Several years ago, I spent a weekend at Disneyland with a fellow Star Wars fan and heard all about her favorite TV show. She quoted the Jedi Master, told me how nice the actors were behind the scenes, and showed me wonderful fan art that she had done. Since I had yet to see a minute of Star Wars: Rebels, I watched the first three episodes before I had to catch the shuttle to the airport. And then I sporadically watched some of the series as the years went by.
Of course, things piqued my interest. I heard Timothy Zahn's thoughts on the inclusion of Thrawn when he came to FanX in Salt Lake City and I inevitably overheard a lot of spoilers in the lead-up to Ahsoka. With the 10th anniversary, here are some independent thoughts as a returning newcomer to the series.

Jason Reitman has described Saturday Night as a “comedy thriller” and said that the villain of the movie is time itself. It’s easy to see what he means in the new trailer for the film that depicts the chaotic premiere night of the comedy institution Saturday Night Live. The trailer, newly released by Sony, showcases more of the incredible recreations at Studio 8H, housed at the famous 30 Rockefeller Plaza, along with the cast of the film emulating that ragtag group of soon-to-be over-the-night comedy sensations.
In the new Saturday Night trailer, Labelle’s Lorne Michaels scrambles to get his show on the road in the face of impending failure. Between battling Rockafella Center security, being at odds with Mbc programming higher-up David Tebet (Willem Dafoe), and trying to keep his cast from killing each other, Michaels faces an uphill battle of wills to launch what eventually becomes an institution among television programming.

Oscar-winner Marcia Gay Harden has boarded Renner, the new sci-fi thriller from writer, director and producer Robert Rippberger.
The Pollock and Mystic River star joins an ensemble cast led by Frankie Muniz, Violett Beane and Taylor Gray. Harden will voice the role of Salenus, an artificially intelligent companion designed by computer genius Renner (Muniz).
The story centers on Renner, who after trying to court his new neighbor Jamie (Beane) with the help of Salenus, he realizes too late he accidentally programmed his manipulative mother into it. Rippberg will helm Renner based on a script he co-wrote with Martin Medina and Luke Medina, while sharing the producer credits with Medina, KT Kent, Devin Keaton and Jay Burnley of Slated.
“I’m incredibly honored to have an acclaimed performer like Marcia be voice to the very piece of technology that is reshaping Hollywood,” Rippberger said in a statement. “We have always had oracles in society.

"We're 90 minutes of live television by a group of 20-year-olds who have never made anything. Did you ever stop and wonder why they said yes? A counterculture show starring total unknowns with zero narrative and even less structure. They want you to fail."
That's how producer Dick Ebersol (played by Cooper Hoffman of "Licorice Pizza") describes the comedic experiment that was "Saturday Night Live" in the first trailer for Jason Reitman's new movie "Saturday Night." The film chronicles all the chaos, fighting, drama, and hilarity that unfolded behind the scenes before the premiere of what would become one of the most iconic comedy shows of all time.
When Vanity Fair debuted a first look at "Saturday Night" earlier this week, Reitman described it as a comedy-thriller where time was the villain, and that's exactly what we get in the trailer you can watch above. There's a literal ticking clock...

J.K. Simmons has joined the cast of Jason Reitman’s SNL 1975, and not only will the Oscar winner be playing Hollywood legend Milton Berle, but he’ll have the notable distinction of becoming the first actual SNL host to join the cast of the Sony movie.
Simmons hosted the Jan. 31, 2015 episode of Saturday Night Live, which featured D’Angelo as the musical guest. At the time, Simmons was riding high off an Oscar nomination for Whiplash, and he would go on to win the Academy Award following his SNL hosting stint.
Meanwhile, Berle hosted SNL on April 14, 1979, and Ornette Coleman was his musical guest. It’s unclear where Berle fits into Reitman’s movie at this moment in time.

U.S. director and producer Robert Rippberger, who recently wrapped sci-fi thriller “Renner” with Frankie Muniz, is headed to the European Film Market in Berlin to launch the sales unit of his banner Sie Films. Its slate will be fronted by his next project, the horror thriller “Monstrosity.”
“Monstrosity,” which is currently in pre-production, is a creature feature that Rippberger will produce and direct. To create its titular monsters, Rippberger recruited concept artist Aaron Sims, whose work includes “Stranger Things,” “Ready Player One” and “Wonder Woman 1984.” Production on the film is expected to kick off later this year in one of the Morgan International full-service special effects facilities in Europe. Writer Sabir Pirzada is producing “Monstrosity” alongside Rippberger.
“Monstrosity” opens on a young village boy who goes missing down a mine shaft. His father blames a strange family in the neighboring house, but of course far more is at play.

Spoilers for "Ahsoka" follow.
What compelled Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), a Mandalorian, to remove and store her neon beskar armor in "Ahsoka"? Episode 4, "A Fallen Jedi," insinuates a depressing answer to this, as well as her fervor to find her long-lost battle brother Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) in the far reaches of Wild Space. It's only when Sabine regains hope in Ezra's survival that she dons her beskar and Mandalorian weaponry again.
Sabine lands in a tight spot when she seemingly loses her Jedi master, Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson). Cornered by Baylan Skoll (Ray Stevenson), a former Jedi and Imperial-allied mercenary, Sabine holds the Wild Space map hostage. Through Force mind-reads and deduction, Baylan realizes that Sabine lost her Mandalorian birth family, which fuels her desperation to find Ezra. He tempts her to surrender the map in return for her survival, which gives the Thrawn loyalists the coordinates to Wild Space.

A brush of sadness crosses Hera Syndulla's (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) smile when her little green-haired son chirps, "I wanna be a Jedi," like his Aunt Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo). To a "Star Wars Rebels" viewer, the intriguing part is that little Jacen Syndulla (Evan Whitten), a Twi'lek-human child, doesn't utter, "Like my dad!" Pragmatically, "Ahsoka," a live-action sequel to "Rebels," would not want to dive into excessive past characters. Jacen's human father seems to be a story that Hera prefers to explain to him another day. This is as tantalizing as his evolution from his original cartoon incarnation, which was precedent-setting for "Star Wars" humanoid hybrids.
Long before Werner Herzog said it on "The Mandalorian" season 1, a "Rebels" viewer might have demanded, "I would like to see the baby." No, not Grogu, the Mando's baby. But Jacen Syndulla. So "Ahsoka" finally debuting the little guy in live-action has ended...

One of the most highly-anticipated "Star Wars" shows in the Disney+ era is about to premiere, and chances are fans fall into one of two categories. There are those who've been anxiously awaiting the epic sequel to the final season of the animated series, checking in on Hera Syndulla, Sabine Wren, Ezra Bridger, and the rest of the "Star Wars: Rebels" characters years after we last saw them. And then there are the more casual fans who'll be watching "Ahsoka" with absolutely zero frame of reference for who several of the supporting characters -- and even the main character, at that -- actually are.
So goes the fickle nature of crossing the (digital) streams these days on major blockbusters, as Lucasfilm follows in the footsteps of Marvel's #ItsAllConnected branding campaign to officially unite the two divergent branches from the main "Star Wars" tree: Animation and live-action. Although this arguably began...

"Star Wars: Visions" Volume 2 seemed to have done its homework on Star Wars cartoons. For starters, the "Bandits of Golak" utters a quip like "All this for sweets?", which emulates a line like "All this for fruit?" in "Star Wars Rebels" season 1. But the Aardman stop-motion short "I Am Your Mother" takes its "Rebels" homages a step further through its Twi'lek character designs.
That is, if the creative and color choices aren't just a coincidence. The Aardman short concerns a teal Twi'lek mother and daughter, both of whom just happen to resemble the old teal concept art of Hera Syndulla, the Twi'lek pilot of the Ghost crew in "Rebels" voiced by Vanessa Marshall. This may feel coincidental until you spy Hera Syndulla floating in the background and suspect that the short's director, Magdalena Osinska, was deliberate about their nearly identical appearances to the Hera prototypes. As the upcoming "Ahsoka" live-action series hovers on the horizon, the recent Star Wars Celebration announcement of Lars Mikkelsen taking up the blue make-up to reprise his legendary animated voice role in the full-bodied flesh sent waves of excitement through Star Wars fans. A main baddie for the final half of the "Star Wars Rebels" animated series created by Dave Filoni (showrunning again for "Ahsoka"), the ice-blue Chiss Admiral proved to be a formidable and terrifying threat to the Ghost crew. Mitth'raw'nuruodo's (Thrawn's Chiss name) epic (re)entrance into the public consciousness provided fond memories for Celebration attendees back in 2016, especially for the generation who grew up with the Legends novels that started with Timothy Zahn's 1991 "Heir to the Empire." That book kicked off an enduring Legends reign for Thrawn as an intelligent Imperial tactician who had no nonsense for Imperial stupidity.

"The Clone Wars" cartoon introduced the Togruta padawan who won the hearts of many fans. George Lucas created Ahsoka Tano to give the famed Anakin Skywalker an apprentice, thus kickstarting a game-changing piece of canon outside of his "Star Wars" feature trilogies. Originated and voiced by Ashley Eckstein, the Togruta entered "Star Wars" with a coming-of-age arc that endured across several "Star Wars" cartoons, texts, and now the live-action realm beginning with "The Mandalorian" (portrayed in the flesh by Rosario Dawson).
The upcoming live-action "Ahsoka" series, developed by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, seems both exciting and daunting for Star Wars fans, since it heralds the live-action iterations of the fan-favorite Spectres of the Ghost crew in the "Star Wars Rebels" cartoon. If you want to (re)familiarize yourself with Ahsoka and her allies, /Film has gathered the necessary textual and illustrated projects you should read before the new show premieres.

To be a clone soldier is to have an unlucky station in life throughout the "Star Wars" franchise. Bred and conditioned for military servitude, the clone troopers (voiced by Dee Bradley Baker), known as Clone Force 99 aka the Bad Batch, don't really know a galaxy without war. As the Republic morphed into the Empire, the clone troopers confront a more precarious and expendable position in the galaxy as conscripted stormtroopers usurp their military roles. Even clones loyal to Emperor Palpatine don't get the best treatment. This slams in full force in season 2 of the "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" CGI cartoon, the follow-up to "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" animated series.
Being Awol clones with mutations and specialized abilities (unlike "reg" clones), the titular Bad Batch siblings face the growing tyranny of the Empire. After they survived the latter's orbital bombing of Tipoca City, squad leader Hunter, Tech, Wrecker, and...

Scientific research tells us that nearly all of the cells in the human body are renewed every seven years. Personally, I like to think that explains the “seven-year itch,” the phenomenon by which so many of us change jobs, friends and such on a predictable cycle: because you’re literally not the same person anymore.
It’s been eight years since Albee (Amber Midthunder) and Walker (Taylor Gray) got married, and their relationship is running on fumes. A surprisingly serious-minded drama from “Hot Tub Time Machine” helmer Steve Pink (who co-wrote Gen X John Cusack romances “Grosse Pointe Blank” and “High Fidelity”), no-frills indie “The Wheel” follows this couple on a weekend retreat to a remote Airbnb, where the pair plan to hash things out once and for all.
Walker has brought along a self-help book, “Seven Questions to Save Your Marriage.” Albee says she’s game, but seldom looks away from her iPhone.

Throughout it all, Tommy keeps calling an 800 number, as he feels the woman on the line (Ali Richey) is the only adult he can confide in. By the end of the night, the boys’ brotherhood breaks down as they cross the threshold into adulthood.

With Obi-Wan Kenobi premiering a little less than two months from now, it’s time to get excited about a key aspect of Disney’s Star Wars universe: Cameos, and the possibility of bringing animated favorite to screen life. The Mandalorian made a statement when it translated many popular characters from Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels to live action. The animated shows will only grow more important to this part of the Disney universe, since Ahsoka seems positioned as a Rebels sequel of sorts, and even Obi-Wan Kenobi is including a key animated character in the Grand Inquisitor. With that in mind, here are the animated characters from The Clone Wars and Rebels we’d love to see show up in live action. Despite only being 24 years old, Walker (Taylor Gray) and Albee (Amber Midthunder) head into the woods from their Los Angeles existence to try to save their eight-year marriage. Well, he’s trying to save their marriage. To look at their interactions is to wonder why Albee hadn’t left years ago. We catch glimpses of a smile every now and then, but mostly her head is buried in her phone or coldly lamenting why Walker has taken her to the middle of nowhere to read a self-help book that she doesn’t believe can fix what’s broken. And maybe his desire to try is less about optimism than it is delusion. Maybe their union isn’t what’s broken; it’s them. To fix that means confronting even worse pain.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker isn’t just the last third of the Sequel Trilogy, but it also marks the final chapter of what we’re now calling the Skywalker saga. J.J. Abrams has a big job on his hands here, too, as he has to tie up the entirety of the franchise to date with a neat bow. Given that, there’s been a lot of speculation that some key characters from across the past nine movies will cameo in Episode IX. And new leaks have now surfaced which seemingly support this.
Making Star Wars has reported on some info supplied to them by their sources who’ve seen either early cuts of the film or have listened to the sound mix. According to the site, Rise will feature six major cameos during its big third act. We shouldn’t expect any to appear in the flesh, but...

Star Wars Rebels wrapped up its fourth and final season earlier this month and delivered an exciting and emotional last episode. At the climax, the show’s protagonist, Ezra Bridger, appeared to sacrifice himself to defeat the evil Grand Admiral Thrawn, as he sent the villain’s ship hurtling through hyperspace without the protection of windshields. The pair were never to be seen again and as such, their fates were left open-ended.
What the future holds in store for Ezra in particular remains unknown at this time, but in addition to the show’s legion of fans, someone who wants him to return in a different incarnation of the franchise is his voice actor, Taylor Gray. Though he appreciates how Rebels gave the character a fitting ending in many ways, that doesn’t stop him from wanting Ezra to be revealed to be still alive – maybe even living with some space-squid creatures.

Star Wars Rebels‘ final season concluded this week in inevitable fashion – with the show’s ragtag band of Rebels making a noble last stand against the might of the Galactic Empire. The series exceeded expectations and ended up giving us some of the finest stories outside of the films and now, to mark its end, the cast and crew have been reflecting on their time putting Rebels together, with the latest to share their thoughts being Taylor Gray, voice actor for Ezra Bridger.
It seems like a very long time since we first met Ezra as a teenage con-artist with a promising yet undeveloped grasp of the Force. Since then, he’s spent the show gradually honing his command of the Force, ending up as the apprentice of Kanan Jarrus and developing into a promising Jedi in his own right.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the “Star Wars Rebels” season finale episodes “A Fool’s Hope” and “Family Reunion and Farewell.”]
“Star Wars Rebels” just ended its four-season run, but we’re not ready to say goodbye to some of our favorite characters yet. And judging by that last scene in which Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein) showed up to fetch Sabine Wren (Tiya Sircar) so they could find wherever Ezra Bridger (Taylor Gray) went when the Purrgil jumped through hyperspace, there’s a built-in story to tell right there.
Disney should jump on this spinoff concept right now, if they haven’t already. Who knows? Maybe it’s all under wraps at the moment, but seeing as how there has been no official announcement yet, we’re going to lay out our best arguments as to why this needs to get a greenlight (and no, we’re not talking about a green lightsaber) now.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the “Star Wars Rebels” series finale.]
“Star Wars Rebels” came to an end Monday night with some loss, an empire defeated, and a new quest for two fan-favorite characters. Sabine Wren (Tiya Sircar) and Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein) would team up to find young Jedi Ezra Bridger (Taylor Gray), who had helped save the day, but in the process had to go with the hyperspace-jumping purrgil to who knows where in the galaxy.
At an advance screening of the finale, co-creator Dave Filoni explained why he wanted this pairing to happen.
“I’ve seen the original trilogy of ‘Star Wars’ that people like so much, and it’s not like a death count,” he said. “It’s a rather positive outcome, which I enjoy. I’ve always felt that the best stories end, and then other stories begin and there’s no better way than to take two of my favorite characters and have them ride off into the sunset.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the “Star Wars Rebels” season finale episodes “A Fool’s Hope” and “Family Reunion and Farewell.”
“Star Wars Rebels” has disbanded. After four satisfying seasons, numerous covert operations, flirtations with the Dark Side, tests of character, breathtaking planet-scapes, and exciting cameos, young Ezra Bridger (Taylor Gray) fulfilled his destiny as a Jedi and saved his planet of Lothal. In the process, he was whisked away by the Purrgil, those giant purple space whales that also have the ability to fly through hyperspace. His fellow rebel Sabine Wren (Tiya Sircar) was lost for a while afterwards, but finally realized she had the task to go find him with the help of Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein), the “Clone Wars” fan-favorite character making a cameo one last time.
After Kanan Jarrus’ (Freddie Prinze, Jr.) big sacrifice only a few episodes ago, this ending allowed the series to go out on a note of hope. It was somewhat unexpected, especially knowing that the events that would follow, leading up...
