Yara Shahidi Reflects on Closing Out ‘Grown-ish’
Image
Taking cues from The Cosby Show’s iconic spinoff A Different World but updated for some 30 years later, Grown-ish, the Black-ish spawn premiered on Freeform in January 2018 by following Yara Shahidi’s Zoey Johnson, Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Bow’s (Tracee Ellis Ross) firstborn, to college. Similar to its predecessor, Grown-ish tackled many controversial topics, including university investment in the prison system, drug use, pre-nil exploitation of college athletes, sex, the value of college and more, but did so with a fresh voice and perspective.

Zoey’s college world included her competing love interests — woke Black campus activist Aaron (Trevor Jackson) and ultimate hipster Luca (Luka Sabbat) — as well as Latina Republican Ana (Francia Raìsa), Jewish rebel Nomi (Emily Arlook), first-generation Indian American and all-around hustler Vivek (Jordan Buhat), Olympic-bound South Los Angeles track stars Jazz and Sky (sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey, who perform the show’s theme song) and later,...

While the first four seasons followed Yara Shahidi's ("The Sun Is Also A Star") Zoey, the eldest daughter in the family until her graduation, the fifth season focuses on her brother Andre Junior (played by Marcus Scribner) and his time at the fictional California University of Liberal Arts -- the institution where his sister is regarded as a shining alumnus.

There aren't a lot of details on season 6 just yet, other than it will continue to focus on Junior and his ongoing collegiate misadventures. That said,...

"Grown-ish" is officially back with a refreshing new season filled with a handful of both familiar faces and new characters. Among the actors returning to the beloved sitcom is Diggy Simmons, known for his role as the charming, driven Doug Edwards in the series. As Doug, Simmons stars alongside Chloe Bailey, aka Jazz Forster, who was his love interest in "Grown-ish" up until season three.

Outside of his role on the sitcom, Simmons maintains a low profile on social media and keeps his personal and romantic life private. Ahead of his return to "Grown-ish" for season five, let's take a dive into who the actor has romanced over the years and his current relationship status.

Who Has Diggy Simmons Dated?

Why Most of the Original "Grown-ish" Cast Aren't in Season 5
Image
"Grown-ish" is finally returning for its fifth season on July 20, but this installment will look different in more ways than one. For starters, six original cast members who were part of Zoey's (Yara Shahidi) core group of Cal U buddies are bidding goodbye to the popular show. Season five of the Freeform coming-of-age comedy will follow a brand-new batch of freshmen. While we'll be reuniting with some "Grown-ish" favorites as season regulars - like Zoey, Trevor Jackson's Aaron, and Diggy Simmons's Doug (plus "Black-ish" star Marcus Scribner as Zoey's little brother Junior) - season four officially marks the end of an epic era for most of the original "Grown-ish" cast.

Showrunners Zakiyyah Alexander and Courtney Lilly shared with TVLine in March 2022 that while these beloved departing characters might not be the focus moving forward, there's always a possibility they might come back in future episodes. "Francia, Emily, Chlöe,...
