Exclusive: Banijay UK CEO Patrick Holland is focusing on M&a and talent, and is rewarding high-performing labels with extra investment as he enters his first Mipcom Cannes in the new role.
In his first interview since replacing Peter Salmon in May, Holland told Deadline he is keen to look into buying more labels now that the Endemol Shine Group acquisition is fully complete, starting with Chloe producer Mam Tor Productions, which was revealed by Deadline this morning.
The former BBC Factual boss and BBC Two Controller has taken on a vast job, tying Banijay’s multiple UK labels together creatively and strategically since the departure of both Salmon and subsequently Chief Creative Officer Lucinda Hicks, which meant his role expanded before he had even started.
“I don’t think Banijay is necessarily seen as a major player in M&a in the UK,” he said. “You don’t just buy...

Banijay Sets Up Scripted Label Led By ‘Intergalactic’ And ‘Good Karma Hospital’ Producer Iona Vrolyk
Banijay UK is launching a scripted label led by Intergalactic and Good Karma Hospital producer Iona Vrolyk.
Vrolyk, who has been a development exec for Banijay-owned Peaky Blinders producer Tiger Aspect since 2013, will launch Double Dutch with immediate effect.
The label is targeting popular, character-led returning series and will link up with key collaborators such as showrunner Julie Gearey, with whom Vrolyk has worked on Sky One’s Intergalactic and ITV2’s mid-2000s show Secret Diary of a Call Girl.
Vrolyk said the pair already have “exciting developments underway.”
Banijay UK CEO Lucinda Hicks hailed Vrolyk’s “rock-solid reputation for delivering popular, returning titles.”
“She understands how to be commercial but won’t compromise on creative ambition,” she added. “Start-ups are hard, we all know that, but when you have exceptional talent like Iona at the helm, the decision to just go for it is made easy.”

The time is February 2020. The place? Manchester’s Space Studios, on the extraordinary set of Intergalactic, Sky’s new sci-fi drama series. From an immersive set, cramped within the bowels of a prison ship, to concept art of stunning sci-fi landscapes, there’s nothing to remind us of a mundane present that will, only a month later, come to seem like something of a lost utopia.
Well, almost nothing. The screensaver on one of the ship’s computers bears the logo of Her Majesty’s Government. Is time travel involved, then? Nope. It’s a relic from previous work on Cobra, the Sky political drama about the collapse of British society in the aftermath of a disaster. Oddly fitting, really…
Mercifully, we come back to the future. First things first, though: this isn’t the galaxy as we know it. “We are set 150 years in the future,” explains producer Iona Vrolyk.
