‘Montezuma’: Steven Spielberg next movie (or at least a Spielberg movie some time in the future)? Will Steven Spielberg next tackle the life and times of Aztec king Montezuma, from a screenplay by none other than former Hollywood Ten member Dalton Trumbo? If so, that won’t be the first time that Spielberg has adapted a Trumbo screenplay (more on that below). Anyhow, following Lincoln, which earned Spielberg his seventh Best Director Academy Award nomination, the Jaws, E.T., Schindler’s List, and Saving Private Ryan filmmaker has had his name attached to — and then detached from — a couple of projects. First, there was Drew Goddard’s adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson’s novel Robopocalypse, which isn’t a RoboCop spin-off but a sci-fier about a smart robot who reaches the (perfectly logical) conclusion that the only way to save the planet is to get rid of human beings. Robopocalypse,...

The CW jumped on the bandwagon of singing competition shows with their twist on the format. "The Next: Fame Is at Your Doorstep" (Thu., 9 p.m. Et) and immediately set itself from its contemporaries with a slowed down pace and heavy emphasis on personality. That is the personalities of both the contestants and the mentors.
There wasn't a lot of judging going on. Instead, the four superstar mentors would spend 72 hours prior to the big performance with each of four homegrown talents. That's the other twist on these show. The talent selected are people who've made an impact in their home communities, but haven't been able to break through on a national scale.
Those home visits led to some fun interactions, like Nelly selling sunglasses, Gloria Estefan mowing the lawn, Joe Jonas babysitting and John Rich ... sitting on a toilet singing with a guy who's in the shower. Yeah, that happened.

As part of the mentoring panel on The CW's new singing competition show The Next, country superstar John Rich prepares unknown artists for a live performance that could land them a deal with Atlantic Records. It's a lot of pressure on both the mentors and the singers, but the real experience comes in the 72 hours they spend together.
John sat down with Ology to talk about his experiences getting to know the talent and what we can expect to see on the show.

You’ve done a lot of reality television, what about this how made you want to get involved?
Well, it’s pretty simple for me. The real way an artist has a career is by experience, building your own audience, doing it the hard way, the old fashion way, earning it, you know? These are artists that have their own fans.

Inspired by the best-selling novel by Lisa See, this drama from the director of “The Joy Luck Club” spans centuries. In 19th-century China, 7-year-olds Snow Flower and Lily are matched as “laotong” — lifelong sisters. Isolated by their families, they furtively communicate by writing in a secret language in the folds of a white silk fan. Decades later in present-day Shanghai, the laotongs’ descendents struggle to maintain their own childhood friendship in the face of demanding careers, complicated love lives and an ever-changing city. To save their relationship, they look to the past and the story of their ancestral connection hidden in the folds of an antique white silk fan. (Fox Searchlight Pictures)

Sneak Peek the new poster supporting the upcoming feature "Snow Flower And The Secret Fan", directed by Wayne Wang and produced by Florence Sloan, Wendi Murdoch, and Hugo Shong.
Angela Workman adapted the original screenplay, revised by Ronald Bass and Michael Ray, based on the 2005 novel, "Snow Flower And The Secret Fan"by author Lisa See.
Filmed in China, the cast stars actors Li Bingbing, Jun Ji-hyun and Hugh Jackman,
Setting her book in nineteenth century China, See writes that 'Lily', the narrator, was born in 1823 — "the third year of Emperor Daoguang's reign". The novel begins in 1903, when Lily is 80 years old. During her lifetime, Lily lives through the reigns of the four Chinese emperors, 'Daoguang' (1820–1850), 'Xianfeng' (1850–1861), 'Tongzhi' (1861–1875) and 'Guangxu' (1875–1908).
The film follows Lily's great grandchildren who presumably take a different path than their ancestors.

Scream 4
Opens: April 15th 2011
Cast: Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Mary McDonnell, Emma Roberts Director: Wes Craven
Summary: Sidney Prescott, now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with family and friends, but it also brings about the return of Ghostface which puts the whole town in danger.
Analysis: Back in late 1996 when I first began covering film news, "Scream" was released and became more than just a sleeper hit. After years of genre movies being relegated to direct-to-video status, this comedic slasher spawned the biggest surge in the horror film genre since "Halloween" almost two decades before. Its post-modern stylings and witty self-aware dialogue went on to be a big influence on films and television in general.
Yet the "Scream" series itself never could quite capture that glory again. By the time the...

Up until now, the main thing that most readers might know about Wayne Wang's new movie, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, is that Hugh Jackman has a small appearance performing a song during one scene. The film will start to get a lot more exposure soon, as Fox Searchlight has picked it up for distribution in the States. Wang directed the film from a script by Ron Bass, Angela Workman and Michael Ray, which adapts Lisa See's novel. The story, as THR describes, is a "cross-generational drama [which] explores female friendship through two relationships separated by more than a hundred years." In other words, the tale is right in Wayne Wang's wheelhouse, as he's done really well in the past with films like The Joy Luck Club, before he dove into studio tripe like Maid in Manhattan and Because of Winn-Dixie. We don't yet know when Fox...

Fox Searchlight acquires only a few films each year. So one reason why Fox Searchlight Pictures co-presidents nm2317539 autoNancy Utley[/link] and nm2322989 autoStephen Gilula[/link] picked up Wayne Wang's 19th-century drama Snow Flower and the Secret Fan can be found in the producing credits. The Idg China Media film, based on Lisa See's novel by Ron Bass, Angela Workman and Michael Ray, is produced by Fox mogul Rupert Murdoch's wife, Wendi, with Florence Sloan and exec producer Hugo Shong. The film stars Gianna Jun and Li Bing Bing as friends with a special bond from childhood who live isolated lives with bound feet, but communicate with each other via a secret language; an added contemporary story mirrors their devotion. The film is about 50/50 English and Chinese, says Searchlight. Wang is still editing.

Beijing -- During its first day of shooting in China, director Wayne Wang's "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" added Hugh Jackman just as it lost China's biggest actress, Zhang Ziyi.
Jackman will join the English-language drama at month's end at the Hengdian Studio outside Shanghai, local media reported Tuesday, calling his role the male lead. Jackman's publicist said that "at this point in time, he is doing an unbilled cameo."
In either case, it would be Jackman's first project in China, adding him to a growing list of Hollywood stars -- including most recently Kevin Spacey -- who are coming East to work in the world's fastest-growing movie market.
Meanwhile, Zhang's manager said the actress, who was to have co-produced the film set in rural 19th century China, dropped out "because of scheduling conflicts."

Set in 19th century remote China, the film revolves around the lifelong friendship of Lily and Snow Flower and their imprisonment by rigid cultural codes of conduct for women.
Producers were scheduled for talks during the coming days with potential backers and distributors at Afm.
Although it would be Zhang's second feature as producer, "Flower" would be the first in partnership with Murdoch, the China-born wife of News Corp. chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch. Sloan, who is Malaysian-Chinese, is married to MGM chairman Harry Sloan.
