★★★★☆ Consciously attempting to remedy British cinema's dirge of contemporary war films, outshone as they usually are by the superior American model, Kajaki (2014), the feature debut of Paul Katis, is a retelling of a harrowing true story that is notable both for its brutality and outstanding bravery. With a script developed by Katis and screenwriter Tom Williams, and based on extensive interviews with the surviving soldiers involved in the events, the film is an expertly crafted commemoration that focuses on the War on Terror in nightmarish microcosm. Set in 2006, the film sees a group of soldiers from the British Army's 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment [3 Para], who are stationed at the Kajaki Dam in Afghanistan.

In 2006, a group of British soldiers in Afghanistan, while on a routine patrol mission, stumbled across a dry river bed that, to their horror, turned out to be a mine field. With one of their comrades already falling victim to a mine, the rest of the soldiers banded together to make sure everybody survived, even as more of them began to fall to the explosives hidden beneath their feet. Kajaki, named after the strategically important dam the soldiers are stationed, isn't concerned with the gung-ho spirit of most war movies, instead being a much more grounded, character driven affair, exploring the brotherhood and horror born from the situation this handful of soldiers find themselves in. The actual conflict is always kept at arms length, usually observed through a rifle scope. The first act is superbly crafted as director Paul Katis and screen writer Tom Williams (Chalet Girl) take their time introducing our protagonists,...

A fiercely British comedy, Michael checks out Chalet Girl, and finds a film that might just have overstretched itself...
While we're all getting into a patriotic froth over The King's Speech, and the hefty sum granted to its production by the soon to be defunct UK Film Council, perhaps it's best to see where else its money is going.
Out this week is Chalet Girl, a British comedy that was boosted by a £800,000 stimulus from the UKFC. Like Tom Hooper's awards-winner, it is fiercely British, and casts its gaze over one of the nation's pet obsessions, class.
Bright young thing Felicity Jones stars as Kim, a grungy teen whose promising career as a professional skateboarder is put on hold after the untimely death of her mother. Stuck in a dead-end job, at Chicken Cottage, no less, Kim must scrounge in order to support her grieving father (Bill Bailey), and...

Chalet Girl is an against-all-odds film in just about every sense imaginable. It’s not just that the protagonist, Kim (Felicity Jones) is a former skateboarding prodigy reduced to working menial jobs to support her depressed dad (Bill Bailey) following the death of her mother. Nor that she then manages to get a well-paid job tending Chalets in the Alps despite not being a posh girl called Petronella. Nor even that she then learns to snowboard and starts a budding romance with a rich investment banker (Ed Westwick). Nope, the overcoming of odds runs deep within this film’s DNA.
For a start, who would have thought a film about an ordinary London lass becoming a chalet girl (for those of you who don’t know, a chalet girl is a maid in fancy skiing lodges, or chalets) could get funded and made? Especially since the...

I better caveat this post before I say anything else by saying that if you’re a keen skier and for whatever reason, aren’t going to go away this season, after watching the trailer that Jon posted a few days ago you’ll very much want to go! I know as I’m very much in that boat!
Chalet Girl looks like one of those rom-coms which will have the same ending as all the rest of them but it probably won’t stop me watching it! The movie is written by Tom Williams, Produced by Wolfgang Behr, Pippa Cross, Dietmar Güntsche, Harriet Rees, directed by Phil Traill and stars Felicity Jones and Tamsin Egerton, Sophia Bush, Brooke Shields, Bill Nighy al with Ed Westwick from Gossip Girl.

A host of young British talent including Ed Westwick, Tamsin Egerton and Georgia King, star in Chalet Girl, an ice cool comedy filled with laughter, romance and kick-ass snowboarding.
Felicity Jones plays feisty 19 year old Kim Matthews who takes on the challenge of her life when she lands a job as a chalet girl in a glitzy ski resort in the Alps.
Assigned to live and work in the luxury chalet of successful businessman Richard Masden (Bill Nighy), she spends her days cooking, cleaning and catering for his family. Propelled into a world of wealth, fun and endless parties, Kim is utterly baffled by this new way of life. Finding it hard to grasp all the rules and be accepted by her uber-posh co-worker Georgie, played by 21 year old Tamsin Egerton (currently filming Camelot) , she quickly finds herself way out of her depth. Georgia King (Tanner Hall) plays Jules, Georgie's privileged and overindulged best friend.

Exclusive: The London-based producer has started talking to Hollywood agents about directors for Exit Point, a Base jumping action thriller written by Tom Williams (Chalet Girl) and award-winning Sunday Times journalist Ed Caesar. Constance Media hopes to shoot summer 2011 in the UK, France, Norway and United Arab Emirates. Naghdi is pitching this heist movie as “Man On Wire meets Point Break.” Base jumping is the extreme sport of jumping off a skyscraper wearing a parachute. Caesar’s original Sunday Times Magazine article told how two men broke into the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, and base-jumped 155 floors down. Williams and Caesar are repped by Sean Gascoine at United Agents. Naghdi tells me: “Nobody’s done a Base jumping thriller before. When the Europeans do thrillers properly, we do them really well.” Naghdi used to be an entertainment lawyer at City law firm Bird & Bird, where his clients included Woody Allen.
