When I read the story line for Lucky Bastard I couldn’t help but remember the scene in Boogie Nights in the limo with Roller Girl (Heather Graham) being served up to a “fan”, that didn’t end well and neither does Lucky Bastard. Things never go well when reality is mixed with fantasy…
Lucky Bastard is a website run by Mike (Don McManus) which invites fans to have sex with porn stars. Dave (Jay Paulson) is the latest fan to be selected, and the porn star Ashley Saint (Betsy Rue) is less than happy about doing a scene with an amateur. These bastards may not be so lucky.
“Lucky Bastard” pushes the boundaries of thriller cinema into the pornography business. With an Nc-17 rating, the movie looks into the scary side of the pornography business—a possible crazed maniac killer.
In a reality porn footage, a porn web site invites fans with porn stars. A young fan was given the opportunity to have sex with a famous porn star, but the cast and crew ended up with gruesome results.
The movie stars Don McManus (“The Shawshank Redemption”), Jay Paulson (“Mad Men”), Betsy Rue (“My Bloody Valentine”), Chris Wylde (“The Revenant”) and Catherine Annette (“Femme Fatales”). It is directed by Robert Nathan.
Latino-Review was provided an exclusive clip with a scene between Don McManus and Jay Paulson arguing after a failed sex scene.
The movie is currently in limited release in select cities.

We’ve all done it. A movie looks interesting, we start reading the synopsis only to realize it’s a found-footage flick, and we immediately turn and run the other direction. It’s a natural reaction as roughly 96% of all found-footage thrillers are for crap thanks to their consistently similar “plots” and utter apathy towards explaining the presence of the camera(s) in anything resembling a logical way. Which is why movies that dodge both of those bullets are deserving of a second glance. Lucky Bastard deserves that second glance. Mike (Don McManus) produces a web-based porn show called “Lucky Bastard” that picks one hopeful fan and films them having their way with a living, breathing porn star beauty. The latest winner is Dave (Jay Paulson), a shy but enthusiastic viewer whose anticipation at the prospect of having sex with Ashley Saint (Betsy Rue) leads to some premature bubbling over of excitement. That...

Found-footage thrillers share a lot of qualities with "amateur" porn — handheld cameras, unscripted reactions, and a better-than-average chance that you won't want to watch more than 10 minutes of it.
So how does Lucky Bastard, which combines the two genres, manage to be so good? A solid cast, led by Betsy Rue (as porn star Ashley Saint) and Don McManus (as producer Mike), is the key, performing a sharp, character-driven script by Lukas Kendall and director Robert Nathan.
Mike persuades Ashley to appear on his Lucky Bastard website, in which a "lucky" fan gets the chance to screw a porn star. The gag is, of course, that none of the Bastards are up to a porn-level performance, so they wind up humiliated on video.
That's definitely true of creepy Da...

“Found footage” horror and pornography – why hasn’t someone thought of this already? What a refreshing point of view considering this increasingly stale, lifeless genre – Ok, hold on, are we all watching the same horror movies? Mindless sex, fleshy nudity, and exploited women have been as prominent in horror as the killings themselves, so I’m a tad bit confused over all the “originality” praise surrounding Lucky Bastard. Sure, writer/director Robert Nathan marries sexual perversion and “found footage” tropes for a “new” type of horror, but man, we’ve all seen pornos, right? Do you really want that kind of acting on screen for an hour and a half? While they aren’t even gettin’ jiggy wit’ it? I’d love to make a punny remark about a script that blows its wad far too soon (I suppose I just did?), but without any resemblance of a satisfactory money shot,...

One of the keys to nailing a "found footage" movie is to give your audience a good reason as to why cameras are always running -- even when mass carnage is underway. It's not always believable that a woman would hang on to a video camera while she's being chased by a raving maniac, but it is sort of believable if your horror movie is about a low-rent porno production whose very gimmick is to film everything. And, yes, the "Lucky Bastard" porno site most definitely aims to film "everything." Surely that's enough of a hook to hang a movie on, right? Found footage, on a no-budget porno set, and the no-name nobody (aka the "lucky bastard") who gets to bed the sexy starlet is, of course, seriously unhinged and just about to explode in a tornado of impotent fury. So given that the head honcho wants everything filmed, and...

Title: Lucky Bastard Director: Robert Nathan Starring: Don McManus, Jay Paulson, Betsy Rue, Chris Wylde, Catherine Annette, Lanny Joon, Lee Kholafai A fairly clever little indie film that shrewdly marries the popular but well-worn “found footage” framing device to a prurient storyline, the Nc-17-rated “Lucky Bastard” may not win any awards, but it puts an imaginative spin on what is too often a sloppy low-budget aesthetic, easily outstripping charges of empty gimmickry. After an opening consisting of crime scene footage that tips viewers off to some dark events, the rest of the film is presented as the behind-the-scenes footage from a porn shoot for a website called “Lucky Bastard,” where [ Read More ]

On paper, Lucky Bastard sounds like it could be a fun meta stab at the found footage horror genre. When you say “found footage porn horror,” you’d think you would at least have a little bit of fun watching it. I went in with literally zero background on the movie and it starts up with a pre-credit stating that for the sake of the movie, Lucky Bastard is a porno website where one watcher, the titular “lucky bastard,” is chosen to sleep with a porn star. This time around, the chosen viewer isn’t exactly all there. That is it. That is the entire premise of this movie.

Lucky Bastard is going to get some theatrical play in Los Angeles on April 5th at Vintage Cinemas' Los Feliz 3 (1822 N. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90027). This was the found footage film set in the world of porn that we told you about here.
The film is the directorial debut for Robert Nathan (Law & Order), the Peabody-winning, Emmy-nominated veteran writer. The film stars Don McManus (The Shawshank Redemption) as the proprietor of a website that invites fans to have sex with porn stars. Jay Paulson (Mad Men) plays Dave, an eager young fan given a chance to have sex with the fabulous Ashley Saint, played by Betsy Rue (My Bloody Valentine). Everyone gets more than they bargained for from the seemingly mild-mannered Dave...to gruesome results.
The film is being released with an Nc-17 rating. Check out the trailer inside.

Sex and violence are potentially too volatile a mixture for the MPAA to handle, and as a result everyone's least favorite parental guiders have slapped the upcoming cinéma vérité effort Lucky Bastard with the dreaded Nc-17 rating. That's okay, though; it's still heading to theatres.

Vineyard Haven, LLC, has announced the April 5, 2013, Los Angeles theatrical release of Lucky Bastard, a “found footage” thriller taking place behind the scenes of a porn website. The film is rated Nc-17 by the Motion Picture Association of America for explicit sexual content.

There's a new found footage thriller making the rounds, and looking for a home, called Lucky Bastard. The film takes its inspiration from those pornos in which an average Joe is selected to sleep with a real porn star on camera. Here, the porno series is called Lucky Bastard and the average Joe turns out to be a bit..."off."
The film is directed by Robert Nathan, no stranger to television, and it stars Betsy Rue (My Bloody Valentine 3D), Don McManus, Jay Paulson (Don Draper's baby bro on Mad Men), Catharine Annette and Chris Wylde (The Revenant). You'll find the trailer inside.
Not surprisingly, the film was smacked with an Nc-17 rating. For more details, visit the official site. We'll keep you posted when this one land's distro.

Betsy Rue gets to keep her clothes on (mostly) for her stint on Femme Fatales. Best known to audiences for her audacious nude scene in the 2009 slasher flick My Bloody Valentine, Rue has also turned up in roles on TV hits like True Blood, NCIS, The Mentalist and (believe it or not) iCarly, where she played a talent-challenged pop star. She’ll play the title character in “Libra,” the Season 2 capper for the Cinemax anthology series — airing Friday at 11pm — starring as a costumed vigilante out to exact high-heeled justice upon the bad guys of Cuesta Verde. In Groupie, we have one of the more recent efforts from director Mark L. Lester. If his name rings a bell with film buffs out there, it’s because he is also responsible for such classics as Stephen King’s Firestarter and Commando. However, I would suggest not popping Groupie into your DVD player expecting another future classic along those lines. Although this film does contain Lester touches that reminded me of certain elements in those films, thus bringing back a pleasant bit of my childhood for me, this is nevertheless… not quite the same.
Groupie tells us the story of a rock band called The Dark Knights that may or may not be cursed thanks to a horrible tragedy that we as viewers are witnesses to at the very start of the film. You see, The Dark Knights are apparently just as well known for their...

From the director of Firestarter, Class of 1999, Showdown in Little Tokyo, and Commando comes Groupie, a psycho thriller about a psychopathic rock groupie terrorizing a popular rock band on their comeback tour.
Groupie marks the first time Mark L. Lester has stepped behind the camera since 2005's highly rated Syfy original Pterodactyl. Taryn Manning (Hustle & Flow) stars as a mysterious groupie that hooks up with a famous rock band named "The Dark Knights" looking to rise again on their comeback tour. As she insinuates herself more and more into their lives and career, the more death and mayhem follows.
Hal Ozsan ("90210") co-stars at the band's troubled lead singer, along with Betsy Rue (famously naked in My Bloody Valentine 3D) and the venerable Eric Roberts as the band's almost assuredly soon-to-be-dead manager. Michael Feifer (Dracula's Guest) and Randall Frakes (Hell Comes to Frogtown) are credited with the screenplay.

I remember reading the plethora of gripes and groans when it was announced that a remake of My Bloody Valentine was coming to theaters. "Can't they just leave classics alone!" and "I bet it will suck as much as the Prom Night remake" were spouted over and over again across the web. Well...surprise! This joins a very short list of recent horror remakes that is actually a worthy companion to its predecessor. Much like most remakes, My Bloody Valentine 3D is not a straight remake as much as it is a "reimagining." We get the same basic premise--a killer in a miner's outfit killing off people during the Valentine holiday--and even get the same characters, but a lot is switched up here. Still, the changes do...

Remake of the 1981 cult favorite finds the citizens of a small mining town falling prey to a deranged miner.
What is at the forefront of reasons as to why audiences go to see a horror film? It has to do with them wanting to be scared or spooked in the comfort of their own home or in a movie theater without having to deal with a scary situation in real life. Horror movies are in a way safe. That level of fear or the anticipation of being scared is an emotional high, an adrenaline rush. The original My Bloody Valentine understood this very basic concept in connection with how to go about creating a horror film and delivered upon being one of the horrifying horror film experiences of the 80's. In 2003, NYPD Blue broke barriers and was handed a hefty fine from the FCC for showing actress Charlotte Ross completely nude on network television. Director Patrick Lussier and writer Todd Farmer, who already showed Betsy Rue in three dimensions of nudity in My Bloody Valentine, have cast Charlotte Rosse of Glee fame to do the same according to Mr. Skin.
Ross told E! reporters at the Golden Globes about showing off her own golden globes in her next role:
“I do full frontal nudity and it’s [in] 3-D.”That was a very intense experience…I’m not 20 anymore and it’s 3-D—nudity 3-D! This is raw, hard-core—not hard-core, but I mean, there are no nipple covers!”...

Fresh off of the launch of last year's Road to the Altar, rumor has it that Jaleel White had officially caught the web series bug. In a surprise move today, episodes 1-3 of Jaleel's newest series, Fake it Till You Make, launched on Hulu. White's boutique production shingle, Sweet Irony Productions, and New York based P3 Entertainment collabed on production of the 10 episode series, all of which were penned and produced by White. White and his team were rumored to have been shopping the series around town, and early indicators of serious interest from online network Hulu, seem to have panned out. Sources from within White's camp have confirmed that the distribution deal with Hulu is a kind of 'rev share plus' with a minimum guarantee and payouts per view. Directed by web series vet Todd Pellegrino (Mayne Street), Fake It Til You Make It series stars White as entertainment mogul Reggie Culkin,...

In all the excitement over all the other year- and decade-end lists, we almost overlooked Mr. Skin's ever-popular ranking of the best nude scenes bestowed upon us in 2009.
Previous winners have included Salma Hayek in 2006 ("Ask the Dust"), Marisa Tomei in 2007 ("Before the Devil Knows You're Dead") and Mischa Barton ("Closing the Ring") and Lizzy Caplan ("True Blood") in 2008 for their film and television work, respectively.
This year, the list has been combined once again and shortened to a mere Top 10. At the top of list, Susan Sarandon's daughter Eva Amurri for her turn as a college student/stripper on Showtime's "Californication," beating out Jessica Biel's feature film turn in "Powder Blue."
Two other TV performances were noted, Anna Paquin for HBO's "True Blood" (her second time to appear on the list) as well as Alanna Ubach on HBO's "Hung."

It is, of course, end-of-the-year list time, and while we're anxiously waiting to see what critics groups crown the best films of the year, Mr. Skin has something else in mind. As he does every year, the industry leader in flesh, has ranked the best nude scenes of the year, combining both films and cable TV.
I think we all kind of expected Jessica Biel to win this year, with her ballyhooed first nude scene in Powder Blue. Had it been a surprise and had it not leaked to the internet and had the film actually made it to theaters, I think it probably would have won. She was upended, however, by Eva Amurri and her revealing stint on Californication. The other TV entrant is Anna Paquin from True Blood; last year, the show's Lizzy Caplan made the list, when Mr. Skin split it into TV and film categories.

Cybil Shepherd will make her recurring character debut on the second episode of Eastwick, entitled Reaping and Sowing. It also looks to me like Darryl Van Horne took Roxie's advice and is sporting a new haircut. Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in Drive Angry, a revenge movie directed by Patrick Lussier. Cage will star as a man chasing down the people who killed his wife and daughter, with the violence escalating with each death. I know it sounds ridiculous, and that's because it probably will be ridiculous. It sounds a bit like Mad Max, Death Race 2000, and Rolling Vengeance rolled into one. That's right, Rolling Vengeance, look it up. It's great 80's cheese. And intentionally cheesy is exactly how this is going to have to be for it to be bearable. Now, I would like to think since Patrick Lussier, director of this year's campfest My Bloody Valentine, is at the helm, it should be cheesy fun. Who knows, perhaps even another full monty performance by Betsy Rue is in store. However, since it will star Nicolas Cage, I imagine the movie trying to take itself too seriously, or...

Blood Worx Films' The Legend Of Zombie Road is now casting in Phoenix, Az over on Craigslist. Starring Masiela Lusha, Betsy Rue (My Bloody Valentine) and Kane Hodder (Jason Voorhees), here's the plot crunch: There are many Urban Legends surrounding Zombie Road and the area, ongoing for decades. The main legend is that the road is haunted by the ghost of a man, known only as Zombie, who in the 1960's escaped from a secret government testing facility for the criminally insane. Reports state that he would make his way nightly to a lovers lane look out bluff where he would stalk and kill party goers and return to the asylum before dawn. He was killed in the asylum after slaying approximately 22 people. The Legend of Zombie Road 3-D is centered around on the of the top ten most haunted places in America.

Another terror tale based upon a real life legend is quickly taking place as cinematographer Howard Smith (My Bloody Valentine 3D) and Ethan Terra (Monsterpiece Theatre) are gearing up to take us down one of our country's spookiest of roads.
The Legend of Zombie Road (coming at us in 3D), co-written by Joe Knetter and Terra, centers around one of the top ten most haunted places in America. There are many urban legends surrounding St. Louis' famed Zombie Road and the surrounding area that have endured for decades. One in particular would have us believe that the infamous road is haunted by the ghost of a man known only as "Zombie" who would make his way nightly to the area, where he would stalk and kill party-goers and then return to the asylum before dawn. It is said that he was killed in the asylum after slaying approximately 22 people.

In theaters or on its just-released DVD, a key appeal of Lionsgate’s My Bloody Valentine remake was supposed to be its 3-D gore, with blood and assorted body parts flying at the viewer. Yet when the movie first hit screens earlier this year, one sequence immediately commanded attention for reasons unrelated to the splatter. It features young actress Betsy Rue, whose character Irene gets into an armed confrontation with her lover in a seedy motel parking lot, witnesses his murder and then is pursued at length by the pickax-wielding killer—all while stark naked.
What makes the extended setpiece so notable—and effective—is not so much the nudity per se, but the way Rue and director Patrick Lussier almost play against it. The actress seems completely un-self-conscious, to the point where her actions, not her body, become the point. That may be because, as she reveals, the script...

Considering 3-D’s importance to both the My Bloody Valentine remake (out next week in a two-dvd set from Lionsgate) and the movie’s box-office success this past winter, it’s surprising that the process isn’t the focal point of more of the supplemental material. What’s gratifying is that the film’s dimensional presentation on disc works quite a bit better than the one seen in, for most recent example, this year’s home edition of Friday The 13th Part III.
While there are moments of ghosting, and the image inevitably lacks the clarity and true depth of the theatrical version, this DVD 3-D is overall pretty sharp, augmenting both the mood and the in-your-face jumps. The glasses, emblazoned not with Valentine’s logo but that of Lionsgate’s upcoming Saw VI (if only that movie was being produced using the process), utilize red and blue lenses—actually...
