Hundreds of Cbeebies Bedtime Stories will soon be added to BBC iPlayer, and details of what’s happening are here.
The art of telling a story has been utilised for the television screen ever since the medium began. Jackanory is probably the best example, whether it was the much missed Bernard Cribbins spinning a yarn or the great Rik Mayall reading Road Dahl’s George’s Marvellous Medicine with a feverish fervour, it is perhaps the most primal form of drama there is, and is integral to children’s development.
Bedtime Stories is a kind of modern take on Jackanory for pre-schoolers, often managing to tempt huge stars of stage, screen, music and everything inbetween to Cbeebies to read a story. The BBC is making hundreds of episodes from the past available on iPlayer too.
Some of the readers you will be able to watch include (deep breath):

Today, multi-platinum selling singer, songwriter and producer, Moby, shares In My Heart remixes from acclaimed British DJ’s Carl Cox and Paul Woolford.
In My Heart is one of 15 iconic Moby tracks written or recorded in New York between 1994 – 2010 orchestrally reworked for his recent 20th studio album Resound NYC, released through Deutsche Grammophon.
Broken Hands. Paul Woolford
On working with Carl Cox and Paul Woolford, Moby said, “‘one of my favorite things is to send multitracks of a song to legendary remixers like Paul and Carl, and then happily listen to the magic they’ve created’.”
Paul Woolford said, “I’ve been playing Moby’s records since the start in 1991 so when he asked me to rework In My Heart with Gregory Porter I immediately said yes. Furthermore, I wanted to contribute a Special Request version of the song that almost floats as a beatless ambient version, so there’s...

Lee Mack poked fun at Prince Edward during his opening monologue at the Royal Variety Performance.
The stand-up comic hosted the annual celebration at the Royal Albert Hall, which was broadcast on Tuesday (20 December) and attended by the Earl and Countess of Wessex.
In his opening speech, Mack welcomed the audience to the show, before addressing Edward, who is the youngest of Queen Elizabeth II’s children.
“I’ve got three kids,” he told the audience. “The youngest is the naughtiest. It’s always the youngest that’s the trickiest, isn’t it?
“No disrespect,” he added, while the camera cut to a laughing Edward and wife Sophie Windsor.
“There goes the knighthood,” Mack added. “Wouldn’t work for me, anyway. Sir Lee – just sounds like I’m in a bad mood.”
The 2022 Royal Variety Performance is the first to be held since the death of the Queen in September.

This review of “Jazz Fest: A New Orleans Story” was first published March 13, 2022, after premiering at the SXSW Film Festival.
Anybody who’s been to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival could tell you that the hardest part of making a movie about the annual event, which takes up two weekends in late April and early May in the Crescent City, would have to be fitting it all in.
Jazz Fest, after all, showcases 7,000 musicians on 14 stages over eight days in a city whose homegrown music is a gumbo made up of every style and sound that came up through the Gulf of Mexico, down the Mississippi River or through the delta to the east and the swamps to the west of the city. The festival is gloriously overwhelming, an embarrassment of riches that forces you to pick and choose and be open to surprises any time the wind changes...

It’s been nearly nine years since the Robert Glasper Experiment released Black Radio II, the second, Grammy-winning installment of his mélange of contemporary jazz, beat-heavy hip-hop, and neo-soul melodies. Since then, Glasper disbanded the Experiment, embarked on soundtrack work such as the 2020 film The Photograph and the Bel-Air TV series with Terrace Martin, and engaged himself in damaging social media controversies. There has been a resurgence in popular support for jazz, too, and that’s partly thanks to Glasper (he contributed to Kendrick Lamar’s 2015 masterwork To Pimp a...

The R&b field at the Grammys is often one of the most competitive. This year we have everything from surprise newcomers to established veterans all in the running for gold. So let’s dive in to figure out who will win and who could potentially upset.
SEELuke James on his Grammy nomination for ‘To Feel Love/d’ and why this album felt like his ’emancipation’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Best R&b Performance
This is probably an easy win for Beyoncé with “Black Parade.” The song is nominated for three other awards, including Record and Song of the Year, and it’s the only nominee in this category to get into Best R&b Song. However, watch out for an upset, since past artists like Rihanna and H.E.R. have lost here despite nominations in the general field.

It's 2020, so it seems appropriate that when the Grammy nominations for 2021 were announced on Nov. 24, they were a hot mess. Some of the nominees were well-deserved, like Chika and Megan Thee Stallion's nods for best new artist and BTS making history with their nomination for best pop duo/group performance for "Dynamite," but the snubs were glaringly obvious.
I may have been distracted by the crumbling of our democracy for a bit, but I know for damn sure that men weren't the only artists coming out with R&b albums in the last year. So, why are they the only ones nominated for the category? While the nominees for best R&b performance, traditional performance, song, and progressive album have both men and women, the best R&b album category is solely made up of men. No disrespect to Ant Clemons, Giveon, Luke James,...

Season 16 of Fox’s”So You Think You Can Dance” has come to a close with 19-year-old b-boy Bailey “Bailrok” Munoz taking the title of America’s favorite dancer. The key to success for the first-ever break-dancer to win the top spot was his versatility when it came to different types of choreography. The 5-foot-tall ball of energy was rarely daunted by routines outside of his comfort zone — save for maybe the cha cha. But this gifted entertainer always gave it his all.
In fact, Bailey was featured in nine routines of various permutations, including five duos – three with partner Mariah Russell, one with All-Star Koine Iwasaki and another with Gino Cosculluella. He was also took part in a male trio with Gino and ballroom dancer Ezra Sosa. And he participated in three group numbers with the rest of the Top 10 contestants. Barbra Streisand has plenty of Grammys on her shelf — eight to be exact — but there is one award that has eluded her for decades: Best Traditional Pop Album. She has now been nominated for that award 12 times, but she hasn’t won it yet. That’s because Tony Bennett refuses to loosen his stranglehold on the category. Bennett has won almost half of all awards handed out in this category. Will he add to that haul this year?
Bennett has won Best Traditional Pop Album a whopping 13 times out of his 15 nominations over the 27-year history of the category, so he’s close to undefeated. And six of those victories were in head-to-head match-ups against Streisand. Bennett even won last year when he wasn’t technically nominated: the Grammys awarded “Tony Bennett Celebrates 90,” a compilation album celebrating his 90th birthday. He performed on the album, but the prize went to the producer,...

Kendrick Lamar led the nominations for the 61st Grammy Awards, with eight nods recognizing his work for the “Black Panther” soundtrack, including the hit song “All the Stars” with Sza. Drake is right on his tails with seven nominations, and producer Boi-1da and Americana singer Brandi Carlile are just behind them with six apiece.
Cardi B, Lady Gaga, Childish Gambino, Maren Morris, R&B newcomer H.E.R., and producer Sounwave all notched five noms.

Disclosure’s sophomore effort Caracal was one of the most anticipated albums of 2015, coming out two years after their critically acclaimed debut Settle, which featured the sleeper hit “Latch” with pop vocalist Sam Smith.
The UK duo’s latest release featured a collaboration on nearly every track, seeing Disclosure work with some major industry talent, including a new song with Sam Smith, “Holding On” with Gregory Porter, and “Magnets” with pop star Lorde. Serving as one of the biggest talents on the album, the Lorde collaboration was released as the fourth and final single to promote Caracal.
To celebrate the success of the track, Disclosure dropped a new VIP remix for “Magnets” this week, delivering a fresh update on the song. The duo draws on their Garage influences for the new version, stretching the track’s duration out to six minutes and switching out the chord progressions from the original...

Ed Sheeran and Bill Withers joined Stephen Colbert on The Late Show to promote an upcoming Carnegie Hall tribute and charity concert in Withers' honor that will benefit the Stuttering Association for the Young — something both musicians suffered from as children.
Sheeran did most of the talking, admitting he still stutters occasionally and noting the impediment arose after doctors forgot to apply an anesthetic while removing a birthmark around his eye. On top of that, Sheeran said he used to wear massive National Health Service-issued eyeglasses and has no eardrum in one ear.

To promote their forthcoming album Caracal, Disclosure has approved the creation of a (very) chameleonic sci-fi project: The beginning (shown in this Ryan Hope–helmed video here for "Holding On," featuring Gregory Porter) looks like Orphan Black met Insidious at a club and then had a baby. As the song progresses, that feel morphs into something kind of X-Men-y and then something else maybe a little RoboCop-y. "We wanted to create something very different with our music videos this time around, something unique that would connect all the songs from the album and the videos in a special way," the duo wrote on Twitter. They went on to explain that this clip is actually the first in a series of four vignettes (the others will be available here). When considered together, the quartet of clips will form a short film with the same name as the group's new record. Think...

Next Friday, Netflix will premiere Liz Garbus's stirring Nina Simone documentary, What Happened, Miss Simone? With it comes a soundtrack of Simone covers recorded by her daughter, Lisa Simone, as well as Mary J. Blige, Common, Gregory Porter, Jazmine Sullivan, and more. But the biggest and most unexpected presence on that album is Lauryn Hill, who, despite only planning to contribute two covers, ended up recording six. Given her own elusive history, it feels appropriate. "Because I fed on this music … I believed I always had a right to have a voice," Hill explained of her connection to Simone. "Her example is clearly a form of sustenance to a generation needing to find theirs. What a gift." At a premiere of the film earlier this month, Hill performed a few of those covers, and now Rolling Stone has premiered what'll likely be the most-talked-about of all her covers: Simone...

This wouldn’t be the first time Lorde has teamed up with Disclosure, in 2014 she appeared with the Lawrence brothers to perform a mashup of “Royals” and “White Noise” at the Brit awards.
As of now, it’s anyone’s guess as to whether this collaboration will appear on Disclosure’s Caracal or Lorde’s upcoming follow up to Pure Heroine. However, last weekend at Wild Life Festival, Disclosure announced a heavy roster of collaborations on their forthcoming album, and it’s quite likely Lorde would fit right in amongst Gregory Porter, Lion Babe, Kwab, and Nao.

Celebrity-worshipping Cannes got a sobering reminder of fame's dark side Saturday with Amy, a powerful documentary about the late singer Amy Winehouse.
"I don't think I'm going to be at all famous," a teenage Winehouse says at one point in the film by British directorAsif Kapadia. "I don't think I could handle it."
Winehouse was a global celebrity when she died in July 2011 of accidental alcohol poisoning at age 27.
The sense that the singer foresaw her fate lends extra poignancy to the film, which is getting its world premiere at a Cannes Film Festival midnight screening.
Musician Yasmin Bey, formerly known as Mos Def, performed at a party before the premiere, along with jazz singer Gregory Porter and new artist Cosmina.
Bey called Winehouse a "dear friend" and "one of the realest" people he had ever met.

I have already discussed seven new releases and one compilation in my article on the Jazz Artist of the Year, Matthew Shipp. Here are my other favorite new albums from the jazz world in 2013. Most surprising for me is the number of vocal albums, because I'm very particular about jazz singers and dislike most of them. So coming from me, the praise for the jazz singers listed here is really saying something.
1. Andy Bey: The World According to Andy Bey (High Note)
Andy Bey is my favorite living jazz singer, and he's not recorded nearly as often as his talents deserve. Now 74 years old, he has only recorded 11 albums in the course of a 50-year career (one a concert album I've never actually seen). In comparison, Kurt Elling, 46 and active for 18 years, has already made 10. It had been six years since Bey's previous album, and he's been living HIV-positive since 1994, so I was worried.

My alienation from current pop is almost complete; the only 2013 Top 40 material I enjoyed enough to play repeatedly was Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, from an album released in 2012. So I am officially a cranky old fart. But there are more and more of us, and maybe fellow COFs will find this list useful. By the way, crossing that border of alienation made me think more than ever that saying my lists are of the "best" albums is nearly absurd, hence the new headline.
1. Wire: Change Becomes Us (Pink Flag)
This is my favorite Wire of this century thanks to more emphasis on Colin Newman's brooding. When allied to their chugging motorik beats, it's irresistible to me. There are still some uptempo burners that recall their beginnings in punk, and some more whimsical though still musically solid songs, but it's Newman's dark musings that made me play this repeatedly.
