Exclusive: After spending years taking subscribers behind bars at dangerous prisons, Netflix is applying the same formula to special forces.
The streamer has teamed up with the UK producer of Inside The World’s Toughest Prisons to create a new documentary series, titled Inside The World’s Toughest Forces.
Emporium Productions has gained access to special military forces around the world for the show, which will be anchored by a team of presenters. It has been filming this year and is currently in post-production.
Presented by journalist Raphael Rowe, Inside The World’s Toughest Prisons has streamed for six seasons on Netflix since 2016. It started life on Channel 5, the UK broadcaster owned by Paramount.
Emporium was set up in 2015 by Emma Read, who was previously head of factual programmes for Drug Lords producer ITN Productions. It is backed by Episodes producer Hat Trick Productions.
Netflix declined to comment.

The series: "Inside the World's Toughest Prisons"
Where you can stream it: Netflix
The pitch: Host Raphael Rowe knows a thing or two about life behind bars. After being convicted and sentenced to life in prison in the U.K. for a murder he didn't commit, he decided to start researching law and criminal justice. After 12 long years, he was able to prove his innocence, and shortly after he began working with the BBC's Channel 5 to create documentaries about crime, justice, and prison reform. Now, he travels the globe and goes inside of the world's toughest prisons to show the human side of some of society's most inhumane places. He spends a full week living with the most hardened criminals on their terms as a fellow prisoner, sharing their experiences with the world and reminding viewers that inmates are people.
There are plenty of exploitative reality shows about prisons out there,...

Raphael Rowe, like many other journalists, formally studied his craft and turned his passion for telling personal stories into a career as an investigative reporter, in the field of criminal justice. But his education occurred via correspondence in a maximum-security prison, where he was serving a life sentence for murder and aggravated robbery.
Sentenced at London’s Central Criminal Court in 1990 after being convicted at age 19, alongside two accomplices, for the 1988 murder of Peter Hurburgh, Rowe was labeled one of Britain’s most notorious killers. He was escorted by two guards and a dog every time he ...

Netflix is going behind bars. The streamer has ordered a new series of “Inside the World’s Toughest Prisons,” the factual series that looks inside notorious jails.
The Svod service acquired the earlier version of the show, which was commissioned for Viacom’s Channel 5 in the U.K. It then started talking to the producers of the series, London-based Emporium Productions, about how to work up new episodes as a global original for the Netflix audience.
A new presenter, Raphael Rowe, has been added. A journalist, he served 12 years in a high-security prison in the U.K. for a murder he did not commit. In the four-parter, he embeds himself with prisoners in each jail for a week, sharing a cell with real inmates and taking part in their daily lives while incarcerated. He also joins the guards to discover the tactics they adopt to keep the peace in these volatile environments.
