As Alex Horne tells it, Taskmaster was born out of professional jealousy. In 2009, he became a parent and so broke with almost a decade of tradition by not taking a show to the Edinburgh Fringe. That same year, his friend and former flatmate Tim Key won the festival’s top comedy award, for which Horne had been nominated in 2003.
At home and envious, Horne sent out emails inviting 20 comedians – including Key – to take part in a new competition in which he would set them a different task each month for a year. The results would be shared in a live performance at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe called The Taskmaster.
The result was organised chaos. An overdraft of comedians (a Fringe-specific collective noun) plus a pianist joined Horne on stage to reveal the results, set tie-break tasks, and eventually crown a winner.

Focus Features has acquired worldwide rights to Carey Mulligan comedy “The Ballad of Wallis Island,” Variety can confirm exclusively.
They will release the film in the U.S. while Universal Pictures International is handling global distribution.
The film, which was previously titled “One For The Money,” is directed by James Griffiths (“Cuban Fury”) and produced by Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow productions (“Philomena”).
The screenplay was written by Tom Basden (“After Life”) and Tim Key (“Great Expectations”), who also star in the film alongside Sian Clifford (“Fleabag”) and Akemnji Ndifornyen (“Famalam”).
“The Ballad of Wallis Island” tells the story of Charles (played by Key), an eccentric lottery winner who tries to reunite his favorite musical duo Mortimer-McGwyer (Mulligan and Basden) despite the fact they split up many years ago. Making things even more awkward, the musicians – Nell Mortimer and Herb McGwyer — were also once romantically involved with each other a la Sonny and Cher.

For the last five years, January has meant one thing to the cast of Ghosts: trundling over to West Horsley Place in Surrey to film the next series. Not in 2024. The BBC comedy’s final episode is set to air this Christmas, and after that, what do this in-demand lot have planned?
Plenty, it turns out. They’ll be popping up on screen and stage, as well as writing new projects both individually and together. As Larry Rickard told Den of Geek, “It’s not like we’re [famously fractious 70s soft rock band] The Eagles and we hate each other!” A Ghosts reunion down the line “wouldn’t be a mountain to climb,” says Rickard. “It’s a door that’s shut but obviously, doors have hinges and handles.”
And ghosts can just walk through them, we venture? “Well exactly, they haven’t even got to go to the effort of opening them.”

Warning: contains spoilers for Ghosts series 5 episodes 1 & 2.
Until now, you might have called Mat Baynton’s Ghosts character a lot of things, but Scottish wasn’t among them. Then in series five episode two “Home”, Thomas casually dropped the intel to a pregnant Alison that he was “as Scottish as the bonny heather” and would stand by her and “the wee bairn”, never mind that Mike is – obviously -the wee bairn’s father.
Alison was as nonplussed as the rest of us and unsure as what to make of the revelation. Later in the episode, Thomas embraced his Scottish roots once again by joining Pat’s side in the North v South debate, telling Julian: “Haud yer wheesht, I’m as Scottish as shortbread in a tartan tin, sir!”
So what was going on? Had all those centuries of unrequited love simply dicked Thomas in the nob, or was he...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for series five of Ghosts
Somehow, the final series of Ghosts has neatly tied up all the show’s loose ends while still leaving us wanting more – which is a jolly good thing considering they’ve confirmed we’re getting one more Christmas special in December 2023.
They really packed a lot into those last six episodes, revealing the heartbreaking truth behind the deaths of Kitty and the Captain, showing Alison and Mike’s next step in life, and giving the whole gang the opportunity to say all the lovely, touching things fans wanted to hear (as well as adding a poignant reference to Mary in the opening credits).
Taking the characters on these final journeys involved lots of flashbacks and new faces, so let’s recap all the most important guest stars from series five:
Anna Crilly as Joy Kielty

It’s 22Bc and we’re somewhere in Germany, on the northern border of the Roman empire near Frisia. Soldiers are going about their business, cleaning shields and helmets, chatting and laughing, and further along the sandy dune, under the high sun, combat training is taking place.
Enter Marcus Gallo, Grumio, and Jason Brindisi – accidental soldiers about to fight a Roman war. And for what? Because they thought joining the army in peacetime would bring them fame, food, wealth and perhaps most importantly – for Jason at least – women.
But, as with all things these boys try, it doesn’t quite work out that way. Peace is short, and now – as they are about to find out from the formidable commander – they’re on the frontline of the “Roman f***ing army” as the so-called barbarians invade.
Except it’s not Frisia, but Wales and the year is 2022. The sun was real though,...

Frankel plays Dixon while Bellamacina is Sally. "You see... there was this bee." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a fun comedy series titled Man vs Bee, the return of kooky British comedian Rowan Atkinson making us laugh even more. "A comedy series that will get the whole family buzzing." Atkinson last made the Johnny English Strikes Again movie in 2018, and has been doing a few other Mr Bean comedies recently, including the "Handy Bean" series. In this one, he doesn't play Mr. Bean specifically, but it still looks fun as he gets into more trouble. A man finds himself at war with a bee while housesitting a luxurious mansion. Who will win, and what irreparable damage will be done in the process? In addition to Atkinson, the cast includes Jing Lusi, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Greg McHugh, India Fowler, Claudie Blakley, & Tom Basden. This actually looks much better than Johnny English or Mr Bean, and everyone can...

Be happy, be kind, be Tony.
Ricky Gervais is coming to the end of After Life, the Netflix comedy series that he created and stars in and which has been watched by 100 million people around the world.
The final season marks a departure for the British comedian, who has never made a third season of any of his scripted series before – The Office, which spawned the NBC adaptation, Extras and Derek all ran for two seasons and a special.
Gervais is aware of this fact, telling Deadline in a wide-ranging interview that he really should have done a fourth season but that he didn’t want to risk the quality of the show dropping.
After Life, which returns January 14, follows Gervais’ Tony, a writer for the local Tambury newspaper, who is dealing with life after his wife, played by Kerry Godliman, dies. The third season picks up with the complicated...

After spending the time following his wife's death thinking that not caring was a superpower, the trailer teases him making good decisions.

One of those places is a bar, and well, that goes about as well as you can expect when he's caught.

Starring series creator Ricky Gervais and set in the small, fictitious town of Tambury, Netflix’s After Life has followed Tony, a writer for a local paper, ever since his life was upended by his wife’s death from cancer. While struggling with that immense grief, Tony started to realize that making other people feel good is what can give him hope — and a reason to live.

The 2020 Emmy ballots have been released by the Television Academy, so we now know which shows, actors, etc. are in contention for this year’s golden statues. Netflix’s comedy series “After Life” accounts for 10 entries on the performer ballot, including creator/writer/director/producer Ricky Gervais, supporting player Ashley Jensen and lead actress Kerry Godliman. Gervais, a two-time Emmy winner for producing “The Office” and starring on “Extras,” plays Tony, a journalist who essentially becomes a grief addict after his wife dies of breast cancer.
“It’s the most overtly grown-up and vulnerable I’ve been as a performer,” Gervais told Gold Derby after the critically acclaimed second season began streaming on Netflix. He added about his character, “He’s sort of addicted to grief, because hope has let him down too much. There’s a staple in comedy, particularly sitcoms, and that is an ordinary person trying to...

Netflix's cynical-but-sentimental dramedy After Life is getting a second season, so hopefully you're prepared for a whole lot more Ricky Gervais on your TV screens.
"I have never had a reaction like this before," Gervais said in a statement about the news. "It's been insane. And heartwarming. But now I have to make sure the second season is even better so I'll probably have to work much harder than usual. Annoying really."
The six-part series debuted on the streaming platform in early March, following Tony (Gervais), a nice man whose perfect life is shattered when his wife, Lisa (Kerry Godliman), dies. Struggling with grief, Tony decides that instead of doing something drastic like taking his own life, he's going to radically change the way he goes about his days in his British village. Essentially, he decides to be a remorseless d*ck. Fortunately for Tony, his friends and family...

Netflix knows a hit when it has one.
The streamer has handed out a second season order to Ricky Gervais' After Life.
The series focuses on Tony Johnson (Gervais), a recent widower who struggles with his very existence following the death of his wife.
He decides that sticking around would be the best course of action after contemplating suicide. The reason for that is to say exactly what he's thinking and be as rude to whoever he wants for the rest of his life.
Also, he has to look after the dog he shared with his late wife.

The first season launched on Netflix on March 8, spanning six half-hour episodes. The second season will again have six episodes.
After Life received mixed to positive reviews from critics, with the freshman run currently standing at a 68% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ricky Gervais’ dark comedy After Life is coming back to Netflix for a second season.
The Svod platform has ordered another six-part run of the show, which was created, written and directed by The Office creator, who also starred in the lead role.
This comes after the British comedy, which is produced by Gervais’ Derek Productions, launched on Netflix in March. Last month, the Derek star revealed that he’d never had a reaction to a show that he created before and said that he had a “spring in his step as he skips towards writing season two”.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “After Life,” streaming on Netflix.
In “After Life,” Ricky Gervais plays a middle-aged man who dispenses withering one-liners and verbal abuse at pretty much anyone who crosses his path.
On the surface, the role may not seem like a stretch for the infamously mean comedian. However, the takeaway from the darkly comic Netflix show, which is entirely written and directed by Gervais, may surprise a few people.
“My character is like a superhero in a way: he discovers he has this power, which we’ve all got, to say what you want. It goes well, it’s exciting, but then with great power comes great responsibility, and he’s got to learn who deserves it and who doesn’t,” Gervais says. “He goes too far, absolute power corrupts absolutely, and he realizes he’s turning into a maniac.”

Exclusive: The Ink Factory has successfully mined the library of John le Carré with "The Night Manager" and "The Little Drummer Girl" and it seems that the company is now looking do the same with acclaimed British author Roald Dahl.
I hear that Simon and Stephen Cornwell’s firm is rebooting Roald Dahl’s "Tales of the Unexpected" for TV and has set up a number of writers to work on the project. The company is working closely with the Roald Dahl Estate on the project.
The series, which was originally produced by Anglia Television for British commercial broadcaster ITV between 1979 and 1988, told a different story each week with Dahl’s trademark sinister and comedic undertones with a twist at the end.

Nine Lives, a novelette from the late sci-fi great, Ursula K. Le Guin, is being developed as a movie.
The legacy of the influential sci-fi author, Ursula K. Le Guin, appears to be highly coveted in the immediate aftermath of her death this past January, with live-action adaptation projects continuing to join the queue. Nine Lives is expected to commence production in the summer of 2019 with U.K. producers Gavin Humphries (Pin Cushion) of Quark Films and former Sony Pictures International producer Josephine Rose, reports Deadline. Tom Basden will co-write the script with Siri Rodnes, an actress and burgeoning filmmaker,...
