Exclusive: Over the last year Sony has been globalizing the studio’s marketing department in how they approach, position and promote their tentpoles. As such, Deadline learned today that industry vets Andre Caraco and Paul Noble have been named Sony Co-Presidents of Global Marketing. In addition, Mari Gastineau is being promoted to Evp, Global Marketing and will support Caraco and Noble on daily marketing ops.

The studio has a hot film on their hands today with the opening of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. Dr. Phil and Jay McGraw have sold two hourlong projects to CBS via their Stage 29 Productions, faith-themed medical drama Chaplain with Nick Weiss (Drunk Wedding), Isaac Laskin and Reign co-creator/executive producer Laurie McCarthy; and legal drama Melanie, with Scott Prendergast (Silicon Valley). Both projects hail from CBS TV Studios, where the McGraws’ Stage 29 has a deal, with Phil and Jay McGraw executive producing alongside Stage 29’s head of scripted Julia Eisenman.

The sales expand the McGraws’ relationship with CBS where Stage 29 produces legal drama series Bull, which was based on Dr. Phil McGraw’s experience.

Written by Weiss and Laskin, Chaplain centers around a talented, scientifically minded ICU doctor and her free-thinking, faith-oriented brother clash over the best approach to the business of saving lives when he is hired as chaplain at her hospital.

Dr. Phil and his son Jay McGraw are developing two new drama series at CBS, Variety has learned.

Both projects will be produced by CBS Television Studios, where the McGraws are set up under an overall deal.

The first project is titled “Chaplain.” It follows a talented, scientifically minded ICU doctor and her free-thinking, faith-oriented brother. They clash over the best approach to the business of saving lives when he is hired as chaplain at her hospital.

The series hails from writers Nick Weiss and Isaac Laskin, with Weiss set to executive produce and Laskin co-executive producing. The McGraws will executive produce along with Julia Eisenman via their Stage 29 Productions banner, with Laurie McCarthy also executive producing.

Earlier this month, we showed you the exclusive Drunk Wedding poster. Today, we have the first trailer for this wild and raunchy comedy about a destination wedding ceremony that goes completely off the rails. The film marks the directorial debut of Nick Weiss, who scrapped together a hundred grand of his own money to shoot the movie in central America. It must have turned out great, as Paramount was quick to snatch it up for theatrical distribution.

Drunk Wedding centers on a couple with the perfect destination wedding. The problem is that all of their friends from college are coming and when this crew gets together, the only thing that is promised is that everything that can go wrong will go wrong. Oren Peli’s Area 51 To Debut May 15 At Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas
Paramount Insurge today announced that Area 51 and Drunk Wedding will receive one-weekend-only limited engagements exclusively at 16 Alamo Drafthouse Cinema locations in May. Additionally, the films will be available day-and-date on VOD and all digital platforms.

Area 51 will debut Friday, May 15th and run through Sunday, May 17th with one showtime daily. Nicholas Weiss has been named Svp Creative Advertising at Sony Pictures Entertainment, the latest exec hire in the studio’s marketing division. He will report to Michael Pavlic, who in July was promoted to replace the departing President of Worldwide Advertising Tommy Gargotta. Pavlic made today’s announcement along with Theatrical Marketing President Dwight Caines, who came from the digital side to land the top job after Marc Weinstock departed in September 2013.

In September, Sony hired former Paramount marketing chief Josh Greenstein as head of worldwide marketing and distribution, replacing Jeff Blake, who exited after launching Sony’s summer box office.

Weiss comes from entertainment marketer Vibe Creative La, which helped on campaigns for Sony pics including The Amazing Spider-Man movies and 22 Jump Street as well as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Maleficent, Ted and Django Unchained. Weiss will oversee creative advertising campaigns for, among others, the untitled film from Cameron Crowe and the 24th James Bond adventure, both set for release in 2015.

The aliens from Sony's "District 9" scored big during The Hollywood Reporter's 39th annual Key Art Awards.

Honoring the best in movie marketing, Friday's event at Vibiana in downtown Los Angeles saw "District 9" take home 11 awards, including the best-in-show prize for its integrating marketing campaigning as well as three other best-in-show laurels for its outdoor advertising (built around its "Bus Stop for Humans Bus Shelter"), TV spots and digital campaign.

The awards ceremony culminated with Sylvester Stallone receiving the Visionary Award, given annually to a filmmaker who inspires movie marketers.

"At the end of the day, there is no question that Sylvester Stallone delivers great product," THR publisher Lori Burgess said before calling Stallone to the candlelit stage at what once was the altar of the former St. Vibiana Roman Catholic cathedral, which has been converted to a party space.
