Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man is heading to the big screen courtesy of Dreamworks and Universal, here are the details.
Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, written by Nicholas Stoller and directed by David Soren, is one of the funniest, most delightful animated films of recent years. It even boasts a brilliant theme song by Weird Al Yankovic. The brief clad superhero ought to have had many more big screen adventures, but it wasn’t to be, although a short lived television series is still available to watch on Netflix.
Back in 2020, we heard that author Dav Pilkey’s other hit novel series Dog Man was heading to the big screen. The series consists of 11 books, with the 12th due to be published in March, and has sold over 60 million copies. We finally have some more concrete details about the film, which is nearing completion.

Universal Pictures on Monday afternoon unveiled Dog Man, an animated feature adaptation of the beloved book series by Dav Pilkey — the author-illustrator best known for his enduringly popular kids’ graphic novel series Captain Underpants. Dog Man has been slated by the studio to open wide on Friday, January 31, 2025.
Previously on the release schedule as Untitled DreamWorks Animation Film, the movie has no competitors yet on the release calendar as it looks to its first weekend in theaters.
Directed by Emmy winner Peter Hastings (The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants), Dog Man‘s plot is thrust into motion when a dog and a police officer are injured together on the job. A life-saving surgery thereafter changes the course of history when Dog Man is born. Half dog, half man, Dog Man is sworn to protect and serve — as long as he isn’t distracted by squirrels — as he doggedly pursues his...

The career of Adam Sandler has been frequently surprising. On "Saturday Night Live" in 1990, Sandler gained a reputation for playing a puckish, rude, doofus. It was a squeaky, occasionally explosive stage persona the actor would carry over into some of his mid-'90s comedy vehicles like "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore," and would go on to serve as the foundation of his production company. Any number of Sandler's comedy films are crass, prurient, and often venerate the bad behavior of their leads. Also, as a curious motif, Sandler's comedies often employ American pop culture iconography of the 1980s.
But then Sandler will occasionally startle audiences by proving himself as something beyond his usual "dip" persona. In "The Wedding Singer," Sandler emerged as a convincing romantic lead opposite Drew Barrymore. In "Punch-Drunk Love," director Paul Thomas Anderson tapped into Sandler's ever-present rage but balanced it with a truly disarming love story.

Production continues on the animated feature "Dog Man", adapting the 9-issue graphic novel title by writer/illustrator Dav Pilkey, from DreamWorks Animation, directed by Peter Hastings ("Kung Fu Panda"):
"...'Officer Knight' and his dog 'Greg', are both injured in an explosion. Knight is left brain dead, while Greg is paralyzed below the neck.
"Man and canine are then combined into 'Dog Man', with a man's body and dog's head.
"Assuming the superhero identity 'The Bark Knight', Dog Man fights evildoers everywhere.
"Now there's a new breed of justice in town, and he's ready to sniff out criminals -- as soon as he stops chasing his own tail..."

A book that’s a spin-off of author Dav Pilkey’s popular Captain Underpants series will no longer be published by Scholastic, which also asked that copies in circulation at libraries and other distributors be returned.
In a statement, Scholastic said that it will no longer publish or distribute Pilkey’s 2010 graphic novel, The Adventures of Ook and Gluk: Kung-Fu Cavemen from the Future. It claimed the author supported the move.
“Together, we recognize that this book perpetuates passive racism. We are deeply sorry for this serious mistake,” the company said, without citing specifics.
“Scholastic has removed the book from our websites, stopped fulfillment of any orders (domestically or abroad), contacted our retail partners to explain why this book is no longer available, and sought a return of all inventory. We will take steps to inform schools and libraries who may still have this title in circulation of our decision to withdraw it from publication.

Exclusive: Captain Underpants director David Soren tells us about the homage to Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia that was cut from the film.
Mild spoilers for Captain Underpants lie ahead
Regular readers of this site will know of our love for the Captain Underpants film, that arrived in cinemas last summer. It’s a terrific adaptation of Dav Pilkey’s books, and a genuinely very funny family movie. As such, it didn’t do anywhere near as well as it deserved at the box office, and come the Oscar nominations, let’s just say one or two ‘less good’ movies took the spot that Underpants surely deserved.
I caught up with the film’s director, David Soren, a week or two back to discuss the movie post-release, and he filled me on a sequence that never made it to the final film. A sequence that would have been a...

“Captain Underpants” turned out to be one of the animated surprises of the year as DreamWorks’ cheapest, most unconventional feature (outsourced to Canada and made for $38 million). Adapted from Dav Pilkey’s popular children’s books, it was a stripped down, comic strip of a movie that didn’t talk down to kids or adults and took all sorts of quirky chances.
It revolves around two fourth-grade pranksters, George (Kevin Hart) and Harold (Thomas Middleditch), who create comic books about a a superhero named Captain Underpants and hypnotize their principal, Mr. Krupp (Ed Helms), into becoming their superhero when he separates them.
An Experiment in Cost-Cutting and Outsourcing
As a result of cost-cutting and reorganization in 2015, DreamWorks outsourced to Technicolor-owned Mikros Image in Montreal (“The Little Prince,” “Mune: Guardian of the Moon”). “It came about because the resources at the studio were on to other movies [‘Trolls’ and ‘Boss Baby’],” said producer Mireille Soria.

Netflix and Dreamworks Animation have announced that they have a new slate of animated series projects in development that are set to launch next year. One of the most exciting projects that came with the announcement includes a revival of the classic 80s series She-Ra: Princess of Power!
I hope that the series turns out to be good. I think it's something that my girls are going to love. I'm sure most of you are familiar with She-Ra, but if not, she is also known as Princess Adora and is the twin sister of Prince Adam a.k.a. He-Man. She was kidnapped as a baby by the Horde's leader Hordak. She is eventually given the Sword of Protection, which parallels He-Man's Sword of Power, gaining the power to transform into She-Ra.

In the late 1990s, Dav Pilkey launched the first children’s novel of the Captain Underpants series—a series which would become tremendously popular among young readers. Despite the series’ acclaim, it has taken 20 years to see a big screen adaptation, largely because it took Pilkey that long to find someone with whom he could trust his beloved property. If Pilkey were to agree to a film adaptation, he surely couldn’t find a better director for the project than David…...

Box office challenges? Sure. But when was the last summer of movies as good as this one?
Look at the headlines surrounding the summer of movies that we’ve just had, and you could be forgiven for thinking doom and gloom has won. Box office is down, more major franchises have underperformed, and really good films have struggled to match the huge box office levels of movies in recent years.
And yet, in all the time we’ve been running this site – 10 years and counting – I’d contend we’ve not had a summer with as many really good big films as this one. Granted, in years gone by, there’s generally been two or three good movies – sometimes great ones - in the morass of two to three star fodder. But this year, six or seven films have really been of a high standard.

Bored with massive films and special effects? Then here are 10 smaller movies well worth your consideration...
It's that time of year when we usually give you a list of films playing in cinemas during August, as the summer blockbuster season winds down, that will help cleanse your palate after all the tentpoles and sequels that have proliferated throughout the year so far. But to be honest, this summer has been so good to us, we're more refreshed than usual.
Even aside from originals like Edgar Wright's Baby Driver and Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, this year's blockbusters have been of an unusually high standard. Wonder Woman pulled the Dceu out of its critical nosedive, War For The Planet Of The Apes is a gorgeous and emotional conclusion to the reboot trilogy, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 and Spider-Man: Homecoming proved that Marvel's ever expanding continuity is still going strong.

Captain Underpants is the family movie of the summer. Here's our review...
Unless you have fond memories of Dav Pilkey's series of books, it's entirely possible that Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie has tra-la-laaa'd its way into cinemas under your radar. Hopefully, you'll seek it out, because this is the funniest and most creative film to come out of DreamWorks Animation in a long time.
The imaginations fuelling the story are fourth-grade children George and Harold (voiced by Kevin Hart and Thomas Middleditch), who break up the monotony of their life at the unusually austere Jerome Horwitz Elementary School by drawing comics, playing pranks and generally trying to make each other laugh.
Their principal, Mr. Krupp (Ed Helms) hates them for it and on the brink of banishing them to separate classes, an unexpectedly powerful cereal box gift enables the boys to hypnotise him. He comes to believe...

This surprisingly nuanced animation intersperses lavatory humour with narrative invention
Although one of the foundations on which much children’s cinema was built, lavatory humour was always perceived as an inglorious last resort. Can’t think of a funny line? Have a character break wind instead. By this logic, Captain Underpants, a film almost entirely crafted out of lavatory humour, should be a soul-crushing, puerile slog. However, David Soren’s animation, which was adapted from the children’s books by Dav Pilkey, is a delightful surprise. It’s a celebration of friendship, of the boundless creativity of children’s minds. It’s a dizzily silly collection of sly cultural references. It’s visually inventive, narratively agile. And yes, it has fart gags.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Sweet, subversive, and absolutely hilarious, at once a snarky superhero sendup and an unironically joyful celebration of friendship and imagination. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of toilet humor
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
There is no bigger unfan of toilet humor than yours truly. So what the heck was I doing at a screening of a kiddie movie entitled Captain Underpants? Laughing my head off and being thoroughly charmed, to my very great surprise. I’m still trying to figure out precisely how this absolutely delightful little movie gets it right, but I’m zeroing in on how it somehow manages to engage a kindergarten-level sense of humor without pandering to it, and by mining huge glee out of its own amusement rather than what has generated that amusement.

"Tra-la-laaa!" … It's the somewhat non-sequitur battle cry of Dav Pilkey's superheroic creation, Captain Underpants, who will be enjoying his film debut with Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie on Friday. When the good Captain first came on the scene in 1997, he may have seemed a strange choice for a children's book series. After all, the concept of a grown man running around in his underwear practically screams "stranger danger!"
However, let's not forget that underwear has always been a fixture of classic superhero garb, resting comfortably over the tights of Batman, Aquaman and Superman — while...

There’s no question that – despite the timeless Marvel vs. DC debate (or perhaps because of it?) – superhero cinema is here to stay for a long time. The recent releases of such critically acclaimed efforts as Logan and this week’s Wonder Woman, however, underscore the genre’s need to explore some fresh approaches to comic book storytelling, lest the million think pieces heralding the cinematic fall of superheroes come to fruition. So, while adults looking to satisfy their bloodlust can see Hugh Jackman shredding off limbs in the aforementioned latest X-Men film, children can root for a decidedly less self-serious hero in Dreamworks’ latest release, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie.
Based on the 12-book series by author Dav Pilkey, the film follows elementary school students George (Kevin Hart) and Harold (Thomas Middleditch), who stumble upon the perfect way to keep their school’s notorious Principal Krupp (Ed Helms...

Given DreamWorks Animation’s track record with adapting children’s books to film (most recently in The Boss Baby), the appealingly silly Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie counts as a pleasant surprise. Translating the kid logic and chunky art style of Dav Pilkey’s popular series into the fineries of digital animation, it tells of a couple of prank-playing fourth-graders, George (Kevin Hart) and Harold (Thomas Middleditch), who use a plastic ring from a cereal box to hypnotize their tyrannical elementary-school principal, Mr. Krupp (Ed Helms), into believing that he is the briefs-clad hero of their hand-drawn comic books. A quick snap of the fingers transforms Krupp into a klutzy do-gooder, while a splash of water turns him back into his normal, grumpy self—an idea for which the movie never really finds a use, beyond a trip through a carnival rife with aquatic hazards. But what good does...

A new trailer just dropped for Dunkirk and it packs a punch! Dunkirk will tell the story of allied soldiers during World War II who are attempting to be evacuated from a beach surrounded by enemies. If this doesn’t sound like the war movie that film-lovers’ dreams are made of, then we don’t know what does. Move over Spider-Man. Hop it Bats. Get lost Guardians. There’s a new superhero in town, and his name is Captain Underpants. Adapted from the bestselling children’s books by Dav Pilkey, Captain Underpants is the alter-ego of Principal Krupp, the overweight and cruel leader of Jerome Horwitz Elementary School. He hates children and delights in their misery, so in retaliation, two students hypnotize him and inadvertently turn him into the titular hero.
This new clip from the upcoming Dreamworks CG adaptation, which goes by the mouthful of a title Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, shows that very moment, with the boys amused and aghast at the clumsy, foolhardy creature they’ve created. Now, seasoned superhero fans might be rolling their eyes at this, but in a certain light, isn’t an underpants-wearing principal just as sensible as a radioactive spider dude, or a rich boy dressing up as a bat?...

Based on the series of children’s novels by Dav Pilkey, Dreamworks Animation are bringing Captain Underpants to the big screen, and the first trailer shows is here to let us know what we’re in for. Setting it’s sights clearly on skewing the super hero genre, while also being a super hero movie in it’s own right, the movie concerns two fourth grade pranksters (Tom Middleditch and Kevin Hart) who trick their overbearing principal (Ed Helms) into thinking he’s a caped crusader, Captain Underpants. Running around in just his underwear and a curtain turned cape, he attempts to fight crime while having no real powers or crime fighting skills to speak of. Captain Underpants looks to be a hell of a lot of fun, with the cutesy, stylised animation (based on Pilkey’s own drawings) actually looking quite gorgeous in some places. On top of that,...

"You are now the amazing Captain Underpants!!" 20th Century Fox has unveiled an official trailer for the animated Captain Underpants movie, titled in full - Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. This is based on the very popular books by Dav Pilkey about two mischievous kids who hypnotize their mean elementary school principal and turn him into their comic book creation, the kind-hearted and elastic-banded Captain Underpants. Kevin Hart voices George, and Thomas Middleditch voices Harold, with Ed Helms voicing their principal. Also featuring Nick Kroll, Jordan Peele and Kristen Schaal. As fun as this looks in a few scenes, DreamWorks tends to focus too much on the goofy comedy, and not enough on the story or characters. I'm sure it will be good for kids, but this doesn't seem like the big hit of the summer. Here's the first trailer for David Soren's Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie,...

Throughout the years I have seen a lot of my favorite books as a child be transformed into either live or animated film adaptation which has been fun to see. Some that come to mind as I write this is Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs and Holes. This year DreamWorks Animation is bringing yet another one of these children's series to life, the mighty Captain Underpants.
The Adventures of Captain Underpants was written by American author and illustrator Dav Pilkey. The series is so popular it has sold over 70 million books worldwide. The story follow two kids George and Harold who hypnotize their mean principle Mr. Krupp. This accidentally turns him into their homemade comic book hero Captain Underpants, he later gains superpowers. The series concluded in 2015 with it's twelfth book and will soon come big screens everywhere this summer.
The film is titled Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie.

You’ve heard of Captain America and Captain Marvel – heck, you’re probably even familiar with Captain Fantastic thanks to Viggo Mortensen – but what about Captain Underpants?
Due to screen in front of Lionsgate’s Power Rangers movie this coming weekend – for those in the States and Canada, at least – we now have our first look at David Soren’s (Turbo) animated pic in action. Hatched as a collaboration between DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox, Captain Underpants plucks Dav Pilkey’s wonderfully wacky cast of characters and catapults them onto the big screen in style.
Ed Helms, best known for his roles in The Office and The Hangover franchise, lends his voice to the title role, and is flanked by an all-star cast comprised of Kevin Hart (Jumanji), Thomas Middleditch, Nick Kroll as villainous Professor Poopypants and Jordan Peele, the creative mind behind horror hit Get Out, as nerdy tattletale Melvin Sneedly.

It’s surreal to know we’re getting a Captain Underpants movie later this year. At least, it is for me. As a child who once obsessed over Dav Pilkey’s gleefully juvenile book series, it swells my old(er) heart to know we’re finally going to see these wacky, zany characters make their way onto the screen. While we’re heard little about the project thus far, DreamWorks Animation will soon ring out their promotional bandwagon, starting with today’s first poster, which might remind you of another superhero, one who’ll also get his own animated movie later this month.

2017 is going to be packed to the brim with superhero movies. You’ve got Wonder Woman, Logan, Justice League and Spider-Man: Homecoming to name but a few. But buried beneath all those massive tentpoles you’ve also got another superhero film, albeit a very different one.
We’re talking about DreamWorks Animation’s Captain Underpants. While the titular character may not have quite as large a fanbase as some of those aforementioned heroes, there’s still a lot of people who are eagerly anticipating his big screen debut. And now, thanks to EW, we have our first look at the film – which you can check out up above.
