New CNN chief Mark Thompson may have plans to shake up the cable news channel’s offerings, but he isn’t messing with New Year’s Eve.
CNN said Monday that Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen will return as the hosts of its annual New Year’s Eve show, originating from New York’s Times Square.
The channel says that Sara Sidner and Cari Champion will be joining as co-hosts, taking over at 12:30 a.m. ahead of the central time zone celebrations. Sidner and Champion will host from Auditorium Shores in Austin, Texas. Former CNN anchor Don Lemon previously held down the late night hours for CNN.
CNN says that Richard Quest will report from the crowds in Times Square, with Stephanie Elam from Atlantis, Paradise Island in the Bahamas, Randi Kaye from Key West, Florida, Gary Tuchman and his daughter Lindsay from Las Cruces, New Mexico, and Boris Sanchez from Miami,...

Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen will return with a CNN New Year’s Eve special from Times Square.
The Dec. 31 special will start at 8 p.m. Et, with Sara Sidner and Cari Champion taking over at 12:30 a.m. from Auditorium Shores in Austin, Texas, to ring in the New Year from the central time zone. Missing this year: Don Lemon who had been a fixture of coverage with his buzzed reports. Lemon was let go from the network in April.
Cooper and Cohen have hosted the event since 2017. Before that, Cooper hosted for 10 years with Kathy Griffin, who was dropped from the broadcast after posting an image of herself with a fake bloodied head of Donald Trump.
Also featured in the coverage: Richard Quest, who will report from the crowds of Times Square; Stephanie Elam, who will be at Atlantis, Paradise Island in the Bahamas; Randi Kaye, who will be in Key West,...

At least one auld acquaintance won’t be present for CNN’s annual coverage of the nation’s New Year’s Eve festivities.
Sara Sidner and Cari Champion will take over the Warner Bros. Discovery network’s wee-hours broadcast on New Year’s Eve, holding forth from Austin, Texas, during a slot that for years served as a showcase for raucous antics from Don Lemon. Lemon and CNN parted ways earlier this year after management tried to move him from a prominent primetime show to the network’s morning program.
Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen will return as hosts of CNN’s main coverage of the evening. The broadcast will feature performances by Enrique Iglesias, Maroon 5, Jonas Brothers, Flo Rida, Miranda Lambert, Darius Rucker and Rod Stewart and live interviews with Patti Labelle, Jeremy Renner, Neil Patrick Harris, Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers.

Jim Acosta’s mother recently sent him a text about his first stint as a weekend anchor for CNN. She loved his expression, perhaps with good reason. “I think my mother hasn’t seen my smile on TV in four years,” he says.
Wearing a grim visage might have come naturally. Acosta spent the past few years as CNN’s chief White House correspondent. The job is already a tough one that typically demands round-the-clock focus. In addition to covering the previous administration, however, Acosta frequently clashed with President Donald Trump on camera, and generated more than a few headlines about the network and himself in the process.
But Trump didn’t win a new term in office. And Acosta did.

CNN will bring Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen together for the fourth year in a row for “CNN New Year’s Eve,” where the two hosts will undoubtedly fill the night reflecting on the insane year that was 2020. Unlike previous years, Cooper and Cohen won’t be surrounded by a crowd crush of people — you can thank the pandemic for that. But they still plan to broadcast their show live from the historic spot as they do every year.
The night will kick off at 8 p.m. Et, and include performances from John Mayer, Snoop Dogg, Patti Labelle, Jimmy Buffett, Carole Baskin, Josh Groban, Leslie Jordan, Dulce Sloan, Desus & Mero, Kylie Minogue, Aloe Blacc, Goo Goo Dolls and Jon Bon Jovi.
If music’s not your thing and you’re feeling a bit of wanderlust, don’t worry — the night will also feature appearances from CNN’s Ana Cabrera, Stephanie Elam,...

When Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen try to show CNN viewers the sights and sounds of New Year’s Eve in Times Square this year, they will face one of their biggest challenges: There won’t be any.
The throngs of people who come to see the fabled ball drop in what is billed as New York’s “Crossroads of the World” won’t be in attendance, due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. For Cooper and Cohen, however, the show must go on.
People at home will want to watch and ring out a terrible year, says Cooper. “We want it to be a New Year’s Eve without all the mishegoss. You don’t have to have all the sturm and drang. You can just stay home and watch us go through it,” he says, in an interview. Besides, says Cohen, “I certainly pledge to get Anderson as...

Another year in the books, and another long night with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen is in store for everyone who tunes in to CNN on New Year’s Eve.
“New Year’s Eve Live With Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen” will see CNN’s ubiquitous Cooper ushering in 2020 with a five-hour show talking about the year that was and chatting with correspondents around the country to see how everyone is celebrating.
And this marks Cohen’s third year co-hosting alongside Cooper, after taking over the gig from Kathy Griffin in 2017 after that whole ordeal with the mockup of President Donald Trump’s head.
The event kicks off at 8 p.m. Et on CNN and runs through 12:30 a.m., then Cooper and Cohen will throw things over to Brooke Baldwin and Don Lemon in Nashville at the Music City Midnight Celebration, where they will ring in the new year for the central time zone.

New Year’s Eve is the night on which most CNN anchors let their hair down. Well, except for Anderson Cooper.
Cooper has been CNN’s on-air host for New Year’s Eve since 2002, and his most memorable moments from the stint typically surface as he tries to rein in others who appear with him – hoping Kathy Griffin will tone down her antics, reacting to Don Lemon in New Orleans, and, most recently, trying to keep current co-host Andy Cohen from going overboard with visitors.
“I just try to keep the trains running on time,” says Cooper during a recent interview. “It’s always some sort of disaster waiting to happen, whether it’s Andy insulting one of the guests by asking a question that a guest has no desire to be asked about — and so, yeah, I wince at things a lot, I guess.”
Cooper is typically demure, but...

Over New Year’s Eve weekend, Skrillex and Marshmello descended upon Miami’s Fountainbleau to ring in 2017 in style. Among the evening’s festivities was a performance between the two DJs and Justin Bieber of his song “Sorry,” but that was far from the highlight of the party. In an attempt to appeal to the youthful crowds, CNN held down an awkward interview with Skrillex and his helmeted friend that really has to be seen to be believed.
While the cross pollination between mainstream culture and Edm continues to grow stronger with each passing year, the CNN interview is a reminder that dance music isn’t completely overground just yet. Conducted by father-daughter reporters Gary and Lindsay Tuchman, the conversation quickly takes a turn for the unbearably cringeworthy as it becomes clear that the two are a bit out of their element.
For starters, the interview is conducted too close to the stage,...
