Curtis Jackson, aka 50 Cent, has filed a lawsuit against Ryan Kavanaugh’s GenTV looking to block the streaming platform’s inaugural film Skillhouse.
Jackson, in a lawsuit filed in California federal court on Thursday, accuses Kavanaugh of failing to pay him and illegally exploiting his name to promote the horror movie, the first in a series of influencer-driven films the company plans to release. He alleges trademark infringement, false advertising and unfair competition, seeking at least $5 million.
Kavanaugh was once one of the most prolific behind-the-scenes financiers of films (The Social Network, Step Brothers and Mama Mia!) through Relativity Media, which sputtered into bankruptcy in 2015. He’s seen his share of legal troubles, including settled fights with Sony Music and Timbaland, and is staging something of a comeback. He announced last year the launch of GenTV, a streaming platform with plans to produce influencer-led films. By his thinking, he...

Lines are being drawn in the sand today in a Collider-exclusive sneak peek of the upcoming installment of Power Book III: Raising Kanan. This week will mark the fourth season’s seventh episode, “Allow Me to Re-Introduce Myself,” which pushes the story further into what we can only presume will be a vicious, drama-filled, and brutal climax as Patina Miller’s Raquel Thomas continues her journey to become the biggest and most feared name in the drug dealing game. While MeKai Curtis, who plays the show’s titular lead, is absent from our exclusive sneak peek, audiences are invited to pull up a chair and sit in on a brainstorming session between Raquel, London Brown’s Marvin, and Tony Danza’s Stefano.
In a pinstriped button-up with his long white hair falling behind his shoulders, Stefano (Danza) gives his allies a breakdown of their competition. Things aren’t looking...

With crime sagas like “Power” and blockbuster films, Starz packs a surprising punch.
I recently wrote about how Starz absolutely crushes gritty crime dramas like “Power”, “Bmf,” and “Hightown,” (you can check that article here). But the truth is, there’s way more to Starz than just street-level thrills and crime sagas. The streamer’s also got a huge lineup of original hits, fan-favorite movies, and plenty of content you might not even realize is included – all at a very competitive price for a premium streamer. If you’re wondering what exactly Starz is, how to get it, and whether it’s worth signing up for, here’s everything you need to know.

With hits like ‘Power,’ ‘Bmf,’ and ‘Hightown,’ Starz has mastered the art of street-level crime dramas that keep fans hooked.
The first time I realized Starz was doing something different was when “Power” blew up. It wasn’t just another crime show - it was a full-blown phenomenon, the kind that had fans dissecting every episode and debating character choices like they were real people. Then came the spin-offs – “Power Book II: Ghost,” “Power Book III: Raising Kanan,” and “Power Book IV: Force” - each one expanding the world and proving Starz wasn’t just making crime dramas, it was building an empire. Add in “Bmf,” a gripping, real-life crime saga, and “Hightown,” a dark and twisty murder mystery set against Cape Cod’s heroin crisis, and it’s clear: if you want gritty, high-stakes crime dramas that pull you in and never let go, Starz is the best streaming service for it.

Raquel “Raq” Thomas is not molded after your typical TV queenpin. She isn’t an unassuming victim who suddenly finds herself rising to power in a bid to save herself from degradation, to lift her family out of financial ruin or to reluctantly take on the unscrupulous responsibilities of a dead husband. And she’s certainly no mere “gender-flipped” response to the lovable antihero archetype that dominated television in the early aughts.
No, Raq is just a born killer in sultry peekaboo sweaters and curve-hugging leather pants who can’t abide a power vacuum. She does not hesitate before pulling a trigger. Even more ominously, she’s a mother and sister who wields her love like a rope, using her devotion to control more than to nurture. Beware momma’s kiss: Her lips are laced with poison.
Played by Patina Miller in one of TV’s most magnetic (and beautifully costumed) under-the-radar lead performances,...

In this day and age of peak(ish) TV, it’s not unusual for a series to cap a season with a jaw-dropping cliffhanger. But the third season of the Starz hit Power Book III: Raising Kanan dropped one and then some.
“I don’t think anyone was ready for how it ended,” star Patina Miller told The Hollywood Reporter during a special event in partnership with Starz in Park City, Utah, during the Sundance Film Festival in January. “It literally ended on two bangs.”
Two bangs followed by two bodies hitting the floor to close out a wild and action-packed third season. The fourth is locked and loaded and ready to roll out on March 7, and ahead of its debut Miller joined showrunner, executive producer and Power guru Sascha Penn, title star Mekai Curtis and the one and only Tony Danza for a compliment-filled panel discussion at Pendry Park City.

With Lionsgate Studios and Starz set to complete their separation by mid-January, the CEO of the latter made the case for why investors should buy a new Nasdaq-listed Strz stock, calling it “a misunderstood asset.”
“You’ve got a very good, investable business,” he told a Ubs media conference, “one that has “actually made the transition from linear to digital faster than any other linear network and more successfully.”
Starz’ $1.4 billion in revenue is mostly digital. Its position with its core demos of women and African American viewers is quite strong. As a standalone, it will grow by acquiring similarly positioned networks that take advertising, which Starz doesn’t.
“If you look at the disruption going on in the business today, there are a lot of linear networks or ad-supported networks that serve the demos that we serve today that are part of larger companies, that aren’t getting the...

Power was created by Courtney A. Kemp in collaboration with 50 Cent, who is one of several rappers to appear in the acclaimed series. Power is a crime drama starring Omari Hardwick as James St. Patrick, who is trying to leave behind his previous life of crime and become a legitimate businessman. Like many of the characters in the Power universe, St Patrick is known by an alias and struggles with his relationships with friends and family. This complex web of allegiances forms the basis for Power and its spin-off series.
Power and its spin-off series all have large casts with some memorably powerful villains and antiheroes, many of whom are not portrayed by full-time actors. Though the show is about the worlds of crime, family, and the overlap between the two, rather than music, Power has become known for its cameos by famous rappers. This is not as surprising as it may sound,...

Courtney A. Kemp (in collaboration with Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson) created Power, which debuted on June 7, 2014, and quickly became one of Starz's most successful television shows. The 2014 crime drama series ran for six seasons before ending in 2020, and thanks to its popularity, Starz ordered multiple spin-offs tied to the original show. Four television series now exist in the Power universe (and not all of them are sequels to the first show), which means the order to watch the Powers series in order is a little bit confusing.
Power centers around James "Ghost" St. Patrick (played by Omari Hardwick), a drug dealer who wishes to leave the world of crime and pursue his dream of owning a nightclub. However, Ghost ends up having to balance both careers while navigating his struggles and the morality of his actions. Meanwhile, Power Book II: Ghost continues the first show's story by focusing on Ghost's son,...

The Power universe is known for its high-stakes drama, gritty action, and incredible performances, but one of its most underrated aspects is the franchise's incredible theme songs. Having co-created the series alongside Courtney A. Kemp, 50 Cent has been massively involved in Power, even playing one of its most iconic characters, Kanan Stark. Although he was one of the show's main antagonists, Kanan became popular among audiences, growing into one of Power's best characters and even getting his own spinoff. Still, 50 Cent's influence on the franchise didn't end there, as he was a major part of every theme song.
Across Power's 4 shows, there have been three opening songs, all of which are made by 50 Cent. Although Power Book: II Ghost shares the same theme song as the original series, Raising Kanan and Force each have their own unique opening sounds that wouldn't have been possible without the legendary musician.

The final chapter of Power Book II: Ghost was closed on October 4, 2024, with Tariq St. Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr.) gaining the upper hand on two of his most threatening enemies. Now that Monet Tejada (Mary J. Blige) is also out of the picture, Tariq has more freedom to begin life anew than ever, leading many fans of the hard-hitting Starz crime drama to wonder if he's been seen for the last time.
More importantly, with Power Book III: Raising Kanan and Power Book IV: Force still going strong, it's worth exploring how the events of the Ghost finale will inform the overarching Power universe moving forward. Raising Kanan Season 4 and Force Season 3 near their expected winter 2024 releases requires a clarifying recap to determine how the ambitious crime series will continue.

[This story contains spoilers from the Power Book II: Ghost series finale.]
On the very first episode of Power created by Courtney Kemp and executive produced by rapper-turned-tv mogul Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson back in June 2014, there was no way of knowing that the kid in the nice penthouse apartment asking his mother Tasha (Naturi Naughton) if his father James St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick), who spoke fluent Spanish, could “hook up” his Spanish homework as she served breakfast was on his way to becoming a drug kingpin. At that point, the young Tariq didn’t even know his father was himself a kingpin known on the streets as Ghost (Hardwick). And that his mother also knew. Michael Rainey Jr. was just a few months from turning 14. Now a decade later, just over a week after turning 24, he’s closed out another series.
When Power Book II: Ghost premiered Sept. 6, 2020, the pandemic had put the whole country and world on a life-turning timeout.

After six acclaimed seasons, Power came to an end in 2020 by resolving its season-long whodunit premise. Created by Courtney A. Kemp in collaboration with Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Power is a crime drama that centers on James St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick), the smart, smooth-talking drug dealer-turned-nightclub-owner who isn't afraid to be a little ruthless. Known by the alias "Ghost," James struggles to balance his business endeavors with the needs of his family. Ghost's wife, Tasha (Naturi Naughton), and their three kids namely Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.) don't always have the best relationships with James, as the finale proves.
Power's cast of characters is rounded out by Tommy Egan (Joseph Sikora), Ghost's best friend, and Angela Valdes (Lela Loren), James' enduring love interest. All of these principal characters and a few others, like 50 Cent's Kanan come into play in the 15-episode final season of Power. At the beginning of the sixth outing,...

The final season of Power Book II: Ghost will go down as the most watched show ever on Starz.
The drama, which is headed toward its series finale on Oct. 4, is averaging 10.5 million viewers across all platforms, measured for 90 days post-premiere. (Several years ago, Starz noted that season five of Ghost’s predecessor, Power, averaged 10.8 million viewers, but over a longer span of time than 90 days.)
The Power franchise, which encompasses four series, has set a number of ratings records for Starz. The flagship series displaced Spartacus as Starz’s most watched show at the time back in 2015 and continued to roll up big audiences over the course of its run. Ghost, Book III: Raising Kanan and Book IV: Force — which notched the biggest opening weekend for any series premiere in the channel’s history — have also pulled in strong viewing numbers over their runs.

Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson is laughing off claims that his massive Power franchise was ripped off from a former drug kingpin’s life story.
After New York District Judge Hon. Analisa Torres dismissed Cory ‘Ghost’ Holland’s lawsuit against the Grammy Award winner, Jackson shared the news on Instagram with a response referencing the Starz series’ main character James ‘Ghost’ St. Patrick.
“Fool thought he was Ghost,” wrote Jackson on Instagram. “Da fvck wrong wit these [ninja emoji]s man Lol”
His post comes after AllHipHop reported that Judge Torres found the Ghost character did not directly refer to Holland, as a defamation claim requires. Holland first filed the complaint against Jackson, show creator Courtney Kemp, Starz and Lionsgate in 2021, alleging that Kemp ripped off his 2007 autobiographical CD Blasphemy.
The judge also threw out a $300 million lawsuit against Lionsgate, as well as a complaint that Jackson showed up in his neighborhood with a...

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s 49th birthday was three days ago, but he’s still in a celebratory mood.
If there was any question as “Fiddy” nears 50 whether he’s still at the top of his game, the answer arrives with him at the photo shoot for this story: The rapper turned mogul brings $3.5 million in cold hard cash, most of it stuffed into two heavy black suitcases. Some is assembled into a square stool that he sits on while smoking a cigar. Every now and then, as he poses for photos, he digs into the stash and adds a few more stacks to the table beside him — as those on set watch in awe, including the four security guards Jackson arrived with. The doors are locked shut, and the window shades are closed for maximum privacy.
Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson was photographed July 9 at Pier 59 Studios in New York.

Exclusive: Starz’s Power Book III: Raising Kanan has cast Chris Redd (Bust Down) and Grammy Award-winning rapper Pardison Fontaine (Rap Sh!t) for Season 4.
Season 4 is in production in New York. The series scored an early renewal for a fifth season following the Season 3 finale in February.
Power Book III: Raising Kanan explores the early life of everyone’s favorite villain Kanan Stark, originally played by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson in the flagship series, and shows his evolution from näive teenager to a cutthroat villain. Season 3 saw an epic showdown between Kanan (Mekai Curtis) and his mother Raq (Patina Miller), resulting in a couple of surprise deaths and the return of a fan-favorite character. London Brown also stars.
Redd will play “Early Tyler,” who is described as “a trustworthy ally and secret-keeper.” Early Tyler is a neighborhood institution and a good friend to have in your corner – if you can...

The Power universe has expanded with several successful spinoffs, including Raising Kanan. Raising Kanan proves that prequels set in the Power universe work well by deepening existing characters and building out the world. The Ghost and Tommy prequel, Power Book V: Origins, could be even better than Raising Kanan because it centers on two of the franchise's most compelling characters.
Although the original Power aired its finale in 2020, I'm excited to return to the crime drama's world from yet another angle in an upcoming Ghost and Tommy prequel and another Power "Book" show reaffirms my optimistic outlook. Created and produced by Courtney A. Kemp, in collaboration with Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Power landed on Starz back in 2014 and, ultimately, ran for six successful seasons. While Power's cast of characters expanded as the series continued, the show mainly focused on James St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick), a ruthless dealer who goes by the alias Ghost.

Viewers are puzzled about why Power Book V: Influence was canceled by Starz despite the success of the Power franchise. The decision to cancel Power Book V may be due to the prominent role of Rashad Tate in Power Book II: Ghost, suggesting that his storyline could be satisfactorily concluded in that series. There are speculations about a potential London-set Power spinoff, but Starz has not officially announced any new entries to the Power universe.
Starz canceled Power Book 5: Influence, which led many to wonder what happened to the planned Rashad Tate spinoff. Created by Courtney A. Kemp, in collaboration with Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Power is a six-season crime drama that became one of cable's most-watched shows. Power positioned itself as a critical and commercial success. The show was so well-received that it spawned a media franchise. Within the Power universe, there are three spinoffs: Power Book II: Ghost,...
