Iga Swiatek has reduced Aryna Sabalenka 's lead at the top of the world rankings to three digits as the season inches to its climax.
The Polish superstar won the 2023 China Open this past week - her first Wta 1000 of the season in scintillating style, dropping just one set throughout the week. She ended Coco Gauff 's 16-match winning streak at the event before romping to the title in Sunday's final.
Swiatek, who now has 8,890 points is just 590 points behind Sabalenka in the latest rankings and the world No. 1 ranking will be decided at the season finale in Cancun. Both players won't play at any Wta tournament between now and the end of October.
The rest of the Top 10 remains unchanged, but results in Beijing sealed the last three spots at the Wta Finals . Marketa Vondrousova , Ons Jabeur , and Karolina Muchova will join the current Top 5 of Sabalenka, Swiatek, Coco Gauff,...

Ukrainian tennis star Marta Kostyuk gave her reasons why she stopped working with male coaches and highlighted the instant impact brought by new coach Sandra Zaniewska.
Kostyuk appointed Zaniewska, a 31-year-old Pole who had a short-lived career as a tennis pro, immediately after Wimbledon. Zaniewska has previously worked with French player Alize Cornet and Petra Martic - the latter enjoying her most fruitful tennis years under her tutelage between 2017 and 2019.
Kostyuk, who made her Wta debut at age 15, opened up on her coaching situation in an exclusive interview on WTAtennis.com . The 21-year-old opined that working with male coaches has been a massive challenge due to a communication drawback.
Kostyuk alludes that most male coaches don't talk hence why she has relied on counselling from her mother, who has been by her coach for most of her playing career. So far, her alliance with Zaniewska has shown genuine promise.

The stars of women's tennis will make a second pitstop on the African continent for the second edition of the Tunisia Open which will run from October 16th to 22nd in the coastal city of Monastir.
The Tunisia Open, while being a freshly minted event in the calendar, ensures that all players are rewarded generously for their efforts. The tournament has committed a financial pool in excess of $259,303, which is slightly over $7,500 from last year's prize money pouch.
This increase will be reflected across all rounds, meaning that players will make a few extra bucks just 12 months from last year's edition. The event will be played on outdoor hard courts, featuring 32 singles players . Inaugural champion Elise Mertens will return to defend her crown.

The Wta Tour makes its second stop on the African continent this season for the second edition of the Tunisia Open .
The Wta 250 event will run from October 16th through 22nd featuring a 32-player singles field. It will be contested on the outdoor hard courts at Skanes Family Hotel Monastir in Tunisia and the initial entry list is out.
Elise Mertens became the inaugural champion last year when she defeated Alize Cornet in the final. Tunisian fans braced themselves for a home coronation, but the top seed Ons Jabeur was stunned in the quarterfinals stage.
Jabeur won't return this year , presumably due to scheduling issues, as she is in the running for a spot in the Wta Finals , held just a week after the Tunisian Open. But there is a hale and hearty group of 32 players in the singles draw.

Simona Halep has yet to see her doping case get resolved as her former coach, Wim Fissette, fully believes her innocence.
Simona Halep has been out of tennis for a whole year due to testing positive for a banned substance, and it's yet to be resolved. There have been multiple pushbacks since then, leaving both Halep and many fans frustrated.
After the most recent one, Halep posted an update explaining how disappointing it is . She saw many tennis figures like her former coach, Darren Cahill , and veteran players like Alize Cornet and John Millman speak on her behalf.
In fairness, the situation is a bit ridiculous, considering how long it's taking. Some of that was to be expected due to bureaucracy, but this is a bit too much. Even so, many are sure that Halep will emerge triumphant from the situation, including her former coach, Wim Fissette, who considers her 100 % innocent.

Former Wta No. 11 Alize Cornet voiced her support for Simona Halep and called on the tennis world to rally behind the suspended star.
Halep was provisionally suspended a year ago for a failed drugs test after the 2022 US Open. She received a separate breach of anti-doping regulations for inconsistencies with her biological passport earlier this year, a decision Halep termed as harassment and that left her helpless.
The former Wta No. 1 has maintained her stance that she is innocent. Her long-awaited hearing was conducted in late June, and since then Halep has been on the waiting line as far as her verdict is concerned despite initial reports suggesting she'll get feedback within weeks.

Held from July 31st to August 6th, the 2023 Prague Open is probably the most prestigious Wta tournament held in the Czech Republic, but this year also the most controversial.
As a Wta 250 tournament in the capital of the Czech Republic, the event managed to put together quite a solid entry list , but that started falling apart when the projected top seed Barbora Krejcikova withdrew from the tournament .
The tournament suffered yet another blow when the country prevented Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing , something that also happened in Poland only a week ago ahead of the 2023 Poland Open in Warsaw .
So the draw for the tournament had to be made without the third-highest-ranked Czech player in the Wta Rankings , but also without Russian and Belarusian players that wanted to compete in the Czech capital.

Wta world number 70 Alize Cornet is the latest player to voice her support for Sweden's Mikael Ymer , who recently received an 18-month ban for an anti-doping violation.
Ymer's ban relates to three out-of-competition doping tests , which he missed in a 12-month period. He contested the charge and was cleared by an independent tribunal in June 2022. However, the International Tennis Federation (Itf) filed for an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The appeal by Itf was successful, and Cas imposed the ban on the Atp world number 51 a week ago. Ymer's position is clear: he has never used nor been accused of using banned substances, as he explained in a tweet shortly after receiving the upsetting news.
Casper Ruud was the first high-profile pro who publicly supported Ymer, adding that players have become prisoners in meeting their appointments with the doping officer. French Wta star Alize Cornet also weighed...

The 2023 Lausanne Open will run from July 24th to 30th, and the draw has been released for the Wta 250 tournament.

Once the teenager confirmed that she would compete at the event in Lausanne , it immediately became more interesting for tennis fans, and once the draw came out, all eyes were on Andreeva's first-round match.

Belinda Bencic won't be competing at the 2023 Hopman Cup after the Swiss player withdrew from the event.
From July 19th to 23rd, 2023, the Hopman Cup returned to the calendar, but this time, it won't be held in Australia but in France at the Nice Lawn Tennis Club. Once the event's return was announced , many fans were excited about it, but the excitement seemingly dropped off over time.
One of the reasons is the fact that the tournament is held immediately after Wimbledon, making it difficult for many players to attend the tournament. Injured Paula Badosa was one of the players who withdrew from the tournament , and while the initial entry list for the 2023 Hopman Cup looked star-studded, the star names are starting to disappear.
After the withdrawal of the third highest-ranked Wta player at the event, also the highest-ranked athlete withdrew as Belinda Bencic won't compete along Leandro Riedi, making Switzerland's team significantly weaker.

Elena Rybakina marches on at the 2023 Wimbledon as the Kazakhstani player cruised past giant-killer Alize Cornet in two sets.
After solidifying herself as one of the best players on the Wta Tour last year by winning Wimbledon, Rybakina aims to add to her Grand Slam legacy with another trophy. There was some doubt leading up to this event with some health issues but she played a really solid round one match to get her title defence underway and now produced another solid effort.
Proclaimed as the best grass player on the Tour by Andy Roddick, Rybakina certainly lived up to that name in the opening set. Facing a very capable grass player who was a combined 22-12 record on the surface in the previous few years, Rybakina proved really strong.
She took an early lead which is always the preferred way you want to start a match because it gives you confidence moving forward.

Wimbledon commentary may seem seamless but getting the names, nations and numbers correct 100% of the time can prove problematic at times.
Chris Evert proved during the first-round clash between Elena Rybakina and Shelby Rogers. Defending Wimbledon champion Rybakina was given a tough contest against Rogers on Centre Court and the Khazakstani player lost the first set 6-4.
However, the 25-year-old raced back into contention with a resounding 6-1 win in the second set before she wrapped up the victory with a 6-2 score in the final set .
It was certainly a game of ups and downs and co-commentator Evert had a tough time keeping up with the action at times. During her analysis during the match, Evert confused Rybakina's country of Kazakhstan with the name of fellow Wta player Daria Kasatkina .
"Rybakina is a Russian, played for Russia, moved to Kasatkina... Kazakhstan, excuse me."

Iga Swiatek is seemingly good to go for Wimbledon after pulling out of Bad Homburg a few days ago due to an issue.
Swiatek was playing her only Wimbledon prep event in Bad Homburg but s he pulled out of the event on the day of her semi-final at the Wta 250 tournament. It was an abrupt move leaving fans worried that she picked up an injury at the event. Luckily it was not an injury but an illness.
Swiatek had a fever the day before which ultimately forced her to abandon plans of playing, especially with Wimbledon a few days away. She spoke about what happened back in Germany ahead of her Wimbledon return.
I had a really bad night. We did with my conditioning coach measurements in the morning. They didn't really look good cuz I barely slept. I had a stomachache but I dunno if there was something wrong or not.

From June 25th to July 1st the grass-court preparations will peak at the 2023 Bad Homburg Open and the draw was released.

Iga Swiatek 's achievements over the last three years have impressed many onlookers, but Andy Roddick feels the Wta world number one does not always get the credit she deserves.
Swiatek lifted her fourth career Grand Slam and third Roland Garros title with a three-set final win against Karolina Muchova . In addition, the Polish player recently became the longest-serving world number one amongst active players as she held the top spot for 64 weeks.
Despite her long-term success at the age of 22, Roddick believes the end of the 'Big Three' era and Serena Williams' much-followed retirement have taken the shine off Swiatek's accolades. When speaking to MSNBC, Roddick sympathised with Swiatek as he believes her progress is being lost in the current context of tennis.

Maria Sakkari started her 2023 Nottingham Open with a first-round win over Xiyu Wang from China.
Switching from one surface to the other is never easy for tennis players, especially, if it's a switch from the slowest surface on the Wta Tour to the fastest. Yet, when things are not going well on the red dirt, it may be the grass where the player returns to the winning ways.
And that was surely the case for Sakkari. Entering the 2023 Nottingham Open, the Greek lost in her last two matches after she was beaten by Marketa Vondrousova in Rome and then lost to another Czech player, Karolina Muchova at the Roland Garros.
In the first round of the Wta 250 grass-court tournament in Nottingham, the top seed was drawn against Xiyu Wang from China, a player that she lost to in their only meeting that happened at the 2022 US Open.

Veteran player Alize Cornet called the timing of the Italian Open final between Anhelina Kalinina and Elena Rybakina 'sad'.
The French player was wondering whether it could have been pushed back to Sunday. The Wta edition of the Italian Open concluded last night with the final between Elena Rybakina and Anhelina Kalinina. Rybakina 'won' the match and many will be glad it's over because it hasn't been a memorable one, at least not how you want it to be.
The event was plagued by unprecedented rainfall, leaving the organizers wondering what to do with the scheduling. They ran into the same problem last night with the final beginning at 23:00 local time due to the multiple rain delays which pushed everything back. It was a short match followed by a really odd trophy ceremony where the crowd booed the organizers.

Rome, May 11 (Ians) There were mixed fortunes for former World No.1s in the second round of the Italian Open on Thursday as Victoria Azarenka defeated Sloane Stephens, but Karolina Pliskova fell to Anna Bondar, here.
No.14 seed Azarenka ended Sloane Stephens’ six-match winning streak 6-4, 6-3 while qualifier Bondar scored her first Top 20 win 7-6(5), 6-2 over No.13 seed Pliskova.
Despite the scoreline, Azarenka’s 1-hour, 42-minute victory was far from straightforward. The 2013 finalist trailed by a break twice in the first set and once in the second; there were 10 breaks of serve in total.
Both players had to adjust to each other’s shifting tactics, mixing up high balls, drop shots and all-out power as they sought to gain the upper hand.
Ultimately, it was Azarenka who was more aggressive overall. She struck 25 groundstroke winners compared to Stephens’ 13, with her ability to open up the court with her backhand proving crucial.

The Wta draw for the 2023 Madrid Open promises a lot of action in the Spanish capital from April 25th to May 7th, 2023.
Ons Jabeur lifted the trophy last year and she will want to defend it this year despite the recent injury scare. The Tunisian will start against either Anna Bondar or Ana Bogdan in the first round of the Wta 1000 event in Madrid.
But all the eyes will be on Iga Swiatek, who added another trophy to her collection in Stuttgart. The young Pole is the first-seeded at the 2023 Madrid Open and already in the second round, she can play against fellow Grand Slam champion, Emma Raducanu who will play against a qualifier.
Player that the world no. 1 beat in the final is the world no. 2, Aryna Sabalenka, who will also play at the tournament, and she will compete against either Lauren Davis or Sorana Cirstea in the second round.

In a surprising turn of events, Moscow-born Varvara Gracheva has set her sights on representing her new home country of France.
Currently ranked 54th in the world, Gracheva would like to represent France already at Roland Garros this year. Sources from L'Equipe have confirmed that the 22-year-old has officially applied for French citizenship, a decision believed to be unrelated to Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year, which resulted in a ban of Russian and Belarusian players from last year's Wimbledon.
Since moving to France in 2016, Gracheva has been honing her skills at a training facility in Cannes. Her application for naturalization was completed on March 5th and submitted to the Ministry of Interior, the government department responsible for citizenship decisions.
While the timeline for the final decision remains uncertain, Gracheva's burgeoning career in the tennis world has captured the attention of French sports enthusiasts as she may become the new French No.

Azarenka, the No. 26 seed and former world No. 1, won 6-2, 6-3 to open Thursday’s play on Court 17 as she got the lead and never let up.

New York, Aug 28 (Ians) Emma Raducanu played down injury concerns on the eve of the US Open after the defending champion suffered discomfort during practice on Friday.

The British number one overcame Leylah Fernandez in last year’s final, clinching a breakthrough success after reeling off 10 consecutive wins without dropping a single set.
But her hopes of defending the title appeared under threat when she twice stopped her session with Ekaterina Alexandrova on Friday, being consoled by coach Dmitry Tursunov after appearing upset by pain in her right hand.
Raducanu headed off court for treatment before returning to complete the session, and insists she is not worried by the episode.

New York, Aug 26 (Ians) In what is set to be her final tournament, 23-time major champion Serena Williams will face Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic in the first round of the U.S Open, the organisers announced on Thursday.
Earlier this month, Williams announced her impending retirement after the U.S Open. A champion in New York six times, she will face No.80 Kovinic for the first time.
The 27-year-old Montenegrin reached a career-high ranking of No.46 in 2016 and became the first woman from her country to win a Wta Tour title last year at Charleston.
In January, Kovinic broke new ground for Montenegro at the Australian Open after defeating Emma Raducanu to become the first woman from her country to reach the third round of a Slam.
The winner of that opener will face either No.2 Anett Kontaveit or Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian.

Cincinnati, Aug 16 (Ians) Amanda Anisimova passed her difficult opening-round test at the Western & Southern Open with flying colours, defeating world number 10 Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 6-4 on Monday.
Ekaterina Alexandrova mounted a pair of comebacks to defeat No.13 seed Leylah Fernandez, 6-4, 7-5 in the first round.
Alexandrova will face either Naomi Osaka or Zhang Shuai in the second round.
Playing her first tournament since Berlin, Alexandrova rallied from 3-0 down in the first set and 5-1 down in the second set to upend Fernandez and level their head-to-head 1-1. Fernandez served for the second set twice, but Alexandrova wiped out two set points to prolonge the set, ultimately winning the last six games of the match.
Russia’s Kasatkina, who has beaten two of the world’s top-seven players in the past couple of weeks, had her serve broken six times by America’s Anisimova, thanks in large part to five double faults.
