by Tanya Wexler, is amusing.

“Haven’t you ever dreamed of something more?” That’s the question our down-and-out protagonist asks in “Buffaloed,” but it also comes to mind as we wait for Tanya Wexler’s uneven comedy to fulfill its potential.
Young Peg Dahl (Zoey Deutch) should be among Buffalo’s most promising citizens; she begins the film as a brilliant student with a laser focus and Wall Street goals. But the system is solidly stacked against her, and she can’t afford to go to college. She has to find another route to success, and her chosen approach — selling counterfeit Bills tickets — instead lands her in jail.
Facing few other options on release, she takes a job with the city’s sleaziest con-man, Wizz (Jai Courtney). Wizz runs a brazenly loathsome debt-collection agency, and Peg soon becomes his top collector. In fact, it’s so easy to shake down firefighters and new mothers...

Less than a decade into her professional acting career, Zoey Deutch long ago reached the “can do anything” stage of her trajectory. A skilled comedian who infuses her characters with pathos and likability, Deutch’s roles have spanned genres, tones, and reach. She’s done the sad-eyed Ya thing (“Before I Fall”) and the cute rom-com thing (“Set It Up”), the studio sequel thing (“Zombieland: Double Tap”) and the Richard Linklater hangout movie thing (“Everybody Wants Some!!”), even making time for the Netflix series thing (“The Politician”). The actress’ fizzy, frenetic charm is strong enough to bolster the thinnest of concepts, and every role she takes on is better for her contributions. But she can’t save everything.

Almost a year ago, I saw Buffaloed at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival and was absolutely blown away. Not only is it a wonderfully smart and razor sharp satirical dramedy, it features the best turn to date by Zoey Deutch, who is quickly becoming among the most exciting actresses in the business. With the movie finally coming out this Friday, it’s a perfect excuse to unveil the first installment for 2020 of the Spotlight on the Stars series, since Deutch is well on her way to being one of the biggest in the industry. Mark my words, ladies and gentlemen, she’s shooting straight to the top of the A-list. The film itself is the year’s best title, without question. The synopsis, courtesy of Rotten Tomatoes, is as follows: “Peg Dahl (Zoey Deutch) has never run with the Buffalo pack. As a young girl obsessed with making enough cash to...

Magnolia Pictures has acquired the U.S. rights to Buffaloed, the Tribeca Film Festival comedy from director Tanya Wexler (Hysteria) and producer-star Zoey Deutch, the scene-stealing co-star of Zombieland: Double Tap.
Magnolia has set Valentines Day as a theatrical and on-demand release date for Buffaloed.
“Buffaloed is a hoot from start to finish,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “Tanya Wexler’s direction is perfectly on point and Zoey Deutch kicks major ass.”
The full synopsis from Magnolia describes Buffaloed as “an engrossing comedy about a natural-born hustler and her descent into the unorthodox world of debt collection as a way out of her seemingly dead-end life in Buffalo, New York. Buffalo is the debt collection capital of America, though Peg Dahl (Zoey Deutch) never saw herself in that world. She’s bet on her sharp mind—and even sharper mouth—to get her out of town and into an Ivy League university.

Set in the rough and tumble world of South Buffalo–the streets that raised tough guys like the crude former New York State gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino–Buffaloed is a surprisingly fun comedy about the rise and fall of an up-and-coming hustler, gleefully played with a thick (and accurate) Western New York accent by Zoey Deutch. Deutch’s Peg Dahl aspires to not be another house-wife raising her kids on five-cent wings and starts running minor cons in high school until selling bootleg Buffalo Bills tickets lands her in prison.
In jail, she studies the basics of distribution while learning to fend herself. Sales, she believes, is at the heart of everything. After her release she finds herself back in South Buffalo, living with her mom Kathy (Judy Greer), who runs an unregulated salon out of a laundry room at home and working at her brother Jj’s (Noah Reed) local dive bar.

At that time, star Zach Cregger announced the series' end on Twitter. Now the TBS cancellation has been confirmed.
A TBS single-camera comedy, Wrecked also stars Ally Maki, Asif Ali, Brian Sacca, Brooke Dillman, Jessica Lowe, Rhys Darby, and Will Greenberg. Guest stars include Rob Corddry, Eugene Cordero, Jonno Roberts, Karan Soni, Rachel House, Robert Baker, and Will Hines. The Lost parody centers on a diverse group of strangers who are stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash. In the third and final season, the castaways find themselves shipwrecked on a mysterious billionaire’s private island, where they're forced to hunt each other to the death in a basic-cable battle royale.

It’s official — TBS will not be ordering a fourth season of its comedy series Wrecked.
The writing had been on the wall for the series about a group of people stranded on an island, after their airplane crashed in the ocean. Its third season ended its run in October, and star Zach Cregger indicated on Twitter last summer that there would be no fourth season.
Wrecked, a comedic take on Lost — was a breakout hit for TBS when it debuted in 2016 but its ratings have tapered off since then.
Wrecked was about a diverse group of airplane passengers stranded on an uninhabited island, a dangerous new world where they must face many threats – mostly brought on by themselves. No longer plugged into the rest of the world, the group struggled to navigate their makeshift society while also learning to live without such modern comforts as indoor plumbing, wi-fi, social media and Chipotle.

In today’s film news roundup, Dermot Mulroney will play a meth head, production wraps on the transgender drama “Relish,” and Tom Everett Scott’s “Danger One” gets a release.
Castings
Dermot Mulroney and Melora Walters have joined the music-inspired independent feature “Hard Luck Love Song” opposite Sophia Bush and Michael Dorman, Variety has learned exclusively.
Commercial director Justin Corsbie will helm from a script he wrote with Nicholl semifinalist Craig Ugoretz, based on the Todd Snider song “Just Like Old Times.” Allison Smith, Douglas Matejka, and Corsbie are producing; executive producers are Peter Scalettar and Christian Monti.
“Hard Luck Love Song” follows Dorman’s down-on-his-luck troubadour, who finds himself at an existential crossroads as his bad decisions catch up with him. His world spins into further upheaval after a chance encounter with an old flame, played by Bush.
Mulroney’s character is a sketchy meth head with a dangerous side.

When we were asked to beautiful Marina Del Rey, California to hang out on a party barge with the cast of TBS’ Wrecked, we jumped at the chance—provided, that is, that we could ask them whatever silly questions we wanted. Given that the show is a comedy about a group of travelers stranded on a desert island, we figured we’d go with a tried and true query: What would Brian Sacca, Brooke Dillman, and Ally Maki choose, collectively, if they could only bring five movies to a desert island? The results range from the popular to the dark, with Sacca perhaps deliberately trying to throw a few wrenches into the ol’ desert island DVD collection.
Season two of Wrecked is airing now on TBS. You can catch up on the whole series on TBS.com.

Although he has spent years in the entertainment industry, Sacca has only recently begun to achieve widespread recognition through his acting in productions like The Wolf of Wall Street and Wrecked.
