Taking over a family business can be overwhelming, but for Karan Johar, it’s been anything but.
It’s been more than 25 years since Johar took over Dharma Prods. founded by his father, Yash. Back then it was a medium-sized production company producing films to moderate reception. Today, Dharma Prods. is an empire. “Karan has truly carried forward his father’s legacy and created a phenomenon with Dharma Prods. He is a cinematic genius,” says actor Alia Bhatt.
Bhatt has worked with Johar for over a decade, first on the 2012 film “Student of the Year” and most recently on “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani.” “Karan and his entire team at Dharma have been a strong pillar in the evolution of Hindi cinema,” says Bhatt.
This summer, Johar’s film “Kill” will be released domestically by Lionsgate in cinemas on the July 4 weekend, and is set to be released July 5 in India.

Indian director-producer Karan Johar wrapped up the conference section of the first Cinevesture International Film Festival with a lively conversation that ranged from working with the right people and Bollywood’s shifting gender politics, to letting slip a few new projects from his Dharma Productions slate.
Johar, who’s having a busy year as a producer with Love Storiyaan on Prime Video and Showtime on Disney+ Hotstar, started the session by talking about how he surrounds himself with people “who know all facets of cinema, not just the mainstream” – even if they’ve been outspoken critics of his work in the past.
He used the example of indie maverick Anurag Kashyap, and producer Somen Mishra, now head of content at Dharma and its Ott division Dharmatic Entertainment, who used to slate him on the popular ‘Passion of Cinema’ blog.

Long Live Brij Mohan alum Nikhil Nagesh Bhat is back again with another nerve-wracking thriller, Apurva. From what I have gathered from his films, Nikhil Nagesh likes to do things in a peculiar way. People often cite his way of picking up a very basic plot and turning it into a harrowing story that one won’t be able to put down. It would be a crime to call his movies basic, even though they play with the same run-of-the-mill, tried-and-tested themes of deceit, love, betrayal, crime, and violence. But the way he changes it into an exciting film is a secret sauce that he isn’t keen on sharing. In layman’s terms, Nagesh’s latest work, Apurva, is a crime-thriller gone right.

En route she gets abducted by a gang comprising of Jugnu Bhaiya (Rajpal Yadav), Sukha (Abhishek Banerjee), Sumit Gulati & Aaditya Gupta.
Apurva is dumped in a car to a deserted location and thrown in a standalone locomotive carriage, the gang’s makeshift address. Abhishek Banerjee, who will soon be seen in a negative role in the film ‘Apurva’, has revealed how his first film ‘Stree’ was a huge risk in his career. Abhishek Banerjee wowed everyone with his performance in ‘Stree’, and now he will be seen in a dark shade in the upcoming film ‘Apurva’.
Talking about that one film where he was ready to take a risk in his career, he said: “Stree, my first film was a huge risk. It was difficult to play that character and not make it over the top caricaturish. It could have easily happened with that character, to keep it real and believable but to add elements of horror and comedy was risky.”
Before doing this film, I had done an Indie film ‘Ajji’ and on the first day of the shoot, our director Amar Kaushik told me in front of everyone that I need to come out of Ajji.

Dishing out a great love song prior to the coming of Diwali, actress Tara Sutaria’s upcoming movie ‘Apurva’ has unleashed its new single ‘Diwali’. An extremely melodic and romantic song, ‘Diwali’ is the go-to romance love anthem with its beautiful lights and soulful melodies.
Singer-composer Vishal Mishra has dished out a solid performance, as his vocals shine brilliantly with his composition.
A typical Bollywood romance masala flair ‘Diwali’ exudes a passionate, heartfelt, and very real love, though it is also extremely misleading as it is just showcasing the rainbow sparkle before the bleak darkness of the film actually comes.
Musically, it is produced extremely well, the instrumentation is very well done, and the composition fuses in both pop and folk thus making it a very mainstream song.
Packed with powerful and enchanting visuals, ‘Diwali’ celebrates both the festival of lights with sincerity, as well as perfectly misleads the viewers...

Lionsgate has partnered with Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment to grab distribution rights in North America and the UK for the Indian actioner “Kill.”
While Indian films have played in North American theaters regularly, often in semi-wide or wide releases, it’s much less common for a major Hollywood studio to participate stateside. In fact, this is the first for a Hindi-language feature.
The Hindi-language flick, due for theatrical release in 2024, can be loosely described as “Die Hard on a train,” with the lone wolf hero (Lakshya) doing his best to dispatch the bandits (led by Raghav Juyal) so he can complete his journey to save his beloved (Tanya Maniktala) from an arranged marriage.
Directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat, “Kill” is produced by Karan Johar & Apoorva Mehta for Dharma Productions and Guneet Monga Kapoor & Achin Jain for Sikhya Entertainment. The picture made its acclaimed premiere at TIFF as a Midnight Madness selection,...

Years ago, Indian director Nikhil Nagesh Bhat fell asleep on a cross-country train ride, only to discover upon reaching his destination that the cars on either side of his had been robbed by armed bandits, known as “dacoits.” The heist couldn’t have been too intense, or it would have awakened him, but it got the helmer’s gears turning about what a truly terrifying train raid might look like. The answer: “Kill,” in which a crew of 40-odd thieves board a train, intending to steal passengers’ watches and phones, then turn bloodthirsty after running into a pair of hardheaded commandos.
As brutal a film as the country has ever produced, “Kill” is a shockingly graphic action showcase from an industry that typically plays violence in a more cartoony register. All told, “Overkill” probably would have been a better title, considering how far Bhat takes each and every altercation, milking it for maximum vengeance.

Says Raghav, “I am truly humbled and grateful for the overwhelming response to my portrayal in ‘Kill.’ It’s an honour to be recognized as the Villain of the Year, and I’m immensely thankful to the audience and critics for their support. Bringing...

“American Fiction,” Cord Jefferson’s blistering satire of race and media, captured the Toronto International Film Festival’s people’s choice award, bolstering its Oscars chances.
TIFF’s people’s choice award is considered to be among the best predictors of eventual awards success, though the 2023 festival hosted a weaker lineup than most years due to the writers and actors strikes that saw some prominent contenders skip a Canadian premiere. In the past, winners of the prize such as “Green Book,” “12 Years a Slave” and “Nomadland” went on to be named best picture at the Academy Awards. Other recipients, including “Belfast,” “La La Land,” “Jojo Rabbit,” and 2022’s winner, “The Fabelmans,” were all best picture nominees.
The people’s choice category was created in 1978. Seven recipients won best picture at the Oscars, with five of those victories coming in the past two decades.

Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction picked up the top People’s Choice honor Sunday at the Toronto Film Festival, which wrapped up a 48th edition with little Hollywood star wattage amid the uncertainty of dual Hollywood strikes.
Jefferson’s feature directorial debut, an adaptation for Orion of Percival Everett’s 2001 novel Erasure, had its world premiere in Toronto at the Princess Alexandra Theatre on Sept. 8. MRC is the film’s studio and financier.
The American drama about U.S. racial dynamics portrays a Black academic, played by Jeffrey Wright, who grows frustrated that the only “Black books” that seem to find a wide (and white) audience are those that tread on stereotypes.
“My gratitude towards everyone who watched American Fiction [and] discussed it afterwards among friends and colleagues is endless. The film is now in your hands, and I’m so grateful that it was embraced in this way,” Jefferson said in a statement Sunday morning.

“American Fiction” has won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, TIFF organizers announced at an awards brunch on Sunday.
The Orion/MGM film by first-time director Cord Jefferson is a barbed satire that stars Jeffrey Wright as a writer who, to his dismay, achieves enormous success after as a joke writing a book filled with what he feels are the worst and most pandering cliches of Black representation. In its review, TheWrap called the film “an outlandishly assured directorial debut, a beautifully modulated film that takes a great actor, Jeffrey Wright, and gives him a spectacular showcase.”
While the film did not come into the festival as one of its highest profile selections, it was an immediate sensation after its Friday night premiere at the Princess of Wales Theatre, drawing some of TIFF’s most positive reviews. It currently stands at 86% positive on Rotten Tomatoes...

The People’s Choice Award from the just-wrapped 2023 Toronto Film Festival has gone to Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction. First Runner-Up is Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers. Second Runner-Up is Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron. The Documentary Award goes to Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe, and the Midnight Madness winner is Dicks: The Musical.
Orion and MRC’s American Fiction stars Jeffrey Wright and comes from writer-director Jefferson. It is a scathing satire on the publishing industry and its treatment of serious works by Black writers, one whose name is Thelonious “Monk” Ellison. He travels back to his hometown of Boston to attend a book festival, but the turnout is low in favor of another book seminar with author Sintara Golden’s (Issa Rae) bestseller We Lives in Da Ghetto. It is scheduled to be released in theaters in November.

The lineup for Beyond Fest 2023 has been announced, and, as per usual, attendees will be in for a pretty incredible lineup of sci-fi classics, horror favorites, and more than 30 premieres. The event takes place from September 26th – October 10th.
With 55 features, Beyond Fest 2023 looks like a winner yet again. Some of the major attractions this year are special screenings of The Abyss (hopefully with news of a 4K Blu-ray?), Manhunter, Piranha, The Raven, and Pacific Rim, all with their directors – James Cameron, Michael Mann, Joe Dante, Roger Corman, and Guillermo del Toro – in attendance…and those are just some of the retro screenings! Fans might also want to try nabbing tickets for movies like folk-horror All You Need is Death, Cannes debuted Vincent Must Die, the remake of The Toxic Avenger, and so many more.
You can see the full lineup for the 2023 Beyond Fest below, complete with details on the premiere,...
