Ariane Labed's September Says won the Hitchcock D'Or prize for Best Film in Dinard Photo: Courtesy Dinard Festival of British and Irish Film The directorial debut by Ariane Labed (a French actor born in Greece) who tells the story of two bonded siblings inhabiting their own world in September Says, has won the Hitchcock d'Or for Best Film at the Dinard Festival of British and Irish Film.
The film captures the fragility of adolescence. Screen International praised its "preciseness and intimacy, brought to life by performances from Mia Tharia and Pascale Kann, assisted by Rakhee Thakrar as the single mother who loves them both but cannot fully enter the private sanctum of their sisterhood.”

Weird sisters have been spinning their witchy webs in stories dating back to Greek mythology, which included a macabre trio of sisters who passed a single eye between them. There is something of that sense of a closed circle of unknowable femininity between the two teenage girls in September Says, the first film to be directed by Greek Weird Wave actor Ariane Labed, based on the 2020 novel Sisters by Daisy Johnson and set between England and Ireland.
July (Mia Tharia) is timid, a new girl at the high school where her sister September (Pascale Kann) already is marked as unruly, aggressive and peculiar, inclined to bullying; she will appoint herself as her sister’s protector. July is relieved to hang back, even when there is a hint that her sister’s control-freakery might include commanding the weather. There is a whiff of the witch about her, too.

There is a subgenre that basks in the creaturely natures of girls and women. Forget the ethereal sisters of “The Virgin Suicides” for here are some hot messes. Found in the literature of Shirley Jackson, Angela Carter and Deborah Levy and in films by Josephine Decker and Luna Carmoon, this is a mode of characterisation that delights in stripping away the illusion of a “fairer sex” in order to marinate in the feminine grotesque.
Ariane Labed’s entry to this canon, her directorial feature debut “September Says,” is infused with her own history as a Greek New Wave actress. There are shades of her break-out role in Yorgos Lanthimos’ claustrophobic family drama “Dogtooth” and a callback to her animal impressions in Athina Rachel Tsangari’s sublime, underrated “Attenberg.” Otherwise, Labed follows the sketchy map laid out by Daisy Johnson’s source novel, “Sisters.”

Timothée Chalamet’s magical, musical candyman is coming to Max.
“Wonka” will make its streaming debut exclusively on Max on Friday, March 8, Warner Bros. Discovery announced Friday.
The movie — featuring Chalamet in the title role — tells the origin story of Willy Wonka, following him as a young man as he becomes “the world’s greatest inventor, magician and chocolate-maker,” per the studio. The family film co-stars Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key and Hugh Grant as an Oompa-Loompa.
“Wonka” has surpassed $600 million at the global box office, on an estimated $125 million budget. The film is director Paul King’s highest-grossing film, surpassing 2014’s “Paddington” and its 2017 sequel. It is Chalamet’s biggest movie at the international box office, although Warner Bros.’s “Dune: Part Two,” which opens March 1, could surpass “Wonka.”

The Timothée Chalamet-led Wonka scored an opening day gross of $14.4 million from 4,203 theaters at the Friday box office, putting it on course to earn $38 million or more in its North American opening.
That’s a promising start for a musical, a genre that has struggled in recent times. From Warner Bros. and Harry Potter franchise producer David Heyman, Wonka is a whimsical origin tale about the magical candyman Willy Wonka, who was played by Gene Wilder in the classic movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Audiences bestowed Wonka with an A- CinemaScore, while 60 percent of Friday ticket buyers were between the ages of 18 and 34. The largest quad was 18 to 24 at 33 percent, while another 10 percent of ticket buyers were between 13 and 17, underscoring Chalamet’s star status with younger moviegoers. Wonka is skewing slightly female so far, or 54 percent.

This post contains minor spoilers for "Wonka."
When Warner Bros. announced that they were going to make a prequel to "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" focused on a young Willy Wonka, it felt like all of Hollywood's worst sensibilities wrapped in one neat little package. A seemingly unnecessary prequel driven by commercialism with a hip star -- in this case
Timothée Chalamet -- anchoring the whole thing to try and sell it to the masses. Yet, when "Paddington" director Paul King signed on to helm the project, it raised some eyebrows. Could the man beyond two of the most inescapably charming movies of the last decade work his magic here as well? The answer is largely yes. We're not here to discuss whether "Wonka" is as good as "Paddington" or anything like that, but it is worth pointing out that these movies do have a key element in common.

The Christmas season has officially kicked off at the box office, as Wonka sets out to warm moviegoers’ hearts with a whimsical origin tale about the iconic candyman from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
From Warner Bros. and Harry Potter franchise producer David Heyman, the musical started off its North American run late Thursday with a promising $3.5 million in preview grosses from 3,400 theaters (family films aren’t necessarily known for sporting huge preview grosses). Wonka matched the preview gross of box office sensation Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which opened to $35 million domestically.
Tracking suggests Wonka will likewise debut in the $35 million to $40 million range. By Friday, it will be playing in 4,203 locations, including Imax and all other premium large formats.

They were all young once: Don Corleone and Darth Vader, Butch and Sundance, Hannibal and Leatherface, Maleficent and Cruella. The joyous strains of “Pure Imagination” lead into an equally joyous celebration of life – and chocolate – in Warner Bros Pictures’ Wonka. Movie fans could have had a one-two Timothée Chalamet punch if Dune 2 hadn’t been pulled from the theatrical release calendar. But for now, Chalamaniacs will have to settle for seeing the ever-charming actor light up the screen in the prequel to 1971’s Willa Wonka & The Chocolate Factory.
Chalamet is no Gene Wilder, but then again, no one can fill Wilder’s shoes. Not even Johnny Depp came close in 2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Still, comparisons aside, Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name) proved to be an excellent choice to play the overly optimistic chocolatier with huge dreams and an even bigger heart.

Gene Wilder delivered such a perfectly eccentric performance in 1971's beloved classic "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" that it's hard to imagine anyone else in the role. Tim Burton and Johnny Depp tried to make Roald Dahl's world their own back in 2005 with mixed results and a much more zany, quirky take on the character went in a much different direction.
When it comes to "Wonka," director Paul King, best known for the delightful "Paddington" movies, attempts to bring a dose of joy and kindness to the chocolatey world of Willy Wonka with an origin story that finds Hollywood's young heartthrob Timothée Chalamet taking on the role of the young chocolatier as he tries to carve out a name for himself in the candy industry in a European town dominated by a chocolate cartel. Run by three titans of the industry, Slugworth (Paterson Joseph), Prodnose (Matt Lucas), and...

In his Paddington movies, Paul King folded animation and live action together into delightful all-ages adventures, selling a message of community and acceptance with spry wit and disarming sweetness, not to mention Ben Whishaw’s impeccable voice work, imbuing the gentle ursine protagonist with genuine heart. Depending on your appetite for sugary excess, you might embrace the director’s Wonka as more of the same. Or you might find the qualities that distinguished his previous hits get steamrolled here by strained whimsy, an aggressive charm that wears you down rather than lifts you up.
Mercifully, we’re a long way from the garish nightmare of Tim Burton’s 2005 film of the Roald Dahl novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Timothée Chalamet as the young Willy Wonka is nothing like Johnny Depp’s creepy take on the role. Who hasn't wanted to watch a feature-length prequel story explaining every little detail about how a figure as mysterious and enigmatic as Willy Wonka became, well, Willy Wonka in the first place? Actually, wait, don't answer that question. Let's agree to let Warner Bros. live in a chocolate-infused fantasy of its own making for just a little while longer -- one where hordes of eager audiences have been hungrily demanding to see Timothée Chalamet dressed up as Gonzo in "The Muppet Christmas Carol" trading barbs and one-liners with a pint-sized, orange-faced Hugh Grant as an Oompa-Loompa.
Then again, what do I know? Maybe that's exactly what the people want! I suppose there is something strangely compelling about Chalamet in "Wonka" putting on a silly affectation of Gene Wilder's unforgettable performance as the character in 1971's "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory," a movie that we're meant to consider as...

Netflix has debuted the trailer for the fourth and final season of its hit coming-of-age series “Sex Education,” complete with the tagline, “Get your tissues ready, let’s finish together.”
The British comedy continues to follow the journey of teen sex therapist Otis Millburn (Asa Butterfield) and his friends as they attend a new school with an entirely different culture than they’re accustomed to, while Otis’s love interest Maeve (Emma Mackey) has moved to the United States for college. The eight-episode final season will release on Netflix on Sept. 21, with a supersized, 83-minute series finale.
The first scene of the trailer shows Otis and Maeve adjusting to the distance between them. When Maeve sends Otis a nude photo, Otis is unsure about sending one in return. Other storylines explored in the new season include Otis’ realization that he isn’t the only sex therapist at his new school,...

It’s coming. It’s coming. It’s about to climax. The fourth and final season of the hit Netflix raunchy comedy Sex Education is set to premiere later this month. And as part of the foreplay, Netflix has released a new trailer for the British show that stars Asa Butterfield, Emma Mackey and Gillian Anderson. Set to the tune of Meatloaf’s popular (and meme-able) hit “I Would Do Anything For Love,” the season 4 trailer is light on plot elements and heavy on emotion. The series celebrates its curtain call by cheekily telling fans to “break out the tissues.”
The trailer has been released by Netflix and the official season 4 synopsis reads,
Following the closure of Moordale Secondary, Otis and Eric now face a new frontier – their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College. Otis is nervous about setting up his new clinic, whilst Eric is praying they won’t be losers again.

Netflix wants fans of its British teen comedy Sex Education to “finish together” in the trailer for the show’s final season.
The two-and-a-half minute first look at the fourth season teases a busy farewell to the series, which helped catapult or bolster the careers of current and former stars, including Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Simone Ashley and Asa Butterfield. Set to the Meat Loaf classic “I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That),” the trailer sees Butterfield’s Otis and Mackey’s Maeve grappling with the intricacies — including well-shot nudes — of a long distance relationship as she attends the prestigious U.S. school, Wallace University.
Gatwa’s Eric can also be seen realizing his anxieties over how he and Otis not being losers again may be overblown as he further embraces himself, and encourages other Moordale Secondary classmates to as well. And at home, Gillian Anderson...

The last season of Sex Education has a crowded lesson plan. The series returns to Netflix on Sept. 21 with its teenage and adult characters equally as misdirected in their love lives and sense of purpose. “People are doing all these new things, and I feel like I’m getting left behind,” Otis (Asa Butterfield) admits in the latest full-length trailer for the show’s fourth and final season.

Saying goodbye to Sex Education will not be easy.
Many TV shows stay on the air long past their expiration date, but Sex Education Season 4 looks to be the perfect place to end the Netflix comedy.
In the official trailer for the final season, we see storylines come to dramatic conclusions as everyone reacts differently to the events of the prior season.

Get ready to dive back into a world of “pure imagination” with the first trailer for “Wonka.” Timothee Chalamet takes on the top-hatted purveyor of sweets, Willy Wonka, for a new take on the character that shows just how the character became so acclaimed, from “Paddington” director Paul King.
King crafts a magical, fantastical world wherein a young Willy Wonka arrives in London with dreams of opening his own chocolate shop. Unfortunately for him, the “Chocolate Cartel” won’t let him, leading Wonka to try to find a way to make his chocolate new and unique. There’s a lot of story packed into this trailer and not necessarily callbacks to the original film. If anything, the final frames introduce us to Hugh Grant’s Oompa Loompa, who whips out a flute and starts playing the tune from the 1971 film.

Netflix’s first teaser trailer for the upcoming fourth season of Sex Education was accompanied by bad news for the show’s fans. Season four will be the show’s final season.
In an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, series creator Laurie Nunn revealed the fourth season jumps forward a few months after the events of the season three finale.
“Maeve is in America, which is where we left her on the bus, going off to study. The Moordale Secondary students are starting at a new school called Cavendish College, which is very different from Moordale. It’s very progressive and woke, and it makes the Moordale students feel like they’re little fish in a big pond,” explained Nunn.
Returning cast members include Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, Aimee-Lou Wood, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells, and Kedar Williams-Stirling. Mimi Keene, George Robinson, Chinenye Ezeudu, Dua Saleh, Alistair Petrie, Samantha Spiro,...
