1986 to 1990 traineeship at the Academy of Social Sciences in Moscow; 1990 doctorate (Dr. oec.); subsequently managing director of the publishing house Junge Welt; 2004 to 2005 managing director of the daily newspaper Neues Deutschland.
1991 to 1997 federal treasurer of the PDS, 1997 to 2002 and 2005 to 2007 federal managing director of the PDS, 2007 to 2010 federal managing director of DIE LINKE party. 1998 to 2002 and since 2005 member of the German Bundestag.
2010 to 2015 deputy chairman of the Left Party parliamentary group in the Bundestag. October 2015 to November 2019, with Sahra Wagenknecht, Chairman of the DIE LINKE parliamentary group in the German Bundestag. Since November 2019 Chairman of the parliamentary group DIE LINKE with Amira Mohamed Ali.
