Doctor Who mastermind Russell T. Davies is weighing in on the controversy surrounding Netflix‘s smash hit series Baby Reindeer.
The writer said in an interview with The Times that the BBC would have been “much stricter” when it comes to disguising the real-life identities of the characters created by Scottish comedian Richard Gadd. “Compliance and editorial policy drives us mad here but I sleep at night,” Davies said.
His comments follow a whirlwind of scrutiny for Netflix producers, and even fans of the series, who took it upon themselves to try and unveil the real people depicted on the show, including the trans woman Gadd’s character dates, played by Nava Mau, and the TV producer who sexually assaults him, portrayed by Tom Goodman-Hill.
On Thursday, British host Piers Morgan will interview a woman named Fiona Harvey who claims to be the inspiration behind the show’s stalker, Martha.

Succession creator Jesse Armstrong has talked up the benefits of writers rooms for shows of “scale and length” as he threw his support behind the ongoing writers strike.
Armstrong was in conversation with journalist Marina Hyde on the final day of the Edinburgh TV Festival on Friday in the UK, and offered his analysis of writers rooms, which is one of the key sticking points for the AMPTP and WGA negotiations in the U.S.
“If budgets are available and we can get supported, they’re a great way to run some shows of scale and length, so I’m very supportive of the strike,” he said, adding that residuals and AI were issues the WGA was right to be concerned over.
“It’s not like a training program when my fellow writers are on set with me. It’s to make the show better,” he added.

The cast has been set for Sam Mendes’ upcoming HBO comedy pilot “The Franchise,” which is set in the world of franchise moviemaking.

Based on an idea by Mendes, the story follows a hopeful crew trapped inside the dysfunctional, nonsensical, joyous hellscape of franchise superhero movie-making. Martin McDonagh’s drama is a timely winner at the Golden Globes, but the best director snub for Lady Bird’s Greta Gerwig still stings
The big question of this year’s Golden Globes was how the Hollywood Foreign Press Association would reflect the issue currently dominating Hollywood: the #MeToo movement. Things hadn’t got off to the greatest start – already before the gongs had been handed out , it had been criticised for failing to include a woman in the best director nomination list.
The event itself though immediately acknowledged the elephant in the living room, and put it centre stage in Seth Meyers’ opening monologue; he conceded the irony of having a man present the show, although pointed out, with some justification, that potential women presenters might be reluctant to associate themselves with the prize-giving establishment just at this moment. And the Globes ended with a rousing speech from Oprah Winfrey,...

Readers' panel: Following the actor's announcement that he is "retiring from all public life," we'd like to hear from Shia fans who are proud to say they enjoy his work
These are trying times for fans of Shia Labeouf, actor-cum-prolific negative-headline generator whose recent activities, as elegantly dissected by Marina Hyde, include:
• Revealing he sent Lars Von Trier pictures of his penis in order to secure the role in Nymphomaniac.
• Doing acid in front of Ron Weasley while filming a scene for his other forthcoming move, The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman.
• Admitting to plagiarising all manner of stuff, primarily the work of graphic novelist Daniel Clowes in his most recent short film.
On Friday, Shia Labeouf posted on Twitter that he is "retiring from all public life" following "the recent attacks against my artistic integrity". He added "My love goes out to those who have supported me", and finally...

The big story
Hollywood screenwriter Joe Eszterhas has accused Mel Gibson of anti-semitism after the actor and director, along with studio Warner Brothers, rejected his script about a famous Jewish military victory. In a letter published by American film blog The Wrap, Eszterhaus alleged that Gibson has used anti-semitic slurs around him on numerous occasions and has acted aggressively towards the screenwriter and his family.
"I've come to the conclusion that the reason you won't make 'The Maccabees' is the ugliest possible one. You hate Jews," said Eszterhaus, best known in Hollywood for writing Basic Instinct. He also said that Gibson only planned to make the film, which would track the 167Bc revolt of the Judean state against the Seleucid empire, to deflect "continuing charges of anti-Semitism which have dogged you, charges which have crippled your career".

Marina Hyde pieces together the totally heartwarming story behind Lindsay Lohan's Indian Journey, which airs tonight on BBC3
Once more to a familiar furrow, stardust-seekers, as Lost in Showbiz asks the sub-rhetorical question: what do you reckon about "documentaries" like Peaches Geldof on Islam? "Finding a celebrity who genuinely cares about the issue really helps pull in a crowd that wouldn't otherwise switch on," is the view of BBC controller Danny Cohen. "But you have to be careful. If you get a rent-a-celeb, this audience can spot it a mile off."
Mm. Spotted 50 miles off - lumbering knickerless over the horizon - comes Ms Lindsay Lohan, whom you might recall was BBC3's somewhat leftfield pick to explain the issue of child trafficking in India to its audience.
Contemplating the hire, this column fell back on that old cliché about Lindsay not even being able to get arrested in Hollywood,...

Diva presenters, bad dance, graceless hosts. Marina Hyde looks back at a starry night
Ladies, gentlemen, and non-members of the academy: welcome to G2's almost-live coverage of the heartbreakingly succinct Oscars telecast, which – despite the fact that no one would dream of doing anything as transgressive as swearing – is being brought to you with a 24-hour time delay.
Right off the bat I want to join the salutes for The Hurt Locker – a movie just too damn important to bother with stuff like narrative, and which will one day be deemed just as hilariously underrated as American Beauty (which, you might dimly recall, won a mere five Oscars) and Dances With Wolves (a paltry haul of seven, including a best director statuette for Mister Kevin Costner). As for James Cameron's hopes for Avatar, his groundbreaking, record-breaking movie . . . well, they are with Eywa now.
This was indeed a night...

Like many, I really hated last night's Oscars. But for the moment I'll try to put my complaints behind me (or elsewhere), mostly for the sake of my mother, who still loves the Oscars and often told me "if you can't say anything nice, don't say it at all." Well, by the logic of the classic phrase I only need to find some positive things to say about some of the honorees in order to allow for my usual negativity. Anyway, I agree with Dustin that it should be about celebrating great films and performances. So here goes:
1. I'm glad The Cove won, though most Americans will still ignore the film just as they do other documentaries, even those with cameos from the Heroes cheerleader and produced by the white guy who basically went blackface to play an Indian in series of popular movies about robot tolerance.
2. I'm glad Mo'Nique won,...

Marina Hyde draws your attention to her favourite story of the Oscars build-up thus far - Sarah Palin and entourage going rogue in a gifting suite
Well, they're almost upon us. The 82nd Annual Academy Awards - the Oscars of the movie industry - are mere scores of hours away.
Lost in Showbiz will naturally be watching the notoriously succinct ceremony all through Sunday night, in order to give you a sleep-deprived, hungover account for Tuesday's paper. I know! In terms of raw, reactive immediacy, it's a bit like contributing to a quarterly defence periodical. I'm hoping to imbue observations like "Omg what was Taylor Lautner doing presenting an award?!?!?!?!" with that long view quality.
Anyhow, in the meantime, might I just draw your attention to my favourite story of the build-up thus far - Sarah Palin and entourage going rogue in a gifting suite.

Marina Hyde on another selfless celebrity humanitarian mission
Our Quote of the Day comes from Jennifer Aniston, who is currently sojourning in a $9,000-a-night villa in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Jennifer is on holiday with close friends, close Friends, and "close friends" - including Sheryl Crow, Courteney Cox and Gerard Butler. Actually, I say holiday, but it would help if you saw it as more of a humanitarian mission.
As Jennifer tells Access Hollywood: "[Gerard Butler] said to me, 'You come to Mexico all the time and Mexico is really hurting right now because of the swine flu and the drug trafficking and all of this sort of stuff but it's not all of Mexico. These people survive on us coming down and spending money and coming here to these beautiful places. It sort of made sense to sort of say 'Hey, let's help out Mexico.'"

Marina Hyde on Vinnie Jones, Celebrity Big Brother, and an exercise in damage limitation
Some spellbindingly self-aware public utterances from cinema's Vinnie Jones, who placed what I imagine he found a rather disappointing third in Celebrity Big Brother. The self-styled national treasure doesn't appear to be handling his failure to beat Jordan's no-mark boyfriend awfully well. Or indeed his failure to beat Jordan's no-mark erstwhile boyfriend.
Since leaving the Bungalow of the Damned, Vinnie has been fighting a misplaced rearguard action, telling reporters that the show's producers misrepresented what sort of people would be free to spend upwards of three weeks sharing a bedroom and participating in humiliating tasks in a soon-to-be-axed reality TV show. "They led me to believe there would be a higher calibre of celebrities," says the straight-to-dvd legend. "I thought the level of celebrity was going to be much higher to be honest."
Presumably Vinnie has...

Marina Hyde enjoys the trailers for John Travolta's new terror flick, From Paris With Love
As the voiceover growls: "The risk has never been greater …"
Cashing in on the total now-ness of terrorism comes this beguiling pair of trailers for John Travolta's new movie, in which he plays the FBI's "top operative", an earringed, gay biker-styled special agent named Charlie Wax - a name as inexplicably amusing to Lost in Showbiz as Keanu Reeves's immortal Point Break character Johnny Utah. Who was, of course, also an FBI agent (Malibu division).
What to say about this nuanced rumination on post-Bush homeland security, in which Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays Wax's reluctant desk-johnny accomplice? I guess the best thing would be that Travolta - so luxuriantly tressed in real life - really owns his character's baldness, and it's impossible not to feel optimistic about America's chances against terrorists when you...

From trashing the Terminator to praising the baboon – here's a selection of the stories you chose as your favourite in 2009
Anything by Lucy Mangan, because of the hooting hilarity that invariably ensues (Wookey Hole wants to hire a witch. Well, I can cackle ... G2 shortcuts, 9 July) – Sadie Clifford, Stockport
The greatest named place in Britain is inviting applicants for possibly the country's greatest job – to become the modern-day counterpart to the legendary witch of Wookey Hole.
The Somerset caves have long been home to a witch turned to stone in the middle ages by a Benedictine monk with a flair for that kind of thing called Father Bernard. Now, however, the popular tourist attraction is in need of someone with a wider skill set than that possessed by the average vaguely person-shaped rocky outcropping, and is advertising for a living witch to take up residence in the caves at weekends,...

Critics of the film Avatar are only revealing their own stupidity, discovers Marina Hyde
Quote of the day comes from director James Cameron's interview with Playboy, in which there is so much to enjoy that I urge you to discover it more fully for yourself. For now, we join the terminally self-effacing auteur as he is asked to contemplate the critical reaction to his forthcoming game changer/universe changer/damp squib. "Avatar is made very consciously for movie fans," he bristles.
If critics like it, fine. I can't say I won't read the reviews, because I may not be able to resist. I spent a couple of decades in the capricious world of being judged by those not knowledgeable about the depth and history of film and with whom I would not want to have a conversation - with a few notable exceptions. Why would I want to be judged by them?...
