I Think Rings of Power Is Making a Major Mistake in Season 3 (And It's Gonna Make Fans Mad)

Quick LinksThe Rings of Power Season 3's Time Jump is a MistakeWhy the Rings of Power Is Jumping Ahead By Several Years

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Poweris officially returning for a third season. The controversial Prime Video original series dives into the deeper works of J.R.R. Tolkien to craft a larger vision of the world of Middle-earth before the War of the Ring. The first two seasons of The Rings of Power depicted the return of the Dark Lord Sauron to Middle-earth after his and Morgoth's defeat in the First Age. Now, as the end of the Second Age looms nearer, Sauron works to corrupt the races of Men, Elves, and Dwarves, swaying them with the otherworldly strength of his deviously crafted rings of power. However, a small group of foresighted Elves and Men work against the rising darkness in the world, fighting to keep...

The Rings of Power scores season 3 renewal, and there's going to be a time jump
Image
It’s good news for The Rings of Power’s future and the decision on a third season!

One of the biggest fantasy shows out there is The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The prequel to the Oscar-winning movie franchise takes place thousands of years before the films and the events leading to Sauron creating the One Ring.

Season 2 aired in 2024, with the question of whether it will continue. While the show is a success, its huge budget (reportedly over a billion dollars for the two seasons so far) makes it pretty costly. Also, while viewing numbers seem strong, a report indicated viewership had fallen a whopping 60% from season 1.

Those worries of cancellation are for naught, as Rings of Power has been renewed for season 3! TV Line had the report along with a statement from Vernon Sanders, head of television for Amazon MGM Studios:

Elrond's Rings Of Power Season 2 Story Makes One Lord Of The Rings Scene So Much Sadder
Image
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 makes an Elrond scene from the movies even more tragic. Played by Robert Aramayo, the younger Elrond is one of the most important Rings of Power characters. His relationships with Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Durin IV (Owain Arthrur) have been at the heart of the series. Elrond has done his best to balance his friendship with Durin against the larger issues that the Elves and the Dwarves face.

In season 2, Elrond's friendship with Galadriel is tested by their opposing views on whether the rings of power should be used. By Rings of Power season 2's ending, Elrond's viewpoint on the rings of power changes given the actions of Galadriel and the changes that have occurred across Middle-earth. Despite having a different outlook heading into Rings of Power season 3, Elrond's resistance to the rings makes a scene from the movies sadder.

‘Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power’ Cast on Keeping the Gandalf Secret, Fighting Giant Spiders and Regretting Asking for Heavy Boots
Image
When Nori Brandyfoot actress Markella Kavenagh discovered Gandalf might be a part of “The Lord Of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” she had no qualms about getting showrunners to spill the beans.

“So, the very first rehearsal I had with [Daniel Weyman] who plays the Stranger, I asked him in front of one of the showrunners, Patrick, if he was playing Gandalf,” Kavenagh said at a recent “Rings of Power” panel hosted by Variety. “Wrong move. Definitely bad. Wrong question at that stage. But Dan said something really cool, which was that at that point, The Stranger didn’t know who he really was, or what his journey really entails. And I honestly never thought about it again.”

For Kavenagh, Season 2 of “Rings of Power” was an opportunity to explore a more world-weary Nori: “Season 1 Nori was in such a different place. She’s seen a bit more of...

Clever Rings Of Power Theory Reveals Theo Is This Lord Of The Rings Character, Not A Nazgl
Image
Ever since his appearance in the premiere of Prime Videos The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Theo (Tyroe Muhafidin) has been a topic of heated debate, with many fans wondering why a character not appearing in Tolkiens lore would play such a seemingly important role in the series. Throughout his story arc, different theories about Theos future have appeared, with the credibility of many deteriorating as his character slowly evolved throughout the shows progression.

After Theo discovered the mysterious sword hilt linked to the Dark Lord (Charlie Vickers), fans speculated that he had an important connection to Sauron. Throughout his journey, fans have conjectured that this link to Sauron foretells Theo becoming a Nazgl (possibly the Witch-king of Angmar) or the Mouth of Sauron. Once Theo interacted with Isildur (Maxim Baldry), fans wondered if he could become the founder of Rohan or even the King of the Dead.

10 British Sci-Fi Shows You Probably Haven't Heard Of
Image
The UK has produced several incredible sci-fi TV shows, many of which audiences havent heard of before. The best sci-fi TV shows of 2024 may be relevant right now, but multiple titles that are long forgotten still offer viewers a compelling story to sink their teeth into. British TV is known for producing some of the most famous sci-fi shows ever, such as Doctor Who. Red Dwarf is returning in 2025, which proves just how good the UKs sci-fi shows are.

However, some titles arent as prominent as these. This doesnt mean that these shows are bad, but rather that theyre simply underrated or overshadowed by other projects. Science fiction is a competitive genre, undoubtedly, but some UK shows simply didnt make a big enough splash internationally. Despite executing typically overused sci-fi TV tropes well or having a cast of popular actors, these British shows are relatively unknown and deserve more attention.

Every episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2, ranked worst to best
Image
The season 2 finale of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power aired last Thursday. So there's no new episode this week, but we have the next best thing: nit-picking and ranking! Let's run through all eight episodes from The Rings of Power season 2, ranking them from worst to best, "worst" and "best" being relative terms:

Credit: Ross Ferguson / Prime Video. Copyright: Amazon MGM Studios. Ismael Cruz Córdova as Arondir; Maxim Baldry as Isildur; Nia Towle as Estrid. 8. Episode 204, "Eldest"

The Rings of Power is set during the Second Age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before The Lord of the Rings story most of us know. Some characters are familiar and some are brand-new, and some of their stories are more entertaining than others. "Eldest" revolves mainly around some of the more boring characters in the cast, namely the elf Arondir, the Númenórean Isildur, and the human woman Estrid.

Prime Video celebrated the end of the second season of “The Rings of Power” by gathering some of the cast members for a screening of the 74-minute finale, “Shadow and Flame,” on Tuesday night. The cast members talked about what they were most excited to tackle in Season 2, the pressures working on the big-budget fantasy series based on the J. R. R. Tolkien books, and how they have to keep so many secrets because “Lotr” characters like Sauron and Gandalf are so well-known.

A Future Nazgl vs Founder Of Rohan: Who Is Theo In Rings Of Power
Image
Warning: Contains Minor Spoilers for The Rings of Power, season 2

One reoccurring character in The Rings of Power who carries nearly as much mystery as Sauron (Charlie Vickers) and Gandalf (Daniel Weyman) before their identities were revealed is Theo (Tyroe Muhafidin). The Rings of Power continues to explore Theo as he discovers a strange sword, loses his mother, and interacts with characters as integral as Arondir (Ismael Cruz Crdova), Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), and Isildur (Maxim Baldry). Fan speculation posits that this little known character could become a Nazgl or the founder of Rohan.

It is unlikely that The Rings of Power would spend as much time as it does with Theo unless his character has an exciting reveal. Several factors hint at Theo's future role in the fate of Middle-earth. Among all the speculation behind the Rohan and Nazgl theories, The Rings of Power provides more evidence for one of these fates over the other.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power Showrunners Debunk Popular "Dark Wizard" Theory - Spoilers
Image
The second season of Prime Video's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power came to an end this week, and the finale seemed to leave little doubt as to the identity of the "Dark Wizard" played by Game of Thrones alum Ciarán Hinds.

However, all may not be as it seems when it comes to this mysterious and very powerful character.

We know that this blatantly evil sorcerer is an "Istar," and it was generally assumed that he must be Sarauman. Granted, it would be a pretty major change to the lore if this character "broke bad" prior to the events of Tolkien's trilogy, but so would the introduction of another Istari who was never mentioned in the saga at all.

This led to speculation that Hinds might be playing either Alatar or Pallando, the "Blue Wizards" who are never really discussed in any great detail in The Lord of the Rings...

That's been clear since reports first emerged about creators Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne's five-season, billion-dollar plan for J.R.R. Tolkien's masterworks. The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power Finale Teaser Unleashes The Balrog And Confirms [Spoiler]'s Fate
Image
Prime Video has already released a brief promo for this Thursday's season 2 finale of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, but an extended version has now been shared online which features quite a bit of new footage.

Spoilers for the previous episode follow.

It's not the best quality, but the video shows more of the fierce battle between Galadriel and Sauron that was teased in the first trailer. The Dark Lord is still in his Annatar form here - but as we've already seen, this makes him no less powerful.

We also have another shot of the Balrog, who was first awakened from his long slumber in the season 2 finale. The fiery demon will be unleashed from his cavern deep beneath Moria when King Durin refuses to listen to his son and digs far too deeply into the mountain.

After Two Seasons, I Think We Were Wrong About The Rings of Power

Quick Links The Rings of Power's Backlash May Have Been Too Hasty The Rings of Power Season 2 is Proving Lord of the Rings Fans Wrong The Future of The Rings of Power is Worth Sticking Around

It's no secret that Prime Video's The Rings of Power has been controversial among Lord of the Rings fans. From the very beginning, longtime lovers of Middle-earth have been wary about the new series, which aims to tell a more complete story about the forging of the Rings of Power leading up to the epic confrontation between Sauron and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. As a fan of movies and television, I tend to have the opposite reaction when a show gets heavy backlash from the fanbase to which it is directed, so I wasn't surprised when I liked the first season of The Rings of Power more than the average viewer.

Rings Of Power Episode 7 Kiss Might Be The Show's Most Divisive Moment Yet - Spoilers
Image
The penultimate season 2 episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is now streaming, and despite featuring a massive battle and a couple of deaths (though we'd say Arondir is still kicking), it was a kiss between two characters that emerged as the biggest talking point.

Spoilers from this point on.

Though they never had a relationship in J.R.R. Tolkien's source material, Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo) locked lips in "Doomed To Die." Were these Elven comrades simply unable to contain their feelings any longer, giving in to their passionate desire for one another?

Not exactly.

The kiss was actually a strategic play on Elrond's part, as he was able to slip the captured Galadriel a cloak pin that she would later use to free herself from Adar. While some fans enjoyed this moment and are even "shipping" the characters, a lot of others...

Rings of Power Designer Explains Why Sauron's Elven Look Is Different From Other Elves
Image
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power designer Barrie Gower recently explained why Sauron's Elven form looks different from other Elves on the show. In the second season of the Prime Video series, Sauron disguises as Annatar (Charles Vickers), the Lord of Gifts and self-proclaimed emissary from the god-like Valar, to deceive the Elven smith Celebrimbor into crafting the remaining rings of power.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Gower discussed why it was necessary to differentiate Annatar from the other Elves in Middle-earth. The designer explained the practical processes of achieving the future Dark Lord of Middle Earth's otherwordly appearance. "So, we are dictated primarily to giving somebody elf ears that would suit them, but we're covering their own ears basically, or extending. Fortunately, Charlie has very nice ears, so we were able to give them these beautiful, slightly upturned angular ears," he said. "We were...

The Rings Of Power's Leon Wadham On Kemen's Dangerous Season 2 Ambitions & Why He Shouldn't Get A Ring
Image
With his father now in power, Kemen is quickly becoming far too power hungry in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2. Introduced in season 1 of the Prime Video prequel to J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, Kemen is the son of Trystan Gravelle's Pharazn, the key advisor to Nmenor's Queen Mriel. Having been raised in a life of luxury and privilege, Kemen is often a troublesome thorn in both his father and other Nmenrian's sides, as he frequently gets away with his actions.

In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2, Kemen's ambitions are growing well beyond his reach after he and Pharazn ruled over Nmenor during Mriel's travels to the Southlands, having gotten a taste of the life of royalty. Why Rings Of Power's Erien Sides With Pharazn Over Her Father In Season 2 Detailed By Lotr Star
Image
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 star Ema Horvath explains why her character, Erien, chooses Pharazn (Trystan Gravelle) over her own father. Based on The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, Prime Video's fantasy series returned last month for its sophomore outing, following Sauron (Charlie Vickers) as he works to forge the titular rings. Troubles in the Middle-earth city of Nmenor have also been a key focus in the season 2 episodes thus far, with Erien and her father, Captain Elendil (Lloyd Owen), finding themselves on opposites sides of a power struggle.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Horvath dives deep into Erien's headspace in The Rings of Power season 2, explaining that it's a confluence of several factors that have shaped her decision to side with Pharazn. Rings of Power Season 2, Episode 5 Review: Middle-earth Is Getting Harder to Care About
Image
The following contains spoilers for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, Episode 5, now streaming on Prime Video.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 has improved over Season 1-- but it's still far from perfect. Season 2, Episode 5 covers a lot of territory from Nmenor, Khazad-dm and Eregion, while lightly touching on Elrond, Gil-galad and Galadriel. While many of the stories are well-balanced, Rings of Power is still struggling with how to make audiences care about its storylines when each one is fighting for screen time. Episode 5 highlights this struggle perfectly.

Episode 5 is anchored by the performances of Charles Edwards, Charlie Vickers and Peter Mullan. Celebrimbor and Annatar's relationship continues to grow more interesting, while Durin and Disa demonstrate great emotional depth. Elsewhere, Lloyd Owen as Elendil helps to elevate the Nmenor plot and create a much stronger example of the political intrigue of the world of men.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2, episode 4 is now streaming on Prime Video, and among the Ents (and Ent-wives), eerie Barrow-Wights and the debut of Tom Bombadil, the most significant talking point might be our biggest hint yet as to the true identity of The Stranger (Daniel Weyman).

When Nori (Markella Kavanaugh) and Poppy (Megan Richards) get separated from their "Istar" friend after being whisked away by a sandstorm he caused (he still doesn't quite have a grasp of his powers), they encounter a group of larger Halflings who call themselves Stoors (Smeagol/Gollum is believed to have been a Stoorish Hobbit). The Rings of Power Creators React to 'Tom Bombadil Is God' Theory
Image
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have addressed whether Tom Bombadil is the most powerful being in Middle Earth, virtually making him "God." Rory Kinnear portrays the character in the Prime Video series, now in its second season.

J.R.R. Tolkien's source material depicts the character as a jolly singing fellow who has been around since the beginning of time. The characterization informed Bombadil's presentation in The Rings of Power, which retains core elements without affecting the show's serious tone. Dialogue in the series' fourth episode hints that Bombadil's demeanor belies his true status in Middle Earth, with many asking if he is basically "God." "We would have no problem if that question was being asked because people say that about the character in the books," co-showrunner Payne told The Hollywood Reporter. "And I think people asked that of Tolkien himself.
