Donald Trump’s lawyers are once again demanding the recusal of the judge in his historic New York criminal trial, after the judge moved to block the former president from continuing to attack his daughter.
As Rolling Stone reported Monday, one source who has recently spoken to Trump about the upcoming criminal trial says that Trump’s attacks on the judge’s daughter have been about showing “he’s not afraid of these people, simple as that.”

Some of Donald Trump’s personal lawyers have been urging him to show a dose of restraint in the courtroom when his hush-money trial finally begins in New York City. But ahead of the historic criminal trial, scheduled to start in two weeks, the former president has relentlessly attacked the judge and his daughter.
Judge Juan Merchan, who is overseeing Trump’s criminal trial, last week imposed a gag order barring Trump from making any public comments about the court’s staff and their family members. Trump quickly tested out...

For a third time this week, Donald Trump went on an unhinged social media attack targeting the daughter of the judge in his upcoming hush money trial — this time calling her out by name.
“Judge Juan Merchan is totally compromised, and should be removed from this Trump Non-Case immediately” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account Thursday, adding that his daughter “is a Rabid Trump Hater, who has admitted to having conversations with her father about me, and yet he gagged me.” Rolling Stone has withheld her name as she...

Rep. Adam Schiff succeeded on two fronts Tuesday night, winning the California Senate primary and ensuring that the Republican opponent his campaign propped up with millions of dollars defeated progressive Democrat Katie Porter. But if Schiff (D-Calif.) thought his election night would be smooth sailing, he got a surprise when he took to the stage at Hollywood’s Avalon Theater.
As Schiff attempted to deliver his planned victory speech, protesters calling for a cease-fire in Gaza — where more than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israel’s ongoing offensive against the territory — interrupted him.

(Updated with more results & Super Tuesday details) The Congressman from Hollywood is one big step closer to becoming the Golden State’s junior Senator, but saw up-close this Super Tuesday some of the visceral challenges Democrats face from their own base.
In the double header that is California’s primary this Super Tuesday, Adam Schiff secured the top spot with just under 40% of the vote in. NBC News and the Associated Press called it for Schiff just over 30 minutes after the polls closed in the nation’s most populous state.
Not that the night was all balloon drops and victory dances for the veteran Congressman.
Dozens of protesters chanting “ceasefire now” over the worsening situation in Gaza made it near impossible for Schiff to get though his speech to supporters at Avalon on LA’s Vine Street.
Adam Schiff’s entire victory speech tonite was interrupted by protesters chanting for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Donald Trump cruised through Super Tuesday, as expected — but the night’s single biggest race may have been the U.S. Senate primary in California. It’s the first time in decades the seat in question has been seriously contested; Dianne Feinstein held it from 1992 until she died last September. She announced a few months earlier that she wouldn’t be seeking reelection, and the race to replace her has been raging ever since.

Updated, with latest results: Donald Trump and Joe Biden dominated a majority of Super Tuesday contests this evening, making it all the more certain that the November election will be a rematch.
Biden and Trump were projected to be the winners, by a wide margin, of party primaries in California, Colorado, Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Maine, Arkansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Alabama, Utah and Tennessee. Biden also was projected to win Vermont, and Trump won a caucus in Alaska.
The lingering question was whether Nikki Haley would continue her bid for the Republican nomination as Trump’s last remaining rival. She was projected to win Vermont, denying Trump a sweep of all Super Tuesday contests. Referring to Trump’s speech earlier in the evening, her campaign said in a statement, “Unity is not achieved by simply claiming, ‘we’re united.'”
Otherwise, the former president scored lopsided margins of victory.

The suspense this Super Tuesday may be in watching how all of the networks try to make the night suspenseful.
Some 16 states and one territory will vote: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia. A Democratic caucus also is being held in American Samoa, and Iowa Democrats also will reveal their results.
But with Joe Biden and Donald Trump on their way to a rematch in the 2024 presidential election, coverage Tuesday will focus on margins of victory, when each candidate will clinch their nomination and what’s next from now until Election Day. There also will be attention to down-ballot races, including California’s Senate primary to fill the seat long held by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-ca).

Katie Porter — the California representative famous for skewering corporate CEOs in congressional hearings — is sick of the “glacial” pace of the U.S. Senate and is brimming with plans to shake up the “stale” institution. If she can get elected.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-ca) and Rep. Katie Porter (D-ca) are making their final TV ads buys before Tuesday’s Senate primary, but one candidate has shot to the top of the polls without spending a dime on such spots.
In fact, according to one poll released today, former Dodgers star and Republican Steve Garvey is leading, albeit slightly, with just days to go.
Garvey may have Schiff to thank for pumping up his prospects. According to research firm AdImpact, 60% of Schiff’s broadcast ads mention Garvey. None mention Porter.
That’s widely viewed as by design on Schiff’s part.
California has an open primary, and the top two finishers on Tuesday will advance to the general election, regardless of party. Schiff has had an enduring lead in most other polls, and by highlighting Garvey and his conservative positions, he may be helping consolidate the vote on the right. There were few surprises at the third and likely final pre-primary meet up of the four leading candidates for California’s open U.S. Senate seat, a race increasingly defined by a race for No. 2 behind front-runner Rep. Adam Schiff (D-ca).
The NBC4/Knbc and Telemundo 52/Kvea event at Universal Studios was perhaps the most muted of all three debates, with few fireworks and the candidates often reverting to their talking points.
Rep. Katie Porter (D-ca) focused her attacks on Schiff, her colleague in the House, including a tiff over the value of earmarks.
“For too many decades, Washington does sweetheart deals for certain defense contractors through earmarks,” Porter said. “And there is a candidate on this stage who has done that, again and again, getting earmarks for his private corporate donors who are big defense contractors.”
Schiff responded, “We have a strong disagreement over whether senators should bring back resources for their state.

The four leading candidates for California’s open U.S. Senate seat met again this evening, this time in a one-hour San Francisco debate that produced fewer clashes than their first gathering in January.
Still, with less than a month before the state’s open primary, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-ca) focused a number of his attacks on Steve Garvey, the sole Republican on the stage, particularly over the “issue” of Donald Trump.
“Let me just say this also to Mr. Garvey: The greatest threat that we have to our democracy is Donald Trump,” Schiff said.
Garvey voted for Trump in the last two presidential elections but said that, when it comes to supporting him this year, he “will make that decision when the time comes.” In response to Schiff, Garvey said that the “gravest threat to democracy is deconstruction of the Constitution. Packing the court. Doing away with the filibuster.

Adam Schiff’s Senate campaign is unveiling a two-minute digital video, “California,” narrated by one of the congressman’s Hollywood supporters: Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
The video references Schiff’s roots in Danville, CA, with Gordon-Levitt saying, “Our state is built on a mutual commitment to each other, a commitment to equity.”
It also references some of the key issues in the race, including abortion and climate change, as well as Schiff’s prominent role in taking on Donald Trump.
“He prosecuted polluters. He fought to bring back millions to California to curb homelessness. That is a commitment to a better tomorrow that only sees itself true if we fight for our values today, if we rise to the challenge, take on the big fights. And win.”
Gordon-Levitt is among the entertainment figures who have sent out fundraising emails for Schiff, a group that also includes Jon Hamm and Mark Hamill.

A few examples: Nikki Haley’s campaign has contracts for time during the kickoff on CBS stations in Charleston and Columbia, as she seeks a better-than-expected showing in the South Carolina primary later this month, according to records filed with the FCC. In California, Adam Schiff and Katie Porter have spots to run in Los Angeles during network’s day-long coverage.

What? We can't believe Sam Waterson's leaving Law & Order.
There have been many cast changes, but Jack McCoy has been a fixture since the 1990s.
But sometimes, a character has gone as far as he can. McCoy may be ready to retire, which offers an opportunity to breathe new life into the oldest member of the Law & Order franchise.
McCoy is an old-school district attorney -- the kind of man the younger characters look to as a mentor. This is how Law & Order district attorneys tend to be; when he was young, he reported to Adam Schiff, who had many years of experience.
But times have changed, and Law & Order is overdue for a shakeup. Many viewers who love Law & Order: Svu and Law & Order: Organized Crime are having a hard time connecting with this reboot, so something needs to change.

Exclusive: Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will travel to Los Angeles on Saturday, with plans for the president to meet with Black leaders in the entertainment industry in town for the Grammys, according to a source familiar with the plans.
During the campaign visit, the president plans to talk with the industry leaders about the issues at stake in the election and how they can use their platforms to mobilize voters between now and the November election, according to the source.
The Bidens are planning to travel to Las Vegas on Sunday for the re-election campaign, so they will not be attending the Grammy ceremony. But during the telecast, the campaign plans to air a recently introduced ad spotlighting abortion rights, with the spot running in markets in battleground states, the source said.
There has been some buzz during the past few days that the Bidens would be visiting L.

It's not easy to be a district attorney, especially in a big city like Manhattan, where competing pressures exist.
Jack McCoy should be perfectly poised to handle it. He was an Ada for years, is passionate about justice, and knows the ins and outs of the legal system.
But on Law & Order Season 23 Episode 3, McCoy again made a questionable decision based on what would most likely win the case. It was less egregious than entering a potentially fake video into evidence, but it still felt like McCoy had lost his way.
Cops should never be put on pedestals, and questioning their integrity and fitness for the job is fair game. And since Riley got tipsy on the job and punched his supervisor, he would have faced public questioning about it sooner or later.
But McCoy's decision about this was purely political. He weighed the possibility that the cops wouldn't...

Adam Schiff’s Senate campaign announced a multimillion dollar, statewide ad buy for a spot that is most notable for who it singles out: Steve Garvey, the former Dodger great who is running as the highest profile Republican in a Democratic-dominated state.
In the spot, the narrator says, “Steve Garvey, the leading Republican, is too conservative for California — he voted for Trump, twice, and supported Republicans for years, including far right conservatives.
“Adam Schiff, the leading Democrat, defended democracy against Trump and the insurrectionists.”
Isn’t it to be expected that Schiff, one of the most prominent Trump foes in Congress, would want to highlight Garvey’s backing of the former Celebrity Apprentice host in the past two elections?
Perhaps, but these are the dynamics of an open primary, where the top two finishers in the March vote will go on to the general election, regardless of party.

Bill Maher Chimes in on ‘Barbie’ Oscars Controversy on ‘Real Time’: “Is This Really the Patriarchy?”
Bill Maher kicked off Real Time‘s second episode of the new year by taking the opportunity to share his thoughts on the Barbie Oscars nominations controversy.
Following the audience’s applause as he took to the stage, the host said, “You can always sense the excitement at this time of year when you’re in L.A. because it’s Oscars week or something. … This is a big part of the town, industry and everything. So we get very excited.”
Maher proceeded to note that 2024 Oscar nominations were released on Tuesday and Barbie scored eight noms, including best picture, but Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig lost out on best leading actress and best director, respectively.
“The matter has been handed over to the International Criminal Court and is being investigated for a war,” the host quipped about the matter.

“I don’t think you can judge that from Barbie not getting nominated,” said Rep. Adam Schiff (D-ca) tonight to Bill Maher when asked by the host if the snub of the blockbuster’s director Greta Gerwig and star Margot Robbie in the Oscars nominations means America is a patriarchy or not.
When Maher tried to link the Barbie discussion to Hillary Clinton’s failed 2016 campaign, Schiff put things in real perspective on Real Time. “I would vote for a corned beef sandwich over Donald Trump,” he quipped to applause don’t say that lightly, but at least a corned beef sandwich would have some intelligence and wouldn’t be a dictator on Day one.”

The three Democrats running for California’s open Senate seat sought to define their differences at their first debate tonight, but the the real flashpoint was with the sole Republican on the stage, Steve Garvey, and where he stood on Donald Trump.
After he said that he would support the former president if he returned to office, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-ca), Rep. Katie Porter (D-ca) and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-ca) tried to get him to say whether he would vote for him again.

Barbie director Greta Gerwig emerged from the elevator at the Château Marmont with producer David Heyman and her agent Jeremy Barber in tow.
Pleasantries and hugs were exchanged between them and May December filmmaker Todd Haynes and his longtime collaborators, the producers Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler. We were all waiting to go up to the hotel’s penthouse suite, with its sumptuous wraparound terrace, for W Magazine’s annual soiree to celebrate publication of its Best Performances edition, hosted by W’s editor in chief Sara Moonves and Lynn Hirschberg, who has a pretty much unerring eye for discovering talent.

“So, if Greta’s leaving, who’s left upstairs?” Haynes wondered aloud as he entered the lift.
Amanda Grandinetti, the Château’s managing director who’d squeezed in with us, assured us that the joint was popping upstairs.

Sen. Laphonza Butler (D-ca), appointed earlier this month to fill the vacancy following the death of Dianne Feinstein, said that she will not run for the seat in the 2024 election.
Butler told The New York Times that she realized that “this is not the greatest use of my voice.” She later confirmed her decision in a statement in which she said that “knowing you can win a campaign doesn’t always mean you should run a campaign.”
“I know this will be a surprise to many because traditionally we don’t see those who have power let it go,” she said. “It may not be the decision people expected but it’s the right one for me.”

When actress Yvette Nicole Brown first heard that California Gov. “She was instantly a rock star,” says the EMILYs List board member. “She was the first woman of color — Black woman — to lead EMILYs List. She was the first mother we ever had. That brought a whole other energy to what we were doing as an organization.

Steve Garvey, the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres all star in the 1970s and 80s, announced a bid for the U.S. Senate seat that was held by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-ca), who died last month.

His launch video also is heavy in images from his baseball stardom, as he tells viewers, “Over 50 years ago I came to California for the first time.”
“I never played for Democrats or Republicans or independents,” he said. “I played for all of you.”
Garvey will compete in an open primary next March, when the top two finishers will go on to the November general election. State voter registration leans heavily Democratic, making up nearly 47%, according to Public Policy Institute of California. Given that dominance,...

On Friday, former President Donald Trump mocked House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and her husband in the wake of a brutal attack in the family’s home last October.
Nancy’s husband Paul Pelosi’s skull was fractured in the attack where an assailant had beat him with a hammer.
Trump had previously responded publicly to the attack with trademark far-right conspiracies and called the attack a “sad situation.”
At a state party convention of California Republicans, Trump said, “We’ll stand up to crazy Nancy Pelosi, who ruined San Francisco — how’s her husband doing, anybody know? And she’s against building a wall at our border, even though she has a wall around her house — which obviously didn’t do a very good job.”
Republicans cheered Trump as he rattled off attacks on several of California state’s most prominent progressive Democrats.

Donald Trump’s civil fraud trial started Monday in New York, with the former president trying to fill the void left by a prohibition on cameras in the proceedings.
Before heading into the court this morning, he spoke to the media outside the courtroom, attacking New York state Attorney General Letitia James and bashing the judge, Arthur Engoron. After a lunchtime break, Trump gave another angry statement just after he exited. And he did so again while heading back in. “I want to watch this witch hunt myself,” he said.
Fox News carried portions of his remarks live, while CNN and MSNBC used them sparingly, often with correspondents talking over visuals of Trump speaking to reporters. CNN did do a fact check, while MSNBC ran a box in the bottom right-hand screen of the courtroom door.

Butler, 44, who is president of Emily’s List, is expected to be sworn in this week. She will be the first Black lesbian to openly serve in the U.S. Senate.
Her appointment is through the end of next year, and she is not among the candidates, as of yet, in the race to succeed her. A bill that would make striking workers in California eligible to receive unemployment benefits was approved on Wednesday by a 4-1 vote of the state Senate’s Labor, Public Employment and Retirement Committee. Senate Bill 799, which has already been passed by the state Assembly, now goes to a vote of the full Senate. If approved there, it will be up to Governor Gavin Newsom to either sign it into law or veto it. Last year, he vetoed 169 bills while signing nearly 1,000.
The WGA has been on strike since May 2, and SAG-AFTRA since July 14, but the bill would extend unemployment benefit coverage to all striking workers in the state, not just writers and actors. Rep. Adam Schiff told MSNBC anchor Jen Psaki that the $40 million super spending at work in Donald Trump’s 2024 Presidential campaign is part of the former President’s strategy to “keep out of jail.”
While speaking on Sunday’s installment of “Inside With Jen Psaki,” the MSNBC host asked the California representative what he made of the “eye-popping” figure dropped in a recent article from The Washington Post, which reported that $40 million from PACs supporting Trump’s campaign has been spent on legal costs this year alone.
“It is eye-popping but it also shows, I think, by one powerful metric how much Donald Trump’s running for presidency is part of his strategy to keep out of jail,” Schiff told Psaki.
“This is all about the hope that he becomes the next office holder and he can make all these legal problems go away as the next president,” he continued.

You’ve seen the countless headlines, the ubiquitous photos and footage of familiar and less-familiar faces of actors standing shoulder-to-shoulder in solidarity with their union siblings from all the unions representing the rest of the working industry on the picket lines. This is the first time in more than 60 years that SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America have gone on strike at the same time.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-vt) seized on the SAG-AFTRA strike in an online conversation with President Fran Drescher on Tuesday evening, as they both bashed Bob Iger and other CEOs, and made the case for why the actors’ walkout should be of concern of all workers.
Appearing on a screen with the message “end corporate greed,” Sanders and Drescher characterized the entertainment industry as part of an all trend in the economy to marginalize workers amid technological change, while top corporate executives become wealthier.
Sanders’ event opened with a clip from Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger’s interview with CNBC last week from Sun Valley, where he told the network’s David Faber that the contract demands of actors and writers were not realistic.
Asked by Sanders about Iger’s comments, Drescher said, “You know, I don’t even want to make it about him. He stuck his foot...

Exclusive: SAG-AFTRA is on strike, but not all members of the union won’t be working.
Since the 160,000 strong SAG -AFTRA officially declared on June 14 that it was joining the Writers Guild on the picket lines, the Fran Drescher-run group has been working on granting waivers to indie productions.
“We put the application process up on the first day of the strike,” said SAG-AFTRA chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland today outside Netflix. “And we’ve already got hundreds of applications … we will be responding to all of them,” he added, noting the project can’t have “any AMPTP fingerprints on them” if they hope to be granted an interim agreement aka waiver.
In fact, with projects like The Chosen already claiming to have been given the greenlight, a preliminary list of approved productions is expected to be made public by SAG-AFTRA later today or tomorrow, I hear.

It’s Day 4 of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Day 77 of the WGA strike.
“Discover the past, live the present and fight the future,” was an apt message from The X-Files‘ 1998 spinoff movie and it’s one that could be applied to the current actors and writers strike.
It seems timely, then, that some of those responsible for writing and starring in the long-running sci-fi hit, were outside Fox as part of an X-Files reunion.
Star David Duchovny told Deadline that there are so many issues to try and get through, particularly AI. “I think the powers that be have a lot on their plate right now with trying to figure out, kicking the can down the road with the AI stuff. What is it capable of? They’re philosophical questions,” he said.
Duchovny also highlighted streaming residuals. “We always worked in a business that rewarded success and didn’t want failure.
