Just before kickoff in the New Orleans Saints’ divisional playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccanneers last week, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reported that Saints quarterback Drew Brees would retire after the season. The news forced an adjustment by the Fox team broadcasting the game. Speculation about Brees’ future had circulated all season long. But the new apparent certainty about that future would need to be addressed should the Saints lose, ending their season and Brees’ career. Once New Orleans fell behind by 10 points in the latter part of the fourth quarter, lead announcers Troy Aikman and Joe Buck turned their attention to Brees’ legacy.
“You’re sitting on that report the whole game,” Buck tells Variety. “Because the game was what it was, which was 10 points at the end, you can kind of start to pull the lid off that and get into it. But it’s a balance,...

The most unusual draft in NFL history avoided technical glitches in its early stages, as the streaming and broadcast teams of ESPN and ABC-tv managed to seamlessly integrate the numerous remote locations. These ranged from the top picks’ living rooms, to Commissioner Roger Goodell’s basement, to collages of various teams’ fans giving their reactions, and back to the studio.
While there were a few moments of stray people wandering into camera range and a couple instances of separated analysts stepping on each other, this remote version of the NFL draft was as compelling to watch as any any single-location format.

Philip Rivers home Rivers, who is very open about his faith and family, often talks about the importance of spending time with his wife and his nine children. Talk about a walk-off win: Fox Sports’ final “Thursday Night Football” game of the season was a big one, as the Los Angeles Chargers stunned the Kansas City Chiefs to take the lead with just four seconds left on the clock.
With very little primetime competition last night, Fox cruised to a very, very easy victory — very much unlike the one Philip Rivers orchestrated.
With Fox way in first, CBS finished a distant second on Thursday, airing some reruns, the “Mom” fall finale, and an original “Murphy Brown.”

Fox was first in ratings with a 3.3 rating/14 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 12.3 million, according to preliminary numbers.
CBS was second in ratings with a 0.8/4 and in viewers with 6.2 million. After a pair of repeats, “Mom” at 9 p.m. got a 1.2/5 and 7.7 million viewers.

In the kind of game that makes football fans proud of their devotion, it came down to the final minutes in last night’s matchup between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Kansas City Chiefs in the final Thursday Night Football of the season on Fox.
At the end, and after some verbal flubs by ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith before the game, the Chargers secured themselves a playoff perch after a comeback and a few brazen moves with a 29-28 victory.
In what was a determined team effort, much of the win was thanks to Chargers’ Qb Philip Rivers, as you can see below:

Each year, those of us who root for the NFL’s chronic losers approach the Super Bowl with a combination of disappointment and resignation. Since 2013, however, a YouTube channel run by an anonymous individual within the music adds a bit of levity to that mix. Bad Lip Reading has continued its esteemed annual tradition by providing its fifth NFL video in as many years.
As in Bad Lip Reading’s other NFL videos, the 2017 edition uses a combination of sideline chatter, post-game interviews, in-game player interviews, and on-field talk as its source materials. The resulting dubs are often startlingly plausible. Are we sure, for example, that Philip Rivers isn’t secretly a huge X-Files fan? The video evidence is pretty compelling.
At the time of this post, less than two hours after the video’s release, it already has more than 100,000 views.

Oh hi, reader. By now, you probably know the story of Tommy Wiseau's 2003 masterpiece/enigma/train wreck "The Room," a movie which took America by (s**t) storm, effortlessly and unprecedentedly transcending the notion that a bad movie had to merely be just "a bad movie" and not also "a tour-de-force that instantly makes your life better when you watch it."

The NFL announced its 2012 schedule Tuesday (April 17). It's way too extensive to print here, but the NFL has provided this handy week-by-week calendar/graphic that we found quite fun to peruse.
Here are some of the marquee match-ups:
Sunday, Sept. 9: Steelers at Broncos
Peyton Manning had been an Indianapolis Colt it seemed like, well, forever. But now on Sept. 9, he makes his debut as a Denver Bronco after losing the entire 2011 season to injury. The Steelers are known for their high-caliber defense, so it should be one to watch (provided Peyton is healthy and starting under center, of course).
Sunday, Oct. 7: Broncos at Patriots
Tom Brady and Manning have been two the best quarterbacks in the NFL for the past decade. In the 12 times they've faced off, Brady has beaten Manning eight of them. And the games are usually close ones. Should be a fun match-up.
