“It’s Shakespeare,” historian George Will says in the opening minutes of The Roosevelts: An Intimate History, “to have a single family in which human flaws and virtues are on such vivid display—and the constant struggle between those vices and those virtues to try to do good and fulfill one’s duty.”

In the Church of Jamie Foxx, President Barack Obama might be known as "Our Lord and Savior," but that doesn't mean the title bodes well with certain Christian groups.

Fifty years ago this week, Kennedy gave his historic inaugural address-and soon after blundered into the Bay of Pigs. Newsweek's Evan Thomas on how Obama can avoid a similar fate in Afghanistan.
Appearances can deceive. We picture John F. Kennedy's inauguration, 50 years ago this week, through a warm haze of nostalgia and regret. How romantic it seems now, how far away, and how unlike our own dreary time. Washington must have been Camelot then, or so the myth makers tell us, and so we wish to believe.

From Will Hunting to Jason Bourne to his recent Oscar nominated performance as Francois Pienaar in Clint Eastwood's Invictus, Matt Damon has had an impressive twenty-plus year career playing larger than life characters. Whether tackling spies (the Bourne series), the art of the con (Ocean's Eleven films) or willingly becoming part of a long running gag on The Jimmy Kimmel Show, the Massachusetts native has demonstrated a fearless attitude when it comes to entertainment. Though he has become a marquee name in genre pictures, Damon's best work is in the realm of drama. Reteaming with Paul Greengrass, director of the Bourne sequels, Damon returns in "Green Zone," a thriller inspired by the true story of an Army chief warrant officer seaching for fictitious weapons of mass destruction during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.Jason Isaacs didn't want to get into the percentages in terms of the truths in the story.

The La Times recently reported James Cameron approached both Jake Gyllenhaal and Matt Damon for the lead role in his now-historic Avatar.
“I don’t think they ever had a problem with the CG… I had my heart set on Sam [Worthington, who ultimately got the role of Jake Sully]. Maybe they sensed my lack of 100% commitment from me. Maybe it was the subject matter…They’re both serious actors.”
Serious, huh? So lets ignore the anomaly that is Gyllenhaal in the Prince of Persia and turn our attention to Damon. Just what did Jason Bourne turn down the action-packed Avatar for?
An opportunity to play John F Kennedy’s younger brother Robert in Gary Ross’s new biopic.
Ross’s deal with New Regency has Damon positioned to sign on as the lead provided he likes the script. Since Eastern Promises’ Steven Knight has agreed to write, adapting Evan Thomas’ Kennedy Biography His Life, this qualification seems like a non-issue.

Matt Damon is in talks to star in a new biopic of Robert F. Kennedy with Gary Ross of “Seabiscuit” directing and Steven Knight of “Eastern Promises” writing the script. Deadline Hollywood is reporting that the movie, based on the Evan Thomas biography ‘His Life,’ will delve deep into Rfk's life during his younger days right up until the day he was assassinated in 1968. Although it is not clear, it is assumed that Damon will play Rfk. This movie would follow Emilio Estevez’ biography” Bobby,” which was released in 2006, and did very well in the box office. The whole movie took place on the day the younger Kennedy was shot and it mainly focused on the people around him. Fleming also reports that Chris Columbus and his 1492 Pictures team are working on a movie focused on Kennedy's presidential campaign, called “The Last Campaign.” Other movie stars that have played Rfk...

Matt Damon has closed a deal to star in a biopic of the late politician Robert F. Kennedy. Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) is directing from a script by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises).
An adaptation of the Evan Thomas biography “His Life,” according to Deadline, the film will focus on Rfk’s movement from his brother’s immense public shadow to a political leader in 1968. Robert Kennedy was assassinated on June 5, 1968 at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles during his own presidential campaign.
Damon is a perfect pick for the role not just for his likeness to Kennedy. Working with some of the best modern filmmakers, the 39-year-old has honed his craft and transforms into the character. His portrayal of Francois Pienaar in Invictus was great (he’s nominated a “Supporting Actor” Oscar).

EOnline.com is saying that Matt Damon is "thisclose to starring as the nearest thing we've got to American royalty: a Kennedy. Specifically, Robert F. Kennedy."
It's not a done deal yet, but apparently Damon is attached to play Rfk but it will all depend on the final script, which has not yet been written. The film will be based on Evan Thomas' Robert Kennedy: His Life.
EOnline is further saying that Damon's "already got the accent down. Not to mention the politics." True that!

Robert Kennedy’s life had him veering in and out of his sibling’s shadows to emerge, through tragedy and triumph, as a figurehead of American politics before his assassination in the Ambassador hotel in Los Angeles in June of 1968.
Deadline Hollywood had the news earlier today that Matt Damon is on board, pending his approval of Steven Knight’s script, to star as the politician in a film based on the Evan Thomas book, His Life.
The Kennedys have a peerless political legacy and Rfk has been the subject of biopics, or at least has made an appearance in biopics of his brother, many times before. Emilio Estevez’s cruelly overlooked 2006 film Bobby, centred around the build up and assassination of Rfk but the man himself only appeared in fragments of shots – it was about the people surrounding him, and it was all the more effective because of it.

This could not be more perfect casting. According to Deadline, Matt Damon -- well-spoken Boston native short in stature -- has just signed a deal to star as Robert F. Kennedy -- well-spoken Boston native short in stature -- in a film about the assassinated presidential candidates life. Gary Ross will direct the movie, based on Steven Knight's (Eastern Promises) script.
The deal, however, is contingent upon the script -- Damon won't sign on unless it's great, because that's the Matt Damon way, folks. The movie, based on the Evan Thomas biography His Life, is expected to follow the life of Rfk and how it was he managed to rise out of the shadow of his older brother. Spoiler Alert: He dies in the end.
I couldn't think of a better actor to take the role of Rfk, and honestly, it's a life story that needs Damon, Ross, and Steven Knight.

Word emerges from Deadline Hollywood today that a deal has been struck between Matt Damon and New Regency Pictures that will see the fair-haired actor play Robnert F. Kennedy in a movie about the politician.
According to the site's writer, former Variety reporter Mike Fleming, Damon will be directed by Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) from a script written by Steven Knight (who's adapting the Dan Brown novel The Lost Symbol for Columbia Pictures.) The movie's storyline is being drawn from a Kennedy biography book titled His Life, written by Evan Thomas.
We're still miles away from this being a go picture. First the screenwriter has to adapt the material, receive notes back from the studio and director and likely Damon as well. In a perfect situation we're still looking at this one going to camera at least a year from today.

The news (unsourced) from Deadline Hollywood is that Damon is attached to the starring role in a planned Rfk biopic, based on the Evan Thomas-penned biography "His Life." The current plan is for Gary Ross to direct a script from Steven Knight. Ross previously helmed "Seabiscuit" and "Pleasantville" while Knight's most recent effort is the 2007 hit "Eastern Promises." They make for a potent combo,...

I can't think of any year when Matt Damon wasn't riding high, but 2010 seems to be a whole new phase of pervasiveness, undoubtedly due to that Invictus Best Supporting Actor nomination. Not only does he have a deal or two brewing with Ben Affleck and Warner Bros, Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that he's eying another true life tale -- a biopic of Robert F. Kennedy.
The film will be based on Evan Thomas' Kennedy biography Robert Kennedy: His Life, and has Gary Ross attached to direct, and Steven Knight handling the script. Dhd says that Damon is waiting to officially sign on until he sees the script. But it would suggest he has taken a shine to playing real life individuals after The Informant! (based on a true story, though I'm not certain how much Damon's Mark Whitacre has in common with the real man) and Invictus. He's...

Deadline Hollywood is reporting New Regency just closed a deal for a film based on the life of Robert F. Kennedy. Matt Damon is taking on the lead role and Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) will direct from a script written by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises). The adaptation is going to be based on Evan Thomas’ Rfk biography His Life.
Damon is currently set to star in Contagion for Steven Soderbergh, True Grit for the Coen Brothers, Hereafter for Clint Eastwood, and will next be seen in Paul Greengrass’ Green Zone, in theaters March 12th there is also still rumblings of a Bourne film out there somewhere too. Seems like he is a busy guy.
Damon already looks similar to Rfk, and I think he’ll have no problem slipping into the senator’s speech pattern and accent as he has done the Boston tone before with his acclaimed career starter, Good Will Hunting.

Matt Damon is attached to star in the Robert F. Kennedy biopic setup at New Regency says Deadline Hollywood.
Based on Evan Thomas' 'His Life' biography, the story will follow how the younger brother of JFK went from being in the shadow of his sibling to rising up as a strong national leader in his own right before his assassination in 1968.
It's expected to include some interesting and potentially controversial looks at the extent of his involvement in such things as the Cuban Missile Crisis and two presidential campaigns.
Steven Knight, who is adapting Dan Brown's "The Lost Symbol" into a film, will pen the script and Gary Ross will direct.

Matt Damon is coming for Camelot. In a rather inspired piece of casting news, the Oscar-winning Hollywood royal is thisclose to starring as the nearest thing we've got to American royalty: a Kennedy. Specifically, Robert F. Kennedy. While it's not yet a done deal, Damon is attached to play the assassinated presidential candidate in the biopic, which will be adapted from Evan Thomas' decade-old tome, Robert Kennedy: His Life. Damon's ultimate decision will hinge on the final script, which has yet to be written. (Once it is, it'll be the second Bobby-centric flick in the past few years.) Well, he's already got the accent down. Not to mention the politics.

Matt Damon has signed on to star as Robert F Kennedy in a biopic of the American politician, reports Deadline Hollywood.
The film will be based off the Evan Thomas biography, “Robert Kennedy: His Life.”
Gary Ross (Pleasantville, Seabiscuit) will directed from a script by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises).
Thomas’ book is described as follows:
He was “Good Bobby,” who, as his brother Ted eulogized him, “saw wrong and tried to right it… saw suffering and tried to heal it.” And “Bad Bobby,” the ruthless and manipulative bully of countless conspiracy theories. Thomas’s unvarnished but sympathetic and fair-minded portrayal is packed with new details about Kennedy’s early life and his behind-the-scenes machinations, including new revelations about the 1960 and 1968 presidential campaigns, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and his long struggles with J. Edgar Hoover and Lyndon Johnson.

Hollywood heartthrob Matt Damon is set to play Robert F Kennedy in a new biopic about the early years of his life. The Invictus actor is reportedly in negotiations to play the American politician in an adaptation of Evan Thomas' respected biography Robert Kennedy: His Life, Contactmusic reported. Like the book, the film is expected to follow the civil rights activist, who was the younger brother of former Us President John F Kennedy, from his early life, through the 1960 and 1968 presidential campaigns until his assassination. The film will trace Robert's transformation from the younger brother in the shadow brother President John ...

Gary Ross, the writer and director of Seabiscuit and Pleasantville, has signed on to direct an adaptation of Evan Thomas’ Robert F. Kennedy biography His Life. The script will be written by Eastern Promises and Dirty Pretty Things writer Steven Knight. While I have my reservations about Ross, Knight is an incredibly talented screenwriter, and I’m sure he’ll be able to tap into the source material adequately.
The best news, however, is that Green Zone’s Matt Damon has reportedly been cast as Kennedy. Damon is a diverse actor, not to mention a pretty good physical match for Kennedy, so I’m certain he’ll be able to bring Kennedy back to life with skill.
From Mary Carroll’s Booklist review of His Life:

Fresh off an Oscar nominated performance as real life South African rugby player Francois Pienaar, the eclectic Matt Damon looks to be lining up another role which will have him playing an even bigger real-life persona as Deadline Hollywood reports he just closed a deal to star as the late U.S. senator and civil rights activist Robert F. Kennedy in a new biopic that will be directed by Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) from a script by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises). Although Damon is attached, the project won't get off the ground until he sees the script, which will largely be based on Evan Thomas' biography His Life in 2002. The film will focus on Rfk's rise from behind the shadow of his older brother, President John F. Kennedy, as he went on to become an amazing political figure without relying on the legacy of the rest of his family.

It’s a case of “uh, yeah, duh!” casting this chilly Wednesday, as news comes that Matt Damon is set to star in a biopic of Robert F Kennedy. He will take the lead in director Gary Ross’ drama, which is being adapted from Evan Thomas’ Kennedy biography His Life (we bet that title will be changed for the film) by screenwriter Steven Knight (of Dirty Pretty Things and Eastern Promises). Details are still light, but we know that Thomas’ book looked at both sides of Kennedy’s personality –...

Nikki Finke is reporting that Matt Damon is going to star in a biopic of Robert F Kennedy for New Regency. Directed by Gary Ross, and written by Dirty Pretty Things and Eastern Promises scribe Steven Knight. The film will be adapted from the Evan Thomas-penned biography His Life, published in 2000. Ross burst into Hollywood as the screenwriter and co-producer of Big. He also wrote Mr. Baseball, Dave and Lassie before making his feature directorial debut with Pleasentville. He has since wrote and directed Seabiscuit and the animated film The Tale of Despereaux. Matt Damon has come a long way since those early days of Good Will Hunting, and deservedly so. His performances in everything from the 'Bourne' films to Invictus have been energetic and compelling, and for the most part the actor is especially choosy about which roles he takes, and which he doesn't.
His next role could be the part of a lifetime, if he elects to take it. According to Deadline, the actor is presently in talks to star as Robert F. Kennedy in a biopic about the slain former Us Senator and Attorney General.
Deadline states that Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) will direct from a script by Steven Knight (Eastern Promises). Damon is said to be waiting to read the script before committing to the project, which will be based on the Evan Thomas biography "His Life".

Exclusive: In this tough marketplace, if you want to make another movie about a complex historical figure like Robert F Kennedy, you'd better bring to the table an actor with chops and bankability to excite a financier. Damon will wait to see the script before we know whether or not the project will really happen. The film will be based on the Evan Thomas biography His Life, which [...]...
