If you were to see the trailer or basically any promotional material for “The Serpent Queen,” Starz’s new series about the infamous life of one Catherine de Medici, you’d be forgiven for assuming it’s a showcase for Samantha Morton in a historical drama with modern touches, following in the footsteps of her recent turn in “Harlots.” Even its arresting opening credits sequence, which sees Morton stride to a throne to a heavy guitar lick as snakes slither out and toward her, suggests a show preoccupied with being Edgy and Different — a show that would consider itself to be not like Starz’s many other historical drama girls, as it were.
However: as adapted from Leonie Frieda’s biography by Justin Haythe, this perception proves to be only somewhat the case. In fact, the first few episodes of “The Serpent Queen” — which premieres Sunday, Sept. 11 — feature Morton sparingly,...

Alicia Vikander has joined the cast of the psychological Tudor horror ‘Firebrand’ as principal photography gets underway.
Vikander replaces the previously announced Michelle Williams in the role of Henry VIII’s final wife Queen Katherine Parr. Law will play the role of the tyrannical Tudor King Henry the VIII.
The story will focus on Parr and her singular point-of-view of the psychological horror of living with a monster—and the remarkable will to not only survive but thrive. It will follow the last months of Katherine Parr’s survival as Queen of England, consequently the last months of Henry VIII’s life as King.
Having witnessed Henry disposing of his wives through death and divorce, not only did Parr have a secret agenda but had no assurances of a happy marriage; in fact, she had no assurances of surviving the marriage at all.
Also in news – Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu...

The movie, shooting up in the Derbyshire region of the UK’s Peak District, is based on Elizabeth Fremantle’s bestselling historical novel Queen’s Gambit.
Film follows the marriage of Katherine (the filmmakers have chosen to spell Katherine with a K; some historians use a C) to Henry, his sixth and final wife, and how she fell foul of her husband’s courtiers — namely his key adviser Stephen Gardiner, the Bishop of Winchester, a role taken by Simon Russell Beale.

While Mr. Selfridge has supposedly been renewed, BBC1 has pulled the plug on The Paradise. There won't be a third season for the period drama.

For fans of the television series The Wire, it is impossible not to be on patrol, trying to spot detective Jimmy McNulty in Dominic West's Iago and Lester Freamon in Clarke Peters's Othello. But it is to the credit of both actors and to Daniel Evans's triumphant production at the Sheffield Crucible that such distractions do not persist as the tragedy gathers pace. Besides, Dominic West is in complete Shakespearean disguise as Iago. He has grown a beard, cut his hair savagely short, wears curious brown leather knickerbockers with slits in them and has acquired a Yorkshire accent to play the greatest villain of all time. The choice of accent is inspired because it sounds so trustworthy – it turns Iago into Mr Common Sense. Noisy comedy is this Iago's cover. An air of mystery surrounds any new Mike Leigh project. Like a dedicated scientist, he works behind closed doors researching with his chosen team: his latest experiment didn't even have a name until a few days ago.
And, while it doesn't disappoint in its exploration of the hermetic strangeness of English family life, it lacks the richness of texture of Leigh's finest work for stage and film.
Criticism inevitably spoils the surprise of a play in which information seeps out gradually. But it's fair to reveal that we are in London's south-west suburbs in the late 1950s and that the focus is on a family of three.
Dorothy, a war widow, is a painfully uptight figure who busies herself with household affairs and who even regards wearing a pinny in front of visitors as a breach of decorum. Her brother, Edwin, has worked for the same city insurance...
