Ryan Murphy made headlines back in 2018 when the prolific producer of TV hits ranging from "Glee" to "American Horror Story" signed a massive content deal with Netflix, estimated at a record-breaking $300 million. Since then, Murphy and his collaborators have delivered a head-spinning array of projects for viewers of the streaming service, in addition to various shows for network television and the FX basic cable brand.
Known for audacious and outrageous plot twists, compelling characters, and assembling a repertory company comprised of some of Hollywood's finest actors, Murphy has managed to leave his imprint on everything he touches. Realistically speaking, Murphy has increasingly spread himself thin as he continues to pump out more and more television content within multiple genres. Though everything remains thoroughly on brand, not all of those projects achieve the same level of quality. Occasional stumbles are inevitable. With that in mind, read on for a roundup of...

This post contains spoilers for the season finale of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
Who knew that the spin-off cartoon from a writer/producer on "Rick and Morty" would be delivering some of the best modern "Star Trek" stories we've seen lately? As crass and silly "Star Trek: Lower Decks" can often be, the show has always been a genuine and loving attempt to capture the adventurous essence of the historic sci-fi franchise. But, wow. Season 3 of "Lower Decks" has raised the bar and may just be the best outing for the show yet.
Season 3 of "Lower Decks" wraps up with "The Stars at Night," which picks right up from the chaos we were left with last week. After Mariner (Tawny Newsome) was kicked off of the U.S.S. This post contains spoilers for the season finale of "Star Trek: Lower Decks."
At the end of last week's episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," called "Trusted Sources," Ensign Mariner (Tawney Newsome) infuriates Captain Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) and Mariner has to leave the ship in disgrace. Luckily, she seems to have had a second career already lined up: Tomb Raider. Mariner moves onto the ship of sexy maverick archaeologist Petra Aberdeen (Georgia King) and the two immediately go about plundering ancient, abandoned temples looking for statues and tchotchkes they can distribute to museums.
In the following episode, "The Stars at Night," Mariner begins to sense something is suspicious about Petra's setup. Most notably, Petra becomes cagey and evasive whenever Mariner asks her about who is financing her operation. In a cute nod to Trek's post-capitalist utopia, Petra mocks Mariner for not knowing anything about what things cost. Eventually, Mariner uses...

In the latest episode of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," called "Reflections," Ensign Mariner (Tawny Newsome) is given the unenviable task of working a Starfleet recruitment booth at what is essentially a sci-fi jobs bazaar. It's hard enough to make Starfleet seem appealing to passersby who only want sit on the bridge of a starship, but Mariner's job is made all the more frustrating by the person in the booth next door to hers. Whenever Mariner makes a sales pitch, the roguish and dazzling Petra Aberdeen (Georgia King) points out that Starfleet vessels are typically full of boring, windowless rooms and mundane technical jobs. The only thing that breaks up the monotony, she indicates, is when you're assimilated by the Borg. She, meanwhile, offers passersby a job in the Independent Archaeologists Guild, an organization devoted to tomb raiding and spelunking and looking cool.

Ben Barnes is celebrating a milestone birthday with some help from his famous friends.
Best known for his acting roles in Shadow and Bone, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, The Punisher and Westworld, Barnes is using the occasion of his 40th birthday to finally release the music that he’s talked about for years. It comes together on the five-song EP Songs For You.
To augment the sounds with video, he enlisted Westwold costar Evan Rachel Wood for his 11:11 video, and now has his The Punisher costar, Floriana Lima, in his latest, Rise Up, released today, with the official EP bowing tomorrow. The new video was directed by actress Georgia King (Dev and The New Normal).
Why now?
“I think the last 18 months has made us all question what’s important to us,” Barnes said. “What our priorities are, and what we’d like to spend our time...

“That lady is wearing a wig!” is the first thought that comes to me at the start of Parallel… Shortly thereafter, the film throws up an interesting conceit and, aside from the wig, this film is extremely professionally made. It is a sci-fi mind bender with similar ambition to Looper.
A group of friends have created a parking app, and they are trying to seal the big deal, but it all goes wrong, and they lose out. The banter among the gang is believable and funny. The characters are likable and believable as people. There is a bouncy, fun, Ocean’s 11 vibe to a lot of the gang’s hijinks.

Seattle housemates find portal to parallel universes and only seem interested in using it to cash in
Arthur C Clarke once said that there are two possibilities. Either we are alone in the universe or we are not: both are terrifying. But the funny thing in this sci-fi thriller – about parallel universes rather than alien lifeforms – is quite how unterrified, or even awestruck, these four Seattle housemates are when a mirror in their attic turns out to be a portal to a “multiverse” of alternate realities. They barely pause to register the uncanny weirdness of bumping into versions of themselves. Nope, they move straight on to the important matter of making money.
What they discover is that the parallel universes (or “alts” as they call them) tick along much like our world: same major events but with slight divergences, particularly in industries like art and tech. “Look, Mona Lisa’s hair is short!

A certain odd feeling probably crossed your mind as you’re dashing past a building. You might still experience this occasionally. That is if the building sports a glass front entrance or window. Catching your reflection, you might first think,” Ugh, bad hair day” or “ I’d better just have a salad for lunch.”. But if you’re not in a mad hurry you may wonder if you’ve got an exact twin somewhere. Or taking it further, what if there’s another “me” in an almost identical “now”. And is this reflection a window into that duplicate world? That’s an idea that’s been explored in many fantasy anthology TV shows, though an even more famous use of that idea was on the original “Star Trek” TV show, you know the one with an evil Spock sporting a sinister goatee. Now that notion is taken up a few...

Some things you should never do. Go back in the water when the local mayor declares the shark nothing to worry about. Stay in the kitchen while your best friends head off to track down the knife-wielding maniac. Or, in my own case, agree to watch (and review) any film with horror in the write-up. Because horror and I are not good bedfellows.
Occasionally, though, I allow my optimism to get the better of me and…I dare! Which is why I ended up watching Parallel. This tells the story of four millennials, Noel (Martin Wallström from Mr. Robot), Devin (Aml Ameen from I May Destroy You), Leena (Georgia King from Devs) and Josh (Mark O’Brien from Ready Or Not). Under intense time pressure to deliver on an It project, they find a strange mirror in a hidden attic. How strange? Well, the mirror is a doorway: a portal to another parallel.

"This is the biggest unfair advantage in human history." Vertical Ent. has released an official trailer for a sci-fi thriller titled Parallel, from filmmaker Isaac Ezban. This originally premiered in 2018 at all the fall genre fests: FrightFest, Morbido, Sitges, Utopia, and a few others including Fantasia in Montreal. A group of friends stumble upon a mirror that serves as a portal to a "multiverse", but soon discover that importing knowledge from the other side in order to better their lives brings increasingly dangerous consequences. Whod've thought?! The film stars Aml Ameen, Martin Wallström, Georgia King, Mark O’Brien, Alyssa Diaz, with David Harewood and Kathleen Quinlan. I dig the setup and the intro to the parallel universe, but I'm worried it will get really cheesy when bad things start happening. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Isaac Ezban's Parallel, direct from Vertical's YouTube: A group of friends stumble upon...

Being “nice” can sometimes be a backhanded compliment. A romantic film, one seeking to warm an audience’s heart, usually doesn’t have too much of an edge. There’s nothing wrong with being “nice,” especially when the material calls for it. However, when you wind up with something that’s only “nice” and doesn’t offer up anything else, it leaves you lacking. The Lost Husband is a prime example of this. Sure, it’s pleasant and has its heart in the right place, but that doesn’t mean that the end result isn’t bland and without narrative thrust. On Demand this weekend, it’s a harmless offering that nonetheless leaves you wanting more. This flick is a romance, introducing us to Libby (Leslie Bibb) a short time after the sudden death of her husband. Unhappy in her current situation, stuck living with her mother, Libby is offered...

"This kind of pain and loss, it cracks you open... But we are made of magic and resilience, Libby." Quiver Distr. has debuted an official trailer for an indie romantic drama titled The Lost Husband, a feature film adapted from the novel of the same name by Katherine Center. Trying to put her life back together after the death of her husband, Libby and her children move to her estranged aunt's goat farm in central Texas. There she falls in with a "gruff farm manager with a tragic past" and, of course, starts to enjoy the country life. Leslie Bibb stars, along with Josh Duhamel, and also Sharon Lawrence, Kevin Alejandro, Georgia King, Carly Pope, Herizen F. Guardiola, Nora Dunn, and Isiah Whitlock Jr. This looks exactly like the country livin', charming, sweet farm romance you'd expect it to look like, which is a good thing this time. Here's the...

Ahead of the UK premiere screening of Parallel at Arrow Video FrightFest Halloween – which takes place at Cineworld, Leicester Square on November 3rd 2018, director Isaac Ezban discusses the film, making his first English-language feature and directing from someone else’s script.
Parallel is the first film you didn’t write yourself (Scott Blaszak did) but it feels so like one from your heart – dealing with the ramifications of identity, life-shattering decision-making and the possibilities of an endless universe as also explored in The Incident and The Similars?
Yes, that its right, I had many firsts on this one: first movie in English, first movie outside of my country with a completely new crew, first studio film, first film in Canada, and first film I didn´t write, and all those firsts added up to an amazing experience. After The Incident and The Similars, I really had the curiosity to do sci-fi in English,...

A group of enterprising app developers are doing their best to get a new parking app off the ground but when their pitch meeting ends with a request for delivery the team simply can't meet, it looks like their dreams of being the next big thing are dashed.
After a night of drinking that leads to a brawl in the laundry room of their shared work/living space, the group finds a hidden set of stairs to an attic they never knew existed and from there, a mirror that turns out to be the gateway to parallel universes.
And so Parallel follows the group, led by Noel (Martin Wallstrom of "Mr. Robot" fame), as they develop a plan to finish the app in time for delivery and once delivered, the group, which includes Josh (Mark O'Brien), Leena (Georgia King) and Devin (Aml Ameen), set of...

The school bell at North Jackson High rang for the last time Sunday as Vice Principals‘ brief-by-design two-season run came to a violent, bloody, riotous conclusion on HBO.
To quickly recap: After being unmasked as Gamby’s (co-creator/star Danny McBride) shooter, Ms. Abbott (the uproariously warped Edi Patterson) went on a gun-toting, fists-flying rampage, wounding both Russell (Walton Goggins) and Snodgrass (Georgia King) before letting loose an actual tiger on school grounds. The mascot ended up feasting on an already-wounded Russell, leaving him partially disfigured.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Vice Principals” Season 2, Episode 9, “The Union of the Wizard and the Warrior” — the series finale.]
Danny McBride’s return to HBO was always designed as a brief comeback. His follow-up to “Eastbound and Down” was shot all at once with longtime collaborators Jody Hill and David Gordon Green, meaning the Season 2 finale, which premiered Sunday night on HBO, has been sitting in the can for some time. Knowing this, it feels safe to assume the two-season series wasn’t trying to be a timely satirization of flaws within America’s school system or offer commentary on cultural insensitivities in small towns.
For the most part, it was neither. It was just pretty damn funny. And sometimes, including the finale, it was wildly, hilariously, hysterical.
After the incredible fallout last week, when McBride’s Neal Gamby accused Walton Goggins’ Lee of shooting him and the two destroyed the school in a knock-down, drag-out fight, it seemed hard to imagine how they’d come together — and how...

Sneak Peek new footage, plus images from the comedy TV series "Vice Principals", starring Danny McBride, Walton Goggins, Georgia King, Busy Philipps, Kimberly Hebert Gregory, Sheaun McKinney and Shea Whigham, premiering September 17, 2017 on HBO:
"...'Vice Principals' focuses on ill-tempered, dogmatic and disliked vice principal of 'North Jackson High School', 'Mr. Neil Gamby' (McBride), and his ambitions of being promoted to the principal's chair when the principal is due to step down.
"However, when the current principal (Bill Murray) retires, he reveals that he trusts neither Gamby nor his scheming and seemingly sociopathic co-vice principal 'Lee Russell' (Goggins), and so has recommended neither of them as his successor; instead, outsider 'Dr. Belinda Brown' (Gregory) is hired.
"When Gamby's attempt to get the school faculty to veto the appointment backfires, he conspires with Russell to find some way of ruining Brown's reputation and installing himself as principal..."

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best one-and-done show, a.k.a. a One-Season Wonder? (This refers to shows that only got one season and tragically did not get renewed, as opposed to limited series that never intended to continue.)
Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider
There are so many! But for me the best will always be “Freaks and Geeks.” It’s a show that I watched at an age before I really understood the whole TV renewal/cancellation process, but even then I knew it was unjustly short. The show was such a great blend of smarts, snark, and genuine emotions, in a way that could actually be painful to watch.

Hugh Jackman is done playing Wolverine. He certainly went out with a bang, as Logan is among the best comic book films I've seen. I know fans want nothing more then to see him face off against Deadpool in Deadpool 2. I know this, because I am one such fan. But it just doesn't look like it is in the cards, true believers. Sorry.
However, there may be a different way to bring Hugh Jackman into the Deadpool Universe, and the idea is clever as hell.
Heat Vision interviewed Deadpool 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick about their latest film Life, and in the process an intriguing idea came to light. Reporter Aaron Couch suggested to the writing pair that perhaps Hugh Jackman could make an appearance... as Hugh Jackman. Reese seemed to love the idea:
"Oh my gosh, that's one we haven't heard. That's not a bad idea.

If you've been following your Marvel news, then you've surely heard that Sony is rushing to get a stand-alone film made about Spider-Man's greatest adversary, Venom. The movie will be separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is shooting for an R-Rating as a potential sci-fi/horror film, and already has a release date of October 5, 2018, with production beginning as soon as this fall. Sony is hoping to launch a Spider-Man universe of their own and possibly a whole "VenomVerse."
The idea for a Venom film has been floating around Hollywood since the 2007 release of Spider-Man 3, the first and only live-action film to feature the character. Most recently, a Venom movie was thought to be a part The Amazing Spider-Man Universe which also included canceled projects such as The Sinister Six and The Amazing Spider-Man 3 & 4, all of which came crashing down after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had a lackluster box...
