MCU May Have Only Been Successful Because Of What Bruce Timm Accomplished With The Dcau 20 Years Ago
As it stands today, even after a decade and a half of the franchise’s existence. the MCU is still the biggest and most revolutionary cinematic franchise to have been created in the history of cinema, which might never change even in the future.
But looking at things in retrospect, some keen-eyed observers may have realized that the idea of the shared multiverse that the franchise boasts of wasn’t pioneered by Marvel Studios originally.

Many people may have recognized the fact that the idea of a shared universe filled with superheroes and villains has been shown in the Dcau even before Kevin Feige took the reigns of Marvel Studios.
This was made possible under the leadership of the legendary DC producer and animator Bruce Timm, who popularized the idea of a superhero world, although, slightly differently than what Feige did.

When it came to the Dceu, Zack Snyder had quite the idea for his characters. They weren’t going to be just some usual run of the mill superheroes who had a conviction for doing good. For Snyder, it was so much more. He understood very well that life is never fair. The conundrums that categorise the postmodern era can’t be reflected in a hunky-dory world.
Hence the epiphany to explore with characters who would dare to start on the dark side of the spectrum, showing everyone’s favorite superheroes in a light no one could have imagined. And he was made to answer for that, with a section of fans questioning his choices. But he wasn’t the first to do so.

Not everyone was pleased with Zack Snyder’s experiments
Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom brings down the curtains on the Dceu.

Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds as the titular character, was a critical disaster for DC. The film was panned by fans and critics alike, and even Reynolds refused to suit up to play Hal Jordan again.
Unfortunately, the film’s failure was not just limited to the box office. It had far-reaching effects, and one of the victims of the catastrophe was DC’s animated show. Green Lantern: The Animated Series could not evade the chopping block either, and its cancellation was tied to Reynold’s forgettable outing as the superhero.

Bruce Timm needs no introduction when it comes to the animation industry. The man, the myth, the legend was responsible for creating much of the childhoods of 90s/early 2000s kids whenever they were not at school. His DC creations such as Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, and Justice League have achieved legendary status over time, and once pushed Cartoon Network’s ratings and viewership to sky-high levels.
John Stewart/ Green Lantern was voiced by Phil Lamarr in Justice League
Apart from the amazing artwork and breathtaking action scenes, these animated adaptations enthralled young minds due to the variety of characters that graced the screen, especially in Justice League and its later installments. Comic book enthusiasts would know that initially, Hal Jordan was the Green Lantern who joined the ranks of the Justice League. But in the show, it was John Stewart who replaced him as the ring-wielding superhero.

Bruce Timm started working with DC Animations since 1992’s Batman: The Animated Series. Since then, he has worked on numerous projects that have come from the pages of DC Comics, and is still an important part of the Dcau. When he started working with DC, Marvel animation was but a blip in the pop culture world, and the MCU did not even exist.

When Gunn & Safran assumed roles as co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studio, they declared a complete revamp of the old Dceu and revealed numerous projects, including live-action films, TV series, and animations.
While some projects like ‘Superman’ set for a 2025 release and ‘Creature Commandos’ are in production, details on others remain scarce, with occasional rumors and leaks hinting at casting or plot points. Among the highly anticipated shows were ‘Booster Gold’ and ‘Lanterns,’ and we’re excited to share some updates on them.
Production Weekly reports that both ‘Booster Gold’ and ‘Lanterns’ are set to begin production in 2025.
Originally, ‘Lanterns’ was conceived as Geoff Johns’ Green Lantern Corps film within the Dceu, slated for a late 2019 release. However, plans shifted with the announcement in April 2020 that Johns would produce a Green Lantern Corps series for HBO Max, indicating a change in direction. When Gunn & Safran took over DC Studio as co-chairmen and co-CEOs, they announced a complete overhaul of the old Dceu and announced a large number of projects ranging from live-action movies to live-action TV shows and animated series. We know that several projects are currently in production such as ‘Superman’ bound to be released in 2025 and ‘Creature Commandos’ the first project to be released under the newly coined Dcu label.
About the rest of the projects, we know very little except for some occasional rumors and leaks related to casting or plot points. Two shows that fans were most excited about were ‘Booster Gold’ and ‘Lanterns,’ and we’re pleased to announce that we have some news.

Justice League Unlimited is often regarded as one of the best series ever created by the DC Animated Universe. Throughout its run, it kept fans’ interest at its peak, making them hooked on it and wanting more at the end of each episode. But even with such good reviews, fans had conflicting opinions over a few things, especially one that included the Green Lantern.
Justice League Unlimited.
One of these few features of the story that caught fans in a whirlwind of mixed emotions was Green Lantern ending up choosing Vixen at one point. However, while fans may be worried about it because of what they saw onscreen, a lot of thought process was involved behind its helming, and the writer’s opinion on the same only further proves this!

The pages of DC Comics have always told, re-told, and even re-imagined the stories of their superheroes like Batman and Superman countless times now. Naturally, they have also been adapted several times for the entertainment industry for both the silver and big screens.
Among them, Dcau’s animated series of Batman’s and Superman’s stories from producers Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett to this day is considered one of the best in superhero entertainment history.
A still from Batman: The Animated Series
And since Batman: The Animated Series was such a beloved show during its entire four-season run time, the successor of the series, which was the iconic Superman: The Animated Series, had to prove just as good, if not better.

Geoff Johns initially penned a script for a Green Lantern Corps movie in the Dceu, aiming for a release by the end of 2019. However, plans changed when it was revealed in April 2020 that Johns would produce a Green Lantern Corps series for HBO Max, indicating a shift in direction. Efforts have been made to distinguish the series from the CW’s Arrowverse, possibly to attract those uninterested in its lower-budget productions.
Scheduled for a 2021 release, Seth Grahame-Smith took over as showrunner in October 2020, with Geoff Johns’ role decreasing. Denzel Washington is one of the most prolific actors who changed the way African American characters were portrayed in mainstream cinema. The actor has starred in landmark films such as Training Day, Glory, Philadelphia, Malcolm X, and Cry Freedom. He has also been nominated for the Oscars multiple times and has won the award twice.
Washington was reportedly always interested in playing Black Panther in a film adaptation. While the actor became too old to play the iconic superhero by the time the character made his cinematic debut with Chadwick Boseman’s portrayal, Washington reportedly had his eyes on another superhero. Noting that his first two appearances were “very controversial” sparking “a lot of discourse,” the revenant “Daily Show” anchor John Stewart figured he’d go with something easy (“an amuse-bouche”) for his third weekly shift: solving the eternal conflict between nations in the Middle East.

After more than eight years since signing off as host of The Late Show, David Letterman was welcomed back to the Ed Sullivan Theater with a grand standing ovation Monday.
“Ladies and gentlemen, my guest tonight certainly needs no introduction,” his successor Stephen Colbert announced just before the audience began to chant “David.” Letterman beamed as the crowd grew louder, and quipped “Is there going to be trouble?”
Elsewhere in the interview, Colbert commented on Letterman’s remark that the late-night chair is a “strange job that a lot of people don’t understand.

This Blue Beetle article contains spoilers.
At the start of Blue Beetle’s second act, protagonist Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) asks an important question: “Who the hell was Blue Beetle?”
A lot of viewers wondered the same thing when the Warner Bros. movie came to theaters earlier this year and they’ll likely be asking it again now that the movie is streaming on Max. People don’t ask that same question of Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman, but not because Blue Beetle is at best a C-lister in the DC Comics bullpen. Rather it’s because the man behind the Blue Beetle mask has changed several times since Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski debuted the character in 1939.
The big-screen adaptation introduces Blue Beetle as Jaime Reyes, who is a recent college grad forced to the superhero identity after receiving an alien scarab from Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), the daughter of inventor Ted Kord,...

The DC Universe is abuzz with tantalizing rumors, setting fan forums and social media alight with speculations and hopes for upcoming releases. With whispers of fresh character dynamics and the introduction of enigmatic heroes, the Dcu might be on the verge of a narrative renaissance. While the film industry grapples with strikes and inevitable delays, the subreddit r/DCEULeaks has become the epicenter for intriguing leaks, providing fans with much-needed speculation fuel. Though these are still unconfirmed rumors, the sheer possibility of such developments makes it an electrifying time to be a DC aficionado.
‘Lanterns‘: A fresh spin on age-old heroes
The long-awaited Green Lantern series is finally setting its course with Chris Mundy, the genius behind “Ozark” and “Criminal Minds,” taking the reins as showrunner. The revamped narrative is set to offer a twist, presenting an older Hal Jordan mentoring a younger John Stewart, deviating from the original vision of them being contemporaries.

"Curb Your Enthusiasm" might be centered around Larry David, who plays a fictional version of himself, but arguably the best part of the show is the rotating cast of eccentric characters that flow in and out of Larry's life. Everyone on the show plays some heightened version of their real-life selves, including Larry's "manager," Jeff Greene, portrayed by the irreverent Jeff Garlin. Unlike many of the other characters in Larry's charmed life, Garlin is a consistent staple throughout every season of the show and often acts as a sounding board for some of his crazier ideas. Believe it or not, the original idea for the show did not include Garlin, and adding him to the main cast was a last-minute decision just before the show started filming.
However, Garlin was attached to the series in a creative capacity from the very beginning. In fact, making a meta HBO series was...

The early 2020s have been a pretty rough period for DC Studios so far. The last seven Dceu movies have all been box-office disappointments, and since 2022’s ‘The Batman,’ which is separated from Dceu, DC Studios hasn’t released a commercially successful movie. This year’s ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ was this year’s first box office failure, with only $133.8 million grossed worldwide against a budget of $125 million. On top of that, we know that Dceu is facing a soft reboot. Therefore, Zachary Levi’s future as Shazam is under a big question mark.
Levi debuted as Shazam in the original ‘Shazam!’ movie, which was released in 2019 as a part of then-dc Films’ plan to focus more on standalone movies. The movie received positive reviews for its family story and sense of fun and grossed $367.7 million worldwide, which maybe doesn’t sound much, but it was enough to grant it a sequel,...

It’s been a week since ‘Blue Beetle,’ the newest DC movie, opened in theaters, and judging by the first weekend only, WB and DC Studios are listing this as their fourth DC flop in a row. 2022’s ‘The Batman’ remains the latest commercially successful DC movie, and it looks like it’s going to stay like that for a while now.
Despite the fact that ‘Blue Beetle’ is still very early in its theatrical run, grossing a little over $40 million worldwide for the opening weekend is already enough to call it a flop, particularly because ‘The Flash,’ another commercial disappointment for DC one and of the biggest box-office flops in history, grossed $139 million in its opening weekend.
At this point, the future of Xolo Maridueña as the Blue Beetle, despite the fact that he was born to play this role, is very uncertain, regardless of James Gunn’s promises about his future in Dcu,...

The Dceu's latest movie had a blink-and-you'll-miss-it connection to Green Lantern.
In Zack Snyder's Justice League, the Green Lantern Yalan Gur appeared during Darkseid's initial attempt to terraform Earth, but the character was killed by the Apokolips leader.
In the movie's original ending, Snyder planned to use Wayne T. Carr's John Stewart to warn Bruce Wayne about a new threat, but the final version used Martian Manhunter instead.

James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken the reins of the new DC Universe of movies and TV series, the new cinematic univese born from the ashes of the Dceu that began with 2013’s Man of Steel. According to Vanity Fair, Nathan Fillion (The Rookie), Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold), and Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class) have signed on to appear in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy.
Nathan Fillion is set to play Guy Gardner, a charismatic and slightly obnoxious member of the Green Lantern Corps, with Isabela Merced playing Hawkgirl and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. The leading roles of the movie were filled just two weeks ago, with David Corenswet (Pearl) set to play Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) stepping into the shoes of Lois Lane. With members of The Authority also said to be making their first appearance in Superman: Legacy, the film is shaping up to be rather packed with heroes.

“Superman: Legacy” writer-director and DC Studios co-chief James Gunn is expanding the new DC universe with three new actors joining the cast: Nathan Fillion (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”) will play Guy Gardner, one of the figures known as Green Lantern; Isabela Merced (“Dora and the Lost City of Gold”) will play Hawkgirl; and Edi Gathegi (“X-Men: First Class”) will play Mister Terrific.
Gunn cast David Corenswet (“Hollywood”) as the titular Man of Steel two weeks ago, alongside “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
At a press presentation of the new DC Studios slate in January, producer and DC co-chief Peter Safran said the film will focus “on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned.”

James Gunn has added three more names to cast of Superman: Legacy, including longtime collaborator Nathan Fillion as the Guy Gardner version of Green Lantern. Additionally, Isabela Merced has been cast as Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi will portray Mister Terrific.
Vanity Fair was the first to report the news of the trio’s castings.
Fillion, who appears in many of Gunn’s projects, already had a Dceu role as T.D.K. (The Detachable Kid) in The Suicide Squad. Considering how that character was left at the end of the film, there should be little concern over his new casting. As for the Green Lantern he’ll be portraying, Gardner is one a handful of Earth-based ring-slingers. Unlike the heroic Hal Jordan (played by Ryan Reynolds in the best-forgotten 2011 film) or fan-favorite John Stewart, Gardner’s abrasive personality makes his membership in the Lantern Corps contention. John Krasinski is following up on his acclaimed horror directing with a partly animated family film that aims to emulate the child-like wonder of past Steven Spielberg movies. Krasinski is currently working on If, which stands for “Imaginary Friends.” If has already compiled a list of impressive actors lending their voices to the fantasy comedy. Notably, for fans of The Office, the animated movie will be reuniting Krasinski with his former Dunder-Mifflin boss, Steve Carell. The movie has already assembled Krasinski’s spouse, Emily Blunt, as well as Matt Damon, John Stewart, Maya Rudolph, Sam Rockwell, Sebastian Maniscalco, Christopher Meloni, Richard Jenkins, Awkwafina and Vince Vaughn.

There isn't a superhero who's captured the hearts and aspirations of comic book readers more fervently than Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's Spider-Man. Ever since the character's introduction 61 years ago in the fifteenth issue of Marvel Comics' "Amazing Fantasy," the web-slinger has hooked 'em young with the universal origin story of Peter Parker, a nerdy teenager transformed by a radioactive arachnid (and the preventable murder of his Uncle Ben) into a quip-happy, crime-fighting dynamo. Every kid can relate to Parker's journey, and, as we grow older, our inner-child's fondness for the wall-crawler only deepens.
Though Spider-Man belongs to all of us, the character's massive popularity left open the possibility of an iteration that directly appealed to non-white fans. Finally, in 2011 (40 years after DC introduced the Black character John Stewart as a new member of the Green Lantern Corps), Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli thrust Miles Morales, a...

Since Warner Bros. Discovery already dropped the first trailer right in time for “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” it’s no surprise that “Blue Beetle” didn’t get much more new footage beyond a longer version of the existing trailer.
Of course, that trailer makes the case pretty well, and the next trailer will get played before most screenings of “The Flash,” “Barbie” and “The Meg 2” alongside rival kid-flicks like “The Haunted Mansion” and “Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem” prior to its August 18 theatrical debut.
We got an extended version of the trailer Tuesday at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, with Xolo Maridueña’s Jamie Reyes stumbling upon a mystical scarab that turns him into the title hero. It was the same trailer save for an extra final gag involving a senior citizen and a gattling gun.

Comedian Pete Davidson (Bodies Bodies Bodies) debuted the trailer for his new series “Bupkis” today, and we were surprised to see a familiar face in the show’s first look.
Yes, that’s Art the Clown from Damien Leone’s Terrifier movies, and actor David Howard Thornton reprised the role for his surprise appearance in “Bupkis”!
How did this come together? Why is this happening? And what role could Art the Clown possibly be playing in a Pete Davidson TV series? All we know is, it’s Damien Leone approved.

Showing off your late-night hosting skills when you have just four days to do so can be daunting. So Kal Penn brought his ‘A’ game.
The actor used his unique connections to the White House — he was an associate director of the White House Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs during the Obama administration — to deliver a hard-to-get booking to Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” When Penn recently guest-hosted the program, his first night featured a sit-down with President Joe Biden.
How did he land Potus? Penn simply asked — but made clear he planned to ask questions the Commander-in-Chief doesn’t usually get during a media scrum. “I definitely wanted him to join me in setting up what I hope was a hopeful arc over the week,” says Penn, who asked Biden to discuss how young people’s advocacy can spur change on climate, drilling, and human rights.

A Game of Thrones-style drama set on Wonder Woman’s home island of Themyscira (Amazonian palace intrigue). And an animated series already in production (Creature Commandos … wait, what?).
That’s just part of what will be coming to theaters and TV screens as part of DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new slate.
The pair have been busy in the three months since taking over and combining the film and television slate of DC properties, including live-action and animation as well as gaming. They revamped the way the movie and TV sides do business, cutting ties with projects and creators. A writers room was formed to find an overall story that will launch a unified DC Universe. Creators have been approached.

It’s a miracle akin to the ring itself: 2011’s Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, has shot up to the top of Netflix’s Top 10 U.S. Movies list just two days after dropping on the streaming service. It’s at #3 as of this writing, with way more viewers likely to stream it over the weekend. While this may come as a surprise to those who first watched the film in theaters in 2011, interest in a Green Lantern movie has never been stronger.
Despite his much maligned debut on the big screen, Green Lantern remains one of the characters DC movie fans keep asking to see in the Dceu the most. While Reynolds’ turn as the cosmic protector made waves for all the wrong reasons when it released, the latest Dceu movie to flirt with a Green Lantern cameo was the talk of Twitter for what it...

Zack Snyder’s Justice League made its once-unlikely arrival on HBO Max this past March, showcasing what was hyped as the director’s definitive vision of the 2017 DC Extended Universe megamovie, which he was initially unable to complete. While, for fans of Snyder, it lived up to said hype, the conversation about unrealized concepts shifted to Justice League member Green Lantern, who studio Warner Bros. insisted be cut from the reworked film. However, Snyder has been stoking interest in his unused Green Lantern concept ever since, notably with a recent reveal of concept art that sets the emerald ring-wielder’s role into context.
While the idea of the Green Lantern Corps was very much present in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, specifically its prologue, which was set around 5,000 years in the past, that usage was intended to set the stage for a present-day member to show up and join our heroes: John Stewart.

Although Zack Snyder's Justice League included just about everything that Snyder had originally shot for the superhero epic, there were a few elements that the director was forced to cut out. Snyder had shot a scene with Wayne T. Carr playing John Stewart/Green Lantern, but when Warner Bros. caught wind of it, they asked him to remove it as they didn't…...
