Mon Laferte, Emilia, DannyLux, and More on What’s Inspiring Them Right Now
Image
Extravagant dresses, ear-to-ear smiles, and a palpable excitement filled the Latin Grammys red carpet last Thursday at Miami’s Kaseya Center as the Latin Recording Academy celebrated 25 years of the awards ceremony. But as the stars stopped by to speak to Rolling Stone, some gave a little look about what the next year in music might look like for them.

Mon Laferte, whose album Autopoiética won Best Alternative Music Album, revealed she’s already started to write songs for her next project. And her ex-lovers should beware! “I’m writing about all of my ex-relationships,...

Bad Bunny, Shakira, Peso Pluma: A Guide to the Latin Nominees at the 2025 Grammys
Image
The Grammy nominations are out today, and for Latin music, it’s another year that sees language artists left out of most major categories. That’s a bummer because in 2023, it seemed briefly like the rides were turning when Bad Bunny’s massive LP Un Verano Sin Ti made history as the first Spanish-language album nominated for Album Of The Year.

Since then, though, most Latin artists have been relegated back to specific categories, like Best Latin Pop Album, Best Música Urbana Album, Best Latin Rock or Alternative, and Best Música Mexicana Album.

Genre Innovators Will Face Off With Veterans in the Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album Grammy Race
Image
Leading up to the Grammy nominations on Nov. 8, Rolling Stone is breaking down 13 different categories. For each, we’re predicting the nominees, as well as who will (and who should) win on Grammy night.

The Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album has always been somewhat of a grab-bag; it’s so broad that anyone can argue that nearly any album fits in here. The projects that tend to do best are either straight-ahead rock or hard-to-categorize experimentalism: As examples, Rosalia’s Motomami took the prize in 2023, while...

‘Mon Laferte, Te Amo’ Netflix Review: Documentary On The Chilean-Mexican Musician Is A Fascinating Watch
Image
The first thing I did after watching Mon Laferte, Te Amo was go on a bit of a dive of her work on Spotify. I was unfamiliar with the Chilean-Mexican singer-composer, and the Netflix documentary turned out to be fascinating enough for me to look into her. In this article, I’m going to share my thoughts on the documentary, but before that, let us run a quick recap.

What Happens in the Documentary?

Mon Laferte, Te Amo is a biopic where the celebrated singer herself narrates her own life story. The narrative is majorly nonlinear, but it’s not at all difficult to follow.Mon (whose real name is Norma Momserrat Bustamante Laferte) lets us know that the primary inspiration behind her music was her grandmother, who also happened to be a musician, and used to write and compose her own music. That was a rarity in those days,...

Empire Spotlight: Owen Teague Has The Keys To The Kingdom
Image
The rising star on transitioning from man to beast for Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes.

When Owen Teague was four years old, he saw Disney’s Beauty And The Beast and wanted to be in it. Not do a voice in it — actually be in it. “My mum was like, ‘Um, okay, sure, but that’s an animation. There are community theatres you can audition for?’” So he started doing community theatre, mostly musicals. Then, in 2005, Peter Jackson’s King Kong arrived. Seven-year-old Owen was bewitched. When his mum explained that King Kong was played by an actual guy in a performance- capture suit, Teague saw his future.

Almost 20 years later, he is that guy. In Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, Teague plays the lead, Noa, a young chimpanzee born nearly 300 years after the events of the last film in the franchise. After a successful audition...

How Mon Laferte Reinvented Herself On Her New Album ‘Autopoiética’
Image
Mon Laferte is feeling invincible. After turning 40, growing comfortable in her motherhood, and reflecting on her unique journey to stardom, the Chilean singer-songwriter has tapped into a special moment in her creativity. It’s like she’s been reborn.

But Laferte would rather refer to her state of reinvention as “autopoiesis” — a term coined by Chilean biologists Francisco Varela and Humberto Maturana to describe the process of how cells auto-generate all the time. “The best example of this is when you get wounded and, in time, it heals,” the singer explains.

The Latin Rock or Alternative Grammy Could Come Down to These Rockeros and Genre-Benders
Image
Leading up to the Grammy nominations on Nov. 10, Rolling Stone is breaking down 16 different categories. For each, we’re predicting the nominees, as well as who will (and who should) win on Grammy night.

This category can feel like a grab bag of indie and alternative experiments that don’t fit elsewhere (Rosalía’s Motomami at the last Grammy show). El Sonido Live Is Capturing the Unstoppable Energy of Latin America’s Indie Scene
Image
Over the past decade, the Pacific Northwest has steadily blossomed into a stateside haven for fresh, alternative sounds from Latin America. In Portland, parties such as Gran Ritmos and Tropidahl transformed nightlife by celebrating diasporic hybrids of cumbia, dembow, and bhangra. Meanwhile, in Seattle, the psych and punk bedlam of Freakout Fest rejuvenated its avant curation with continent-spanning talent ranging from rising acts like Margaritas Podridas and Los Esplifs to bonafide legends including Os Mutantes and Los Dugs Dugs.

One of the driving forces behind the scene’s curatorial terraforming is radio institution Kexp,...

How iLe Made Herself Whole in a Broken World
Image
Stepping onstage at Brooklyn’s Public Records one night late in October, Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Ileana Cabra carried herself delicately, dressed like an indie Alice in Wonderland in a puff-sleeved mini dress. The artist, who goes by iLe, was getting ready to serenade the crowd with her brassy voice while performing songs from her new album Nacarile — and didn’t look at all like she was about to burst into a bullish rap. But halfway through “Ningún Lugar,” a slow rock number written with Argentine freestyle rapper Trueno, iLe launched...

Tell Me Más: How Resilience Influenced iLe's New Album, "Nacarile"
Image
When Ileana Cabra Joglar, known professionally as iLe takes the stage at Brooklyn's Public Records, it is to a round of raucous applause and whistles-something the Puerto Rican singer-songwriter is no doubt used to by now. As one-third of the reggaeton group Calle 13, iLe toured with her brothers, Eduardo Cabra Martinez and René Perez Joglar, performing at packed coliseums in Puerto Rico and arenas around the world before embarking on her own solo career. With her debut album, "iLevitable," she announced her arrival as a solo artist in triumphant fashion-embracing her own path and a sound independent of the one she'd cultivated alongside her brothers while snagging herself the Grammy for best Latin rock, urban, or alternative album. Now, that path has led her to Public Records, where before an intimate crowd she preps to preview her third and maybe most personal album yet, "Nacarile."

"It took a while for...

2022 Latin Grammys Song of the Year predictions: Will one of the year’s biggest hits win the biggest songwriting prize?
Image
The 2022 Latin Grammy nominations were announced on September 20, with the awards going out November 17. So who will win Latin music’s top songwriting award, Song of the Year?

SEE2022 Latin Grammy predictions: Record of the Year is a battle between young stars and old favorites

Let’s go through the process of elimination here. Ricky Martin‘s “A Veces Bien y A Veces Mal,” Daddy Yankee‘s “Agua,” and Mon Laferte‘s “Algo Es Mejor” are probably here in part due to being alphabetically high on the ballot, and since none of them made much noise, they will likely not win. While Carla Morrison and Fonseca are both highly respected artists, their respective songs “Encontrarme” and “Besos En La Frente” also didn’t really make much of an impact. Those five are likely the filler nominees.

A few other nominees have a slight chance. “Hentai” by Rosalía might be too polarizing for most voters,...

2022 Latin Grammy nominations list: Bad Bunny leads with 10, but can he finally win Album of the Year?
Image
Bad Bunny leads the 2022 Latin Grammy Award nominations with 10 bids including Album of the Year (“Un Verano Sin Ti“) and Record of the Year (“Ojitos Lindos”), but can he finally win top honors from the academy? Scroll down for the complete list of contenders in all categories.

SEEBillboard charts: Number-one albums of 2022

The Latin Recording Academy has been somewhat ambivalent about Bad Bunny, judging from his track record over the years. He has won four times, but only in urban genre categories. He lost his three previous Album of the Year bids (for “Yhlqmdlg” and “Oasis” in 2020 and “El Ultimo Tour Del Mundo” in 2021) and his previous Record of the Year nom (for “Vete” in 2020). However, Bad Bunny has emerged as the biggest crossover Latin star in the world. “Un Verano Sin Ti” has topped the all-genre, all-language Billboard 200 albums chart for 11 weeks, which is more than any album in six years.

Image
The 23rd Annual Latin Grammy Awards nominations are due on September 20, honoring the best music released from June 2021 through May 2022. This year the ceremony might see the return of veterans and buzzy superstars, all competing for top honors for their incredible work in Latin music. Let’s take a look at the biggest contenders.

Bad Bunny is poised to have a big nominations day. The urban star’s fourth album, “Un Verano Sin Ti,” has been a massive success and is arguably the biggest album of the year, topping Spotify charts all over the world and spending multiple weeks atop the Billboard 200 in the US. Bad Bunny is also no stranger to Latin Grammy success. His first album, “X100PRE,” won the Latin Grammy for Best Urban Music Album. He followed that up with “Yhlqmdlg,” which earned him five nominations including his first for Album of the Year; he ended...

About 20 years ago, Adrian Quesada was driving at night in his home base of Austin, Texas, when he heard something that made him turn up the volume: “Esclavo y Amo,” a psychedelic love song recorded in the 1970s by the Peruvian combo Los Pasteles Verdes.

“I had never heard anything like it,” recalls Quesada, the prolific multi-instrumentalist, founder of Black Pumas, and former member of Grupo Fantasma. “It sounded like a sample from a hip-hop song.”

Quesada had just discovered the world of psychedelic baladas that flourished beginning in the late Sixties,...

Latin Grammys 2021: ‘Patria Y Vida,’ Camilo, Rubén Blades, and Caetano Veloso Were the Night’s Biggest Winners
Image
Viewed through one lens, last night’s Latin Grammy Awards were full of unexpected awards and upsets. The 79-year-old Brazilian trailblazer Caetano Veloso and 24-year-old son Tom Veloso won over emerging stars like Rauw Alejandro and Camilo for Record of the Year; Panamanian salsero Rubén Blades beat out Bad Bunny, Natalia Lafourcade, and C. Tangana for Album of the Year; and the anthem “Patria Y Vida,” which soundtracked Cuban protests this summer, was chosen as Song of the Year over some of the biggest pop hits in recent months.

Mon Laferte Proudly Shows Off Pregnant Belly During Latin Grammys Performance
Image
The Chilean rocker Mon Laferte, who announced this year that she’s expecting her first child, proudly showed off her pregnant belly as she took the stage at the 2021 Latin Grammys alongside La Arrolladora Banda el Limon de Rene Camacho and Gloria Trevi. The mother-to-be removed an overcoat to reveal a two-piece mariachi-inspired outfit, nodding to the way in which she embraced elements of regional Mexican music on her album Seis.

She brought that vision to life onstage as she and La Arrolladora Banda el Limon sang a scorching version...

Latin Grammy Nominations Led by Camilo, Juan Luis Guerra, C. Tangana and Bad Bunny
Image
Colombian singer-songwriter Camilo dominated the announcement of the 2021 Latin Grammy Awards nominations, garnering 10, including nods in all three top categories — album of the year (for “Mis Manos”), record of the year (for “Vida de Rico” and “Amen”) and song of the year (for “Vida de Rico” and “Dios Así Lo Quiso”).

Also faring well with multiple nods were Dominican artist Juan Luis Guerra with six, Spanish rapper C. Tangana with five and Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny with four.

Most of these top-nominated artists have enjoyed multiple trips to the podium in previous years— especially Guerra, a 20-time Latin Grammy winner. C. Tangana and Bad Bunny have won twice before. But with his staggering 10 nominations this year, Camilo comes into the ceremony only ever having won once before, for last year’s best pop song (his acceptance appearance is pictured above).

The 22nd annual show airs on Univision Nov. 18 live at 8 p.

2021 Latin Grammys: Will Bad Bunny and Kali Uchis lead the way at these awards later this year?
Image
The Latin Grammy Awards, not to be confused with the Latin categories at the regular Grammys, honor the best music in the Latin-sphere, with contenders in both Spanish and Portuguese being eligible. This year in particular we have a lot of contenders, from big English-market crossovers to critically acclaimed gems. Let’s take a look at who could score big.

Massive crossover stars typically get recognized, so expect to see names like Bad Bunny and Kali Uchis come nominations day. The former has smashed this year with his hit song “Dákiti” featuring Jhay Cortez peaking at number-five on the Billboard Hot 100, which is rare for a Latin song. It also dominated the Hot Latin Songs chart and the Latin Airplay chart, as well as climbing high on the Rhythmic and Top 40 charts. Its parent album, “El Último Tour del Mundo,” is probably a lock for an Album of the Year...

How Zoé Keep Their Musical Karma Evolving After 20 Years
Image
“It’s something we have in our soul,” says León Larregui, the frontman of Mexico’s celebrated alt-rock band Zoé. “We’re telepathically connected, even from far away and without speaking.” That uncanny bond between Larregui and his bandmates — one he calls a “karmic sonic identity” — informed the band’s seventh album, Sonidos de Karmática Resonancia (or Sounds of Karmic Resonance), out April 16th. “Our songs, some of which we wrote separately, would even have the same notes,” he continues. “It’s like we’re channeling from the same source.

How the Chilean Uprising Fueled Francisca Valenzuela’s Feminist Opus, ‘La Fortaleza’
Augusto Pinochet
It’s been nearly five months since a wave of austerity measures, proposed by Chilean President Sebastián Piñera, sent Chile spiraling into civil unrest. Outside the grounds of the 60th annual Viña del Mar International Song Festival on Monday night — the longest-running music festival in Latin America — up to 800 protesters demanded justice for human rights violations committed by Chilean police and military during the 2019 protests — including but not limited to murder, rape, and torture.

Headlining Monday night’s show was 31-year-old Francisca Valenzuela, one of Chile’s most beloved, and outspoken,...

So, How Was Your Decade, Mon Laferte?
Mon Laferte
So, How Was Your Decade is a series in which the decade’s most innovative musicians answer our questionnaire about the people, places and things that shaped their decade. We’ll be rolling these pieces out throughout December.

Chilean singer-songwriter Mon Laferte has taken on several iterations of herself over the past decade. During the aughts, she was best known as Norma Monserrat Bustamante Laferte: recurring guest on Chile’s competitive talent show, Rojo. But after thyroid cancer put her career on ice in 2009, she came back swinging in the...

Mon Laferte, Guaynaa Lead Reggaeton Protest in New ‘Plata Ta Tá’ Video
Two months after Chile first erupted with nationwide protests against austerity, the Latin Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Mon Laferte shows support for the cause with her new song, “Plata Ta Tá.”

The title is a play on the sounds of a “cacerolázo,” or a Latin American style of protest in which people bang on pots and pans. Featuring boricua rapper Guaynaa, whose lyrics typically veer towards the raunchy, “Plata Ta Tá” champions taking the streets and facing down “pacos,” or police. In their vibrant new music video, like the Puerto Ricans famously did this summer,...
