Sffilm on Wednesday unveiled the program slate of the Sloan Science in Cinema Initiative at the 67th San Francisco International Film Festival, which runs April 24–28. Presented in a partnership between the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and Sffilm, this year’s program includes three films and participation by Sloan fellows and grant recipients at events throughout the festival.
Curated programs include three titles selected by Jessie Fairbanks, Sffilm’s Director of Programming. First is the world premiere of On the Invention of Species from director Tania Hermida, also being honored as the 2024 recipient of the Sffilm Sloan Science on Screen Award. This award carries a $5,000 cash prize and celebrates the compelling depiction of scientific themes or characters in a narrative feature film.

The annual SFFIlM Festival has officially unveiled its 2024 lineup, with two first-time feature filmmakers bookending the fest.
Sean Wang’s semi-autobiographical feature “Dìdi (弟弟)” opens the festival April 24 after premiering at Sundance 2024. Wang was also recently Oscar-nominated for his short film “Nai Nai & Wài Pó” which had been supported by Sffilm grants.

Barbie director Greta Gerwig, filmmakers Roger Ross Williams and Cord Jefferson and Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage are set to receive honors at the Sffilm Awards Night on Dec. 4 in San Francisco, organizers said on Wednesday.

Nicolas Cage is getting his long-awaited recognition for being a beacon of cinema over the course of his almost half-century-long career.

Sffilm announced the full lineup for the 65th annual San Francisco International Film Festival, the longest running film festival in the Americas. This year the Festival will make its return to theaters in person, featuring more than 130 films from 56 countries, including 16 World and 10 North American premieres, along with many Sffilm-supported titles. Of the films selected for the Festival, 56 are helmed by female or non-binary filmmakers and 52 are directed by Bipoc filmmakers.
